    So loved this video! It brings back many happy memories of my time there with family. Lots of rock hunting, sand castle making and overall beach activities. It was beautiful before the devastating fire that burned so much of the area, not that it isn't still an awesome place now but just so different looking.

      It's growing back a bit now. It would have been good without a fire, but it's interesting to look at now. You can see long distances which allows you to see the hills a little better. The beach is still beautiful.

    Love the beach! Especially Lake Superior. Up here in the Keweenaw we have great agate hunting, as I am sure you know. Have you hunted the mouth of the Gratiot river yet? From the mouth of the Black River to Five Mile Point is the best area. The Lake is at a record high this year. We had waves crashing into the trees tearing up all kinds of good stuff. New rocks to be found and more black sand than I've ever seen. Your videos are great and I really enjoyed them. I'm going to go back through all of them. Thanks for bringing me along and have a great day. Be safe.

    Ive camped there almost exactly where he parked for the last 24 years. Ive combed that beach multiple times a year for agates. A little fun fact, there was a nail sticking up on the lake side of the bridge that cut me, giving me 7 stitches that i got at the newberry hospital. I bought a cheap U.V. light and then forgot to take it along. It wasn’t really the correct light anyway, but I was going to try it. Yooperlites just look like plain rocks without the light, so I wouldn’t have brought more than one home.

    Thanks for the video! I have Rockhounds all over the eastern U.P.. I like to camp not far from Perry’s Landing, but recently they logged out my favorite disperse camping site! 😢 Still, that is a great area to rockhound early and late in the season. It’s gotten a lot busier in the last few years, especially with the Yooperlites craze. I am one of the keepers at Crisp Point Lighthouse, east of the Two-Hearted River. It’s a great place to look for all kinds of rocks! The drive is a bit much some some people. Plan on at least an hour to get there from “anywhere”. A word to those who may travel the UP: Don’t rely on GPS to get around! It does not differentiate roads from ARV/snowmobile trails in many areas. You may find yourself stuck! Having said that, the UP is my favorite place to be! Keep up the good work with your videos!

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  4 года назад

      Good advice! When I make my annual pilgrimage up to hunt agates for a few days, I usually start out at the campground right next to Perry's Landing. Then I head to the mouth of the Two Hearted. After that, it's off to Vermillion Point. I have stopped at the Crisp Point Lighthouse a couple of times, but as you said, everything is such a long drive. It's frustrating that I usually walk almost to the lighthouse from Vermillion Point, but it takes an hour to drive there. I have never figured out why there is no road that runs along the water in that whole area, except near Perry's Landing. I have a map of the area from the office at Muskallonge State Park that shows lots of little trails. Even though I have a Jeep, I'm still not willing to go exploring those trails on my own. As you said, it's hard to tell which trails are large enough for a Jeep and don't have trees down on them or are flooded out. So I end up driving WAAAYYY around to get from place to place. It's still a ball, but I'd rather spend more time on the beach and less in the Jeep.

      Crystal Ridener the campground is about a quarter mile down the road from where I’m standing. It’s a rustic campground with only an outhouse. There is no shower or electricity or running water. The beach is on the other side of some trees, so you do have to go down a short path to see the lake clearly. If you’re in a wheelchair, I’m not sure how easy the little path is. It might be fine, but I really don’t remember.

      I attached my GoPro to my windshield last summer when we drove to Colorado to go four wheeling. I’ve had Jeeps for the last thirty years. This is my first Rubicon though. It’s actually only my third a Jeep; I keep them for a long time. Anyhow, I’ve never really done any serious four wheeling and somehow my wife agreed to go to Colorado. We didn’t drive very challenging trails as far as rock climbing goes, but they were very narrow and if you drove off the road just about anywhere, it was like a thousand feet down. Pretty hairy when we had to pass a Jeep coming in the other direction. I decided not to post the videos here because they didn’t really fit the theme and they were just a webcam with us talking about how not to die.

    Agates form in the rhyolite. Rhyolite is often banded because it flowed as a lava. The color flow bands help identify it. Did you look for raw green copper nuggets? There was plenty of basalt pebbles on that beach. Maybe copper? Too far east for copper? Beautiful. Peaceful, even in the rain. :))

    There used to be a “coast guard road” that ran along the shore from Grand Marais to Whitefish Point. The road can still be found in some areas. The section between Whitefish and Crisp Point lighthouses is now part of the diamond 8 ATV/snowmobile trail. It has been torn up from ATV use and most parts are now impassable. So much of the shoreline along there is unreachable...unless you have the ability to get up and down “cliff” faces!

    • @MichiganRocks

      I have been afraid to explore some trails that I see on a map I have from the Muskallonge Lake campground. The people working there don't seem to know too much about the backroads and I didn't feel encouraged to try them. I have a Jeep, but the area is so remote that I'd hate to get stranded back there. I'm also usually only there for a couple days so I don't want to spend all my time going down dead end trails and having to back track. Sure would be nice to go exploring with a local though.

      No it didn’t but I could watch you walk and look at rocks all day. The water sound is so relaxing and reminds me of my trip in April. To the MN side of Lake Superior.

      Minnesota is where the best agates are found. I’d love to get into a gravel pit there.

      Yeah I was only on the shores but a lot of different beaches between Duluth and just north of Two Harbors. I was alone and wasn’t to keen on going to far north alone. Plus my husband would worry about me too. I got 2 good agates and then took up micro agates as my new hobby🤣🤣

    Thanks so much! I'm new to the Dremel. Which bit? Tyty 💜

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 года назад +1

      I don’t remember talking about a Dremel in this video. I don’t know what you’re trying to do with one. I think the only things I have done with a Dremel on any videos is drill holes and polish Petoskey stones with Zam. I use cheap 1mm bits to drill small holes and I use a felt wheel for polishing with Zam.

    • @bbarror
      @bbarror 2 года назад

      Thanks I meant the wheel. Are there different ones?

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 года назад +1

      @@bbarror The felt wheel I use is 1 inch in diameter. As it wears, it gets smaller. I just added it to my Amazon storefront, which is in the description of this video. But to use it you need the shaft that fits in the Dremel that you attach the wheel to. For that reason, I also had a $15 Dremel accessory pack in my storefront that includes both parts, plus other stuff that you may or may not need. You can also buy the little shaft separately.
      Other people buy a much larger wheel and attach it to a drill press. I bought a Harbor Freight one to try that, but the wheel seems to be falling apart faster than I can use it.

      Nope, I haven’t looked for them. I bought a cheap flashlight for this trip, but I forgot it at home. Oops.

    the rock at 4.32 looks a lot like the ones i just found on my canoe trip, the white quartzy agate with the blood red blotches. Ill be posting my vid shortly was hoping to find out what it is, the red spots in particular.

      I'm not going to have time to look at that. I just got back from a four day trip to the Keweenaw Peninsula and my daughter is coming to visit for the next four days. I'm just trying to get caught up on responding to comments now.

    Can you have a camp fire on that beach? Lots of good wood to burn.

      There are campgrounds near both of these places where you can have a fire. I’m not sure about the beach.

    There is an awful lot of driftwood there on that beach.... Are you allowed to pick up any of the driftwood and take it home... That's something else I like to collect driftwood and make projects out of them.
