I always thought he would just kinda be a sarcastic person. But, i met him one night many years ago and he couldn't have been more polite and charming. He's a genius.
He seems way more vunerable and genuine in this than some of his older interviews. Love this so much...and it's so great how free and fearless he is about the art of voice. As a singer myself, who also appreciates all kinds of music, he's a real revelation and inspiration.
I love this guy. He's so realistic about the music business and is easily one of the greatest singer of all history, and is also very versatile. I like that. Sol Invictus is a killing album, that's how you make your comeback in the charts. If you ever read this Mike, just know I (and many others) think you're the man, time passed but you're still rocking around and doing your business for the best, and that's awesome !
Silverbullet to me he's just in a row with freddy mercury, just one of the greats despite him not being a typical mainstream singer. and i can't get "Matador" out of my head:-)
I can't believe the person conducting this interview didn't think "hmm maybe I should find out what that constant obnoxious clicking sound is and stop it before I start filming".

I love Mike Patton very much. His music is absolutely brilliant, and he will always be an inspiration to me. That being said, this interview shows him in such a different light than I'm used to seeing him in. I guess that's partly because he's twice as old. But, it's actually kind of a relief to see that he's kind of a goofy old dork now, instead of a petulant cocky adolescent who literally poops all over the place. Keep rockin' it, Mike!
@ Brie Russell - Unless Mike was to get a collection of Kubricks work, his photos for example - and compose a piece of music for that ...so, in a way, you could say they collaborated together. In the loosest sense of the word :)
I don’t think Mike has ever met a musical challenge that he has declined to have a go at and that’s incredible to me. He said he feels comfortable with singing and perhaps that’s because he doesn’t look at anything like a limitation but a challenge. He’s a fearless adventurer and he’s certainly made me more adventurous with my listening. He’s always willing to learn and adapt and that’s inspiring.
This why I love his vocals so much, the man himself could be in a band and I wouldn't even realise until I'd seen footage of it...... I'd just think he was a novel type of Oriental instrument or something 😀
@Saara a groupie is a girl who wants to have sex with who ever it is they like in a band that kind of thing or who want to or thinks they can get with a famous person.
I ADORE Mike Patton. You can tell he's gone through a lot of therapy. He went from extremely cocky, arrogant, and a sarcastic prick (sorry, its true 🤷🏻♀️) to the most humble, grounded guy ever. He learned to check his ego and I'm here for it. It's fascinating and he is extremely talented. I'm obsessed. 🖤🤍
Grew up listening to this and I've been inspired ever since to try and be as unique. Absolutely awesome music that needs to be continuously listened to !!!!
Tobias Scheller apparently Devin doesn’t think they would get along & feels like if they were to collaborate, it would have happened by now. There’s an interview out there, just Google Devin Townsend & Mike Patton
The philosophy of the singer finding the appropriate place within the instruments and music being created is probably why Mike Patton has such a tremendous singing range, demonstrably why his advice is spot on.
He lives what he says. This is proof in him being cool with letting Chuck Mosely come up and sing with band during one of their past shows, I guess it was in the UK?
Love Patton, listens to all types of music for inspiration,it’s amazing when you play in a metal band, you are labelled as a metalhead but I bet alot of famous metal drummers or guitarists listen to music far removed from the genre they are tagged in.
Greatest vocalist ever. His work continues to inspire me decades after first hearing him. Patton and Mr. Bungle opened so many doors to musical discovery. Secret chiefs 3, John Zorn, Tub Ring, all the patton bands, Stump and so many other strange and unique bands that aren't afraid of going outside the box. Patton has done more for the music industry than anyone else I can think of.
Here is an anecdote to maybe discuss: When Mr. Patton described his instinct to cut back and avoid "putting in too much" and seek a more minimalist approach, it seems a point in many artists' growth. Trent Reznor in particular mentions a similar method. It is an urge for the purest, most economical expression. Trying to find "just right" in what you do.
What he says is so good and real, and humble, because at the end he's such a wonderfull singer, and so takes place a lot, because amazing he is, but yes, Mike Patton is DOPE anyway!!Genius!
Mike is a bilingual, versatile and just brilliant man. I saw FNM at the NEC years ago and everyone was throwing seat covers in the air. It was raining seat covers. awesome gig.
Mike Patton is not only humble great nice and I’ll be bold and say The Greatist Vocalist of Our Time! But he seems like a great musician and guy.. Mike I’d love to meet you... hit me up
"The vocal is just another instrument, & shouldn't necessarily be front and center." The funny thing is, he's one of THE best vocalists of all time, ever, since the beginning of time. If I was in a band with Mike Patton, you can bet your sweet ass he'd be front and center!!!!
I I I I the ego on this cat. It’s not about me, but it’s all about me. He’s a complete showman on stage, which isn’t a bad thing, but he sees himself as a background instrument. Wow.
LOve the fact he has a Pipa in his studio! would love to see Bumble Foot(guitar/Vocals),Steve Vai(guitar/Vocals),Tosin Abasi(guitar extended range) Victor Wooten( bass) or Michael Manring(Bass),Jordan Rudess(keys),Apocolyptica(strings) and The Fantastic Vocals of Michael Patton(Faith No More and Mr Bungle Tomahawk etc.) THis Man IS the MTV of Vocal and Remains Humble in his craft!
its like he's a different guy in this video. maybe more mellow with age or something. cool clip. he kinda sounds like ice-t in this video. never seen it before. thanks! :)
A music journalist wrote an article about how every other interview he does with Patton (up to quite recently), the guy is nice/an asshole. Maybe he's just unpredictable in front of media people.
You can say whatever about him, but his level of humility being the greatest vocalist of all time, is amazing.
absolutely
🐐
I always thought he would just kinda be a sarcastic person. But, i met him one night many years ago and he couldn't have been more polite and charming. He's a genius.
Yes, I met him after a Bungle concert years ago. He was like "Man, I hope you had a good time" and stuff...signed my record too
Luporis I was at a Bungle show too when I met him. It was on the CALIFORNIA tour.
He was more sarcastic when he was young
yeah i just can't take him seriously when he's shitting other bands idk why lol but i do take his talent seriously. His voice is fucking legend
+Smelly web he just seems like that because he gets nervous during interviews
"The more you do it, and the less you think about it, the better you'll be"
I can't understand him with out a sandwich
“People are the worst. The worst thing about music is people play it.” -Patton
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
🤣
Lmfao! He's just chowin' down inthat one other interview.
😅

