Who's excited for Car Trek 5?
Can’t wait! Love watching Car Trek!!!! Keep up the great work guys.
Woot woot!
Me!
Can't wait. Awesome to see how y'alls dynamic has improved since the start of the show.
the trailer for it is so good!
It's videos like these which make me glad I live in a state like Arizona where I could register a washing machine for highway use and it might take an afternoon.
I hear that brother! I'm in IL, but I moved out to the country to a county with no emissions testing... It's magnificent to see all the cars that would never pass ANY kind of inspection anywhere. In fact, the town i live in will certify a golf cart for road use.
Yep Arizona is the best state in the country
Same in Indiana. No inspections, no worries.
You heard it here first, Wes just leaked his next video idea
Nah, inspections are needed. Way too many cars on the road that shouldn't be.
You need to change the seat foam and seat sensor. Water damage affects the foam, which causes the OCS to set an undetermined classification which the Airbag control modules doesn't like ant it will set an AWL. That's why you get the intermittent light.
My only question is are you a Ferrari tech or do you own lots because HOW THE HELL WOULD YOU KNOW THAT? Pretty awesome
@@bennyjetsaroundtheworld9047 might just be a generic issue not specific to Ferrari
@@superstriker4123 it’s typically generic, the passenger seat foam degraded in my Chevy truck and started setting of my airbag light. Ended up needing to get an entirely new seat bottom.
Engineer. But is a generic issue on the restraint system. Particular to the "newer" vehicles that have that seat sensor.
I’m no Ferrari mechanic but based on the photos from Ed, this application does not use a typical sear cushion sensor. Ed described sensors between the seat floor and the seat. An overly complicated engineering solution but, I’m no Ferrari mechanic.
"I need a VERY durable condom and a lot of zip ties".
Not the kind of movie I was expecting apparently.
Same with he's coming around my inside
You sure do got a purty Lambo, boy-uh!
Have you joined the mile high club?
Ed Bolian can make even a boring state inspection sound exciting.
Exciting is a stretch.
That Car Trek trailer looks like it’s going to be the best one yet
It’s like old topgear
“Today does not suck” I want that kind of realization in my life
Join the Army. Your day WILL suck but you will learn the art of convincing yourself it doesn't.
Don't cry about it. Get busy living or get busy dying. If your days suck it's by your own doing. Change it.
The only way Ed is gonna be able to afford a private jet is if it has the same ownership history as Malaysian Air Flight 103
They’re gonna find malaysia airlines flight 370 and ed’s gonna release a video about how he bought it
Have you checked the wiring going from under the seat? In the pics it looks like that wiring was under water and the resistance of the wiring could have changed with corrosion. Since the weight sensors have been replaced I would replace the harness from under the seat to the module and I bet your issue clears up. The other option is placing a resistor in line with the sensor and tricking the car into thinking there is always a passenger.
Yup replace it with resistor or take the airbag light out from dash as inspectors do not scan the car….
@@asimabid4732 did you not hear ed say they test that you didn't disable the light.
@@asimabid4732 14:55
@@asimabid4732 the airbag light has to light up for a second after turning the ignition on. if the bulb is removed, the light doesn't light up and therefore you fail the inspection.
I feel like you could make this happen with an arduino or something
The mclaren f1 segment will be the most watched cartrek episode guaranteed.
CarTrek 25: This time we investigate how unreliable are the most famous hypercars from the 90s, Ed finally bought that El Chapo's McLaren F1, Freddy bought the salvage Jaguar XJ220 and Tyler bought the cheapest Ferrari Enzo in the US.
The production and content quality for Car Trek looks awesome.
Thanks! We are doing our best to push to envelope.
It's like a shiny turd though. It's so predictable. It has the potential and financial backing to be a way better show. A lot of you seem to like it the way it is though, and that's cool.
I've been using the Ed technique for years. My favorite is a late model, but high mile vehicle. Just bought a 2009 CVO Electra glide, HD. Adjusted for inflation, this was a $45000 motorcycle. Got it with delivery included for $10700. The catch? It's got 100000 miles. Good. All highway miles and it runs perfectly. Wont depreciate either.
that Car Trek trailer KILLED it. can't wait. "I need an oversized condom and some zip ties."
still love the 599. she's a keeper.
