I have installed several sets of USA standard gears and never had a problem, including the ones in my XJ on 35s that I have beat on for 4 seasons. Revolution gears are good as well. As far a regearing goes it's really not that difficult to do just time consuming, patience is key.
I did a 8.8 and HP D30 swap with ARB lockers in my TJ and did it all myself. At that point Revolution didnt exist yet so I had no real choice other than Yukon, they have been fine but that was also 10 years ago. Regearing isn't difficult but it is timeconsuming, when I did it I used Billavista's regearing Bible which was the go-to guide at the time.
I have a 2002 Jeep TJ Sahara with 3.07 gears. To do both front and rear with lockers I have been quoted $4k-7k to regear to 4.56. With the 3.07 I would need a new casing.
Yep, lol. Spent money on 31's and a stroker engine and now I need 4.10's, the regear wpuld cost me more than my Stroker, Clifford intake and Holley 390 DP combined!!! Nope, gonna buy spare axles and regear. Keep the old incase I screw something up, lol.
Great video and information. Would love to see the re-gear video. I didn’t rebuild my 30 because I got intimidated by the shims and crush sleeve I still have the axle and would love to build it. Thanks
I'm watching your videos, and this is EXACTLY what I am needing right now! Thank you for making these ideas and videos available, it's all good common sense, keep it up!
Got my gear set on my jk rubi from 4wp g2 gears 4.88 no issues running 35s also got their worry free warranty even if u trash them they will cover every thing for 3 years and you got an option to extend that warranty after wards no worries here
I recently contacted a semi large shop with Axle in their name, about regear for my JLU Rubicon. told them I wanted 5.13's front and rear with master install package. they said they don't do master installs with regear, it will be Ring and Pinion Gear only, Price of $3,500. to $4,000+ and a 2-3 day job. First off I want new Bearings and Seals if someone is going messing around in there, and they say they don't replace with new ones. Second, they are a shop with several bays and they are going to tell me it takes 2 to 3 days to replace 2 Ring and Pinions only.
@@AustinH7 that's actually really good to know cause the place by me carries yukon, motive and revolution. I was like I want yukon! Lol I guess not anymore
I’ve been considering regearing my wife’s JKU Rubi. I’m running “35s” (315/70/17) with 4.10s and it drives fine, we don’t do much off-road but we tow a heavy popup a couple times a year and engine temps tend to climb. I’ve got nothing in front of the grill and a Mishimoto radiator and still have to go real easy to keep temps under 240. I’m thinking a set of 4.88 will help.
I don’t recommend 488 for that plus the temps reaching the high is another issue I tow with mine and I only see 234 than it drops quick. 488 will have your rpm’s screaming
@@cherokeeronnie how much are you towing with those temps? I’m towing right at the limit of what it’s rated for (3500 lbs). The chart I referenced shows 435 RPM increase from 4.1 to 4.88 being 2750 RPM at 70.
Id like to see a regear video also. If possible , at least verbal description of dealing with Chrysler 8.25 would be appreciated. It looks like it uses some internal thing to adjust backlash instead of shims behind bearings.
They are actually much easier to get backlash in my opinion. No pulling, shimming, pulling, shimming over and over again. Just adjust, lock down and you are good.
@@ky0611 anything can break but they aren't weak by any means, you might be thinking of a lunchbox locker that goes inside a factory carrier. The Detroit and Grizzly are both full carrier lockers and the strongest on the market. Only thing stronger would be a spool but that isn't a locker.
Great video! Planning on ordering a 24 Rubicon 4 door, with 35s, 3.6L, will put on roof top tent and maybe tow a couple of times a year. Should I go with the 4.56 or get 4.88 option from factory?
My shop uses yukons and they never had a customer return for bad regearing, nothing but good reviews and they wheel the hard stuff all over AZ and Moab. I wonder if what the shops and the diy people get are completely different.
Ronnie where are you located? I know you are a fan of folks doing their own work but I am not mechanical at all! The trouble is I live up in the Seattle area and don't know of a good reliable shop. Any advice you can provide will be very much appreciated.
Word of warning for those who want to do a regear themselves, I tried myself, but the gears were extremely noisy, even with a good pattern and backlash. No warranty because I did it myself. Was shit out of luck… Also do not buy Yukon gears! Those might have been why they were so loud.
@@Wanderer_XJ could be both. A deceleration noise can be a loose pinion I believe. I have a noise on acceleration which I believe is an issue with the ring and pinion itself
Love the videos and info. Would like your opinion on what I should go with in my WJ. 2004 4.0 currently on 32s with factory 3.55s. Highly unlikely but possibly 35s in the far distant future. Jeep is built around running a 33 though. Running the numbers I’m seeing 4.10s but have been told “you can’t have too much gear”. Jeep sees allot of sustained highway driving and I’m afraid 4.56 will be too low for normal driving. Any help is greatly appreciated. 35/30 Dana. Good source for complete gear set to complete the job?
Go with 410 if your not really serious about 35s and actually there is a thing as to much if you run smaller tires with 456 it scream on the high way with the rpm’s
And that’s funny how you say that that’s the third thing you should think about and that is the third thing I’m thinking about is regearing but I am not paying $3000 for a simple 488 regear so it looks like I’ll be doing it myself. I do everything else on my jeep. I’m sure I can do this. I did the rocker arms and lift kit so looks like I’m doing a regear
Great ,getting Yukon 4.88's installed right now. Why would any 4x4shop shop use Chinese crap? Wish I would have known this before. The Yukon (4.88) "whine" seems to be an issue.
My Xj is still at 354 lol I can't afford to regear my Dana 30/35 abs ex-military 93 model & I'm on 33" Mt would love something better if anyone has some old good 456 gear set up cheap hit me up please , I use 4lo just too be able to climb stuff
I have some fronts super cheap. Yukon 4.56. They only had 100 miles or so on em and I did not like the front locker. Place said they would not do the new locker without replacing the gears.
