I don't see what's wrong with Roy's goal he doesn't want to catch legendries he wants to challenge them so he's not Goh and he wants to uncover treasures and mysteries so he isn't Ash. If anything he sounds like he wants to be an explorer/archaeologist.
I think this is a good goal for roy and a explorer is just impressive.

Even though I personally love Liko way more, I do like Roy in general and don’t see anything wrong with him in my honest because he seems more of the adventurous type while wanting to be a archaeologist to an extent, sure they could of put way more effort than we got gotten and I personally feel like he should his own character and not solely relying on Ash because I personally don’t want an exact copy of Ash Ketchum but all in all, it’s a promising start!!! 🙂😍😁

Then why pokemon anime is still not high rates because listen to 🤡 who is ash hater/goh character fan/ pokemon go fan/fake plastic fan / Daiki Yamashita's fan from RUclips channel or Twitter account who suddenly appear since November 2019 instead major true anipoke fan who supports them since Kanto games also anime since first debut .No wonder pokemon anime is trash since pokemon journey until now
Why would Liko go back to school when she's being hunted by the Explorers? Come on, Long. You have to realize that it is way too dangerous to do that. If anything, I appreciate the anime for making online classes a thing for Liko and Roy so that they don't neglect their education in favor of an adventure, unlike Gou.
It also make them relatable to a lot of kids who had to do a lot of online schooling these last three years. Tought the fact they're doing it because they're on an adventure is a lot more pleasant than the real life reason. 😅
What! Goh didn't neglect school because he mostly knew about his Class subject so that could explain why he just did Homework and only appeared at school when needed!
Goh basically studying on a lot of things that have to do with school so he wouldn't have to be in School so he was kinda doing Home school!
Liko didn´t really ditch school, she stated that she appointed herself for online classes since the last episode and she stated it again in episode 4.
And I haven't seen anyone hating on Roy. I think he had a pretty decent introduction and it even connected to Liko´s pendant (that started to glow when it got close to the ancient pokeball). Not to mention that the dialogue about the legendary trainer from Kanto that traveled all around the world that was mentioned by Roy could easily be referring to Ash. And I think the episode made a pretty good job fleshing out fuecoco´s personality and establishing its connection to Roy.

Let me say something that is an unpopular opinion here, since Roy mentioned that his grandpa has told him stories of an 'ancient trainer' who used to travel regions and befriended Pokémon, this line could easily be referring to Ash and it also somewhat confirms that Pokémon the Series: Horizons takes place in the same universe as OG, AG, DP, XY and XY&Z are, and that the new series also takes place years into the future, and that if Ash is to return, he, Serena, Misty and the others could very well return as young adults or even as adults, who have families, or this line could easily refer to AZ from XY&Z, and don't come hear telling me what one of the producers of The Pokémon Company said, I know what he said, and he didn't mean it that Ash was going to stay 10 years old in the anime forever
It probably AZ or someone way older than ash because of the use of Ancient.
@StrawberryStar I would say that Horizons at best is set 8 years after Journeys concluded and not much
I like Roy. I think Roy brings a type of positive cheer that Liko is lacking. While Liko struggles with confidence, Roy is outgoing and shows how he can bring out the confidence in others by being positive with them, with how he got Fuecoco to sing along with him.
Combined with Friede's battle prowess with his Pikachu, and the kind of synchronicity that Liko has with Sprigatito, it goes to show that the anime is trying to divide the major characteristics of Ash into other characters in order to help make a worthy succession for Ash.
I quite enjoyed Roy. He’s nothing that big but there’s a chance he can grow. I can see Liko and Roy growing a relationship for each other.
I know liko and roy will be close!

