Have you tried using Active Track on a bike? How did it work out for you? Let me know in the comments.
Jeff if you ride you bike at .5 mph how on a soccer field it will work anything else is crap. It will lose you at the first turn. This is the dumbest feature on the Mavic Air.. This feature is good if your walking on the beach with your partner during a sunset that is the pace you need to go to accomplish anything worth your time to set up.
Motoxscuba Park thanks dor the comment. Active track definitely can be improved (especially if dji had a gps armband), but it can be done with a bit of practice at bike speed (18-20mph) under optimal conditions. POI active track only works on a slow roll/ride.
I love my drone, I hike and bike everyday and get new shots of every trail etc around simi valley, ca. I'm saddened by this feature. It for sure has some room to grow. Thanks for comment. it is the first time I have ever commented on anything on you tube. I will add videos slowly to the things I do on my page. Have a great day
Motoxscuba Park
This is my same experience. I had one good experience of the Mavic air active tracking while cycling, but that's it.
Nice

Check this out😊
Thanks for the videos I am learning all the features of the mavic air. I have had it for 4 years and never have flown it till now! how crazy is that. It is like new. Taking it camping and fishing. The videos you did are great!
Excelllent as always sir! Best demos of the flight modes! Keep them coming and keep the shiny side up!
Design Eagles thank you for the compliment! Definitively some close calls putting this one together 😁
I'm super excited to try this out on my drone cycling through clear creek canyon in Colorado
I tried Active Track (trace) in the woods on my MTB the other day but it saw a total failure. I like the look of Spotlight Mode, that looks far more useful and cinematic as you say, will certainly try that out soon. Thanks!
Great job on this video. You explained a lot of things that others just assume everyone knows or they don't even know it themselves. This is the third or fourth video of yours that I have watched and I appreciate your detail and subscribed.
Thanks Scott, i appreciate the positive comments. Welcome to this growing channel. Let me know if you want to see any topic in particular.
Thanks, Jeff. Excellent. Exactly what I needed as I set out on my bike tour with Mavic Air. The bike specific context hits the right points for me.
That's great Thuan, i would like to seem some shots from your tour!
3:35 - it will actually descend too... first time I used active track, I was on a dirt road descending to a beach, with telephone line poles and had to hit pause button as the altitude was already negative so... always have that pause button at sight and read the telemetry.
at 6:08 you do have dinamic home point. when setting homepoint its the other button next to it, so it sets your remote as home point aka dynamic
nice work, if it warms up and stops snowing here in NJ I could practice some of this stuff you just taught me...
CoolRaul i hear you man. This day was 75f...this weekend possible snow in NC
Very well done Jeff! As always very informative and well explained. Keep it up! Thank you
Thank you kalaysin22, i appreciate you saying that!
Loved the video! Helped so much man!!
Your video is straight forward and your explanations and illustrations are excellent! Just got this little gem of a drone (My P4P is a little big to be hiking around with) and your vids have helped me out tremendously! Thanks!
Hey man, you are most welcome. Glad you found this helpful!
Perfect content, exactly what I was looking for. thank you. Subscribed.
Dover Shark thank you and welcome to the group! Glad you found what you were looking for.
Very useful and simple. Thanks
great video, Ive enjoyed all of your mavic air ones so far. big thumbs up from me
Pedro Silva thank you sir, i appreciate the thumbs up! Let me know what else you would like to see and I'll make it happen.
Great Video! Thanks for the tutorial.
Greg Brouwer thank you for the thumbs up! I appreciate your feedback.
Very helpful video! Thanks so much for posting.
JoeBananas3 awesome, I'm glad you found this helpful!
Nice job and great info. Thanks for sharing.
TheBirkin7 thanks buddy!
Thats pretty sweet man, I wonder how good it would be on an mtb? What do you reckon?
thanks for video. BTW what was the song?
Thank you Sir, and yes I did learn a few things
Nice video - did they ever get the Active Track updated to follow you longer than 100 meters? Thanks for posting and great tutorial!
Do you know if you can control only with phone now? I'm tempted to get the Parrot Anafi 😁
I've struggled to get active track modes to work when cycling as I'm rarely on flat land. Tap to fly is a good fallback though. You can just tap on the screen as you're cycling along and it will follow you providing you have set the speed settings correctly.
Nice Jeff!! Thanks for the video!!
Bram de Schepper thank you sir!
