    What I missed is combining bus stations with train stations or airports, transferring travellers and mail from the city centers to the train stations and airports that are more at the side of the city, to fill up those big trains!
    Or you can sort of cheat by Ctrl-clicking and building a simple bus station in the center of a city, making it part of your train station to enlarge your catchment area and attract an enormous amount of travellers..

    I never knew the buildings in the capture area determined the passenger productivity. I just thought a city as a whole produced the passengers and that's that, all stations having the same productivity. This insight really helped.

    • @MasterHellish
      @MasterHellish  3 года назад +7

      Oh no this is very important we place in stations to get as much of the buildings in as possible and not just as many as the buildings to get the bigger buildings the bigger buildings provide more passengers than the smaller buildings

      @FHBStudio 3 года назад +2

      @@MasterHellish Thanks for all the tutorials. Been bingeing them for a bit. I thought towns and cities worked the same as any industry in that regard, but it's more like every individual building is a single "passenger and mail" industry.
      One way I've tried optimizing my bus routes is by placing two (or more) bus stops side by side, then four of those stations across town with one direction roads leading in and out of them. I assign four or more busses a shared order and desynchronize them. Lastly, I add one more bus on a separate schedule which loads until full.
      Not sure if that's optimal but it's been highly effective and much better than what I had before. More throughput, less delay/waiting on broken down busses and high ratings.

    So I started playing this game in 1996 on my 486 VGA laptop as a teenager. It was my go to game and after a few years I came back to this game, played it for a while and then moved onto another one. By watching your videos I realized there are way more options I never used in all that hours of gameplay in past years. Thanks so much for bringing those insights in the tutorials. Diving into OpenTTD again with more knowledge and looking forward making cool and smooth train connections, which is for me the most fun part of OpenTTD. Thanks! 🎉

    I too am just starting out on TTD. Saw your victory over on Spiffing Brit's channel, but I was already beginning your tutorial series before I watched that. For my first game though, I picked up the Early Vehicles mod and the Sailing Ship mods and have started in the year 1700! Ha! Slow going for sure, but the sailing ships can do some nice passenger and mail transport in the beginning.
    Now, I figured out how to get the subsidies going and I had an opportunity for some coal shipping up to a power plant not too far away. Tried getting the canals and docks all set up but my first ship was just a couple days late to win the subsidy! Ahhh! But, I took it as a challenge and reloaded the save game file from just before I needed to setup the infrastructure for this route. After a couple more tries (and lots of pressing the 'pause game' button in-between actions) I DID IT! So much fun ≽ܫ≼

    4:00 if your local authority rating is at its worst, you should remove all trees and flatten all the land you want. What are they going to do about it, hate you more? I don't think so! Then, after you've done that, open up the local authority menu and plant trees just enough to satisfy them. The rating updates live as you watch it after planting trees.

    Thanks for the solid tutorials Master Hellish. I have a question pertaining to the graph(7:40) that shows value of goods (10 units) per 20 squares traveled, as a function of time. Do we know when the clock starts? Is it counting the time I have a truck waiting for a full load in the depot, or does it start when the truck departs and actually starts its travel?

    I like to connect all the tiny towns that are close together and run a single mail truck and bus from the biggest town to each other town in a cluster. It's not a lot of money but, early game, it gives you a small trickle as you're putting together your first rail lines. It also helps get your overall population snowballing

    • @MasterHellish
      @MasterHellish  Год назад +3

      That is one way of doing it. I would say most situations you would probably find that one good railway line would outperform any bus service you could make for the same money. Thought I could be wrong there. How often like popping bus stations in the towns to help with the town growth definitely helps for later in the game when you've got some lovely fat towns to work with

    Is distance counted as factory to factory or station to station? Does passangers always all load out in next station or they have specific place where they r traveling? If station affect more houses does it mean more passangers or everything I need is attach it to city? If some station used to load out passangers a lot does it mean it will also generate more passangers?

    While this is a good explanation, I think there is a big point missed out in the video and only after reading a Wiki I realized that and my profits skyrocketed. You DO WANT to carry most of the stuff (especially coal) to a very long distance if you are going for the biggest profit. Note that you get the price-cut depending on the time per square - essentially taking into account train speed for the most part (and how twisted your tracks are). But you are still paid for the distance traveled, which means you want to travel further. In fact (and this is written in the Wiki), IT IS EASIER TO MAKE YOUR LINE TOO SHORT THAN TOO LONG in terms of profit. On a 256x256 map, I start my games by picking coal mine and power station on the opposite ends of the map and that is the first thing I build. That usually gets me 100k+ a year from 4-5 trains instantly (assuming you picked a good coal mine) and close to 900k+ a year after about 10-15 years of good service.

