The 52 episode rule was what my film teacher calls the most disappointing moment of his life, where he was an animator on Animaniacs and it got canceled because of that stupid rule
dayum
But Animaniacs ran for 99 episodes technically 100 if you count Wakko's Wish
But Animaniacs lasted 99 episodes, so that can't be right. I thought it was cancelled because Kids WB didn't like how much of its audience was adults.
BTW which studio did your teacher work for?
Watch a 107 facts video about it and or Wikipedia it and you'll know it ran for 99 episodes and no none of my teachers worked at any animation studios
No, I was responding to Coolbean.
You should've talked about how Heffer appeared at the end of Camp Lazlo, meaning both shows take place in the same universe canon wise.
And Lumpus cameos in Staric cling
I don't know if that's canon but if it is that's pretty interesting.
Defective Factoid Bot where was he!??!
if that’s true then all of cartoon networks shows would as well
That pause at the Chris Savino part has no words yet says so much.
I almost thought the video froze. Then it I thought "Ooooooh."
I don't know much about Loud House so I didn't get it. Can someone explain?
Tlacua Che Chris Savino was fired from Nickelodeon for being a sexual predator
Tlacua Che He was fired from Nickelodeon after it was found out that he sexually had harassed women.
Well damn... thanks for answering.
the thought of doug being marketed as counterculture is actually hilarious
Whaddya mean? Doug was a real fuckin rebel. He wore a belt on his head.
Kurt Cobain wishes he could he had Doug's fire-brand.
Back on schedule hopefully
RebelTaxi why do you only upload on Tuesday
RebelTaxi welcome back pan!
RebelTaxi you better

“Maria, this book is overdo.

That was a real tearjerker... :'( how could someone be so careless.
Such tragedy.

As a native spanish speaker that was funny
@@raidenstark315 yeah
I assumed the tour guide was avoiding the Eiffel Tower because he was dumped there and developed abandonment issues ever since.
HellRay nah. That dude was fucking insane.🤣🤣🤣🤣The whole chase scene was hilarious.
I mean I thought he was just insane but watching the show now that im older, he was clearly avoiding the Eiffel Tower, and was too attached to his tourists on his bus. The implication was there.
I always assumed it was because it was the most popular attraction and that pissed him off, but your story is better
I'm crying from laughter. My cool shades are fogging up.
It's actually because it's illegal to take pictures of the eiffal tower. I know this comment is late, but yeah.
Wait a minute, magic meat ball?
iCarly ripped this off!
It could have been a shoutout to Rocko since they both aired on Nick.
Well, Rocko was aired before iCarly exists. So I think it's inaccurate. The magic meat ball will be forever my childhood thing.