I can’t disagree more. I love this episode. I love Roy and his goal. What’s wrong traveling around the world meeting new Pokemon and friends? I don’t get what wrong with this episode or Roy. So what Roy like Ash. What wrong with that? Everyone loves Ash. At least he isn’t like Goh. I think it pretty normal episode of Pokemon. I can’t wait for Roy to officially be part of the group. I saw nothing wrong with episode. It’s only episode 4 and not just that, it’s a new story with new characters. It’s no longer Ash’s story. It about different characters. Stop comparing it to the old Pokemon. Sure I’m tired of Kanto too but at least we somewhere different. I never seen that Roy’s island before. Also people forgot, Pokemon is a kids show. It’s target audience is for kids that maybe never saw Ash and his adventure. Was it perfect episode, no but I seen worst. I think Roy introduction was great.

Roy's personality almost reminds me of the partner in Mystery Dungeon Sky. Energetic, wants to explore, has a mysterious object that was found on the beach.

Honestly, I feel like the partner is closer to Liko than they are to Roy, especially due to how shy they are
I mean.. If you had high expectations, like some bombastic intro with fantastic battling, then I can see how you'd be let down.
The only reason people were talking about Liko, is because they were fixated on her having to be Ash's daughter. Even now, people are still holding out on her being related to Ash.
Seems like you're still having that as well. Comparing Roy to Ash and all. I'm just going out on a limb and saying that not many fans go back and revisit the first episodes of the previous Pokemon series. Episode 1 of AG, DP, and SM all introduced a number of characters in a similar fashion. Heck, when episode 1 of BP started, it was all about Dawn, then we got a shot of Ash and Pikachu at the end, arriving in Sinnoh.
I can understand the let down, honestly. However, is it the "weak" introduction itself or is it that you had higher expectations as to how he'd be introduced?
Atm, out of all the poketubers i watch, you're the only one I've seen be disappointed with Roy. Nothing wrong with it, except you're still hung up on the Ash comparrisons. Roy just wants to venture out and explore the world and its treasures. He wants to battle legendary Pokemon. Tbh, this seems more of a hint to Legends Arceus than it does to Ash.
I feel that this episode was a proper introduction to Roy and Fuecoco. Also, I’m interested in learning why Roy’s ancient Poke Ball and Liko’s pendant started to glow when both Roy and Liko were approaching each other. I’d give this episode a 9/10.
I see big potential with roy and i dont think we should judge already with first episode about him. xD
Well i really hope he can travel with liko and not seperate, to know more about him rather than they make both of the main heroes seperate.
But overall i really beginn to LOVE this series already, i really hope they continue like that. ^^

I am getting vibes that Roy's goal of finding ancient treasure and battling the legends will play out a series of Indiana Jones style arcs with the character exploring ancient ruins. I'm all for that. If this is true then I don't know what people are complaining about.
Honestly, Roy was already fighting an uphill battle in the eyes of fans BEFORE THE SHOW EVEN STARTED. 😅People didn't like his design when he was first shown, maybe warmed up to that after the second+ showing(s). And Liko had 3 whole episodes to herself and a LOT happened in just those three episodes. Combine that with how light this episode was in comparison and... yeah, I can see why people don't like Roy based off of this.

@@YuseiTheSynchroHero I honestly think that people dislike Roy bc Liko stole the spotlight due to 1. being a girl. (People were interested in having a female main lead for the first time.) 2. Liko has a hair clip resembling the logo on ash's hat. This made her just recognizable sparking interest in her. 3. The hairclip gave Liko even more attention by sparking theories that she may be ash's daughter. 4. Liko was placed in front of Roy in the initial reveal poster indirectly telling us to focus on her more. This does NOT mean that Liko doesn't have good characteristics on her own merit bc she does. She is a good character, but circumstances did initially inflate her popularity on the internet before she was even introduced. The hair clip is VERY IMPORTANT bc it gave us a sense of familiarity to ash when we were hit with the heartbreaking news that ash was leaving. This familiar hairclip caused fans to project the good feeling they have for ash onto Liko. Be honest, do you think she would have been received so well on first sight without the hairclip? I love Liko, but I am willing to acknowledge my own bias. I liked Liko on first sight bc she was female AND had the hairclip. This made her different from ash with just enough familiarity to make me interested in the character.
Roy will hopefully become a massively popular character of what time we just got to get more used to him like we got used to liko so let's see what happens in the next episode 10/10

