    Some of the rocks you will see in this video:
    Petoskey Stone - Hexagonaria ~360 million year old fossilized coral.
    Favosites - another fossilized coral, sometimes called "Charlevoix stone"
    Horn coral
    Cladapora - another fossilized coral
    Puddingstone - a conglomerate rock
    Gowganda Tillite - This stuff is over two billion years old.

    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

      You took the worst stones the beach had to offer, while leaving a few red and yellow agates or jaspers (?) behind. It was disturbing to say the least;/

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  4 года назад +1

      @@ralfiasz There are no agates on this beach. There are a few red jaspers, but not many. Don't be disturbed by what I left behind. I like some rocks, you like others. The others are there for those who like them. That's a great reason not to bring everything home. Most people around here would take home the same rocks I did. Petoskey stones and puddingstones are very popular in Michigan.

    All those banded stones, the ones that don't tumble well, would look nice on an outdoor window sill or in a rock garden. The bands don't show as well when they're dry but you get to enjoy them whenever it rains. I have a flower pot with a small jade growing in it. I covered any visible soil with smooth, rounded flat.....ish stones and get to see all those pretty bands each time I water it because they show better when they're wet. Maybe you could do something like that for your wife? Oooo, better yet! A rock garden with a water feature!!

      I have wanted to make a birdbath or a bird bath with a pump to pump the water out of the birdbath and over the side. I just haven't spent the time to find out how much it would cost to have a big boulder moved to my back yard. It might happen someday.

I don't have access to all those fantastic 'pebble' beaches like you have, though.....that I'm aware of, anyway! Gonna do some research over the winter months...thank you, Google Earth....to see if I can find some that aren't too far or too difficult to access, like you had suggested!

    The waves wash my brain clean. Nice that the brisk weather lets you out between the gales of November remembered. Nice rockin' hat! Some HUGE salmon red potassium feldspar crystals in that granite pegmatite. My heart almost quit beating when you tossed that striped mustard yellow one back, catch and release. I couldn't believe you tossed it! Do you know how to tell if a geologist has walked down the beach ahead of you? The salt is licked off all the rocks. (Not that your water is salty...)

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  4 года назад

      I'm a rock licker too. No need when you pick them out of the lake though. I have no idea what that yellow rock was, but I didn't think I could do much with it. The white part seemed to be softer too because it was worn away more. That's not a good sign that the rock will polish well.

    My husband and I just love your videos! They are done so well and we always feel as though we're right there with you. Rocks are natures jewels, for sure. After watching many of your videos, you've inspired us to buy a rock tumbler, grit and a few pounds of rough small rocks to tumble. At age 68, I've wanted to buy a tumbler for years so you pushed us over the edge with your educational gems! Thank you so much. You have to be so proud your videos have had so many hits. Not only are you a teacher, who by trade has a great impact on young lives, but you've impacted so many online and continue to do so. Please know you are appreciated and we look forward to more videos. One more thing, I noted a couple comments in other videos about Yooperlites. I've just discovered them online recently and had to buy a couple small ones off eBay. They are a hoot! But are totally unrecognizable unless you flash a UV light on them. Many of the rocks you pass look as though they could be Yooperlites. Maybe take a UV light with you next time you're out toward sundown. Best wishes to you!

      Yep, the water is pretty cold. Those are neoprene gloves that are supposed to be waterproof, but they usually leak after a season or two. They act like a wetsuit at that point and keep your hands somewhat warm even if they're wet.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  4 года назад +1

      I'm using a GoPro Hero 7 Black with the GoPro handle. I have a Saramonic SR-XM1 3.5mm TRS Omnidirectional Microphone that I lost on the beach that day. I'm not sure how it fell out, but I bought a new one already. I also have one of those fuzzy things on the mic to cut the wind. I couldn't believe how well it worked that day. It was pretty windy. The camera isn't water proof when using the mic because I have to take the door off the side to use it. I also have a ULANZI V2 Multifunctional Vlogging Case to hold the microphone adapter. That darn adapter costs more than all the other stuff combined.
      I don't have a gimbal, but I'm seriously thinking about getting one. I spend a ton of time in Final Cut Pro straightening videos. When I film so much over water, it really shows if I'm holding the camera crooked. I'm almost always holding it crooked too.

      I am going to start showing more tumbled rock videos. Many of my rocks take months to tumble because I'm a perfectionist about tumbling, so it's not practical to put that at the end of my videos. Just last night I posted a video about some rocks I picked up in Harrisville a couple months ago and just finished tumbling. So there's one where you can see the collection and the tumbling, but in two separate videos.

      I did leave it behind. The white areas were worn more than the yellow if I remember correctly. I wasn't convinced that the yellow went all the way through either. Many times the rocks have a weathering rind on the outside and looks different on the inside.
      That being said, I regret leaving this one behind. It's a very unique color for this area. Also, my wife just bought a metal daisy shaped wall hanging for our house. I like the metal part well enough, but the centers of the flowers are gaudy plastic diamonds about an inch in diameter. My goal is to find a yellow rock to slab and make into round cabs to replace the plastic diamonds. This would have been perfect if the color actually went all the way through the rock.

    Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: I admire how you only harvest rocks you're going to have a purposefor...leaving stones for those who forage after you. You and I have that in common. When I rockhunt...I meditate at the site first...give prayers thanking God for the day, my life, and my safety. Then I meditate on the wondrous magnificence of our Earth and thank her for the gifts I will receive that day and renew my vow to be a good Earth citizen and have as little impact on the site as possible. I try to make reparations where possible as in picking up trash and filling in holes where appropriate. I hunt thoughtfully. When I'm done...I repeat my meditations and prayers...thanking God for the day, my safety, and my life. Then pay respect to the Earth for allowing me to walk amongst beauty and for gifts received. This may all sound silly...but added depth to my experience. It was like a balm to my soul and eased the bruises inflicted by a toxic society . It healed my body as I exercised and breathed fresh air. I enjoy reminiscing about it now. Thank you for a opportunity to share about my rockhounding style. I highly recommend simple respect and gratitude to deepen your rock hunting experience.

      I do a lot of the same things. I try to pick up some trash to sort of pay for what I'm taking. I often thank God for the beautiful beach or the beautiful day, but I don't do it at particular time, just as I'm amazed by creation during the day.
