tiktok really messed up concert crowds bc it seems like, esp the younger folk, the entire time are waiting for THAT specific portion of a song that is a trend or viral instead of enjoying the show. Knowing they have videos of the concert takes them out of the moment and they just focus on getting a perfect recording bc they know they can replay it later

At Phoebe Bridgers earlier this year there was two young girls in front of us and one of them was clearly the “wannabe influencer” friend and the other was her videographer and she filmed her singing a long and dancing emphatically to E V E R Y song. It ruined the show for me because they had the light on so you could see her face and it was soo annoying and distracting. it was all I could see most of the time because we were at the back of the lawn, they were 5ft in front of us and there was no screen showing us the stage up close so it was literally all I could focus on. 😢 I wish I could properly explain how obnoxious it was. The faces and try hard of it all was 🥴

One of my friends is a really big Willow Smith fan and she went to a Willow concert like a year ago, and she said this exact same thing. She said Willow was getting annoyed with her own crowd because she kept trying to interact with them and tell them to mosh or crowd surf or do certain dance moves, and they were completely ignoring her and only trying to get the video for TikTok. Most of them didn't know any of Willow's music except for the tracks that went viral, and even then they only knew the one little snippet of the song that is used in TikTok videos and such.

Literally. I was at this music festival which has dozens of artists and a few popular artists. Of course, more people came to a certain stage if someone well known was playing and they were pushing past to get closer to the stage and for a better view. The pushing didn’t annoy me so much, but I’d see the same people that were so desperate to get closer but were literally on their phones. If they weren’t on their phones then they’d look bored as hell barely tapping their feet. They would start filming at like 1 part of the song that everyone knew, would be jumping and making the video look so fun then go right back to standing around.

the artist may not be bad people themselves, but fans DO somewhat represent the artist they stan, and even if harry (for example) didnt do anything bad, seeing his fans be toxic and defensive DOES have an effect on people's opinion about the ARTIST. it's shitty but it's true.
i think the main reason so many people just have this general vague dislike towards harry is because his fandom worships him SO MUCH that the public reacts like "wtf he's not god on earth calm tf down" and that develops into a "he's not that good" and so on and on...

As if she doesn't have a set list. Like she doesn't live to serve you. I feel like she hated the crowd too, because by the end she barely talked between songs and looked like she was just trying to get through it. The crowd was younger than they usually are at the concerts I've been to and I'm wondering if growing up with social media also makes people feel like they can ask more of a musician. When I went to the Script at 17 I knew for a fact they had no clue who I was and social media was a bit of a thing already but in no way like what it is now.

I’ve worked in the music industry since 19 (I’m 27 now) as a bartender, a venue manager, merch, security, box office and now as a sound tech! I’d love to weigh in on this because I’m glad you were able to notice some of these things.
The etiquette thing is so real. For example, there’s a tiktok trend where I guess you fall backwards; there was a show for a tiktok famous artist, so a lot of young people. Before the show these kids were CLIMBING ONTO THE STAGE (which is set up with expensive gear) TO FALL BACKWARDS ONTO IT AND DO THIS TREND. My bf was very satisfied using the talk back mic to blast “please get off the stage” thru the monitors and they scattered. Never in my life.
In the industry, there’s a term called “punishing”; it refers to fans who go up to artists after the show and trap them into a trauma dump with no regard for other fans waiting to say hello to their favorite artists. This trauma dumping on artists has become more frequent. Please y’all, they’re on tour, it’s already hard to get thru certain songs for them bc they have to relive their own shit. Ask yourself, “is this a conversation for my therapist?”
Finally, tours have gotten significantly smaller. Where previously you would get a tour manager, a merch manager, a videographer and instrument techs all touring with the band; now in mid to large sized tours, all these jobs frequently land on one person, sometimes even a band member themself. Also, venues are all understaffed. Venues are greedy af and don’t want to pay security what they deserve. It’s an extremely dangerous and important job and these people risk a lot to keep shows safe. A lot of us venue staff depend on shows happening, and we are still cancelling lots of shows because of Covid. Many folks have left the industry in search of stability. In my opinion, shows are not as safe. We had a hardcore show the other night where we couldn’t find any security to work. It was a small to mid sized tour, so like 250 ppl. There was a huge fight. Blood all over the bathroom. Nobody to break it up but other people in the crowd.