Does anyone remember when Joe Murray the creator of Rocko's Modern Life refused to appear in a McDonald's commercial promoting Camp Lazlo?
Is there a source I can read on that?
Seems pretty interesting.
Here's a link to the blogpost where Bill Murray talks about this. joemurraystudio.com/3200/december-9-2014/
Really? Why was that?
I already linked someone to it in the replies of my comment.
He didn't want to promote childhood obesity.
Not gonna lie, when Savino showed up i thought the video actually froze up from discomfort.
This show helped me out during my senior year of high school. I still didn’t know what I wanted to do after high school. At that time I watched Rocko’s Modern Life for the first time ever (same goes with Ren and Stimpy, AAAHH Real Monsters, and Angry Beavers. These shows also helped me rediscover CatDog after over a decade of not knowing it existed). After watching all the episodes I watched the live reading of Wacky Deli. Seeing all the voice actors do their thing and hearing how they got the job inspired me to become a voice actress. It hasn’t happened yet but that’s why I want to hopefully move to Burbank, California (I would prefer to work at Nickelodeon). Thanks Rocko, you really helped me figure out life.
uh oh
Doctor Adventure what?
Logan Cascio I assume he is referring to accounts of sexual harassment that happened at Nickelodeon in the past. But it is really something you shouldn’t worry about since 1. The company is likely to be much less tolerant and watchful of that sort of thing after it already happened and 2. These kind of things are usually over exaggerated since they often make controversial and thus news stories that drag in a lot of viewers.
Oh okay. Thanks. The main reason why I chose Nickelodeon is because Tom Kenny, Mr. Lawrence, and Carlos Alazraqui (my favorite voice actors and personal idols) do most of their work their.
All the best ^^
I wonder if Ralph Bighead was named after Ralph Bakshi, an animator who also pushed boundaries.
Oh yes, he mad bastard who made one of my FAVs, Wizards. A movie with some titties, violence, swearing, and plenty of Nazi imagery, which all somehow Rated PG. In other words: *_A FAAAAMILY PICTURE!_*
It was before the PG-13 rating.
Yeah, but still. Hilarious.
+Mace 2.0
Wizards one of my favorite adult animated movies along with Heavy Metal, Watership Down, Rock and Rule, Fire and Ice,Fantastic Planet, Lightyears aka Gandahar, Starchaser, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Golgo 13 The Professional, Cowboy Bebop The Movie, Princess Mononoke, Dark Knight Returns and more.
Drixenol86 Fritz the Cat is fuckin awesome
I think the reason gross out shows don't last long now, is that they only focus on the gross out. With Rocko you had good comedy first, and some of the jokes happened to be gross out ones. With a lot of shows now that do gross out it's all about the gross out, and no one really wants that as the main focus, for obvious reasons.
This. Shows like Rocko, Catdog, Rugrats, and others had gross out humor in them, but it wasn't the main focus of the show. A lot of the more modern attempts at that type of show seem to be made by people who don't understand that you need to have more than just gross out humor in your show to make it appealing, and that, most importantly, you should never gross your audience out more than the other characters in the show. Take a look at two different episodes of SpongeBob as an example, "Something Smells" and "The Splinter". In "Something Smells", the one recurring gag is that everyone is grossed out by how bad SpongeBob's breath is, but it never goes so far that it sickens the audience. In "The Splinter", the audience is treated to cringe-inducing stuff throughout while nobody else in the show has a reaction to it, leading to a lack of laughs.
You’re right. That’s the reason why shows like sanjay & craig and secret mountain fort awesome get a lot of hate for having excessive gross out humor even though shows that are still beloved to this day by plenty of people like ren & stimpy total drama island were just as guilty of with the amount of gross out humor
Well that was one of the things that made 90s cartoon special pretty much everything at the time had attitude to it and a lot of animators and writers were willing to take risk despite whatever controversy may have came their way that's what made 90's cartoons different compared to 80s cartoons most cartoons during the 80s were more about selling a product to children what's the 90s came around that would change there was more focus on character development and storytelling less on trying to sell a product
2:07 I love how you call him the Patrick of the series but his voice actor is spongebob squarepants

I just found out that the B-52s made the Rocko’s Modern Life theme song. As a Georgia native, I geeked out a little since they were from my state. It’s sad the the music that came out from the 70s to the 90s was one of the few good things to come from this place.
huh same
They also made the intro to pepper Ann

Watching this show as a kid was like getting high before i ever got high

THEY MUST VE BEEN ON DRUGS WHEN THEY MADE THIS ROFL LOL XD

THIS IS THE FBI OPEN UP
Ah, yes, the ultimate "How'd they get away with that?" show. I remember watching it as a really little kid (about 5 or so), then I watched it again at 12 and was shocked that they once showed a guy getting his arms ripped off. Then, as I grew into a teenager, I noticed more things.
I heard writers on Regular Show talk about how it was much more fun to write dirty jokes in a kid's show because it was a challenge to see what you could get away with. I see the writers for Rocko's Modern Life were masters of it.
Noticed that! the guy who made Regular Show grew up with this.
And what about Bojack Horseman?
I thought Ren and Stimpy was more of a "How'd they get away with that?" kind of show.
@@whoasked9500 Not to mention Animaniacs with stuff like that "No, no. Fingerprints" bit.
@@SirBlackReeds I love that joke lol
@@SirBlackReeds - POTTY EMERGENCY!! (lemonade joke)
Ooh so this is why you asked which episode of Gumball had the "blowjob" scene on Twitter.
I remember watching Rocko's Modern Life when I was like 6, and loving it. I never got the jokes but kid me just really liked the surreal stuff in the show. It wasn't until they announced the reboot that I rewatched it, almost 20 years since I last watched it, and realized how much stuff I missed or didn't get as a kid. I'm kind of shocked I was allowed to watch this show at all considering my parents didn't even let me watch Pokemon when I was a kid.
I can't wait for the reboot. This show is surprisingly relatable and the trailer for the reboot shows that these people know exactly what they're doing.
Same. I watched Rocko back when I was a kid about... I don't know... late 2000s? Considered that I never get the jokes either (e.g. the 8-ball meatball becomes a bride to Mr. Bighead, Rocko rescuing the bugs from being consumed by Mr. Bighead [again], etc.).
Wait so it wasn't for "research", but actually research!???
The more I hear about Chris Savino's "incident" the more uncomfortable I feel about the situation probably never look at The Loud House the same way again.
I can't WAIT for the new rocko special, it's shaping up to capture the original show so well like it never left, that's crazy to me
With that in mind, it makes Teen Titans ROAR! and Thundercats GO! look even worse.
Sad that it sucked and had a troon as the main goal, legit worst of the three reboot nick films
@@Porygonal64 reboot Nick films?
So did you like it?
Atleast we know what heffer did with his life at the end of camp lazlo
I never really look up what the creators of shows from my childhood did, usually because it ends up a little depressing, but it's so cool to find out that they made so much shit that I consumed. Working for/along them is a dream.

