Installing the wallboard first, as you did, means it's able to wick moisture up and into the studs. I just demoed a 45 year old shower that was built that way, so it will last; but there was serious moisture penetration to the studs, some surface mold, and every single stud was badly warped for sake of the moisture ~ so much so that I had to plane down the middle ones that were high and then sister and level all of the center studs to get a flat surface to install the wall board. Bit of work....
He didn't show the remaining steps in this video. Next is thinset and waterproof sheet membrane on the floors. 5" banding on the corners. The entire shower pan is then flood tested (filled). It's a different system than 45 years ago. The wicking is no longer an issue if done properly. We also cover the entire floor and walls in hydroban liquid membrane. Money well spent IMO
@@johng9562 it's only a mistake in a traditional pan liner system. It is recommended practice in a bonding flange system to give the mud pan a solid surface to screed from. So he has done these steps correctly
Not so much ~ some do it that way, most do not. Screed comment makes no sense as wall board is neither recommended or needed to screed ~ framing accomplishes the same thing (done this way for over 100 years) and the only change in modern design is to Install the wall board with a 1/4" gap from the tiled floor, then fill the gap with grout or silicone, which is the recommended and right way.
@@johng9562 grout or silicone??? Lol. Uh no.... lol. You clearly are not "familiar" with the bonding flange system. What the hell is he "grouting" ?..... he hasn't laid any tile!?..... This is a mud pack shower pan and bonding flange. You obviously have no idea what that is. 100 years?? Bonding flange systems are not nearly that old.
This is a sealed system where the “liner” goes on top of the mud and gets sealed around the drain flange (completely different from a 3 pc clamping drain). Its very important to know the difference and not mix systems
@@OBFTILEthis is the best system in my opinion, no chance of leaking especially if the hydro ban roll on is used, there is practically no chance of failure as long as you can paint and put it on thick enough, with tye sheet you still run the risk at the corners if the corner pieces are not used,
I need to do this for my curbless showers. My plumber went ahead and put oatey drains in. I don’t know if I can get the height right. How far down to the bed is the finished height?
how easy will it adapt to a one piece drain? here in florida most recessed showers dont use a 3 piece drain because most dont use any waterproofing in a recessed shower, instead its just a single drain glued...i would like to start using these drains
@@OBFTILE yes but would have to chip out floor a bit, but see no other way, thanks. also when gluing the drain do you have to set it so it bottoms out or can you set it at almost any height?
I have one this week, the one on this video ia done already unfortunately. Ive been so slammed with work that i didn’t even think of recording that process
@@OBFTILE ya entre en la página pero no estoy seguro cual es, si me puedes echar la mano con eso te lo agradecia mucho ! Es para ver si lo puedo usar para un trabajo que ya tengo el schluter instalado
can you use the hydro ban liquid waterproofing membrane instead of the liner. I spoke with FLoFX chase and he said that is works with that. Any thoughts?
The mudpac should also cover the colored part of the drain, only thing should be exposed is the black part where the grate will go
I'm confused. Where is the PVC liner? No water proof liner or adhesive added? Why?
Topical membrane. Pvc liner method is a thing of the past, with this drain and topical membrane water will never reach the mortar bed at all

I am familiar with all the systems, it's just a mistake to put the wallboard in the pan as there is no good reason to do so.

Do we have to put a membrane on top of the dry mix base or can we just use aqua defense? Thank you for the video
A pre-slop isn't needed? The concrete slap looks flat. No plastic pan liner?

justo lo que andaba buscando y me saliste en recomendado viendo un video de tile coach
Thanks for sharing.
Flo Fx is ABS, not PVC, don’t use pvc glue with abs.
Thank you

Not familiar with those type drains you mentioned, do you have access to the abs or pvc pipe? If so I would just attach it to that

Nice looking mud pack. Looks like it was done by a true professional
Thanks 👍
Do these drains need to weep? Is there any need to put waterproofing under the mud pan?
Hi I like the video. I just did one like this. I used sakrete sand mix. Do you have experience with it?
I dont have access to sakrete mud mix in my area but I’ve heard some people use it without a problem
what brand of mud bed you use
Maka a video installing the floor tile with grate . You’ll be the first

Yes you can. But we use the sheet membrane, banding, AND hydroban everywhere.
