That’d be annoying though if you had to pay by cash. #shrapnel

One in the eye for the banks! 😉
This wins comment for me today. They could do it at that too and still be making at least 300% profit the profit margins on Thai food is ridiculous
I love it when I see cash only lol
Hi Gary, I've been in a downward spiral recently with alcohol, depression, loneliness - all that good stuff. I love your reviews because of the positivity, and also the way you guys film it makes me feel like I'm actually there in the restaurant. For 20 or so minutes I can actually get out of my own head which is so nice. When you pulled out that Rick Stein book I was in stitches lol. 🤣Keep being you Gary (and cameraman) you don't always realise who you are helping sometimes.
Many thanks,
Jacob.
edit: Thankyou guys so much for all your amazing messages to me❤I genuinely feel so uplifted the support is unreal. I'm so proud to be part of this community! Sending you all love ❤and see you all on the next video! 👌
Amazing, the power some RUclipsrs have, isn't it? I hope you're ok, Jacob x
Jacob, please know you are not alone. I also deal with loneliness and depression, but I found good people who support and encourage me, where I am in a good place now. Know you are among friends who have excellent taste in an amazing and humble UK food blogger, who shares his food experiences with us all. Sending you healing hugs and prayers that you find the help and care you need. Kindest regards, Anna-Marie in Pennsylvania USA!
So very sorry. I hope you can find some happiness. Since the death of my two husbands I've not been lonely as I have my dogs for company (a commitment, expense and restricting but lovely company) and I volunteer at my local hospital which gives life meaning. I hope you can find what works for you. x
I’m so very sorry to hear that Jacob. Please drop me an email when you can. Thank you.
@@simonsackett Thankyou Simon
Kudos to Gary not only on his videos but the community he's brought together. Cheers, mate!
This is probably the nicest comment section on RUclips genuinely 😄❤
@MitchellKJones: In full agreement.
I agree. This is a friendly place.
It's a fantastic channel, with the best community on RUclips Paul 👍
It's truly wonderful comment section (most of the time lol) the community we have all built is fantastic to see
A bookshop and a restaurant! I love books- I love food! Eat your heart out Waterstones!
Don't give Waterstones any ideas lol
but i like Water and I like stones!
I'll get lost in there do like a read and willing to expand my taste buds
Many Thai restaurants have a swap shelf for books for tourists.
I love how books make the acoustics so chill
Yep that’s how I saw it as well
Superb review Gary as always.
I work with a Thai woman who told me proper Thai food needs to be cooked for hours, and this is obviously what’s been done here.
You’re a lucky man and this restaurant deserves all the business.
My only criticism?
I’m watching this in Canada, haven’t eaten dinner yet, and my mouth is watering!!!!!
All the best sir, this is a gem.
Hi Alan, head down to your local Thai place in Canada and give it a go!! Thank you and all the best
@@GaryEats ❤️
100k! Congratulations sir, you're an inspiration to lots of new youtubers!
This time next year there will be a PhotoFit of Gary issued to staff of every restaurant in the UK. " If you see this man walk in ..hit the Alert button, drop what you’re doing, don't mess up or you’re sacked!".
In 5 years, ‘GaryEats Stars’ will carry more weight than Michelin Stars!!
Lol I can't tell you how much this comment made me smile and laugh at the same time, thank you
I used to work for a well known fast service chain and we had mystery shoppers. The results of the mystery shops carried a big weight at head office and as we had cctv we soon could work out who the mystery shoppers were so as long as we were on the ball, they always got extra fast service and of course the hottest fries!!
In a way I hope not. As much as Gary deserves success part of what makes his channel so great is the authenticity of the reviews. If restaurants start recognising him and deliberately giving him great food and service in comparison to the average joe, as I expect they do with other certain big RUclips reviewers, it'll lose that :(
I agree.
It would have been great to see the chef.
PS - Don't you ever use the napkin?
Brilliant choice, terrific review. There will now be a stampede to get there. Gary, the one many promoter of local businesses! Well done.
Thank you ever so much Stephen
As someone who dines alone 90% of the time, I particularly enjoy watching your videos while eating. Curries looked exceptional! 🌶😋
Glad you like them! I hope you are all good
I just love those moments of silence when the food is hitting the palate. Does he love it or hate it?
Brilliant.
That’s very kind to say, thank you very much
Well done Gary, these places are hidden gems and deserve to get supported. The cooking is always up to scratch and well done to everyone that highlight these wonderful spots😊❤
Thanks so much David 👍
No where but the UK where you get this, so quirky and unique! Love the fact you review unknown places as well as the well-known! I can only imagine how much I these small restaurants appreciate your videos Gary! They must improve their revenue after your reviews (if positive lol). What a promotion of our small business that will boost them and as the channel grows, people will be fighting to book these resturants! Keep up the fantastic work!
