As a 19 year police officer (retired) I must say you give the police way too much credit on powers of observation when they are not in the problem areas or looking specifically for something/someone. Most are oblivious to their surroundings unless they are "switched on" to be on guard for (FOR) something. In my opinion, you were in no danger of being discovered unless you had poor light discipline (fire) or bright light.
Thanks for confirming this. Two things I would assume police don't expect are 1. stealth camping and 2. crime in the direct vicinity of their station. So Steve would basically have to hang his hammock on the fence of the PD, blast music from his phone while chucking empty beer cans at the officers to get some kind of attention.
Hey Steve, I’m a cop in the states, so I can probably explain that car idling all night if it’s done the same way there as it is here. That person would be the watch commander or supervisor(sgt.). They have a pretty boring job unless something big happens where they need to respond, which is why they mostly hang out in the car. They primarily sit in the car approving reports sent in by officers on shift, watching the radio for major incidents, and responding when needed. Hopefully that answers the question on why he never left after all those hours
Imagine living somewhere close to Steve and constantly be seeing him lurking around town, in the woods and some random places acting all shady and paranoid. People just yelling: "STEVE!! GO HOME! YOU OWN A HOUSE NOW!"
I was homeless years ago for a spell, technically this channel is brimming with excellent being homeless advice. I had a Craigslist tent when apparently I *should* have had a tarped hammock.
and Steve’s like “yep, still good they absolutely cant see me” “We see you, Steve. We hear you too.” “perfectly undetected, let’s head back to camp for some beans.” “Go home, Steve.”
I just happened to randomly click on your freeway interchange stealth video and liked it so I click on this one and when the video started I thought "this seems familiar". Then I saw the condos in the background and realized this is my hometown! I grew up here from 71' thru 87'. The police station you camped by did not exist yet. There actually used to be a tree fort where the back of the station is. You camped at the tee off of hole 4. The original station is at hole 8. (My father climbed up the flagpole of that station and was stuck up there while the police stood in the driveway yakking directly below him and didn't even see him. He got away with it). One night around 2 am a few buds and I were riding our bicycles around and got stopped by the RCMP at the exact spot you entered the bushes. lol Last time I was in the Burger Baron was probably 86'. Still has that same faux brick counter i see. Thanks for the memories. Wow what an unexpected throwback this was. I must admit admit seeing this is kind of freaky. Spent my whole childhood and most of teenage years there. Some of my family still live close by. Great video. Glad to have found this channel. I'm subbin' . PS Kibosh that redlight, it's too much of a heat score.
its so refreshing to see just a honest and respectful normal person. so many people are caught up in trying to be something that you can see some fakeness. Steve just camps (along with many other things) but just has a passion for it and it shows, he has inspired me to get back into camping!
STEVE - we love your adventures !!! ******** WHAT’S THAT PLANT ID APP ********. ( it was near instant result,.. most need people to reply ). Thanks loads.
A good cover while entering and exiting your spot is holding the trash bag in your hand and if someone approaches, you can tell them you’re part of a volunteer initiative that is cleaning up the woods in areas that are vastly overlooked! Another banger steve!!!
a sad thing is, the police often don't show any appreciation. they'd probably at the least still tell you to leave. hope the police are better where you live.
Steve, my take on being stealthy with flashlights is this; People wont see the ambient light from your light. What they will see is the light source itself as you are aiming it around or have it set up high, illuminating down on the camp. I found these tiny AAA battery LED tap lights, about half the size of a hockey puck. When set low or on the ground, the ambient light illuminates camp, but there's no glare of light from the light source directly that people will see when passing by. Happy hunkering, my virtual RUclips friend!
Steve, I genuinely had a terrible day, like one of the worst in a while. I cant even make this up, I said to myself "You know what will make you forget everything.....Steve." I couldn't believe my eyes when i opened RUclips. I cant say thank you enough for getting me and I'm sure many other people through some rough times. Keep it stealthy my friend:)
I am of the theory that one of the cops was a fan, he'd gotten spotted early, and the cop on the street is actually watching out for him to make sure nothing happens.
That’s safe place to camp behind a police station. 50 years ago I “stealth” camped inside a police station overnight. Inside was safer, but bare concrete floor wasn’t nice with drunks making noise whole night. I prefer Steve’s way to camp. Economical and simple and peaceful. Thanks for your videos. Watching this in Australia.
I love how Steve camps so often but is so careful about not leaving trash behind, it’d be so easy for him to leave empty beer cans laying in the woods and whatnot but he doesn’t and that’s really wonderful, enjoying nature and respecting it at the same time.
@@MrIgottap : aluminium cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles and containers, and cardboard/tetra drink containers are all worth 10c each at the recycle centers in Australia (as long as the scheme's unique system barcode on the items are still scannable through the reverse vending chute). I know people who collect, and cash in over $100. worth quite regularly. This broadened scheme has only been (re)introduced again nationally for a few years now, but it has overwhelming public approval. I remember back in the late 50's and 60's (yes, I'm in my 7th decade now) there used to be a 6penny deposit on softdrink, milk, and 'long-neck" beer bottles (which we would do the rounds of our neighbourhoods, door to door, with our 'Billy-Carts' in tow, collecting them for our Boy Scout Group collection).
I'm still waiting for the video where Steve is awoken in the middle of the night by a surprised officer saying, "Sir, what exactly are you doing here?"
@@shoazdon7000 usually they don't. However his fear is not completely unfounded. He shouldn't fear security guards or police because they'll just tell him to move, mayyybe write him a ticket. But there are many many bad people out there and the homeless are considered easy pray. They are often jumped, robbed etc. Urban camping is not dangerous because of police or regular citizens finding you, but the thieves, scoundrels and other criminals.