He’s so humble and grateful to be where he is. He feels lucky .
I can't believe the person conducting this interview didn't think "hmm maybe I should find out what that constant obnoxious clicking sound is and stop it before I start filming".
Lewis Hay maybe mike wanted it to be in the interview for the banter. Tbh it annoys me too but its pretty funny 😹
Well, considering they're in his home studio, it's probably a metronome. I find it pretty relaxing tbh

Best artist ever. Down to earth, precise and humble. Plus, extremely intelligent. Patton is GOD. Period.
Patton's craft is timeless art
His eyes. Always his eyes❤
And he's wearing a Portal shirt to boot! This guy could fart into a mic, overdub it again, and i'd find gold in it. Mike Patton trumps all.
Dustin Skaalerud Mike voiced the red core in portal
I believe that was called adult themes for voice lol. But those robots having sex was the best thing on that album LOL

Man you have beautifully unique vocal cords, throat, and chest anatomy, which makes your sound incredible.
It's not just a muscle it's a talent
Man, I love this guy. Would love to work with him some day.
God I love Mike Patton. He's a true artist.
The first 2 and a half minutes are something every vocalist should take lessons from. This guys is awesome.
I love Mike. Thats it.
This makes me wanna watch the making of angel dust interview again, patton in his younger years....
I didn't think he could be any more awesome but his view on bands just made him that. One of the finest voices in music. Love you Mikey!
He's wearing a portal Tee, I fucking love this guy!
You know the red "anger" personality sphere in Portal was voiced by Mike Patton, right?
No I didn't, that's even better!
***** I didn't know that, it just goes to show how great a professional he is. Patton for president.
Romulo Ferreira Whats portal?
countsmyth It's a puzzle video game.
The Stanley Kubrick of the music world. Imagine if those 2 had worked on a project together....
Not sure why not, Mike likes his films I believe
Yeah but collaborating with Kubrick would be a little hard what with him being dead and all.
Oh wow I didn't know he was dead :(
@ Brie Russell - Unless Mike was to get a collection of Kubricks work, his photos for example - and compose a piece of music for that ...so, in a way, you could say they collaborated together. In the loosest sense of the word :)
He's not Kubrick he's Lynch (and btw he likes him, just as Buzzo)
California is the perfect example of his vocals more in the "background". He is really speaking truth here! Genius.
I just want to hear YOUR VOICE.
LOUDLY and smoothly.
You have the greatest range of vocals.
Just release music.
Just keep singing. YES.
I love Patton. This is my favorite interview. Thank you.
Probably one of the best interviews with Mike.Thank you.▶🎤MP forever !!!
Holy shit he's actually mellowed out a shit ton compared to his days in FNM and Mr. B. I mean I know he was in his 20's but still holy shit.
Lots of therapy I think
Great interview, probably one of my favourites out of so many I've seen.
Mike Patton is hot......& talented, of course, but one thing I've loved about him since I first heard "Epic," (aside from his voice) are his eyes.