Are those meant for adults outside Rocko?
11:33 LOL! That's the most depressing Rocko costume I've seen in my entire life!
If you think that's bad, you should see the Rocko "cosplay set" that came in one of the early Nick Boxes. I wear the shirt a lot, but the other piece were socks that were poorly designed, meant to look like Rocko's shoes and legs I guess. They're hideous and I don't understand how you're meant to use them for cosplay since you need to wear, you know, shoes over them.
Actually, it's the only one probably lol
I'd call it pretty accurate.
It really can't be overstated how much anyone who watched this as a kid should watch it again now. Not for the "adult" jokes, no, but for the riffs on the mundane. I _just had_ my own "filling out hospital forms in pain" experience a few months ago when I passed a kidney stone. The "adult" stuff never got past me as a kid, so it's kinda whatever now. Stuff like the hospital forms, meeting your 20-something friend's weird family, and finding parking spaces at the mall is what makes this show.
R.I.P Chris Savino

I feel the gag with the tour guide was supposed to be that he's grown so tired of tourists requesting to see the Eiffel Tower, that hes grown a semi- irrational hate to the thing. To the point he seems to actively blank it out of memory unless prodded at.

I'm glad that despite the fact I was born in the early 2000s, I was able to appreciate this show through late night reruns before cable started to die out. I remember particularly liking Rocket Power a lot, but I think Rocko was a close 2nd and now my favorite of the nicktoons block that would lay past Nick@Nite, but before the next broadcasting day started

About the german DVDs - yes, they are uncut and include the original english audiotrack as well. Turbine Medien, the Company who released the Set, went to great lengths to get the unedited Versions of almost all episodes. The only episode that's still censored is "Road Rage" which is missing the No Tell Motel Scene (about 25 seconds).
Hmm. I should buy it.

16:11 I do like the trope of the medical professional who works in like 3 to 5 different fields. Doctor Barber from Flapjack and that Spanish doctor guy from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish come to mind.
Dr.Nick from the Simpsons is the best example for this

"Dad, can we use your tools?"

Idk why, but I found that so funny
The latinamerican dub of the show didn't censor pretty much anything, even words like hell were pronounce (classic rule of the narrator reading titles because we didn't have the budget to edit) and even the banned episode with mrs Bighead seducing Rocko was aired without a problem, not to mention the voice actors were really good
*clap*

That Snagglepuss reboot was so succesful the best image Pan could find was a Dutch VHS cover.
I liked how 90s the colors were
HAHA. Spanish drama about a late library book. So real to the genre.
I love this channel because it always reminds me of summer nights from my childhood where i stayed up till 2 in the morning watching cartoons and reruns. Plus your voice is fucking SOOTHING
This show was the best thing growing up. Thanks so much for touching on this gem.
I fucking lost it at Dr. Hutchison unwrapping Mrs. Bighead's bandages by tying them to the TV and throwing it out the window. XD
take this however you will but.
I've been thinking about the episode in which heffer hosts a nudist party ever since I saw it on tv.
I don't actually have any opinions on the matter, nor has it influenced the way I think.
Its just something that has followed me since.
Personally, I remember nothing else about Rocko besides that episode; a plot like that just kinda sticks out, I guess.
Not Applicable Haha yeah that's been my exact experience with it as well
I feel that way since I saw the episode where Mrs. Bighead tried to flirt with Rocko. The only way Rocko has influenced my life is that I named my dog Sponky when I was 5.
I love the thoughtful censor in that episode. It's like there's a brief moment when the censor thinks "Do I need to do this?"

