The Real Thing and Angel Dust were the soundtrack to my late teens, early 20's. It's nice to finally put a face to Matt Wallace and hear him talk about the Masterpiece he helped create. Well done Gibson!!! Again. Now do one for Angel Dust 🤘🤘
The same thing here! The Real Thing and Angeldust (along with Godflesh:Street Cleaner) were my life's soundtrack. Nice to know other people had similar experiences!!
Both are brilliant albums, Real Thing is more of the outgoing album, and Angel Dust is very dark. Those will always be my favorite albums, with King For A Day being in a very close second.
I was 15 when this came out. I would ride my bike to school listening to my Walkman and FNM. This was the first music band that opened up my eyes. Angel Dust is my number 1 album of all time. When I saw Bill and Ted and when Jim Martin came out of the telephone booth. I stood up and cheered. I play my music at 47 still loud in my car. As a angry teen in the early 90s. FNM was part of my life. I would roam the burbs and vandalize cars and building while listening to FNM. I called off work during HS to race home and watch the premiere of Small victory on MTV.
Like x1000. Please can we have a directors cut where he talks through every song! And when that’s done, please can you do every other Faith No More album!
A truly fantastic record from start to finish (the amount of solo headbanging i did in my room to 'Woodpeckers from Mars' in my teens!). And know I also know there is a beautiful human being that helped putting it together. The ability of music to speak to the soul of many and create communion is truly a gift of humankind to itself. Thanks Mr.Wallace 🙏

just got back from a bike ride and I started singing "From out of nowhere" out of nowhere. Now this popped in my feed...such a classic and important record in my musical journey this was.
The Morning After is an underrated masterpiece of a track. Can't believe you guys didn't do an in depth discussion of Zombie Eaters. The part where the growling bass kicks in is the real epic on this album. Back when power ballads were all the rage, that one was a monster. Long live The Real Thing and FNM. 🤘
@@petrilampela It came out in 1989, but it really didn't gain the popularity till the following year in 1990. So you could say this was an early 90s record.
Bought cassette of this on family vacation summer 1990. I remember listening to it in the dark, after everyone went to bed, when I was supposed to be asleep. Mind blowing... it really expanded my listening boundaries.
I'd agree with the expanding my listening boundaries thing, I'd go as far as saying Mike Patton's attitude to music in general was what opened me up to trying different styles. Watching FNM play Easy at a show blew my mind, a rock band playing easy listening? Patton and FNM are gods.

I was at a sleepover at a friends house and saw this in his dads collection. The album art grabbed me so I asked if we could put it on and was instantly hooked. My favorite album, from my favorite band with my favorite bass player. I listened to this album when I took my dog to get put down this year... I listened to it when my grandfather passed away almost two years ago. This album has gotten me through everything and was my motivation for learning how to play bass. I've been playing almost 30 years now and can't thank you enough for the care and energy that you put into this. All of your efforts and all of your talent during those sessions are still playing today. Thanks Matt.
Fantastic album. My personal favorite, which I'm sure is the same for many is Angel Dust. But, The Real Thing always has a special place in my heart. So many good memories. Thank you Matt and Faith No More. Now excuse me, while I mop up my tears while the Epic piano outro plays, as I remember all the good times I had with this album.
Love The Real Thing: as much as I enjoy their prior and subsequent work, it's the album that means the most to me. Wallace is spot on with his remarks about Patton's lyrics - real depth and emotional intelligence at a relatively young age - and comes over as a lovely, humble guy as well as a genuine music fan. An interesting watch and moving with it.
Is it though? At the time Angel Dust wasn't as regarded as it is today, & a lot of people thought it was a bit of a let down from The Real Thing. It also took them a long time to release it. I think TRT is '88 & Angel Dust was 93, after grunge had exploded on the scene. The Real Thing was so radically different than anything before it, that it inspired a lot of musicians to be. Genre smashing had never been done quite like that & suddenly everyone could see all the possibilities. Although tbf, you did say "arguably" so this is my argue against that take, lol, -Cheers!
@@JeighNeither I'm gonna have to say as someone who lived through that era that, yeah Angel Dust was massively well regarded when it came out, from critics to so many bands of that era. The fact that the buying public didn't buy it as mush as TRT, means they missed the point, and TRT sales were based on casual rock fans, which have always been mercurial, but among those in the hard rock/metal community, it was and still is a huge deal of an album.
