    I’m wondering what the differences in experience and decision making are between yourself and other cavers that died taking excessive risk , one horrific and well known case in Utah . How do you know where to draw the line between life and death decisions ?

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  2 года назад +18

      I'm not sure. I think it's a very valid question. Every person has to evaluate risk for themselves. It's certainly appropriate to go with other cavers and learn. I didn't do any difficult caving until I had done it with other more experienced cavers. It takes time to learn what is dangerous and what is OK and what your personal limits are.
      The young man who died in Utah had never done that. He was taking big risks which were extremely uncalculated in my opinion. And obviously he didn't know his own limits and surpassed them quite quickly. But there was also some misfortune that he didn't deserve. And that being said, it's very rare to run into that kind of terrible trouble.

      I'd say, and I think I've heard you say this, "if you don't feel comfortable about doing it, don't." Especially if it's a vertical drop that's very tight or that you can't see the bottom of. There must be countless variations of situations you could find yourself in, as countless as all the veins, arteries and tunnels the Earth holds within it, but I believe if you stick to a sound set of rules and safety procedures you can get through most of them safely. Know your own limitations and skills. Realize every cave system is different and has it's own unique problem set. Maybe most importantly, read and watch what experienced cavers do and have done in the past and what equipment they use. Never cave alone. Blah blah blah. I sound like I've done a lot of caving. NOT!!! Watched a lot. A few guided tours. A few shallow caves in Midwest Texas and when I was in my teens, several large city sewer systems, which by the way also have stalactites and flowstones. They were Gipson I believe. Its common in the ground water where I live. Maybe calcite? 🤪

      I think the reality is that caving is dangerous, and there will always be accidents and tragedies. And hindsight will always make it seem like poor decision making. At the end of the day everyone is responsible for themselves, and their own safety.

    Do you ever bring any little personal effects, I don't know, like maybe poker chips with your name on them, and leave them at the furthest places and tightest places you have made it to? Kind of like a marker or a guestbook type of thing? Lol

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  2 года назад

      Occasionally. Jacob likes to but we do so much caving we rarely have time like that period and in any case we consider our videos our mark.
      If we make it further back than anyone ever has we almost always leave a stack of rocks. That way if anyone ever finds their way back there, they will sadly find out they were not first.

    Are ropes that people leave generally solid after they've been there a long time?

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  2 года назад +1

      They are OK. There are so many of them and most of them are good for balance you don't have to put all your weight on them.
      But it's a hot mess of different kinds of rope. Some are are solid and some are not. Some are dynamic and some are static. I swear you could grab a gob of like 6 in your hand at one time and they are not going to break.
      If you are a decent climber... you do not need to bring any gear in that cave. You can get all the way through.

    Hey guys, it's me again, I was wondering how close are you to being able to monetize this channel? Don't you need a certain amount of watch hours?

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  2 года назад +1

      Thank you we were able to monetize a few days ago! And the first thing we did was remove the ads which RUclips puts at the beginning of some of the videos.
      A channel has to have 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch time hours.
      The subs were easy, but without any viral videos over here it's a lot of watch hours. Compared to our main page which gets over 50,000 hours per month.

    You guys are the real deal. Thanks for such an authentic content.
    Got one question:
    My biggest dream is to slide though cave like this.
    How are you coping with it (tight spaces) ? Did you learn or did you never, in life, had problem with it ?

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  2 года назад

      It's a one step at a time game for most people including us.
      We didn't just immediately go squeezing through insanely tight passages. We would crawl through certain ones and avoid others. It took time to build-up tolerance to various types of spaces. It's also much easier to take risks when you are with other adults who could in theory simply pull you out of a sticky situation.
      For the record, hell hole is not an extraordinarily difficult cave. Which is part of what makes it fun.

    • @jcee2259

      My first dark tight place was a birth canal.
      and I wasn't screaming until the buttock
      got slapped. I've since traversed dozens
      of constricted canals transporting surface
      water to the water table. Swallow any ?

      In the cave? This cave is fairly public so it gets a tremendous amount of human traffic. Almost all the marks in the cave are spray paint. I think someone sprayed green arrows to help navigate. I'm not certain that's what you are referring to but I'm trying to remember.

      My niece was 13 in this video. She needed help in spots. There's some climbing which is more difficult on the way up but there are lots of ropes so if someone's a good climber it's no problem. There are places you'd want to be careful depending on your level of risk aversion.
      It's slippery in the winter or when it's wet. But it's relatively small and a comfortable temperature.

    do girls have an advantage with caving by having smoother rounder body shapes?

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  Год назад

      I'd say they make great cavers because sometimes their body size is generally smaller.
      And I don't think this is always true but in my experience the females I have caved with seem to have less inherent fear. London has just never cared about any problems a cave might present. Although she doesn't seem extremely excited about spiders.

      Girls are often smaller in frame then males and have an easier time. Everybody got parts that can get squished. Just depends on the shape of the passage.
