- There are not many places where you can get this close to an erupting volcano. Guatemala is one.
When we reached the camp at the base of Acatenango, the inactive volcano connected to Vulcan Fuego, an active volcano on the highest alert level, we felt exactly that.
Weirdly enough, the hike to Acatenango and Fuego is one of the most common tours sold in Antigua, the old capital of Guatemala, and the hike to both of these volcanoes is done day in and day out by many tourists and. guides.
We went hiking to the summit of Acatenango just two weeks after Volcan Fuego had a massive eruption, which caused Guatemala city airport to close, a city that's over 60 kilometers away.
The trail that leads to these volcanoes is stunning and the experience of seeing an erupting volcano and lava is unforgettable.
That being said I hope that everyone doing the Acatenango and Fuego hike understands that Fuego can erupt at any time and ultimately, even with the presence of guides, you're hiking at your own risk.
Wow, what an adventure!