My worst experience with concerts was Ariana Grande in 2019. I used to be a big fan of Ariana. The show was sooo bad it was laughable. More than half the show was listening to pre-recorded Ariana songs, like they just played them while the dancers were on stage. And not just a little clip of a sing - it was whole 3 minutes songs. She would sing, pre recorded song would play she go backstage and dancers be dancing on stage, she came back and sang a song then went backstage again. I guess her singing was good but the whistle notes were clearly also pre-recorded so she was miming. Absolutely ridiculous, me and my friend left early.

Whenever you see someone who's passed out at a gig they are always in the middle where they can't get water. It's unbelievable that so many venues don't allow water bottles especially if people are going to be leaving the plastic cups from the bar on the floor anyway

I guess this is an unpopular take, but I love looking back at the recordings I made of concerts! I've been to a couple bts concerts in 2018/2019 and I still look back at the videos I took there once every couple months. I know I could look online for professional recordings of those tours, but at a concert with such incredible visual dynamics and audience synergy, it's a completely different vibe looking at my recordings.
I do limit how much I have my phone out, but my first bts concert I recorded in pieces about half an hour of a 2.5 hour show and I'll watch all of it back and feel transported to that time and those moments.
at more intimate/less visually impressive shows I find myself looking back at the videos much less, so I think in the future I'll just leave my phone out of those experiences.

I will never forget this guy who held on to me for DEAR life for a minute straight when he saw I was almost ran over by the crowd opening up for a pit. It's hard to put that responsibility on the artists, but ofc if a crowd is out of control that's going to create bad press. Legally, it's very complex which party is responsible for safety. It depends on the contracts between the venue, management, etc.

Went to Yungblud recently. Absolute Carnage.
He's a rock artist. Flamethrowers on stage. Crowds of thousands pouring with sweat. Upwards of 40, if not 50, degrees in the pit (in Fahrenheit, that's 105 to 122 degrees).
Security seemed more focused on making sure everyone stayed in their pen and didn't run the stage than getting concert goers water and medical attention.
There was no way any of us were losing our spots at the front of pit to line up at the arena's canteen and buy a water. Security usually hand out cups of water on trays that get passed around the pit before and during the opener for this very reason. They also usually turn the air conditioning to extremely cold because everyone knows 10 000 people in a room dancing is going to get hot. They didn't do either.
About 15 people PER SONG had to be dragged over the barricade at the front of the pit because they'd passed out. The venue, management and security were 100% responsible for the chaos. I heard many people afterwards discussing the similarities between our show and Astroworld. The greatest difference was the culture of Yungblud's fanbase and the fact he stopped the show multiple times. If not for those, it could've gotten really out of hand.
Keeping people safe and making sure they have a good time is definitely a collaborative effort.

I was at a Bryson Tiller concert earlier this year and it’s like decently chill R&B and we somehow ended up at the front and i’m 23 i was noticing a lot of seemingly younger people there who really had no idea how to act. They were shoving to the front and pushing before the opener even went on. It was standing room only and by the time the opener had gotten through like one song, I was starting to black out because of how hot it was and how many people were shoving us. My bf had to literally drag me through the crowd to get me out (he ended up going back in to meet up with friends bc i didn’t want him to have to miss it) But I had to sit outside in the lobby just chugging water and trying not to panic bc it was just way too intense. I don’t understand why people can’t just give people a little bit of space. The back area had a bar and water stand and it was completely open. It was like one big room standing room, no seats and the entire crowd was shoved all the way to the front. I was able to go back in and stand at the back and I could literally see EVERYTHING from there like it was not a bad view especially for a concert that was maybe $100. There was almost no one back there, just some older looking people maybe like late 20s dancing and being very chill. I just don’t understand why everyone feels the need to be all the way at the front. We had just happened to be towards the front of the line to get in so that was where we ended up. Idk dude this is wild tho.

FINALLY I'm seeing more of this take. Some people have become so wrapped up in this "main character" way of thinking that they believe the entire show is catered solely to them. Concerts used to be a place to connect with the artist and with those you share a music taste with. Unfortunately, we are seeing it becoming just another place for people to over-record to prove they were there to those who follow them.
I also think more artists are taking mental health time off because their own fans view them more as a product to suck content out of rather than a human who is trying to share their art, and at times the more vulnerable part of themselves, with the world.