This album got literally stuck in my car's cassette player one summer right after it had dropped, so it's basically all me and my girl listened to for months on end. I became enamored with every track in one way or another, and as a musician I still hear them in the stuff that I write to this very day. I can't express the impact that TRT had on me back then, and it still sounds fresh when I listen to it today. What an amazing achievement! Thank you for this vid, thank you Matt for your outstanding work, & THANK YOU FAITH NO MORE for being the soundtrack to a great chunk of my youth. Cheers!
Awsome to see you get emotional Matt. Brought a tear to my eyes seeing your reaction of people aticking around one more day. Like Corey Taylor and a lot of other people. U really dont know how my life would've been without Ftm. Thank you Ftm and thank you Mr. Matt Wallace 😂😘😜🙏
My favorite song by FNM. Possibly my favorite song period. I have used it countless times to focus, get through super difficult trials, and succeed. Aside from being one of the most inspirational songs in my life, it’s also just a statement as far as song writing. As close to perfection as it gets.
One of the most iconic albums ever made. They created a genre. With that bass coming in on the one and it’s piano string elements. All of it is just some of the most eccentric beautiful music ever created.
A perfect record to me. The songwriting and especially the sounds he captured on tape made it an instant classic. Those guitar sounds are some of the most powerful ever recorded. Thank you Matt.
What a nice guy Matt Wallace seems. Thanks so much for putting this together. Would love to hear more producer memories of Angel Dust and King For A Day please!
Matt Wallace had no part in producing King for a day. It was Andy Wallace, who at the time was producing bands like Slayer, Sepultura and White Zombie. It's the only album of FNM that Matt Wallace didn't produce and that's why it sounds so much slicker than any other FNM album. Still a great album!!!
Based on Matt's comments about "The Real Thing" track, I think Patton is a largely underrated lyricist. Most can agree he's an excellent and diverse vocalist, but, as he put it, his ability to detail the "human condition" largely goes unrecognized. As a DJ in college radio during this era, bands like FNM, Primus, Limbomaniacs, Fungo Mungo, etc. (several of whom I got to interview) were mainstays of my radio show. This was really fantastic. Thanks!
Absolutely one of the most influential and ultimately formative records of my life. It definitely shaped and changed the way I listened to music from that day forward. I can remember the first time I heard it like it was yesterday. My only criticism of this is that they didn’t cover every song.
Same, I had the exact same reaction & at age 13 it changed my entire musical trajectory. Before there was hair rock, with splashes of alternative brilliance from bands like Janes Addiction & heavy stuff like Metallica, but after this album it was like a door into the right timeline opened & we all walked thru.
@@JeighNeither 6am age 10 I saw the Epic video and thought it was the greatest song I've ever heard. I didn't hear it again for 2 years but I kept the song in my head every day. I got The Real Thing as my first CD at age 12.
I agree - fantastic record that influenced millions. Very appreciative of this mini-doc but to a huge fan it is criminal that they didn’t cover Zombie Eaters which is so freaking great and interesting from recording and song writing standpoints
Thank you so much to Gibson TV and Matt Wallace for doing this. You made my day with this video! I’ve watched it twice already. Faith No More were my Beatles and their music changed my life in 1990 when I bought this on cassette. I immediately saved up for a CD player just to listen to this album and Introduce Yourself. Matt Wallace seems like the kindest, most humble human being for someone who has accomplished so much. It was especially great learning more about him and his techniques. The Real Thing remains perfect to this day. The drums sound huge while the vocals and guitars sound in your face. It’s the perfect hybrid of late eighties and what became the early nineties style of production. I still can’t believe Mike Patton was 20-21 when he wrote the lyrics to these songs. Apologies for the long comment, I’m just so happy.
One of those albums that changed the world for me. Still remember standing on stage with the school band in 1990, doing a cover of Epic and being 'cool' for the first time amongst the greater braindead sheep. lol.
The Real Thing changed everything for me musically. I could not understand why I liked that album so much. I didn't realize at the time how incredible it was and still is today. Faith no more taught me a lot about music. This why I say Faith no more is my absolute favorite band.