Steve I just watched your roundabout video and was thoroughly confused at first about what on earth you were thinking but after about 5 minutes my confusion turned to curiosity (like I could not look away, I could not gauge what type of person you were or why you’d do these things) and then finally settled into a sense of adventure that reminded me of my childhood. I used to explore the world the way you do and I haven’t done it in a long time. It made me thing back fondly about the days where I would set up in some plants and hide and build forts and just learn things from doing them and that’s not to say I think anything you’re doing is childish, it’s more the opposite. I’m sort of sad I haven’t done anything like this since I was a child. There’s so many interesting places to explore and hide even in the middle of what might be considered a mundane location otherwise. Sorry for the long-winded message but thanks for filming yourself, you’re very interesting and you seem like a kind guy, I can sense it through your videos. Keep on keepin on, I hope you’re doin well! Also I’ve had to do a lot of stealth beer cracks in my day and the slower you go the better! Cheers man!
Same. My kiddos and I set up day camps all the time and they love the advebture of it. I haven't considered taking it a step further and stealth camping out there. Setting up behind a police station might be fun for us. Haha

Steve: I built a walking stick with a flashlight near the bottom with a red lens. A “trigger” on the hand grip turns the light on for as long as it is pulled. This puts the light right near the ground where it is needed. It shines down through a 6” tube to eliminate side flare. The idea is that I can walk through the woods or fields at night and see where I’m stepping but not be seen by passing cars as a hand held flashlight would. It works very well. I can walk at night without anybody seeing me.
@@ThePCPitChannel I’m an amateur naturalist and an outdoorsman….. You see animals at night that you do not see during the day. Have you seen a bobcat in the wild? Wolverine?… The predators are out at night…. That’s when the action happens. Humans fearfully stick close to our little puddles of light and miss it all. Red light around my feet when I need it does not spoil my night vision or alarm the night life. If people see a flashlight bobbing about the ask the question you did… The suspect you are up to no good… simply because “normal people” don’t roam the woods and fields at night…. They cluster around their TV like stupid sheep absorbing nonsense. I’m 66, and have never had one of those infernal mind control machines……. I’ve witnessed things most people only read about, had encounters with countless wildlife…. bears, lions, lynx & bobcat, a couple of wolves, coyotes, fox, wolverines (twice), and of course raccoons, and many other nocturnal creatures……The only time I’ve been afraid in the woods at night was when I sensed that I was being stalked by a lion….. I turned the tables and charged… driving her off. We humans are the apex predator….. and other creatures need to be reminded from time to time….. I do not walk in fear…. or go armed. I’ve done this since childhood…. But I’ve lived in remote places……. What do you do for entertainment? Watch the boob tube?
stealth pointer: at night,...that police station parking lot is brightly lit. that means 2 things. 1- thier nightvision is gone, and 2-those lights are hitting the vegetation between them and you. therefore,...all they can see is the first 18 inches into the foliage and then nothing but jet black. the contrast between the lit up foliage and the blackness beyond is too great and they certainly cant see you standing 10 feet deep in there. remember: the person closest to the light source is at the greatest disadvantage at night ---winning
My wife asked me what it was about Mr. Wallis that I enjoyed so much. "Well, he just seems like a fun, kind, and laid-back guy who likes to camp. He loves his wife, and he just seems nice." "Ah, well, I can see why you'd enjoy some bearded dude enjoying a beer while camping". As always, awesome video!
This is the kind of adult I aspire to be. Your still living life like a kid, and I mean that as the greatest compliment. Doin what you love, enjoying nature, and muffling the sound of the beer so no one hears. The fun is in the risk and the adventure.
Fun fact: A constantly running parked police cruiser at the station is the K-9 unit! They have to keep the car running and the Heat or AC on for the doggy in the backseat. You're lucky he didn't get a whiff of you and was barking his head off all night.

