    I added all the drivetrains for the JL/JT with typical tire sizes in the description, but it's really confusing. It's better to address all of them on a organized chart like I have on my website: www.exodus4x4.com/jeep-regear.html

    • @Exodus4x4
      @Exodus4x4  3 года назад

      General rule as you modify - For each 300LB add-on, (i.e. overland tent, UD60s, frequent towing, rock climbing, etc.) go UP ONE gear ratio. The gear ratios installed on a Jeep are (from smallest to largest): 4.10 / 4.56 / 4.88 / 5.13 / 5.38

    • @Exodus4x4
      @Exodus4x4  3 года назад +1

      With all that weight and tire, I’d go 5.13. Most of the time it’ll be under power from the 2.0 so gear it that way.

      I think there's some weirdness on the JKU table: there's three transmission option for the 3.6 and one for 3.8, and then the hemi swaps you lucky bastards get to have there... anyway, I think the "3.6 auto" should read "3.8 auto" and the "3.6 5spd" should be "3.6 auto". Afaik there never was a 5 spd manual for JK/JKU, and I don't think 3.6 auto should say "LOL" for 40" tires. I'd would definitely need new gears for that, but it's doable.

      Everything is all good with them so far and no issues? Just asking because I keep seeing horror stories about oh 4.88's won't fit, to dealer can't reprogram the gear size because they aren't supported. I have a Tazer mini so could care less and would adjust myself. I had Yukon in my old JK and will probably go that route unless someone knows of something better or equal at a better price point.

      I got a Sport on purpose because IMO the 4 to 1 is too low for the diesel. I can get 24.5 mpg if I cruise at 68mph (what ive found to be the “best” highway speed for efficiency) . It actually climbed about 1mpg moving up from 3.73 but it also falls off faster > 75mph. With stock gearing at 75 I could get almost 22mpg but now its more like 20.5
      In town /offroad its much more fun to drive hard to tell mpg delta there. It’ll also still readily hit the speed limiter but its really over revving the diesel to do so, not that a gladiator has any business going 110mph.

I've since added a smart cap Evo A which added about 250lbs of weight and plan to add additional options. I purchased the gas 3.6L model. I didn't notice any additional RPM's at highway speeds with 5.13, with 4.10's I did since it would get stuck in a single gear and just rev up it wasn't shifting properly with 37's. I'm super glad I went with 5.13 gearing. I was thinking about supercharging it since it was lacking power, now I don't need to.

    Might also be a smart time to do complete bearing replacement and don't forget, 37 inch tires bring a lot of additional stress to your axle shafts. Might be a good time to upgrade to chromoly. Another thing to consider depending on how you use your jeep, or any 4x4 for that matter. May seem expensive in the beginning, but may save you a lot of headache on difficult trails. Bloody hell guys. This is making an impossible choice even more impossible. When I saw your awesome videos on which Jeep Gladiator to buy I was dead set on buying JT sport S with Max Tow package and regearing. Ok great. Here in florida they are bloody impossible to find. Every single sport in drivable vicinity is 3.73 and just regular sport and those that are max tow cost same as a gladiator rubicon.
    So I started looking at rubicons of which I have near me in abundance. 4.10 gears.
    Acoording to website you guys recommend 4.88 for 35s and 5.13 for 37s. Greeeeaaaaat.... On the scale of Mr. Alex Trebec... how badly do you want to regear an expensive rubicon I take "can I get by without doing it for $100?"
    I took my tacoma to moab for 6 weeks and colorado for 6 weeks and decided that I will never in my life do trails more difficult than elephant hill which is rated 3.5-4/10. I did that in long bed taco sr5 with stock gearing on 33s.
    Keeping that in mind... thought of shelling out $1,800 to regear 4.10 to 5.13 seems like I would really like to avoid.
    Lord... why does it have to be so difficult. I wonder if I can just get by with staying with 4.10 on rubicon I am basically about to buy (since I cant find sport s max tow locally) and slap 35s or 37s on there with a lift kit?!

    It’s not harder on the engine running in 6th with a taller rear end vs 8th with a lower rear end if they run the same RPM. What matters is the total reduction not the axle ratio. Getting 7th and 8th back mainly help with having more gear choices available.