Last time I was this early Ed was averaging triple digits in a heavily depreciated AMG! 😂
Shrewdly negotiated down to a steal, I'm sure!
Car trek out here looking way better (both content and production quality wise) then 99% of Netflix 😂 Can't wait!
I don't think Tyler has the strength to force that key into a neck lmao
I can say the people at auto tempest who look after their Instagram page are fantastic extreamly helpful and super friendly, even though I'm over the pond they sill helped with my question then with general interactions on the Instagram platform. For what it's worth I will happily keep interacting even though I unfortunately can't use their services where I live. So a fantastic sponsor for a series that in my opinion is equally if not a little better than the uk top gear specials, way better than the grand tour and this series wipes its feet on American top gear, genuine friends all sharing their toys and having a fantastic time, I am hooked and follow all the guys on their personal RUclips channels I would encourage all who care to read this to do the same they are brilliant fun and even educational
Sounds like you need the patented NPR Car Talk black tape to put over the airbag light
No..
. You already heard him say the correct way to bypass this.
You swap the lights in the back from traction control or some other stupid light that is unique to that car with the airbag light
Then it comes on and goes off correctly.
The only difference is, Ed can only do that with bolts.
What you really need to do is cut the trace on the board for the light, scrape off the coating and solder wires to jumper across... No big deal if you work with any kind of electronics
Ed described how they'd turn the car off and back on and make sure all the lights come on when the car's first started, which is how they caught the guy who'd disconnected his light - you do the black tape and you fail the inspection.
I had the pleasure of riding in this car on the way to lunch with Ed one day and I feel cooler for simply being in it. It’s a beautiful car that makes fantastic sounds when Ed drives it the way it was intended. Thanks Ed!
Christopher, I would argue that the car is cooler simply from you being in it.
Dude. I can't even imagine the stories being told between you two over the course of that day!
Make some videos on your channel Christopher Michael
But the real question is, Have you convinced @Ed Bolian to invest in a Full Dress Harley-Davidson Street Glide or Electra Glide❓
Hey Christopher, I see on the "about" tab of your youtube profile that you will soon be uploading videos featuring non car stories and videos featuring your artwork. When can we expect this to happen? You'd be surprised how many of us would watch.
Nice!
I needed some vinwiki after a 16hr shift
Btw: I have actually wired a 555 timer circuit to an error light so that it doesn't illuminate after 20 seconds. When connected to a code reader the fault it still there, but no light! One of the many reasons I quit working at the used car dealer!
Wow love the story at the facility to pass inspection. Incredible you got the light to go off! Reminds me of when I had a car sold and the buyer was picking it up in a few days. Of course the starter began acting up and left me stranded. I picked the buyer up as they had travelled on the ferry to Vancouver Island and didn’t want to turn the car off. I let it run while I waited for the buyer just to avoid getting stranded. It was likely worn starter contacts but I did not want to risk it not starting again. We went to directly to an insurance location so that it only had to start once for them. I watched nervously as he started the car and left.
"..there were a lot of racists jokes..." If that didn't spark everyone's interest after hearing it.. ha.
this is PEAK prancing horse. these things, and especially the electrics have a will all their own.
I once drove an automatic 400 back from a car show for 2 hours. it had just had 30k spent on the Bosch Kjet injection system and all the electricals. Ran like a top for the whole 2 hours. all the lights were on, radio on, the heater on, pulled good shifted good everything was awesome.
we get to the dealer where the car was for sale, I park it to assist my coworker in putting away some of the other cars then walk back. get in the 400, turn the key: Nada. not a whisper. all the interior lights were on so we had charge, but for the rest there was silence. being midnight, not having any tools on hand and it starting to rain, we just left the car there and headed on home.
we arrive the next day to diagnose the issue: slip in the key twist and it instantly fires. the only explanation I can think of is that the car was upset to be put away after being driven, but changed its mind after a cold wet night outside...
2011 my Suzuki motorcycle was flooded (enough to breach the carbs but not the instrument cluster approx 36") in storage in fresh water for 6 hours. Bike was not insured at the time as I recently got it and am a mechanic. When the water receded to 24 inches I backed my pickup to the door and got it out and immediately drained a few gallons of water from the engine refilled with 2 gallons of WD40 but did not crank it. Drained, cleaned and replaced all the fluids and got the bike to run within 24 hours of the flood. The fuel system and carbs were the biggest challenge. Blew air through the wiring connections and fired it up. Nice puff of smoke.