I actually liked this introduction of Roy. I do understand why people might be uninterested in him because of his similarities with Ash, but I think it will be nice to see his bubbly personality in contrast with Liko’s more reserved and shy one. I think it’ll be an interesting duo. Also, I think we should give Roy more time😭
A non main-topic point of the episode that I quite enjoyed was how it turns out Rotom Smartphone can easily reconfigure and turn into a Rotom iPad

When I was watching this episode.. I did notice one similarity which struck out to me.
Roy rescued Fuecoco from falling like how Liko also rescued Spirgatito from falling in Episode 1. Because of those two events, the starters became closer to the main protagonists.
Coincidence? Probably yes.. but, it is such a cool little detail that I won't turn a blind eye on it.
I liked the introduction of Roy. I think he has potential and that him and liko will make a great team :)
I'm mega excited about Roy.
I can't wait to see more of roy and his character grow.

Well, I finally watched ep 4 and it was good. It’s nice to see the Liko and Sprigatito going on adventure around even though they’re still in Kanto, but that okay they need to repair the ship. Even though they worked on it last episode and didn’t notice that their is a Tracker Device from the Explorers. Liko is starting to feel like a little like Pokémon Trainer, but she still has a lot to learn. We finally got to meet Roy and he okay so far! It’s little annoying that he’s doing school to, but he’s going on a Pokémon Journey soon so we got that to look forward too! I’m really liked Fuecoco and Roy bonding. I’m looking forward to seeing them becoming closer. Plus the mysteries Pokéball he has has peaked my interest. I think Roy want find Treasure and solving mysteries of Pokémon is a great dream. I enjoyed Liko and Roy meeting for the first time. Liko’s Pendant and Roy’s Pokéball glow is very interesting. Also were did Frede learn to move like that? Did he learn to be a Ninja at some point in his life? He seem to be more like a Pokémon Champion or Warrior then a Professor! I sure we’ll learn more about him as the series goes on. The Explorers look like they got a plan to seal the Pendant. This episode may not as exciting as the last episodes, but it was nice to get a Calm episode. Although Something big is going to go down in Episode 5 and the rest of Horizon series. Pokemon Horizon is doing good and I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures and mysteries we’ll see next.
More important: Why does he have W-Lan in a FOREST?
I actually liked Roys introduction, I think his personality compliments Liko’s. Can he been seen as a parallel to Ash? Sure, but so can any high energy trainer who loves Pokemon and traveling. Roys goal seems to be more along the lines of an archeologist which I think is cool, and maybe these Pokémon of legends he’s talking about are actually paradox Pokémon? They need to work those into the story some how and Roy can be a good way to do it.
Liko isn't really ditching school. She kind of doesn't have a choice but to do it online since Amethio and the Explorers will attack her again, and it's better to keep them away from the other young trainers and the school itself than to go back and risk it AGAIN.
Don't say there's an interaction between Liko and Roy expressing the same opinion simultaneously could be a direct reference how Ash and Korrina did
Alright, alright, alriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. I see people don't like Roy (I prefer Liko overall, but I'm not about to dunk on him based on ONE episode. Especially because Episode 5 continues on from this one). Others are like "ROY IS OUR BOY" (shoutout to Pokeferlax lol. Btw, glad he got his channel back to normal). Anyways, time for my personal thoughts and how _I_ feel about it. HERE. WE. GO:
◽LUDLOW JUMPSCARE threw me off. I guess he had stuff to say this time around. From the looks of it, he definitely appears to be the Quaxly owner (but is he actually Nidothing? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm guess we'll find out soon)
◽Fuecoco was flat out adorable, singing like a bird. lmao. I wonder what _THAT_ could meaaaaaaaaaaaan. 😏😏🐊I love how tightly knit Roy and the Fuecoco are already, even singing together. It really is the small stuff sometimes that gets ya.
◽Guess Orla didn't catch the gas leakage. 👁👄👁 (Also, she can't knit very well. Guess that's something to note for later)
◽Roy taking online classes? Lol. That actually surprised me tbh. He doesn't strike me as someone who would actually attend school.
◽Wouldn't be a episode in the Kanto region if we didn't have a wild Pokemon chase scene. Ash Ketchum be liek: _First time?_