Cool footage! Were you worried about the power lines? Can the Air see them?
Thanks for the video. Very informative.
GS1200 Cork thanks for the thumbs up!
Very informative video. Thank you.
Thank you Tony!
Are you able to use active track now just with the phone? Did they upgrade the software?
Hey Jeff, love this video and all the others I've watched so far. For the Active Track, how do you get the drone to do a sweep / arc / circle while it is following? Are those shots using a different mode like POI? Or is it possible to adjust the drone flight path on the fly while Active Track keeps it focused on you?
Kenneth Everett thanks for the comment! This is actually done within active track mode. There is an additional slider (see 05:39) below the target. You slide this to the right/left to fly in a circle while tracking.
Thank you, that was most helpful.
Thanks GearUp!
So what happened to the homepoint control do you need to change the on point
Nice video... I was thinking of doing the same... but you have better weather!
hamstergraphics thank you, the weather has been hit or miss lately. This was a really nice day!
I Mabel took control change the setting on my controller from fixed home point 2 dynamic home point and I have a Maverick error so I don't know if you're correct about that
I’m thinking a piece of foam sandwiched between the bike and controller would absorb enough shock for off road bumps.?
Lit video as always!
Frean Delos Santos haha thank you Frean!
Great video!!!!! Thanks.
Chris Perera thanks for the positive feedback sir!
Great video. Bummed on the phone only issue though...
Awesome video as always, Jeff!! I plan on using Active Track from my boat with the RC and would like to know if I need to use a GPS enabled device such as an iPad. iPhone, etc. for that mode itself? It appears in your video that I wouldn't as long as I'm using the RC. I do realize that I would need a GPS device for RTH to the RC location due to moving around. but there may be times I set the RTH on shore. Thanks again for another awesome video!! Ray 😊👍
Raymond Sherman nope not necessary. Typically when my phone is connected to the rc, my phone is in airplane mode. So, the gps is only used between the mavic and the rc, not your phone. Also, active Track is only using a "visual lock" based on what your camera sees as the target, not the gps location of the target. Hope that helps!
Thanks Jeff, yes your answer definitely helped me understand how Active track works. I have an iPad Air 2 without cellular and I also recently purchased a new iPad 9.7 with cellular. I normally use the Air 2 with the MA but, I will use the new iPad for RTH to RC on the boat. I also will set to hover in case of a signal loss. I thank you for your help during my learning process not only through your videos but, also through your comments. You've been a tremendous help to me and I sincerely appreciate your time in answering my questions. As always, I can't wait for your next video. Happy Flying!! Ray 👏😊
I'm not into biking but your video was still very helpful and cool.
Thanks for the thumbs up Robert! Yep, you can use this on anything really, skateboard, scooter, etc.
He Jeff, got a new Mavic Air and feel home on your vidoes! Me, i also get this drone special for my roadbike. Never use a drone bevor. But as you could see on my chanel here, i do a lot of bike videos. So thanks for some great videos and special for this.
Cycle Cafe Ben thank you Ben for the nice comment and welcome to the group! Will definitely check out your cycling vids. Cheers.
I think you can turn off the range limit in the settings. I know beginner mode limited the height and distance for sure...
Hi,
Thanks for the video. How to do the REVERSE active track please?
Thank you
Hi Mohammed, this is just normal Active Track. Since the Active track maintains the same distance once enabled it will work forwards or backwards. (this was also on a very straight road).
Very good video
fernando DISLA thanks buddy!
Great video...
Thanks Milan, i appreciate that!
Hello from Brazil. Thanx a lot for your video. It will help me a lot when I try the active track mode on the Mavic Air. I will try it on my motorbike. I would suggest DJI that we could set intellident modes with the drone still on ground, for battery saving, as modes are only selectable with the drone in the air. Nice job, though.
Paulo Schalcher thank you for the thumbs up. Would like to see your motorbike video!
the question I have is, where do you put the phone or controller when its following you? I ride mountain bikes and dirtbikes and I need both hands at times lol. I saw your little mischief clamp but what I hate about these drones is you need the controller or phone. DJI needs to be like skydio2 and have a beacon
Hi Will, I wouldn't even attempt to ride mountain bikes with Active track. Unfortunately it is an exercise in frustration where you may eventually get a shot of you "on a bike", but not action shots of you "riding a bike". The sketchy clamp/gear tie that i have would not hold up on a mountain bike trail. I ordered a skydio 2 for this exact same reason. IMO, riding the bike should be the primary activity, not the other way around.
