      Just discovered your channel and I'm not disappointed. I started home brewing back in college and loved every minute of it. Unfortunately during some of my stations in the military I wasn't able to brew for a very long time but I recently got back into it back in 2020 during covid and recently I discovered your channel. And it's really helped me kind of develop. Now I wanna try some things and I know there are people out there who enjoye it as well. I live in Washington and while there are some cool little microbreweries. No one really does the home brew thing in there 30's. Keep it up and I'll watch it all. Also i'm gonna transition away from glass carboys and go to plastic.

    Funnily enough I was a subscriber of his and wanted to get into homebrewing, but this video flipped my perception of his whole channel and how much effort I would need to put into homebrewing. I felt annoyed that he misrepresented what homebrewing should be, unsubscribed from him and then started following better channels like your’s, Clawhammer Supply and Bru Show. While I am still extract brewing, I love what the RUclips community of real home brewers do and it makes me want to improve my beginner craft and get into all grain beers.
    Thanks for confirming my thoughts, stay awesome!

    I had always wanted to try brewing and it was actually Josh's video that got me deciding to put more effort into it and from there I started looking up brewing videos on RUclips as I had a beer kit that had been collecting dust for awhile (glass carboy and all). At the start of this year after educating myself a little I finally decided to brew that all grain kit up and 7 months later I have now done 15 different batches. Admittedly I have to give some credit to Josh for me getting into this hobby as it was that video that made me want to explore more.

    My impression of JW's video was that it seemed like he brewed that beer only once - for a video. But he's recommending it as if its a beer he brews and drinks regularly (even though he doesn't like beer that much).
    I picked up homebrewing in the past few months, and my search of "how to homebrew beer" first led me to the Homebrew Challenge. I never saw JW's video until now. From Martin's channel, I ended up finding the BruSho and H4L. I've learned a lot in a short amount of time from you guys. Really appreciate the hard work!

    Bro I’m kinda mad. Not about Josh (I enjoyed this and claw hammers video as well 😂) but about this channel. I started brewing in about 2017. And no Josh didn’t influence me even though I did watch his video. I Started making one gallon batches like a total tool bag and made my way to 5 gallons after learning how stupid I was. But I never saw any of your videos until recently. And I watched a lot of home brew videos. I put down brewing for a year and half after moving out of state. I picked it up again and decided to keg and found your video on kegs. And dude I subscribed immediately. I think this is my favorite brew channel. I love you content. It hilarious and I Learn stuff. When I started homebrewing last year, I worked as a server for brewing and learned some very basic terms serving beer. Unfortunately for me I fell right into the trap of watching Josh's video of how to brew beer. And yes, I did use this recipe and used the glass fermenter. After successfully pulling off the stunt, I showed it to the owners of the brewery I worked at and told them the process I took to brew the beer. They gave me pointers on how to better my craft and better my efficiency with different yeast strands and mash complexity. They kind of drove me away from the very simple malt extract brews. Luckily I found yall's channel: HOMEBREW 4 LIFE, and I turned what was a crazy idea with a group of friends into a passion. I used to watch and re-watch CH's videos on a daily basis and recently pulled off my first kettle sour even. I've followed CH's recopies and followed his semi-logical wisdom mixed along with the help of the owners of the brewery I worked at to turn this craft into a passion. I am now enrolled in business school and I am also taking classes to improve my homebrewing skills to potentially open a brewery one day.
    Btw, my first beer I brewed off CH's channel was the cinnamon toast crunch stout and the stopper I used on my bucket had a crack and the vodka I put into the stopper leaked both into the beer and out of the stopper onto the floor. That was when I learned that beer can turn into basically a soy sauce beer. Now, I check every stopper I own for leaks or I pressure ferment in kegs with a pressure valve.

    I agree nearly 100%. I'd not recommend Lallemand Voss Kveik for a first brew, because I know a few people (including me) who don't like the taste it creates. Not talking about kveik in general (lutra is fine) and I know it is summer, but the Voss Kveik can just be off putting and a new brewer might think it's his/her fault. If in any way possible (cellar, any single colder room), I'd recommend S-05. It's just the workhorse and can handle nearly everything (in my opinion), without adding too much flavor. But that's just me. I use the Voss Kveik if I absolutely have to get a bee ready in under a week.

    Josh does know how to make bread, and I get some ideas about food. Haven’t seen this video, but guessing it’s like Alton Brown’s Good Eats episode. I was floored for a guy that is known for science of food got some basic terms wrong. I’m getting back to brewing (so yes, still using my glass carboys: got a new chest freezer for fermenting). Brewfather is worth the hype I’m finding. One thing I do like about brewing is that you seem to make new friends wanting to try your beers (so opposite his claim that only brewers like their beers).

    I tried a Cooper's homebrew kit years ago and produced complete garbage, so I threw everything away. I then stumbled across a video by Pro Home Cooks where he does a mango all grain beer, and decided to try again. That video was the Ultime C**k tease though cos he didn't give out a solid recipe that I could follow.

    Hey CH!
    You got me back into homebrewing. One of my favourite things about your channel is that you are always up for challenging the status quo and the "traditional wisdom" of brewing. I've got one for you that I would love to see your take on:
    Does heating your sparge water actually matter? I've started sparging with cold water, and while it takes a bit longer to get to boil temp after, it simplifies my process considerably and doesn't make a difference to the beer. No need for an entire extra vessel is nice for saving $$$ too.

    • @somebeersomedude8795
      @somebeersomedude8795 2 года назад

      the amount of heat that the grain cake has will likely overcome the temp of your water, but that being said, you should do the exact same recipe with hot and cold sparge water. See what happens efficiency-wise.

    • @HOMEBREW4LIFE
      @HOMEBREW4LIFE  2 года назад +1

      170 sparge!