◽Can I just take a moment to talk about the fact that Friede can SCMOOOOOVE?! Like hot damn, the guy can MOVE. The way he maneuvered around the string shot spam to get the bug type Pokemon trapped in their own web was crazy. But he was still the nice guy in the end, giving them all a Lum (?) Berry to feed on and Liko & Roy went to get more berries to make up for what Fuecoco ate up all of. (Damn, he may be cute but he's quite the troublemaker
◽I'm not all that concerned about Roy's goal tbh. Ash was never really a... treasure hunting guy (at least not unless the plot demanded that for specific reasons) but it seems like Roy's Grandpa is/was and he wants to follow suit with that (and that wouldn't conflict at ALL with the goals of Liko and the Rising Volt Tacklers as that's part of them mission statement after all)
◽Honestly, I was like everyone else when they _first_ saw Roy: I didn't like his design at ALL in the first teaser. He looked... _off_ but after the second teaser onward, I think he looked better than he did the first time (the angle on the first teaser picture didn't help any).
◽I feel like Roy is REALLY unfairly compared to Ash (and even Goh? Cuz... he's good at throwing rocks I guess???) when really... we have one episode so far and unlike Liko, who got three episodes specifically around her at the beginning (being at the school, being attacked by the Explorers, being rescued by the RVT, losing her Sprigattito, and having to get it back), Roy literally was gonna fight an uphill battle NO MATTER WHAT. And that's sad because I actually like him more than I expected to tbh.
◽This episode was certainly much lighter than the last three episodes but... considering just what was going on at the time, I don't mind a single episode being a lighter one before we get back into the action again! Looks like in next week's episode, the Explorers are going on the offensive and attacking the Rising Volt Tacklers to get Liko and her pendant. I wonder if they know about the Pokeball too or if that's something they'll notice (maybe they see the two items glowing and they connect the dots).
◽BONUS: I think Liko and Roy will be great together (I dunno how if I'd "ship" them) and surprise us with their synergy. What little we did get in this episode was nice to see!

I also wasn’t a big fan of roy’s introduction mostly because it didn’t bring too much to the table (although we got a bit spoiled getting 3 banger episodes in a row). I find Roy’s interest in exploring and his ancient pokeball cool but I feel he needs more character development before I truly like him (also I prefer the sprigatito evolution line more than the fuecoco evolution line so that also kinda impacted my opinion). I would give this episode a solid 7.5/10
I mean.. He hasn't done anything yet 😂😂. To say his character sucks off of one episode is jumping the gun and using your preference of starter as a base to judge a character is.. Like, what 💁🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️?
@@travisgames6608 I literally said “I feel he needs more character development before I truly like him”, I never said I dislike his character. I am mostly saying that his character didn’t bring that much this episode and that I want to see some expansion on his character. Also why is my preference on the starter mean anything to others as I just find more interest in grass cat than fire croc 🤷♂️. I didn’t mean that fuecoco impacted my opinion on Roy, I meant that it had an impact on the episode rating for me

Roy's Ancient PokeBall is what it's called but I think that this Ancient PokeBall is for catching the Ancient Paradox Pokemon and maybe the Future PokeBall are the Beast Balls which you can catch the Future Paradox Pokémon with the Beast Balls!?
It's just a Theory of mine but Roy's Ancient PokeBall could actually catch either Great Tusks and Iron Treads.

Exploration is an amazing goal for a pokemon protagonists 🤔 imagine all the cool places that can be explored in the pokemon universe maybe even further look into old pokemon lications 😳 its understandavle that his introduction episode wasnt what fans expected. I still hope that further on he gets flesh out more and get better development.
Nah man, Roy started off STRONG. Feels like he’s authentic as a budding trainer with many goals until he finds the right one for him. If anything he feels like a manga protag through and through.

