  • ABOUT THIS EPISODE: If magic exists, it’s at the Scrap Exchange in Durham, North Carolina. At least it seems that way, because for over 27 years, they've been turning trash into treasure. So much so, this iconic organization now lays claim to being the largest creative reuse center in the world. And it's easy to believe, because the Scrap Exchange has become a second home for artists, teachers, makers, builders, savers and all kinds of people interested in creative reuse.
Even though they’ve been around for almost three decades, it almost seems like they’re just getting started. Led by the vision of Executive Director Ann Woodward, the Scrap Exchange has embarked on an even more ambitious mission than before. In addition to a 20K+ square foot facility dedicated to creative reuse, they also operate an 18K square foot thrift store. And both operations are located in a shopping center they purchased several years ago with the intent of creating a one-of-a-kind creative reused arts district.
The vision is to turn 12 acres of parking lot into a totally unique mix of retail, affordable housing, artist studios, permaculture and even sports and entertainment. If that’s not enough, the Scrap Exchange is spearheading a $100M+ Global Reuse Initiative and created the National Center for Creative Reuse to distribute the funds and help others make positive impact in their communities too. So sit back and enjoy everything Ann and her team have going at this indispensable community asset in Durham.