@@mistress.villaina7591 exactly this is why I love the Louis Tomlinson fandom (and 1D fandom) because it really feels like most of the hardcore stans don’t really care about “new” music, we’ll get hyped when he’s gonna come out with a new album, but we’re not just there to get the album content, we’re there for the connection with Louis, we’re there to stream his songs on repeat analyzing the lyrics, we’re here to look at the unreleased songs and just sit there in amazement wondering how it didn’t make the cut… most listeners now don’t end up being anything more than casual fans of people I feel like, so they’re not in it for the artist/person but just for their music. (and I mentioned 1D because we are the prime example of this they literally haven’t been together in 6 years and haven’t released anything and we still are here supporting their new content and current lives and reminiscing about the old stuff and even though we want them to get back together someday nobody thinks they “owe” it to us and we really just want them to be happy)

I definitely think the "pandemic maturity gap" has definitely affected concerts more specifically big arena/festivals. I saw Tame Impala this year (2022), and I actually saw them in 2012 my freshman year of college. I point this out because the difference between the two concerts was that now Tame Impala play arenas and in 2012 they played local mid-tier venues and thus have different crowds and vibes. Unfortunately, for this recent concert, it felt like a lot of college kids were going super hard with drugs because they had to stop the concert during the OPENER (Jungle Pussy) cause someone had passed out from intoxication and then thrice during Tame Impala's set. There was an ambulance outside when we left the venue and several college kids were getting pulled out on stretchers. Not because they were crushed or had physical injuries, but because they were just going super hard. I think this is why I never appreciated big concerts and preferred more intimate local venues. Better etiquette and generally more age diverse and thus respectful.

Really enjoyed this video especially when you explained concert etiquette. Most to some people don't understand or they do understand and ignore certain accidental shoving or pushing. Things happen all the time, the best you can do is raise your hands up and say "Let's call it a night. I'm sorry. Let's dance" Accidents will happen. I've been to concerts more than twenty times pre Covid and people always seem nice and (some)willing to forgive and forget because at the end of the night. You won't see them again once the concert ends.
Also, the water problem can be resolved if they simply had water fountains installed in various sessions. I'm always carrying my water bottle 25oz and a vitamin tablet. It keeps me hydrated and ready to go, and since I like my water to taste like raspberries or fresh cucumbers (Vit Tablets) is great! Amazon and Etsy sell the bottle carry-on with straps, I've danced with it before and it works.
*The mobile cellphone problem can be resolved if they (the venue or arena) kept the entry capacity below [capacity per person in the building] but because they rather sell tons of tickets and overflow the space until someone passes out. The crowd can be around the ring, and security of four at each entrance so if something happens during the performance, they can get to the person(s) in time. And they will be more vigilant to see who's got their phones out and recording when the artists suggested: "I'd lie to let everyone know that cell phones will not be allowed during sets. So, after the concert, we will help the cleaning crew with pickup and if you guys stick around and see me cleaning, we can take pictures together and I will sign your items. Thanks in advance!" If security or the artists sees you with cellphones out, there will not be any recording, pictures and /or signings. Concertgoers need to learn to enjoy the moment and respect the artist's wishes.*

Touring can be very rewarding but it is extremely hard on you physically and mentally, even if you're not the type of artist like Billie who has a very physical set (lots of roaming the stage, moving around etc.) What makes it worth it for me is meeting new people and new bands, although I imagine at Billie's level a lot of that is gone for security reasons. One of the hardest parts of touring is finding food and finding time to eat. Most of what's open in a given city after a show is going to be junk food or fast food and you often don't have time to eat before the show, so then you're stuck eating fast food for dinner every night. You can't cook (unless you stay with someone who has a kitchen or you can afford an air bnb) and you don't have access to a fridge, so any groceries you buy have to be kept in the hot car which really limits the kinds of foods you can buy. You spend most of each day in the car and at the show, so you don't often get to see that much of whatever city you're in. If you want to shower, you have to ask strangers if you can use their shower and hope they're not creeps. You usually sleep on a floor or couch, unless you can afford an air bnb, so you have to worry about safety and your back always hurts. You also usually don't get much sleep. Tour is absolutely worth it and can be very fun, but it's really not glamorous. The only glamorous part is the show. The rest is just hard hard work.