Contrast an clear sight of the tracked person is important. Cycling through tree shadows on the road in profile mode lost track on several occasions. When out in the clear wearing contrasting clothing not an issue. It has its limits but still cool tech. Keep the vids coming....thanks for sharing.
Matt Betts thanks for the tips and thumbs up!
Does any other drones have side camera sensors? I just got this drone and I think its dumb how they dont have any side sensors but cool drone though im liking it so far love the size too for traveling
Yes, the Mavic 2 Pro has side sensors.
Hi, I saw your examples in sort of slow motion, did you have to set the video (to what setting) prior to filming in active track or was it slowed in post? Ty
Franklin, actually all of the examples in this video were shot at 4k30, and at 100% normal speed. I sped up certain clips using a speed ramp in Final Cut Pro X(some were sped up 2000%) so the 100% normal speed may look slow.
This video is older than 1yr, did DJI updated the drone to prevent the issue with only cellphone control
No it did not.
Wrong, did not fix it, at least not in my case, but a compas recalibration fix it.
Jeff hello! Tell pls how you are edit your video from mavic? Do pls tutorial )))
Thanks for the thumbs up StarKepler, i will do an editing video soon!
Jeff, I noticed in the general menu of the go4 app that you can choose whether the home point is the take off point or where the controller (or possibly phone) is. Might be worth investigating to change that setting and you may get away with using the phone only. Slight guess work on my part, but poss worth checking. Cheers, Nick.
volens31 thanks for the comment and good idea. I checked and unfortunately the option doesn't exist when just using the phone as the controller. Maybe dji will turn this on soon.
Jeff that's a shame. Yes let's hope it's on the next update. Cheers for now 😃
I did active track with a friend on a motorcycle but probably I would have thought twice before doing it had I seen your video earlier. Now I know it was just sheer luck that the drone hadn't crashed into trees near the road. I didn't expect sideways movements. The resulted clip looked great, however the altitude was not set consciously higher than the trees. It was luck, now I know.
Dr Zsolt Gordos wow that is lucky. I have definitively had mixed results, lots of practice ahead.
As of Feb 2020 Mavic Air still has that issue with the phone and active track.
hi
looks like you did not change the home point to the controller as opposed to the take off point ?
ol correct, it won't allow you to to do that if just using the smartphone :(
Good lord get to it already!,,!,!,!,!,!,!,
Maximum flight distance reached, this is what I get last days because of GPS wrong positioning! YOU CAN FIX IT by increasing the maximum flight distance from the app, or just recalibrate the compas. It worked for me. Greetings
Proud mavic air owner here 😉
Just curious as to why DJI would not have dynamic HP on MA!!!
Are there any advantages of AT on MA over MP?
RK Notes fingers crossed on the dynamic hp soon. The only other diff i see related to active track is the additional obstacle avoidance sensors on the mavic air vs the mavic pro. This has saved me several times 😁
You mean saved while flying backwards?
RK Notes yes, i was doing a reverse Tapfly on one of these bike shots. I turned around to go get the ma and it was hovering 3ft in front of a stop sign😰
Which ND filter you always use..? If you don't mind sharing.
Hi Asher, I use these polar pro(ND4,ND8,ND16) cinema series ND Filters for Mavic Air: amzn.to/2ELOu8JMost of the time i am using the ND8 during the first 2-3 hrs of daylight. If it is midday, i'll use the ND16. I have been very happy with the cinema series.
I love bicycle up.
it seems that in Spotlight mode, the phone and the remote control is not fixed to the handlebars of the bike, is it true?
Baptiste_In_Sport no, i did have both fixed to the handlebars. Only the position of the mavic air was fixed in spotlight mode.
Hello from Raleigh. The shot in beginning looks like courtyard in front of Hunts library.
Hey what's up neighbor! Hunts Library indeed! Crazy, how did you ever notice that?
@@JeffGreeneChannel It is only 3 minutes walking from my office. The solar panel is quite unique and catches my attention.
Mine just Active Tracked right into the ground. It didn't compensate for elevation.
nice
Thank you!
How long does it take to set up the drone intent air to take the shots? Could it ever be done without really stopping. Or maybe a 30 sec stop to launch and put in position?