Oh good, you arrived
Justin Y. ( -_-)
And you found a way to fit in to all these comment sections.
Oh, hey there Justin. Glad you could make it!
Time Lizard it's not fucking 2015 anymore
I'm actually shocked that this is getting a revival, at least in a TV movie form. I would have assumed you could not make cartoons like this anymore.
Humor-wise, Gravity Falls did a lot of the same things Rocko did, so I'm not shocked. Plus Nickelodeon has been heavily banking on their older cartoons for a while now and Rocko has been a pretty big part of that.
What about Regular Show?
Mathmachine Boy The Amazing World of Gumball, Regular Show, Gravity Falls, hell even some scenes from Star vs got away with some questionable scenes
Sure you can. You just have to market it towards adults.
Its a special not a movie
The funniest part of that Nintendo commercial is that they had to censor the word "hell"
I loved the Baseball episode when Rocko wanted to catch a Foul Ball, they were sitting up on the stadium's light tower.
And the Cinema episode that was on straight after that with all of those funny movie trailers, funniest one was Dracula: Done To Death movie trailer that implies that the theme of Dracula in Vampire movies has been done so many times that the horror genre needs new ideas. Then came Twilight a decade later.
There was also the garage sale where a G I Joe toy that was melted in a Microwave could be worth a fortune regardless of how messed up it had become.
There were so many good episodes that I think the best ones were within its first few seasons.
Also Spongebob didn't follow the 52 episode rule, it completely smashed it. But I still believe that Rocko's Modern Life was better for it being a 4 season series so therefore it didn't become stale or the creators eventually ran out of ideas such as what happened to Rugrats and Spongebob series.
I was glad my mom wanted me to watch this show as a kid, thanks to that show it shapped my sense of humor even today and toughed me it's okay to still even laugh when things get hard in life
22 years later and this show is inspiring me to try animation. That's why this show is #1-5 on my top 5 favoite cartoons.
"Remember, Be Hot, Be Naughty, Be Courteous" lmao!
Joe Murray sounds like a very deep-voiced Jim
Awesome episode, and I loved that old school adult swim bumper with the old man swimming. I definitely remember seeing that in my early childhood. I didn't understand what adult swim was, but the content was always entertaining.

I don't know why but when I was a kid this show scared the hell outta me
TurdMan McQuack I cant say I blame you. There was an episode where Heffer chocked and went straight to the child friendly version of hell. This show had some pretty fucked up stuff tbh
I hate the way networks have regressed in how they decided to make cartoons. They went from "let's make something fresh and interesting that anyone can enjoy", to "how can we pander to children and sell as many toys as possible?"
When i was young i loved the intro so much
I remember watching this afterschool and on Nick in the Afternoon in the summer; good times. Fuck, I miss the 90s.
Wasnt that magic meatball referenced in iCarly?
There was a magic meatball in an episode of iCarly. It was the episode that told Spencer want to do when he bought a llama I think? Not sure if it was a reference to Rocko in particular but hey.
It might've been actually since Icarly likes to make some references to nickelodeon stuff
Carly could make anyone's meatball feel like magic.
I thought they stole that idea
HellRay
Especially Dan Schneider
The magic meatball thing is also in icarly where Spencer doesn't do anything without the meatball saying so
The German amazon listing for the DVDs says “Rockos modern life- the complete series (includes in the box 3D cover card, stickers, postcards, poster and DVD extras.) [limited edition]
The DVD costs about $82.
I think that every episode of Rocko’s Modern Life that mentioned the word “Ferb” or had one of the characters named “Ferb” in it were episodes that Jeff “Swampy” Marsh and Dan Povermire worked on like Hefer’s imaginary friend, Ferb, from the last episode “Floudering Fathers” which would explain why they named one of their main characters Ferb from Phineas and Ferb. Also the episode, “Fish-N-Chumps”, that Stephen Hillenberg worked on had a lot of things that carried over into creating Spongebob Squarepants like the pineapple on Crappy Jack’s shoulder instead of a parrot.
Dan Povenmire and Jeff Swampy Marsh also worked on this
Yes, that's why he mentioned Phineas and Ferb at the beginning of the video.
The retrospective on how 90s animation came to be was super interesting and well written, great review/episode as always, Pan!
I'm so excited there's a new Pan video that I might Snork.
This was always one of my favorite shows growing up! And yeah adults really didn't want kids watching it back then. My mom used to tell me about how other parents would talk to her and say things like "Why do you let your kids watch that stuff?" and she'd respond, " They're kids! They'll laugh at the funny things and the adult jokes go right over their heads. They'll get it later on looking back." Which was absolutely right, and if you ask me that's what makes looking back so much fun as an adult!
I hope you cover "The Ripping Friends" one day, i can barley find anything about them. and i really liked that sow when i was young. oh and dont for get "defenders of dynatron city" i cant wait!!
I just want to point out how much I appreciate the B-52s soundtrack for your video 10/10