1. Ran it for 1 minute with fresh fluids and filters and drained green color mess.
2. Ran it again with fresh oil for 5 minutes and drained cleaner.
...By the 5th oil change and 30 minutes of running it was good.
Oil change #6 was after 100 mile shake down and it was fine. Then oil change #7 and never worried again.
Then replaced the harness with a clean oem Ebay harness, took virtually everything apart and cleaned every crevice (very little moisture was left suspension bearings seals did their job regardless). Also repacked the muffler. Spent a couple hundred bucks on it all and took a weekend and several evenings.
30k miles still runs like a champ and compression is what it should be. Bike hasn't even stalled. Not one issue since. I think the experience would have be drastically different if it was under water for longer or in a salt water flood. The storage facility's insurance wanted to total the bike but they saw my effort and were fair with me. They gave me $1500 for "lost motorcycle parts" and I agreed to not sue them for damages. I did not have time to worry about properly torquing the oil drain bolt so it later stripped as I was frantically working when getting it back together. Still runs and no issues or worries.
Car Trek 5 is going to be the most insane thing RUclips has ever seen. Can't wait
You forgot about logan paul 😂
The ONE thing Michigan does right - you can register ANYTHING with a VIN as long as it's insured.
Great story Ed, glad you were lucky and able to get the car inspected in the end. I replaced the driver’s seat in my Hyundai Santa Fe with one from a Mercedes S-Class, so I have a permanent airbag light on my dash now but it’s totally worth it.👌
Looks like the best season yet! Freddy looked like a very disappointed Stig.
That poor kids hairline... I feel for him.
Hi from New Zealand I'm 52 ,had cars since a baby ,seen it go from carbs, points, dizzy, pushrods, etc to electronic everything,I was a Toyota/Lexus,Ford Holden Tech, Iv got a BF barra and a Nissan C33 Laural 25 DET usual mods, link ECU, no weird computers that won't talk to a laptop no airbag or abs from the factory, its scary,ECU and scans throws wrong codes , the gearbox gets rebuilt, shit its the ECU pack on a Ford Mondeo, change every black box,get keys match good to go, and that was the auto gearbox tech that figured it out ,he goes the box i pulled out was 3000 km and perfect .
Always love Car Trek. All of the folks associated with it are great no matter what insanity you get up to.
Glad to hear you got the title sorted on the 599. I can't wait for the next Car Trek! They are such fun series.
0:31 Shmee's GT500 from the pickup day.
Passenger weight sensor replaced?.. Sound like the issue I had with a Lancer. The way to fix it is to do a weight sensor relearn (use a snap on solus pro to do a relearn [which is just add 66 lbs, remove the weight, and it back, and do the hokey pokey ie follow the onscreen instructions]). You can also use the scanner to actively monitor the weight sensor, so you can tell if your sensors are misplaced or out of spec.. So to all the Lancer/Evo folks with after market seats and srs light, use the weight sensors and do a relearn.
Bump if you can, I'm almost willing to bet the dealer didn't do a relearn (cause I know the Mitsubishi dealer couldn't figure this out).
I have restored a few flood cars. What I used to do was resistance test the wiring. Corrosion often causes the resistance increases
In Texas you don't even need doors to pass a rebuild inspection.
I love car trek I'm so glad you guys are keeping the series going it really does remind me of the good old days on Top Gear the fact that you guys are truly friends plays a big part in it you guys all work great together and I love to see the contact I hope to see a season 10
I would love to meet Ed and the Person that trusts him enough to drive their 20ish million dollar McLaren F1.
Tyler's 456 is in the sweet spot. Not so old as to be uncomfortable and not new enough to have these headaches.
Glad You got It Legal, Great Looking Car.......I Would Love it like you do.....tall guys and Ferrari's Don't Normally Fit But This 599 is the Exception, My 5'5" Brother Owns a Very Nice Ferrari but I Don't fit in it comfortably being 6'2".........599s are Awesome Looking and I Would Love One If I Had The Extra Money to Have One. GOD BLESS Your 599
Car Trek boys living the dream!!! Can't wait, always a treat. Keep em coming!!!
