      That's a nice memory of your dad. Honestly, I didn't even look at the camping area, I spent all my time on the beach. I think Clovis said that the campground had been moved because the high water washed out the old one. I might have that slightly wrong, but it was something like that.

    I really loved this video, for many reasons. The Works of Art Sally creates with those rocks made me feel good and smile. I know she’s going to get some inquiries from this video. I love how you and Sam have bonded over your shared hobby he’s really a good kid and headed for great things. Also, I think Clovis is one of the coolest names. I’ve heard in a long time. !
    I haven’t lived in the Midwest since 1971 and I forget it can still be cold up there in May …. It’s 98° here in Arkansas. 🥵

    Sam the Tumbling King! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 And I laughed at “Urbanite” - at one of my favorite rockhounding spots I find what I call “Brickia”: chunks of water-worn red brick hiding amongst my favorite conglomerates 😂 (btw if you’ve never tried tumbling a conglomerate before, give it a shot! I’ve gotten some beautiful results with them, just don’t put them in with fancy rocks in case a pebble breaks free along the way; usually I cut/grind them on the saw into tumbler sized chunks and they stay together pretty well!)

      @@MichiganRocks I’m not certain what type of conglomerates I find here, they *look* like red brick with a lot of microcrystalline quartz pebbles embedded in them, but that red matrix seems to be some kind of chert/jasper so they tumble SUPER well as long as the inclusions stay put! She had a beautiful ROCK GARDEN.
    I was only 7-8 yrs. My parents moved and we had no family 3000 miles away for my father's new job.
    I missed my GRANDMA.
    I visited her as much as I could until she was gone.
    I never got to say good'bye.
    My WHITE HAIRED LADY was a ROCK MOZAIC 😇 and taught me about rock names.
    She also used glass.
    Some were very large, her living room walls were full of them.
    I CAN STILL FEEL I AM THERE WITH HER AS IF IN PRESENT TIME.
    ❤ this group rock beach hunt.😊

    Those stones you throw back would make a pretty rock garden in the area you cut down those trees, could add a pretty bird bath with the stones around it. You find some beautiful rocks and you would only need to take home a few each time you go hunting to have quite a collection around a birdbath.

    The rocks that catch my eye are always different from the ones that catch your eye. Every time you stop and reach for one I think "ooo, that's a neat one" but I'm hardly ever looking at the one you pick up. 😃 I guess someone has to pick up the ugly ones but I'm not saying if it's you or me 🤣

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  6 месяцев назад

      I frustrate a lot of people that way. Everyone has different tastes, so it's impossible to know what someone else is going to like. It makes no sense for me to try to vary it by grabbing rocks that I don't find interesting. At least if I pick up something I like, there's a decent chance that someone else will like it too. I'll keep trying!

    So many rocks, like 1:31 look like they are covered in a ‘purple coralline’ type of coating. Any ideas?

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  6 месяцев назад

      They're not covered by anything. That color goes all the way though.

    • @given0fox968
      @given0fox968 6 месяцев назад

      I doubt it, but you have more experience doing it, and I have no valid explanation for what I’m saying; just a question/observation.
      To that end, are you saying the dark outer ‘shell’ (don’t know the appropriate word, just using my best analogy) of it goes from one side to the other if you cut in half? With the rock in your hand at 1:31 I’d call BS

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@given0fox968 I left that one on the beach, so I can't cut it to verify one way or the other. I just know from experience in cutting a lot of rocks that they usually look the same on the inside as the outside.
      There is something called a weathering rind on rocks though, where the outside can be a slightly different color due to oxidation, fading, iron staining, etc. It's not usually too dramatic, but it's noticeable.

    • @given0fox968
      @given0fox968 6 месяцев назад

      @@MichiganRocks based on the surrounding rocks, and the one I mentioned in your hand, I saw a similar ‘hue’ in what I feared was some sort of ‘staining’ in that rock and the surrounding. If (which sounds like I’m not) something was staining them, we’d both be concerned. Appreciate the responses, and you sharing your adventures & finds.

      Probably not. It's not a bad idea, I just probably won't get around to doing it. I do like how the pointy end of the spoon can get under rocks well. A deeper spoon might make that harder.

      @@MichiganRocksWe see a lot of tourists on our Keweenaw beaches with cat turd scoops on a pole, but regardless, McClains is a waste of time for agates. A few miles up the beach at Calumet Water Works Township park is where the grapefruit sized agates are. You're far more likely to find agates under water with a viewing bucket too.
      Better luck next time.