    So I am new to this game and In my towns i have quite a lot of traffic and back ups. Perhaps you can make a vid on how to best manage road vehicles in the towns to keep the things moving. Or perhaps a vid on how to get (passengers) ratings up in towns. I have a problem where I have over 1,000 passengers waiting at bus stops but if i build more buses you get back ups on the roads. So maybe a bonus vid on how to deal with "problems" like that.

    Greets. I just stumbled upon this great tutorial series and you might be able to help me with what is boggin me for time. I understand, that at early game it is only viable to trasnport, for example coal, to a nearby plant, due to slow train speed. Does that mean that later with monorails it is more profitable to trasnport the cargo the another more distant power plant? So, if I have a coal mind and a plant in one side of the map and another coal mine and a plant in the other, should I cross trasnport the coal the other side of the map instead of aiming the nearest plant?
    Also is there an easy way to find out what distance is viable for a given train speed and route?

    • @MasterHellish
      @MasterHellish  10 лет назад

      bagalas87 There is no easy way to know for sure the optimum distance. You can use the cargo payment graph to help you make a decision. As a general rule you want to go as far as you can as quick as you can. You are correct in the early game the sower trains means that you should not go vary far for best profit.

    • @DanHaiduc
      @DanHaiduc 3 года назад +1

      7 years later, here is a reply: the OpenTTD Wiki says you can use waypoints for routing trains to a specific track. For example, when you have lots of trains taking goods from a factory, you don't want them to clog up the station so that raw materials can't get to the factory, so you direct them to only one specific track in the station, leaving the others free.

    Thanks for the video. I mostly play like you suggest. Probably the only difference that I do not buy so much buses/trucks (my mistake will try this in my next game). However, i am very frustrated when I play against AI (Open TTD has a lot of AI that can be downloaded inside the game). I usually put AI to start like 5-6 months after me. Anyway AI get tons and tons of profit for let's say 3 months, witch just some 2 or 3 transport roads (usually one truck and one train) . I check his income , and does not make sense. AI and me have almost (+- 3-4 vehicles) and his profit is crazy and I always go on minus at the end of the year. I try lots of different AI scripts, they are all they same. I think this is cheating and is very frustrating. Playing the game alone is not so fun because I like competition in strategic and economical games. If someone have advice for balanced and not overpowered AI let me know what is the name of the script. Thanks in advance.

      +XOneGameR Im currently playing a game with 12 AI and made them start with me (first AI set to start 9 months after me) so that we can start with same level. Since its AI and well programmed too, they do make good amount of money and I on the other hand make less than them, but in the long run, I do surpass them easily. What i wanna say is, you definitely will stay lower than most AI (except you are expert), but in the long run, you will make money if you do correct decisions of where to build, how much to build and what to build.
      Btw, playing on medium settings for all AI and the AI are mix of all, some stick to road vehicles, some do trains and only aircrafts and some do all. I think, its just a matter of how you build your transportation and move ahead with time.

    • @mikethk
      @mikethk 10 лет назад

      You are playing with inflation. It makes it harder. This guy is prop.... not doing that.
      It Means that you have to make longer routes, find new ways to earn Money etc. etc.
      How further a bus/car/train is travveling the profit go up.
      Because everything increase in Price you have to think about getting the newer better busses that are available. Thse busses are faster and can reach further. Also it is possible to travel between cities.
      Just like real life. 4 old busses can be changed with 1 new faster more reliable bus. And you have to think about that.
      Remmember that you will only Loose the money that you Loose on your equipment. This Means that you can remove ALL your busses and make 1 bus route which then will make you earn money.
      SO. Dont be scared about removing/renewing/changing your infrastructure, because it is actually needed. Mostly with inflation.

    • @mikethk
      @mikethk 10 лет назад

      Same goes with everything else. . . 5 trains can suddenly be changed with 2 WAY faster more reliable trains for the same coal factory. . . . The faster trains can also reach further, before loosing money on slow delivery (as shown on the graph he shows above).
      You cant "save" money, but you can curtainly increase effectiviness. And this is important when playing with inflation. Which is the most fun and competitive thing to do.
      As in real life, you will have to optimize your infrastructure ALL the time.