Josh, I know what you mean. The technology just isn't there yet. The time it takes to set up the mavic to get a shot of you on the bike DOES take away from the fun time on the bike. Meaning if you are riding with a group of friends to get a cool shot, they're likely going to lose interest as you take 5 mins getting set up, plus numerous attempts for it to come out right, etc. For me, its more practical to take it on the bike to get cool shots of other things, not active tracking the bike itself. The trial and error in my experience is too time consuming.
Jeff Greene thanks for getting back to me. That’s really helpful, even if a little disappointing.
On a different note, I don’t suppose you have tried putting the spark in a jerseys pocket?
Thanks
Josh Wait nope i don't have a spark. I would imagine that would be a tight fit since it doesn't fold up, no?
Jeff Greene thanks. Yep. That’s what I was thinking. It might just squeeze in the large pocket. Think I’ll have to give the air some serious thought though.
Very informative video. I was considering getting one to track my ride in addition to my helmet cam. I've been hit twice by idiot car drivers. 5:53 pretty much answered my question. Hope DJI improves on it.
Agreed. Definitely wouldn't use this for everyday tracking of a ride. There's probably a better chance of crashing the bike or the mavic air(too many variables), than getting hit by another car. I have a Fly12 for the bike that I have been happy with. These things record for 5-6 hrs, and and have a decent light.
Thanks for the reply Jeff, I'll look into others. I'm currently using a Mobius as a helmet cam.
fly6CE has rear light and camera.
i really like mavic air😊 but i don't have enough money to buying that haha. ✌
I would have been pretty nervous with all those poles and wires along the roadside. I would have had to have the altitude set above them.
Hi Woody i know what you mean. In this case, the old farm road was perfectly straight and wide open fields behind the poles. So as long as i rode straight, the mavic would fly parallel.
hola consulta el soundtrack cual es saludos
Hola Antonio, la banda sonora es el título Teenage Lullaby de Ooyy. Lo encontré en Epidemic Sound.
What screen capture app are you using?
Hi Gary, i am using "AZ Screen Recorder" on my Android. i like it because it captures audible keystrokes/taps on your screen. I am pretty sure it was free.
Thanks @@JeffGreeneChannel
is 6:18 where it is flying around you in tracking mode?
6:18 is showing the 100m limitation when only using the smartphone without the controller.
sorry, meant 8:18. where it flys around you.
oh i see, yep that is trace mode. if you go back to 8:00 you will see an additional slider which allows it to fly in an orbit as it is tracking you.
First time I used active track while on the lake with my boat. I launched drone into air. Pressed fallow, drone was following me, then suddenly lost me, started to go sideways away from me... I took controler into hands but forgotten to switch back to normal mode, then it took few minutes to realize what is a problem, meanwhile, there was low battery warning, and drone said its going to home position. It rised 90 ft into sky and flew away from me... Needless to say, I was panicking, water was all around me... I started following drone with my boat and arrived just on time to home posittion, which was some 900 ft away, and drone landed on my boat... Never again I'm going to do active track. Basically every time I launch my drone, I'm having panic. :)
Wow, that's a great story. I would have been panicking too! I bet you know 100% how RTH works now.
Hai iwish Mavic air dest December plsss
December is not too far away
Nice to see someone else using an Android phone! Love my Apple stock, but I don't want to be part of their ecosystem!
RSARSENAL #SHAKETHEDUST
RatcyclingTPC Ridge Supply indeed!
I tried the active track on my mountainbike. Bit hit and miss with it following. Gonna try a proper mtb trail and see how it does. Here was my first attempt ruclips.net/video/5pc2GpGYYqk/видео.html
marc rowlands thats beautiful scenery! Interesting, it looks like your mavic air tracked you on the descent as well?
Hi Jeff thanks! Yes it tracked well until a bend in the trail and for some reason completely lost track and came to a stop. Was a bit disappointed but felt it done quite well. This mavic air still amazes me with how small it is and can now take it anywhere I go biking!
Seriously, let me ask you something with all your bike gear on do you ride your bike normally that slow to work out NO. This is the dumbest feature on the Mavic Air.. This feature is good if your walking on the beach with your partner during a sunset that is the pace you need to go to accomplish anything worth your time to set up.
Dumbest feature but works for a walk on a beach during sunset? So you mean it isn't a dumb feature but just has limitation like every other feature on every other device?