    • @dsr0116
      @dsr0116 2 года назад

      Traditional wisdom is that you sparge with 168 water to stop enzymes from continuing to convert. Perhaps it’s minimal after a 60 min mash, but then again, it could have a difference in character/efficiency. I’ve been doing fly sparging…but know that batch sparging is pretty popular (and doesn’t require a seperate vessel).

    • @chrisz8532
      @chrisz8532 2 года назад

      @@dsr0116 yeah but didn’t taking the temperature up to 76c for ‘mash out’ already stop enzyme conversion?🤔

    • @dsr0116
      @dsr0116 2 года назад

      @@chrisz8532 Heating to 168F/76C is the traditional method for sparge water. OP seems to be asking about not heating sparge water (so you are missing that step of "traditional" mash out stoping enzyme conversion). Would think beer might turn out slightly thiner without mash out temp.

    Haven't read all the comments so forgive me if this has been slammed already. Just the phrase "I really don't like beer" turned me off immediately. Why TF did he make the video then? Every homebrewer I know (and after 6 years in, and a few competitions, I know a lot of them) started making beer because they love it. And I agree with your statement that (whatever percentage you said) of first time homebrewers quit after their first batch; so many starter kits on craigslist, offerup, FB marketplace. Rant over. Love your videos, they make me laugh, and I gotta say the best advice I've gotten in the last few months is the dry hop with sous vide magnets thing; tried it twice so far and my last Pale is THE best beer I've ever made, using that method (along with a pressure lid for my fermonster). Keep it going braj. Sincerely, a female Braj (brajette?) way out here in Washington State.

    I’ve been brewing for 48 years. I noticed, at 15 years of age, that I couldn’t buy beer…but I could buy Blue Ribbon Malt and Fleischmann yeast! The beer was horrible! But, it was better than what Uncle JP and my dad made…so I persevered and got much better. I have lineups for my beer - and I’m first in line! Honestly, if my Uncle and Dads beer didn’t turn me off of the hobby, there’s no way Jonathan Weissman could either. I did think it odd that a cooking guy wanted to pretend to know how to make beer. Who remembers Alton Brown doing a show on Homebrew? I didn’t brew that recipe, either. Lol!

    On point video. I used to follow this clown pre-pandemic, before he got big. I 100% saw this video when I started brewing, also saw your how to carbonate a keg video.
    All I can say is I’m here typing this comment, and not watching the other guys junk content. Keep being you, and this channel will pop. Honestly surprised it hasn’t yet.

    I watched JW's vid when I first was interested in brewing, I never made it but it got me to keep looking for more content, where I found TheApartmentBrewer, and then you guys. Now that I know more and have done some real brews, I know what's wrong with it. But I totally agree on the idea that it's the wrong idea to give newbies that a complex, weird beer is the start

    I think if all home brewer channels are honest with themselves, they have to appreciate the fact that Josh is utilizing his large platform to help an otherwise non suspecting group of new home brewers. Even if only 5% or less make it. That’s a lot out of the amount of views he had for his HB video.
    You all need to ride the wave Josh is making for you!

    Hate the game, not the player. (I know theres no hate here, just a fitting expression) I subscribe to both these channels) I love cooking and home brewing. Some good points made here, I think Josh was just showing that anyone can try making beer. And yes, glass carboys are synonymous with using metal on teflon.

    The shade for saison! I dunno man, my first solo homebrew was a 1g saison from an extract kit with some specialty grains, and it was great. It wasn’t some whacky fruit infused, bubble gum mess. It was dry and punchy, more like an IPA than a bock. But then again, I already knew what to expect because craft beer led me to home brewing. All I’m saying is, you’re right about Cheese, but maybe you haven’t had a good saison…?

    Although I agree with the bad about Joshua’s video (carboy as fermenter, choosing saison, etc) I think overall his video has a positive impact. Like you said there is no way homebrewing channels will get 2.8M views, so even if only 1% of the people that watched his video got into the hobby and stayed brewing, that is still 28000 people, more than the average views in videos of my favorite homebrew channels. So even if it is a homebrew video in a cooking channel done by a non-brewer, I consider it a win for the homebrew community.

    Ya know… I’m not a huge fan of a lot of beer styles and I’ll openly admit that, I like what I like and that’s just a fact of life…
    That said I did watch the video your talking about and shook my head a bit, I’m new to this home brewing game and being a bit A.D.D I soak up info like a sponge and in the last month I’ve binge watched you, claw hammer, the home brew challenge, party time brewing, the apartment brewer, Dr Hans and probably a dozen more guys to get my head around the hobby.
    I went from doing extract blonde ale in a wine fermenter in the spring to just last week kegging a partial extract porter in my new to me kegerator from a Fermzilla while waiting for a Grainfather to show up in the mail so I can move into all grain juicy IPA’s…
    You guys (all you RUclipsrs who have dedicated beer channels) are an inspiration to folks like me and the knowledge you share is fukkin priceless and appreciated!
    I do outdoor videos now and then and in this corner of RUclips it’s quite common for big channels to rip content from little guys and do a hack job of it while acting like they are old pros just to up the views… we call em out on it alllll the time…. Anyway… go brew something!!!
    Thanks eh!

      I wouldn't call that A.D.D. P.O. it's more autodidactic and requires way more discipline! It's how you brew a meh first brew and decide to learn why and how to improve that puts you in the 5% of folks that just keep at it instead of giving up on the idea.

    LOL Mechanic 4 life! I don't know who the guy you are referencing is. The clips of him in your video most likely demonstrate why. "I don't really like beer that much" should be right at the beginning of his video, so the viewer knows he has little to offer someone who likes beer. Poser is the perfect descriptor. His cult following appears to be for his personality, which says a lot about his audience. Very funny CH. Cheers.