Thank you Michelle, that's very kind and I try to mix it up. Take care!!
They are popular in Kyiv, the books are for customers to read as they relax. Also found them in Czech Republic
Have you travelled outside of the UK yet Michelle ?
This was Thai though?
Common in Australia. 🦘
50% of the experience is the environment you sit in. Gary was half way to enjoying his meal, then the attention to detail and quality of the food was brilliant, allowing the experience to be one he will repeat. Very clever customer service. 👍👏👏
You have nailed it... couldn't agree more
A A Gill called it 'conviviality'. Can't be faked!!! I heard his talk at Hay on Wye when I was a volunteer.
So true. I think Gary knew the second he sat down he thought "we're on to a good one here" haha. He's right about London as well. If this was in London it would probably be on every "hidden gem" article on the web.
This is probably the happiest I have seen you, and that's saying a lot since you're almost always smiling. You really do bring joy to others. Makes me wish I was in the UK so I could try these places.
That’s so kind, Cynthia. Thank you very much. I really enjoyed this one.
I live in Hastings, didnt even know this restaurant was here, im definitely going there now, thanks for your review
It was absolutely excellent Stevie, give it a go
Only a few short days ago Gary got to 100K - Subscribers are already now at 104K
Well done Gary and the Camera Man
Thank you ever so much Tony, very kind
I suscribed yesterday!! I love the reviews.
To hell with all these Michelin Star crooks out there, this is it !!
Nailed it!!
@@GaryEats thanks a lot.But this must be said, you are a very honest chap in the culinary jungle !!
Michelin star crooks! Well said!
Loved the whole concept of this place. What struck me was the fact that it seemed so calm. I loved the fact that there was no music blaring in the background as I hate that if I’m going out for a meal as it takes away from the relaxation.
It was very relaxing and serene, loved it
Gary, once again your enthusiasm and ability to identify raw quality is simply outstanding. As it happens as I write this a Thai green chicken curry is simmering on the range. Thanks Gary, keep up the good work.
JimN
Wow Jim, thank you that's huge praise
What a brilliant idea for a restaurant. However, I suspect for bookworms it's rather dangerous to the wallet. You're bound to eat for long enough to spot many books to purchase.
It's wonderful isn't it... very quirky but so so brilliant
let it be!
Never seen chicken satay served like that, usually little lumps on wooden skewers, that looked mouth watering! I love spicey Thai food, their sauces are to die for, when done well, the way you spoke they were done well and it deserved a 10star because of the way you spoke, with that catching smile on your face, real cloth napkins and shiny cutlery what's not to like!!!
Yep, I was shocked by how good the presentation was!
Glad you mentioned the Chicken Satay as I've been bursting to comment but didn't (under no circumstances on this awesome channel) want to post an original negative comment.
There's no such thing as CS in Thai food. It's a Malaysian dish and you would be hard-pressed to find it anywhere in Thailand, except for tourist traps that also flog Pad Thai and Green Curry. Satay in Thailand is pork...moo.
If you do find it, it would never be chicken breast, always thigh, as breast is 1. too expensive and 2. too dry.
I really admire Gary but when it comes to Thai food he's very 'Western'; Green curry is purely a Bangkok thing and Panang or Phanaeng Curry is the mildest Thai curry out there.
Restaurant seems quite special though, but he should have gone for the Tom Kha Kai.
Anyway, rant over, and sorry to hide it as a reply hehe.
@@jonnywas2665 Wouldn't call it a rant, you sound like you know what you're talking about! Personally and through some experience with Asian foods, the majority of Thai, Chinese, Indian cuisine in the UK are westernised, very little I suspect would be found in the countries they proclaim to be from. When I was still a schoolboy I had a friend whos family was from Jaipur, I went to "tea" many times at his home and ate some wonderful food, most of which I couldn't pronounce, his mother and older sister were amazing cooks, barely any of that food I had there, have I seen in Indian restaurants to this day! After all the most popular "curry" dish in the UK was invented in Glasgow, supposedly! I love tasty, spicey food, not to hot anymore, but food with flavour and oomph! One day when Gary has reached a million, he will probably be able to afford a trip to Thailand or Malaysia or both and try the real thing!
We’re happy when Gary enjoys his food 😂
Thank you ever so much lol
Your enthusiasm and passion is so endearing. xx
That’s so kind to say as always, Lindsey xx
I love it when you find a gem such as this, They obviously got the basics right and more, nothing pretentious on those plates, just great food cooked well, My guess is they are going to get a lot busier, that was a superb review Gary, Cheers Gav.
Spot on Gav and thank you