It is most likely not be the same setup, but on 2 Dodge Durangos, the intermittent airbag light was from the connector under the passenger seat. I had to disconnect the connector, make sure all the cables were as foward into the connector as possible, clean, and then I reconnect it. I also had to make sure nothing was pulling on the wires when the seat was moved forwards or backwards to have it coming back. So on the Durangos, it was the actual connection, socket and plug, from seat to car.
I had similar situation with my bmw e65 side airbag and I changed connectors on wiring harness. It had corrosion inside of them and was changing resistance of the circuit.
That trailer was so well made, I’m excited
The production and quality is just brilliant for a min I thought it was a movie 👍😱👏😎💯great job guys
“I need a very durable condom and zip ties” lmao I can’t imagine what that lady was thinking
"When i need to build a makeshift condom, i don't have a condom to start with"
**Hoovie's Belt Buckle**
"HIGH PRESSURE-STAND BACK"
Probably someone would be raped
I too am battling an Airbag light for the last few months on a super exotic 2004 ford explorer.
that is common enough that I'd expect there to be "sensor delete" plugs for it, then you can ditch the airbags if you like. It's a plug that goes on the cable to airbag sensors and just simulates OK signal to the control module. I used those on a 98 VW beetle I had with an engine swap that would constantly bitch about the airbags and fail inspection because of it.
@@noth606 thanks for the tip might resort to that. However I live out in the country so between deer and cell phones I really want a nice aggressive air pillow in my way in case someone decides my face would look better implanted in my dash board. Lol
Can't wait for next Car Trek, you three together are just amazing .. great entertainment .. thank you 👍
Ed I nominate you as mankind’s representative when the aliens rock up. No fear, judgment or preconceptions forthcoming from yourself, just an inquisitive ‘did you guys travel here in that? Awesome, can I have a go?’
The state: “Antique cars without airbags or seatbelts: no problem”
Also the state: “cars with airbag lights on: no bueno”
I once got a car passed through a NC State Inspection with an issue (later fixed, O2 Sensor) that cause the check engine light to stay on. If I disconnected then reconnected the battery, the light would be off for 10 minutes. That was all the time I needed.
Cant wait to see you drive your LP640 on this season, shit is gonna be sick
Wait..... Ed actually USED some of those tools in his garage-mahal?!? Now that is news! 😁
"I'm coming on your inside". Something I want no man to say to me...ever.
I caught that too.
Even in the trailer you can see the evolution of CarTrek! Awesome guys keep it up!!. Getting better and better!
Alright! I am getting a sense of chemistry and a whiff of the early seasons of Top Gear UK. Keep it up guys!
Have been using it looking for a GT350, title info video helped me avoid a car also. Thanks Ed, and crew.
Car Trek has Become my new addiction lol. Mind you i just discovered it last month.
“Sorry mam I can’t loan you $100” *rolls up window of Ferrari 599*
You would not be happy with Massachusetts. To register that, you have to go through a "real" inspection. First, the inspector is a State cop who did something wrong, so got assigned to do inspections. So from the start, he's pissed. Next, you have to present the insurance sheet of everything that needs replacement. For a flood car, this is every single electronic component, every connector has to be re-pinned. You need receipts for all replaced parts. You also need another copy of all this documentation to register it. They check all the numbers. Vin, trans, engine and run them to be sure they're not stolen. They stamp every single piece of paper. And the fun part. If you don't trailer or flatbed the car, at a minimum, you get a ticket. At max, they impound it and you have to return with a flatbed or trailer. If you pass, you pay $50 and get a "salvage title" which allows registration. This title is the same for theft recover, flood, crash, total, kit car.
Throw a heavy bookbag in the passenger seat when it gets inspected, works every time
I just want to tell you guys that I support all of you equally. I just watch more of Hoovie's videos. You're ok too Ed. Waiting patiently for Car Trek 5.
The car God's finally gave you a break in that moment. Great story as always!