I never had a bad concert experience and I am from Montreal. First of all our concert venue is probably not as a big and therefore not as packed. Artists always say they love coming here because most of the crowd is really there for the artist and want to enjoy it. There was one incident with Pink Floyd in 1977 but that’s about it.

I went to a Declan McKenna's concert a few months ago and I was SO hyped and ready to dance. When my sister and I got there we were so disappointed. The crowd was lame af and some girls literally asked ppl who sang to shut up 💀
Nobody was dancing or singing when declan's songs are such a vibe and the man himself is going crazy on stage !
I actually fit in the "younger crowd" Category cause I'm 17 but I totally agree with you on the lack of fun people my age have.
I went to Harry Styles's concert with some friends and it was one of them's second concert and she didn't want to dance?! She thought she was going to sit the whole show.
It really is weird to me that during a show, people wouldn't dance because they're embarrassed. I feel like during a concert we can be whoever we wanna be and it doesn't matter if you don't know how to dance you're there to have fun not to "look good".
So if anyone who's never been to a concert needs an advice I'd say be whoever you wanna be, dance as much as you want to and song at the top of your lungs. You're never gonna see the people around you again. You paid for your ticket so HAVE FUN (and be nice. If people around you are crying or dancing or singing don't judge them. They're just alive and happy)

I went with two friends and we all ended up separated from each other for the entire show because people were literally elbowing and shoving us apart to move inbetween us and get closer, it was wild. And no diss to declan, i get people get tired and stuff, but the energy onstage did not match the craziness of the crowd he seemed very subdued lol...dont get me wrong I absolutely shake ass like nobodys watching at a concert but it was just so violent there i have never been so beaten up lol

the only concert i've been to, i went with my older sibling post-quarantine. it was typhoon, a band she introduced me to, so us going together was really big. i was pretty scared of being in a closed space with a bunch of people - and it was at an 18+ venue, but the concert was all ages - but we got a good spot with one of the only chairs at the front of this side balcony area (great for 2 people w/ body issues). everyone was super chill and i remember the lead singer, kyle morton, told us he was still getting his voice back so he'd appreciate it if we helped. hearing everyone sing along to most of the songs (even if i didn't know all of them myself) was kind of magical, and the interactions between him and the crowd were all really sweet too. the two girls who got there early like we did and slow danced together while waiting for the opening acts (both of which were bands big sib liked and also were really cool and i'm happy that was my intro to them !!!) were super sweet lol. i'm really happy it was my first concert and it reduced a lot of my anxiety around going to concerts in general :)

i went to see tv girl and they were great. but the crowd…had the worst experience of my life with two girls in front of me. they separated our group which wasn’t good cos one of us needed her medication and these two girls were blocking here from getting it. they filmed us singing and started making fun at us. one of them fell into me and knocked me onto the ground and she just laughed and didn’t apologise. started being homophobic to my friends and got into a screaming match with them. they vaped into this one girl’s face who has asthma and she had to leave the crowd even tho she politely asked them to stop. after the show it was incredibly obvious it was their first show.
EDIT: they looked abt 15ish so originally i gave them the benefit of the doubt of just not knowing concert etiquette, but after a while it became obvious they were just rude.

omg im so sorry that happened to you! i went to go see Tv Girl to with my brother back in like early December. I love, love, love, the band with all my heart but the crowd; the crowd was okay and people were singing (kinda) but at times i feel like i couldn’t even sing as loud as i wanted to because the crowd was so quiet because they didn’t actually know any of the songs. I feel like i was the only one that actually listened to tv girl and listened to all their albums and not just lovers rock or not allowed because once those songs came on then the crowd got really loud. i feel like since TikTok, People are just going to concerts to hear the 1 or 2, 15 second popular parts of the “TikTok popular” songs that the band has made and not even pay attention or listen to the full albums or any other songs besides the virals one. So i feel like concerts nowadays are just filled with a bunch of fake fans from TikTok and so when they go to 2 or 3 hour long concerts just to only know 1 or 2 songs of course they’re not gonna have a good time because they can’t sing anything and are probably bored waiting for hours just for the only song(s) they know to come on therefore they throw off the whole vibe of the entire concert and even sometimes like in your story, make the concert a bad experience for everyone else. But that was my experience with them. They played really great though! great stage presence too plus just being able to see and listen to them in person and i got a cool t-shirt and vinyl so it was worth it. (agian sorry about your friend and the whole situation with her medication! i hope she was okay!)
