That song was sung or played at thousands of weddings in the 90s. But Luther has dozens of beautiful songs. His voice is not only powerful, but one of the best ever to record, he does so many musical "gymnastics" with his voice, that no other singer can duplicate.. He died to soon. AND he is not "old skool". His songs have Never stopped selling. You should go into his catalogue. He has NEVER made a bad song. In fact, I can't think of my favorite because there are so many . (Although a personal favorite is a collaboration with Gregory Hines, "There's Nothing Better Than Love", absolutely beautiful.)

Fun fact Luther Vandross started out as a backing vocalist from Roberta Flack. (LV opened up a Patti Labelle fan club in high school, he sang for Donnie Hathaway. He co wrote Fascination with David Bowie and went on tour with him as Davids backup vocalist in the 70s. he continued singing backing vocals for amazing artists such as Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Carly Simon, Barbra Streisand, Ringo Starr, Sister Sledge, and Donna Summer.
Luther also wrote and sang commercial jingles from 1977 until the early 1980s, for companies such as Mountain Dew, KFC, Burger King, and Juicy Fruit.
It wasn't until 1980 that Luther finally released his debut album Never Too Much in 1981, with his first song Never too Much. He died 1st July 2005, he had a massive stroke in 2003 and was in a coma for nearly 8weeks, and the stroke affected his ability to talk and sing and never performed again. His last ever single to be released was a cover of Marvin gaye song Whats going on, and his last song he wrote and recorded was Dance with my father. Unfortunately Luther had a stroke before he ever got the change record this song live and there is no videos of him singing DWMF song. 😢

Wasn't that just beautiful! Brings back such happy memories. His name is pronounced Luther Vandross with a long "o" sound. I am amazed when I listen to the old songs how tender the words are and respectful of women. Today woman are often so objectified and the lyrics are downgrading them to a body part or making you believe all women want money. Rarely is tender love expressed. Think about it, if tender love is expressed in the songs we hear it then teaches people how to express tender love in their relationships. It makes me sad that the vast majority of love songs today are about breaking up and the bitterness that comes with it. I know those songs have a valuable place in music history, but so do the tender ones. The songs about being in each others arms and promising forever. So beautiful! You guys are doing a great job keep up the good work. I love your comments and hearing your perspective, so fresh and unique.

How he sang “Together” was a transition from his chest voice to his head voice (falsetto), he was a master of this vocal technique. And Patti Labelle was another master of vocal tricks for sure. They both could (Patti still can) change their tone and voice placement on the fly which is a technique few have mastered.

So when Ruben did appear on Idol people saw him as a new Luther Vandross. That's why everyone took to him so quickly. I didn't realize Luther was only 54 when he died. He obviously had an amazing voice. I don't remember a lot of his hits because I wasn't a huge fan of those slow jam type R&B songs. But he was pretty much the go-to guy for that at the time. I sometimes imagine that there's a big gay choir up in heaven with people like him and George Michael and Freddie Mercury, etc. That Choir Director could pump the brakes before taking everyone so soon though.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard that Luther died. It was Labor Day weekend, I was in the kitchen cooking with my daughter and had the radio on. I couldn’t understand why they were playing all Luther songs until the DJ came on after about the fourth song and talked about his life in passing. It really bothered me… Not just because I loved his music, talk about iconic. But I also felt he was true blue to himself and who he was, it was a sad day. So glad we have this music to listen to.

Have you listened to Luther Vandross cover “Always and Forever” with Mariah Carrey? It was originally done by a group called “Heatwave.” The Heatwave version has been my and my husband’s “song” since 1977. We will celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary this coming April. Both versions are excellent so please, react to both.

Luther also sang with the group Change, and sang and arranged backing vocals for David Bowie’s Young Americans album. I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert. He had TWO groups of background singers. That’s how important they were to him. Check out his live performances on RUclips.

His soulful voice is one of the best ever, but if you want one of his more upbeat songs, check out "Stop to Love". It's a great 80s tune. I would also recommend Billy Ocean ("Caribbean Queen", "Loverboy", "Suddenly", "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car"). Great smooth 80s R&B.

What I also love about Luther songs is that his songs always seem to have the best backup vocal parts. They're always so fun and beautiful and with marvelous harmonies. Given he was once a backup singer, I think it's wonderful that his arrangements made lots of room for his backup artists to get to do more than the usual and truly shine. When I saw him in concert, he even did a duet with one of his backup singers and it was GORGEOUS. I love that he highlighted their talents as well as his own. He was a class act.

For many years this was THE wedding song, and is still occasionally played at weddings. There was no one like Luther, one of the last R&B crooners with a direct lineage to Sam Cooke. Luther is my favorite pop singer of his generation and is certainly one of, if not, the best. Watch him doing his live cover version of "A House Is Not A Home" from the BET awards. Then listen to him doing "The Glow Of Love" and "Searching" with the group Change, and his solo work such as "Don't You Know That", "Give Me The Reason", "Never Too Much", his last hit "Dance With My Father", and his beautiful cover version of Leon Russell's "Superstar".

Luther was a modern-day crooner. I'm surprised that you didn't pick up on that. His concerts were always a treat. I saw him at his last concert, which wqas on Valentine's Day. It was at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. He performed all of his hits that he made over his 25-30 year career.