Wow! I have loved Faith No More ever since I heard this album! I can’t believe I have somehow missed this video until now!!?? Thank you for this awesome video and thank you for recording this album Matt Wallace!!!🔥🔥🔥😊🎸🎸🎸
Another amazing piece by the team at Gibson TV. Thank-you so much for the amazing content. Love this album so much. The Real Thing (song) is one of my all time favourites pieces. The intro with the minimal drums, and sliding bass kills me every time.
One of my all time favourite albums. To hear the passion, drive & effort that went into creating this masterpiece which was a huge inspiration in my life is exactly how I hoped it was. It was new, we had never heard anything like it & changed the music scene for ever. So many bands swear by it. Every time I listen to it, it takes me back to my early teens & great times.
Absolutely fascinating. Great to see Mr Wallace so deeply affected by his work, just as it has affected all of us fans. Music, in and of itself, is worth living for. Music heals. Thank you for all your hard work, sir.
This album is a masterpiece I was there when it came out and I am 41 still a killer album!!! I wish they would revisit it with everyone involved today, Btw if you see this I will always love you Chels
What incredible work Wallace did on this record, one of my very favorites of the era and probably one of the best-sounding rock records ever. I admit I was a little surprised to hear his criticism of "From Out of Nowhere" - what he singles out as a fault is probably what made my hair stand on end and immediately push this band to the forefront of my attention. It's the patience, in a song with such urgent energy and immediacy, to hold back that soaring chorus (post-chorus?) until well into the song, and then to unleash it fully only at the end - and then to snatch it away again, leaving the listener wanting more. To me, delivering it all upfront would have made it sound more formulaic - as it was on record, it instead stood way out from the pack and made me rush to buy the album to find out more. It's a credit to Wallace that he supported the band's vision on the song structure (and of course, made it sound so incredible). This listener agrees with his lightning-in-a-bottle assessment - every member of the band was astoundingly on the money throughout.
Thanks Matt. The Morning After has always been up there for me. That drum/bass intro is perfection and kicks so hard. First track i play when buying new kit as my ears know it soooo well.
Faith no more, that album was that one in a million bands/albums that you listen to, but it's like listening to 10 different styles/genre's of great music. All in one package deal. It changed how I thought about music. At the time I played in local bands, bars and clubs every weekend. I never had any illusion of fame or anything, it was just fun. The most fun of my life. That album made me rethink everything about how I played and how our band played. Great video
Awesome interview. From Out of Nowhere is my FAVORITE song of all time. I'm surprised that it's Matt Wallace's least favorite on the album, but to each their own. An extremely amazing album for sure, but , in my opinion Angeldust is a MASTERPIECE.
What an AMAZING video...Kudos to Matt Wallace for capturing this great band.....Loved this album from Day One....For whatever reason, am rarely all into the hit singles on any record, but Falling To Pieces is truly a standout track that is indescribably magical and is unlike any kind of music that came before....
... miss Jim most... without him Faith No More was not More anymore ... Matt description of his sound and input say's it all...many thx for this great documentation... this record deserves it ❤️
Man ! This was so cool to see ! Great stuff . I bought this tape as a kid and loved it but as I got older I appreciate it even more with each listen . Same with all their albums . Angel Dust confused me at first listen because it was so different . But within a week I could not stop listening to it !!!!
It’s such an amazing sounding record. It’s big, bold and very present on the top end. One of the greatest snare and guitar sounds ever for a rock record. But you can’t date it to ‘89 like so many of the hair metal recordings from then. A true instance of capturing the sound of a band instead of mostly capturing the time the band was doing it.
Absolutely one of my favourite bands, favourite albums and one of the best gigs I have ever seen to this day! Thank you Gibson for this. Wonderful to hear about the making of such an iconic album. That album and Angel Dust were life changers. Amazing to learn more about the band and the album. Wonderful, thanks

First tape I ever got. It holds so many memories for me. Hearing Epic that first time was mind blowing. What a time to be alive and be witness to the explosion of muscle that followed. Picked up vinyl first press the other day and it all came flooding back. FNM and Matt Wallace - THANK YOU.🤘
my first introduction to Faith No More was them opening on the Justice for All Metallica tour. I honestly didn’t give them a chance since I had just gotten into metal and Metallica was my favorite band. A few days after seeing that show a friend of mine who was with me at the show puts The Real Thing on in his car. I immediately was drawn to it. He made sure to not tell me who it was until he was sure I liked it. So confusing and so awesome. Been a huge fan ever since

Thanks for watching Dynamite!!!