I know Hastings very well. I know this restuarant, but I've never eaten there. In fact my 1st feature film was made there back in 2022. It has a special place in my heart.
Give it a go and congrats!
I have lived in Thailand for 12 years and have never been disappointed . The best food can be found at any stall that is busy. But it is difficult to find anything wrong anywhere.
Thank you for all the information, Jonathan. It’s appreciated.
Hastings is the new Cornwall. Talk about re-invention. Has been for some time for those of us going often but now Gary's found it - watch it blow up
I really hope people go and visit as it’s a local business and we don’t use it will lose it
Great to go to these hidden gems. Variety is super when quality comes through . Congratulations Gary ! 😊😊😊

I prefer using cash. It's my money and I'll spend it how I like, without being tracked!!! Looks like a great place. Plenty books, which I like and food! Brilliant.

Fair comment Andrew and thank you
@GaryEats you have a great, honest channel, mate. Keep going. And thanks for replying. A totally decent bloke.
Thank you!!
I think we should always try to use cash in small business. There is nothing worse than waiting on your money to be transferred and then their fees never mind the costs of upkeep on the card machines.
Best food channel on RUclips bar none
Gary's videos are essential viewing.
That is big big praise and one that I'm so humble to hear, thank you
Definitely the best reviewer,no gimmicks just an honest review and a gent, the thinking man's reviewer.

Yes I agree. May I just add the very best camerawork.
I loved everything about this video, Gary. I love Thai food. I love books. And I love your passion and enthusiasm! Very well done, Sir! 😊

Brilliant review Gary, thanks for showing us what I think is a family run venue. Great work 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Just watched the Christmas dinner at The Old Fighting Cocks, at the end you say something you often do “Would I go back?” Would be a nice little series to revisit some of the places from back in the day before you were famous 😂
Lol that made me laugh, yes I can possible do that although last time people got annyoed that I went back to James May's Pub
Top quality food in a bookshop im stunned and you was and the price its unbelievable really , what more can you ask for food and wine and a good old book , your channel is a 10 ★ never boring , your review is always honest and you bring a smile on all our faces
Couldn't agree more! Thank you 😄
I know that so many choose to eat at chains that you obviously have to cover them but I absolutely love it when you review independents, especially one as unique and good as this seems to be!
I have to say, visiting independent restaurants is my favourite especially when they’re this good
10 out of 10!
Simple and complex at the same time to produce a great taste experience. Clearly a lot of thought and experience has influenced the creator(s) of these dishes.
Top choice Gary and a testament to those who recommended it to you.
Also found that the if you regularly eat food more hotly spiced, the more tolerant you become and enjoy it more.
One of the easiest I've ever given Roger, thank you
Ah- the place you mentioned in your comment the other day. Looked spot on. When we cook here my daughter-in-law is keen to taste as she cooks for us to make it perfect and no doubt the same at that restaurant. I do find that even the spiciest Thai food tends to not upset my tummy the next day like other cuisines can too.
The very same Mark!
We used to live in Hastings but left before this place came on the scene, we do go back now and again and next time we will be visiting here. Brilliant vid Gary.
Give it a go Gerald, thank you
You probably need to make a reservation after this video goes viral
Hey Gary, great to see you featuring the town which became my home 9 years ago and there are so many great unique places to eat in Hastings and St Leonards on Sea.
Lovely old Hastings, enjoyed it
I have lived in Thailand for over 20 years and have NEVER been able to do a review like that. I'm not good at Thai spicy. My English wife is and she just asked me if we could go back for a visit. Som Tam THAI is one of her favourites. Great review Gary.
Thank you very much that’s very much appreciated
I am so glad I found you I eagerly await your new vlogs, you are a fantastic food reviewer and always put a big smile on my face thank you Gary, you deserve all the viewers in the world xx