    My TJ has the inline six with the three speed auto and 31" tires. It was a rental in Hawaii and has 3.07 differentials which is perfect for highway and fireroads but in 4WD low on steep rough downhills it overspeeds to 15mph so I have to ride the brakes to crawl and have burnt up a coupla sets of brakes. I don't see how upping the diffs will help (4.5+- diffs would only slow it down to 7mph). Maybe an Atlas transfer case with super low 4WD would work but that's a 2-3 thousand dollar solution.
    Mechanics have told me the Dana 30-35s work best with low ratio pinion gears like a 3.07 because there's more meat on the pinion gear and less torque transmitted to the differential, practically unbreakable. Upping to 4.88 diffs doubles the torque through a smaller pinion gear and is asking for trouble especially with bigger tires. The say upgrading to Dana 44s and stronger axles should be done if you go to 4.88 differentials if you run bigger tires. I'm happy with my 31" tires and 3.07 diffs but am troubled by downhill 4WD speeds and it appears there's no solution except thousand dollar upgrades. Any advice?

      Hi, I have a 2008 JK 6 spd 3.8 V6 manual with 3.73 gears with 35" tires; two separate shops recommended going with 5.13. It seems that manual transmission jeeps can get away with numerically higher gear setups, especially from what I've read about those with mountainous terrain and towing purposes who will benefit from that gear setup. Do your research well to get the most bang for your buck. In my case, I'm in Fl so basically flat lands but I will eventually go to 37 or higher plus a Hemi swap when the time comes ($$$). I don't do a lot of highway driving, so not too concerned about mileage for now. Best of luck with your build.

    If you have the 3.6 Pentastar with 35s, would you keep 4:10 gears with a Hamburger Supercharger installed? I know it would be more expensive but am wondering if it you spend some more money and go with the supercharger, would you gain more HP and torque and avoid the need to re-gear to 4:56?

    Really appreciate the knowledge. I have absolutely experienced the hesitation when the discussion of the ratio combined with the 8spd transmission came up.
    Imagine my surprise that the 392 came with 3.73(recon package was released later with 4.56). Checked the chart on your website and recommended is 4.10. No shops around here want to touch it

    • @Exodus4x4

      @@Exodus4x4 completely understand. Which was why I was surprised that the 4.57 gearing wasn’t offered from jeep (unless you ordered it with the recon package). Even the 4.10 ratio was marked as a nogo due to tuning with the transfer case (conversation with dealer to avoid voiding the ten year warranty package).
      My previous build was a ‘14 JKU with the GOBI rack, under armor, and steel pieces all around. 4.56 gears with a set of 35’s made a significant difference both on and off the trails. Current plans for the 392 aren’t that aggressive.
      Again appreciate the insight.

    I have a gladiator with 3.73. I put a roof top tent on it and tow a small trailer. I really wanted the max tow package with 410 so I could tow more weight. But wasn’t available when I bought. I won’t lift the truck and won’t change the tire size. Should I go ahead and get the 410? The max tow package also had a better axle and some other things. Just wondering if it is worth it to get 410s if it is different than what I would have gotten from the factory tow package. Thanks.

    Great video and excellent information! I see that your chart calls for a 392 Rubicon to be regeared at a ratio of 4.10 for 35" tires. Curious as to why Jeep is using 4.56 gears on the 392 Rubicon Extreme Recon with 35" tires. Reason for the question is that I have a 392 Rubicon and was considering 35" tires. Keep up the great work! The regear is being done by Rebel Offroad in laguna beach. They are using spicer parts for front and back. I saw how you talked about a 500 mile break in and not going over 65 mph as well as doing 4 x 15mile trips and stopping for a couple hours to let the bearings cool down. During that time, how often should I put my Jeep in 4 high so I can break in the front gears properly?

    You only gain torque in each respective gear… but since the trans has more gears you don’t have more torque outside of 1st gear since it will just run a lower transmission ratio. It will only help acceleration on the freeway by closing up the rpm gap between shifts which will have minimal impact on average power output.

We wheel hard trails-did Rubicon last year in our 2018 JLUR. We will do the same in the 392. However, We drive in town a lot. So...I am thinking I want to step up on gears but only to 4.10.