Humans: Never, EVER work on the pass. seat airbag sensor/ switches systems, etc before ensuring the car is COMPLETELY unpowered, no battery connect. Etc. proper reset will require a totally INEPT dealer to resolve, until you do it yourself!🤣 Make sure your key is out of ignition at least of you put a stereo in a car, requiring you merely disconnect, the passemger Airbag on/off light, doing so will send a code, and a headache .. I could only image what a ridiculous shitshow that would become on a ferrari. 🤣 , love u guys. You’re doing gods work; VinWiki. 🙏🏽
Turning that car on and is not quiet. Must have been an interesting day at inspection. Haha
sounds like me trying to pass emissions with no cats here in VA lol
Watching hoovie try to get that Mercedes to crank. Had one, same years, same color, diesel, would pull that BS when the fuel filter clogged with whatever grows in diesel. I felt his pain in that clip. HAHA.
*Ed* *Bolian*
Here is a list of possible solutions for your problem:
1. Many cars have the SRS computer on the floor between the footwells.. One of the lowest integrated electronics components in most cars and the first to go in floods. If it is still functional and well isolated and designed.. All you'll have to do is take it out and dry it then inspect the PCB for corrosion.. If there's any mineral buildup or corrosion.. Fix it and throw it in an ultrasonic cleaner and you'll be done. Also while you are at it.. A pick and airgun to clean the contacts is advised.
2.seat foam holding water deep inside and the humidity is messing with the sensor or constantly changing the weight on the sensor while driving and moving around making the computer think that the fluctuating readings are indicative of a haywire sensor.. So it marks it as faulty.
3. Usually if changing a sensor doesn't fix a problem the wiring is the next suspect. You'd be surprised what poor contact or oxidation can do.. There's so much science behind the placement of grounding terminals and making wiring crimps that it's not even funny... Especially if you're the guy that has to figure out that the dissimilar metals with the high current spike and marginally poor crimp can in certain conditions throw off the entire ground side of the car causing everything to lose it for a few seconds. Almost 6 months to diagnose....
4.Last resort.. Canbus sniffer like the cantact and just find out exactly how this error comes to be. The repair manual should be a great place to find out which computer determines this error and how.. Chances are the ecu just takes the SRS's word for it and the problem is entirely confined to the airbags. So SRS, wiring and sensors. This is especially true if upon listening on the main OBD port and you hear the SRS only report an OK/ERROR status.
In some cases the entire SRS may need to be reprogrammed if there was a collision and the module took ANY action. You can determine this by checking if there is a freeze frame stored there. The purpose of that is to store the conditions of the car at moment of impact for investigations. Used as court proof sometimes. So should be accessible. Some manufacturers will make the airbag light go off in this case to prevent the car from being put on the road again before a thorough repair and inspection.. In which case the SRS computer is entirely replaced and they charge a lot for it. After which they go into a backroom and reprogram it in seconds and sell it as a refurb.
Really Interested to know how this works out for you.
I might've made an error here or there.. Be kind.
I know this car... when i saw it in car trek and ed said it had a flood title, i thought to myself it looked exactly like one i had seen, in person, at a flood rebuilder dealership in PA. Then he showed the screenshot of it in front of that dealership. What a small world!
If you like that airbag light adventure, I see so many more fun mysterious electronic gremlins in your future as the owner of this fine flooded vehicle. It should keep providing content to tarvish long after you sell it to him😀
When I started watching you three, I was impressed by Ed, was bemused by Tyler, and disliked Freddy. Now, I simply love all three of you (and Jared). As great as you all are individually, the sum of you all equates to something simply phenomenal. Thanks for your channel(s), especially this one for introducing me to so many positive elements of car culture.
DISLIKE FREDDY? that's like kicking a puppy
Getting a little grimy on hiding that air bag light Ed..... LOL
Ed, there's usually a 0 point calibration you can do on seat weight sensors. Also, some seat weight sensors are not recommended to be serviced, so you may need a whole seat. I would imagine someone would have tried a 0 point already, however just trying to help.
I also worked at EAG where you bought the car from.
Don’t know how you landed the drive of 022 Ed, but what a coup. Can’t wait! You need to do a story on it too.
Sounds like the yearly car saftey inspections in sweden. A friend used kapton tape and copper tape to add a connection from the fuel warning light to the ABS light so it would pass inspection.