We use red lights in the military so when light is needed on operations the red lens doesn’t effect your night vision...It’s takes about 20 mins for your eyes to adjust to the night light for optimal night vision. If I torched or headlight is used we use tape and form a tiny pin hole on any torch so any light that is given is such a small amount. Great videos Steve ..💚
I think he's mentioned it on a couple videos in the past, Steve is colorblind so the red light doesn't do much for him unfortunately. The pinhole is a good idea to try out though!
@@stephenbaretich7166 yes it defo works ... it surprising how much light you get with a little pin hole left on the lens .. you just get a little beam of light .. enough to read a map or check kit. Enjoy ur day Stephen
Side note, both red and green are both good lights to conserve your night vision. However red is better if you need to read maps etc, and green is better when you need to see contours in nature (so you can move around).
The other thing is that once your eyes have adjusted to the available light, any bright light (white), either sudden or if you were to look at light source for second or two, you have to start all over. With Steve being around all those white light ambient sources, the street lights, the gas station, the headlights on cars going by, his ability to see in the "darkness" is even further diminished, red lens or not.
I'd venture to bet that at least one officer in that station is a subscriber and will be tickled when he realizes that Steve was camping so close. Also I'm guessing that the "wise man" is crazy neighbor!

I once spent a few weeks stealth camping in the USVI's and I honestly think I had a better time than everyone spending a few hundred $'s per night. I hiked around the entire island of St. John and, if there weren't any parking spots, had most of the beaches to myself. One day I climbed to the top of a rocky point and found a secret beach and made the day of it. I went snorkeling and read books everyday. I'd go into town to re-up on supplies and drink $1 Happy Hour Presidente's at the bar. I had a great time
The awesome part about all of this is that, its highly likely, some of these most excellent police officers probably watch your channel for entertainment, and are aware of you by this time. AND, since, you are purely out for entertainment and pose no risk or harm to anyone, that they simply allow you to continue to entertain us all as you always do. LOL

I always clean my spots and pay attention never too bother anyone, thus far I haven't gotten into trouble for it.

I thought this meant you were a 19 year old police officer who is retired

Thanks for confirming this. Two things I would assume police don't expect are 1. stealth camping and 2. crime in the direct vicinity of their station. So Steve would basically have to hang his hammock on the fence of the PD, blast music from his phone while chucking empty beer cans at the officers to get some kind of attention.
Yea, next to the police station is probably the most low key, stealth spot to be in.

I just happened to randomly click on your freeway interchange stealth video and liked it so I click on this one and when the video started I thought "this seems familiar". Then I saw the condos in the background and realized this is my hometown! I grew up here from 71' thru 87'. The police station you camped by did not exist yet. There actually used to be a tree fort where the back of the station is. You camped at the tee off of hole 4. The original station is at hole 8. (My father climbed up the flagpole of that station and was stuck up there while the police stood in the driveway yakking directly below him and didn't even see him. He got away with it).
One night around 2 am a few buds and I were riding our bicycles around and got stopped by the RCMP at the exact spot you entered the bushes. lol
Last time I was in the Burger Baron was probably 86'. Still has that same faux brick counter i see.
Thanks for the memories. Wow what an unexpected throwback this was. I must admit admit seeing this is kind of freaky. Spent my whole childhood and most of teenage years there. Some of my family still live close by.

I’m sort of sad I haven’t done anything like this since I was a child. There’s so many interesting places to explore and hide even in the middle of what might be considered a mundane location otherwise. I built a walking stick with a flashlight near the bottom with a red lens.
You should patent that!
What a great idea!!

Red light around my feet when I need it does not spoil my night vision or alarm the night life.

One time I got the police called on me and they searched me because I had a backpack on when I was walking home from school, they said I was spray painting. You can definitely get in trouble for having a backpack lol, he and I share the same anxiety I think.
I was once harassed by the police for photographing graffiti.
I had a great time
I wish I had the guts to go on an adventure like that!
@@tylermoore5065 I highly recommend it. Bring lots of water and be prepared to walk a lot haha
LOL
It'd be even funnier if one of the cops came up to Steve and said they were fans.
Yes. Yes it’s true.
yeah, I know cops watch.
No such thing as excellent police officers only corrupt pig's
@@krissmith1177 my thoughts exactly 👍
I love watching this stuff, I lived in a tent for a month In this desert area in between neighborhoods maybe a 100 yards off the trail and I never got caught