104k subscribers just amazing in the time you started this incredible channel. What could be better than a decent book shop and fantastic Thai food. That chicken satay looked amazing. Perfectly described too👍
Thank you very much, David. Do you know how much I appreciate your comments?
Thats a very quirky, unique restaurant! Your face on 1st bite of the starter told me everything! It did look like art! I thought the beef sauce looked so beautiful. Thai cuisine is very intelligent. The whole ethos is balance. Great review Gary! A footnote, I have no issue with cash-only to avoid extortionate banking fees, although many commenters equate it to tax-fiddles!
Amazing isn't it? Beautiful restaurant
Class - These places deserve the recognition. Love the pure honest reviews, don't change Gary!
That’s very kind to say, thank you very much
This place looks amazing, so unique. Well done to the 2 people who recommended it, a great find for your channel and most importantly, you enjoyed it!
It was absolutely excellent Samuel, loved it
Gary, your videos have really helped me take my mind off a rough time in my life. Thank you so much. ❤
You are so welcome and I really hope things are ok for you
I love Thai food and spent quite a lot of time in Thailand years ago. I would go for months at a time and I ate pretty much just Thai food while I was there (never been able to see the point of going to a foreign land and then eating what you eat at home). Thailand is an amazing place, and I have been to a lot of countries so have plenty to compare it with. The scenery is beautiful, the people are wonderful (it's not called "the land of smiles" for nothing) and the culture is great. Next time I am in the UK I might have to visit that restaurant, my wife would love it.
Delicious cuisine I must say
Now that is a restaurant meant for me. My passion is reading and collecting books. You are spot on when you said that there is a calming effect sitting among all those books. Whenever I want that effect I sit in my living room which has seven floor-to-ceiling bookcases holding several thousand hardcover books. I can look at all the ones I've read and all the ones still to be read. I can pull down a favorite and open it at random and read a few pages. And to have that experience while having a wonderful Thai meal, pure heaven. That food looked delicious. I wish we had smell-o-vision.
This was simply outstanding and definitely one I’d recommend for the future
Thai food and books... heaven! 🥰
Could you ask for much more?
I was just about to say the same thing. £2 corkage for a bottle of wine and I'd be in there all day! 🌶📚
This channel has come such a long way & it's great to see. Others don't bother with Subscriber interaction once they get above a certain size, yet here we have over 1.5k comments & he replies to the majority... Top man is our Gary
That’s very kind to say thank you very much. I really respect everyone for watching and commenting it is a bit of a struggle to reply to everyone but while I can still do it I definitely will.
Great review. Thai flavours can produce tastes that are unique. I am so happy you had that superb meal. Mouthwatering.
I’ll have to say this was outstanding cooking
You finally found the best off the best meal in London ! I hope you get the chef a big Tumb upp !!
I certainly did. The chef done a great job,
Oh, this caught my eye!
I love Thai food, and this looks like very homely, honest cooking. You can immediately tell it's no chain restaurant.
Lovely sticky rice, care with presentation, and I can just tell from your reaction Gary that it is delicious.
Chilli, when used correctly, is like salt; it lifts the flavours in a way that, without it, the meal is just flat.
Bravo for Thai food on this channel! 👏
Thanks so much Sean, it was absolutely delicious and glad you like Thai food!
I love quirky places well away from chains and the herds who eat there (careful Ian!). Great find and this is exactly why your channel is booming, knowledgeable reviews at a great variety of places.

Loved this review, the food looked amazing, love Thai cuisine. You really looked so genuinely happy. Love it!
Thank you ever so much Linda, yes absolutely adored the place
Fed up paying bank charges, fed up paying income tax
What did you think of the food?
My small local corner shop actually charge the customer a 60 pence transaction fee if using a debit/credit card. They do not highlight this and only on checking my receipt one day, did I realise that. So they must be making a fortune on this. So obviously they are not paying bank charges on their card machine but their customers are. I find that abhorrent. However, if this cafe adopted this form of payment, then they would not be responsible for payment. For such quality of food customers would only be happy to pay a small admin fee - well I would.
Reminds me of the Little Britain sketch where she (Ting Tong) turned the guy’s flat into a Thai restaurant when he was out. 😊
And as a foot note I’d rate Thai food (having been there) as the best in the world.
I think Thai food is up there with the best
Was it Ting Tong or Tong Ting?

If you like Thai, you should try Chim’s in Cheam Village, Sutton. Best Thai food I’ve ever eaten (and I’ve been to Thailand!!!)
Thanks for the recommendation, Jessica. I’ll take a look and add it to the list.
That looked brilliant. I'm in Eastbourne so it's not far away. If you're ever in Lewes and fancy a bit of Thai food try pestle & mortar. It's an Asian grocery store by the train station that's serves a limited menu to takeaway ( I'm not sure if you can eat in). I don't like food too spicy so I had a massaman curry last time I was there but they do spicy food as well, beware the papaya salad.
This is definitely worth making a visit from Eastbourne. You won’t be disappointed.