My first concert ever was the classic line up of Faith No More opening for Metallica and GNR. Such an amazing and unique band.
FNM torched both of them at the Detroit show.
Wooow, great time to be at a show form all of them!
Music is powerful, thanks Matt Wallace and Gibson for helping to bring it to us
amen!
@@matthewwallace1374 now i am gonna take advantage of you being a super nice guy. What do you think about billy Gould as a producer in Sol Invictus?
@@DonDiegoMorel he did an excellent job. more importantly, what did YOU think about him as a producer?
@@matthewwallace1374 I think he was amazing, love that record sonically. Cheers Matthew! You have saved way too many lives with your work.
That bass sound live was huge.
Wow! I have loved Faith No More ever since I heard this album! I can’t believe I have somehow missed this video until now!!?? Thank you for this awesome video and thank you for recording this album Matt Wallace!!!🔥🔥🔥😊🎸🎸🎸
@MatthewWallace I grew up admiring, dissecting and studying your work Matt, particularly this record and Angel Dust. Thank you.
Such a beautifully recorded and mixed album. Crystal clear and well balanced. It sounds so huge. The guitar tone is just epic.
Great film. Blown away. Love Jim Martin.
This is pure gold!
Thanks Matt. The Morning After has always been up there for me. That drum/bass intro is perfection and kicks so hard. First track i play when buying new kit as my ears know it soooo well.
on my 12th birthday I asked my brother for this album, and I played it all, it was my favorite, it introduced me to rock!
What a lovely guy, he was the 6th member of the band. What an album that is!
I cannot like this video enough. One of the most important records of my life. The insight Matt gave us is just awesome.
Wow, just wow! Fantastic ...from the first second. Thank you Matt, and please never change!
Matt description of his sound and input say's it all...many thx for this great documentation... this record deserves it ❤️
That was an awesome watch. Also first time I actually see what Mr. Matt Wallace looks like.
This was really something special. Some great words at the end about what makes music essential for human beings. Thank you Matt Wallace!
Obrigado Matt Wallace por ter lançado o Faith No More, minha banda number one 🎸
muito obrigado!!!
This was amazing. I really wish they broke down Zombie Eaters as well but fantastic regardless.
I was also hoping for a breakdown on Zombie Eaters! But yeah this was still pretty interesting
I was hoping he broke down every song...
Indeed! My favorite FNM track of all of them. The rest are 2nd. 😀
Great story! The Real Thing has definitely stood the test of time. I had it on cassette as a pre teen. The tape was blue. I'll never forget it!
This man is a treasure. Just wow.
This interview was fantastic. Can there be a part two. I was really hoping they would get to zombie eaters. Also the real thing was in Matt’s top two favorite tracks. What was his favorite? Hearing that drum sound for the real thing. Man, what a banger!❤
I was in fifth grade... skateboarding with my friends...those songs always take me back to those days...hard to believe we were listening to something that cool as fifth graders
It is still crazy to me how underrated The Real Thing is... the number of music fans that don't know about this album blows my fucking mind... I discovered this album when I was 16 and it changed how I viewed music
This was wonderful. One of my favorite albums of all time. Haven't listened to it from beginning to end in a long time, but now I have to play it no matter what the neighbors say. (It's 1:33 AM) ;)
I heard Epic on the radio when I was 12, before Google and the internet. I went and found this album, listened to it from start to finish. I still love every single song on that album at 36, thank you for sharing.
Before I didn't know him, I thought he was just part of the production, now I know he is a visionary person with a big heart.
First tape I ever got. It holds so many memories for me. Hearing Epic that first time was mind blowing. What a time to be alive and be witness to the explosion of muscle that followed. Picked up vinyl first press the other day and it all came flooding back. FNM and Matt Wallace - THANK YOU.🤘
Amazing video, amazing album, amazing band... amazing times of my life! The real thing!
my first introduction to Faith No More was them opening on the Justice for All Metallica tour. Been a huge fan ever since
Faith no more were very fortunate to have this guy behind the board. Great video
Absolute pivotal moment in recording history. Great little feature ❤️
Thank goodness these people found each other. Thank you Matt and FNM for bringing fearless, uncompromising music into the mainstream and making folks deal with it.