@Ed Bolian In BMW world seat mats are typical problem.. It is easy to damage them. So solution is disconect seat matt and put resistor in a plug. Car will always thing that somebody is sitting in that seat. So in case of accident arbag will be deployed. One issue is that modern cars also check passanger seatbelt.
I once wired the airbag light into the oil pressure light 😁 Ignition on, lights on. Start the engine and both go out 😎🤓
Cut the trace on the circuit board powering the airbag warning bulb. Insert a timer to power the bulb for the correct amount of time when starting the car. Then turn off the bulb. It can all be done in the area the size of half a postage stamp.
This is going to be the best car trek yet I bet! Can’t wait
you guys are getting better!
this is gonna be great :)
Love the trailer! Laughed out loud twice during it!
At a gas station, just hearing somebody say "I need a very durable condom and some zip ties" would have been a funny encounter lol.
599 - Can you check the contacts if dirty or showing up some sort of corrosion. check for continuity on the cables. check the pins to be fully locked in place, sometimes they get loose.
Tyler didn’t even hold the door for you when you were MAX 3 steps behind. How rude
"Each state will have some form of inspection requirement." -Ed
"Hold my beer." -Oklahoma
I found out that all you need to do to get a rebuilt title in Oklahoma is tell a tag agent you rebuilt it. They literally don't even inspect it unless the car is newer than 5 years. Good for car guys, might not be so good for the public. 😅
Ahhhhh the joys of ownership of a salvage vehicle
Georgia Rebuilt Salvage inspections can be Horrendous!!! I took a completely repaired Suburban in for an inspection after rebuilding it after a light rollover.
They pulled down the headliner and made me cut the entire roof off and replace it. That cost me an extra $3000.00.
I did find my 2005 Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG on AutoTempest
1. Get the autel maxis and it clears the airbag code every time, as long as you key off for 15 sec after code clear. So stupid that Ferrari dealer can't clear codes lol.
2. Fault is most likely the harness. Airbag control module read the resistance to all associated components. Flood vehicles have water and sediment damage to connectors that change the resistance.
3. If you don't believe me, ask Federico if I know what I'm talking about
I guess there’s no way to put a bad bulb in its place? Lol thanks for the videos, cheers! Still waiting for an easy venue to watch the car trek series
This is what his wife has to listen to everyday at the dinner table 😂
You really are the next great « top gear » trio sincerely can’t wait to watch next car trek
First time I've watched your channel looking forward to the madness of car trekn👍
I don’t Care what anyone says about Ed bolian. I always will and still do believe, Ed is the single best U-boat skipper in the Tricolore navy! LoL
Cheers to the new car trek. 👍🇮🇹🚗
Here in Oklahoma: inspection??? LMAO what inspection?
Corrosion or damage to the passenger seat SRS wiring harness. Intermittent electrical connection to the weight sensor or seat mounted side air bag.
Love the shots at Russel Brasstown!
Car inspections can be interesting...my rusty 1974 BMW Tii wouldn't pass ANYTHING, BUT I knew a guy that liked Budweiser, so for a 6-pack he passed the car by sticking the emission probe to a newish Audi that was in his shop...have beer, will travel...this was in Massachusetts in 1985.
So with the intermittent light. It could be two other things that may have not been thought of. This is going off my Maserati that had the same issue, though after a crash. not a flood. The cars have the same system though. the 4 sensors are on the seat frame. not in the seat like a normal car. The foam could be slightly water logged messing up the calibration (seat is constantly heavier) making the car see an abnormal weight and throwing an error. Or in the case of my maserati, there was crash codes from airbags blowing. After replacing the bags and resetting the crash data. I had this same intermittent light depending on passenger weight, driving on bumps etc. What fixed it was doing a weight sensor calibration. I just used weights I had in the shop. Never saw the code again. Of all tools It took an Autel Elite scan tool. I didnt need the Ferrari/Maserati software.
Oh, and i believe the occupant sensors need to be coded if they are replaced. This I am not 100% sure about though.
I love hearing about Ed wrenching on his own cars, considering how in Car Trek he either refuses outright or fails trying.
Not exactly true he fixed the Maserati on Car Trek 3
I wonder if the lady is still in the parking lot trying to get some cash to pay for her inspection. 🤣