Roy's Character isn't just like Ash he is also a mixture of Iris as well which could explain why certain people don't like his character very much!

again liko is nice but completly my opinion, if I wanted Koharu 2.0, or lily 2.0, Liko seems like that archetype. the quite thoughtful studius girl that gets dragged along by the spunky character. Frankly I don't see liko as the type to challange gyms or battle in the league (only time will tell). Now if Liko were more like a SV Nemona, I could see your argument and I will happily be proven wrong.
This episode was so well constructed. I don't know why you're stating your opinion as if it's a fact because so far everyone has had a very positive opinion of Roy. We know nothing of Roy and his introduction was anything but generic.
His design is very unique and the idea of a character who has been completely isolated from the tools to get Pokemon interesting concept. Unlike Ash who actually had every tool in his arsenal (eg: THE GREATEST FUCKING POKEMON PROFESSOR'S LABORATORY IN HIS TOWN) Roy has nothing. Heck, there aren't even any trainers in his island. Unlike Ash who always had a go-getter and rash attitude Roy is more joyful but sombre that he can't follow his dreams because of his current situation. Roy is also shown to be extremely street smart.
A generic introduction would have been if Roy woke up from his bed yelled "WOW I AM TEN YEARS OLD NOW TIME TO GET A POKEMON", ran to some professor's lab and got a Pokemon. This worked for Ash because he was the first main character but it would never work anymore since everyone is bored of the gimmick.
The entire fandom is only talking about Liko is because this is the first time a major show like this has such a solid female character and well, ROY WASN'T EVEN INTRODUCED YET??? I don't even know how you immediately marked him off as generic in a single episode.
Aww what a shame, Roy is so cute, I really like him.
I also didn't think that his goal was that generic, since I thought He wanted to Encounter legendary Pokémon, and it isn't as undefined as a Pokémon master, but what do I know.
I also really like how He was training to Catch Pokémon with the Rock.

I did love the episode but I wished they put way more effort and creativity into Roy’s character in which don’t get me wrong because while I like him, you definitely made a great point mainly because by the first trailer for Pokémon Horizons, Liko was way more favorable by many #anipoke fans in comparison to Roy unfortunately and it’s definitely too generic in which direction on how they will implement and approach his character, it could sadly be a while for people warming up to him; I understand the overall disappointment that you felt regarding episode four in which is perfectly understandable but at least, Fuecoco was expectionally adorable!!! 🙂👌🏻

I don't mind Roy so far, but yeah, they could definitely have put more effort into making him interesting. But, being at high risk of becoming the Gou of this series, I'll give him some points for re-establishing that you need to battle pokemon to catch them... at least in theory so far. But yeah, there's really not much more to say..
To be fair, as endearing and not-generic as Liko is, she also still has a long way to go to be come a good character, so Roy still has every chance to redeem the lacking first impression as well... but so far he'll probably end up like Ash, with a weird stone-throw habit.
(Sidenote: I found the depiction of the online-class a neat bit of worldbuilding.)
But I still have absolutely zero interest in the whole adventure-plot, and the fact that the Airship happens to crash-land on an island where a McGuffin that's connected to Liko's McGuffin happens to be is so ridiculously unlikely that it already kills my immersion in it.

Given that it was a character introduction for it to be overall trope-y and generic was fine with me. The focus was really on the introduction itself which was...fine. They did tie it into the overall plot and drew the connection people were looking for as far as Liko and Roy's signature items.
I am, however, on the "Why Roy?" train and the only serious answer I can really come up with is that they were hedging their bets. If people didn't like Liko - who is clearly quite different from Ash - they wanted to have an Ash-ish character on hand to try and carry interest. In order to further hedge it, they are (or seem to be) using a dual protagonist model that just didn't work in JN. Originally, I thought the problem was that it was Ash specifically sharing the spotlight, but I think the truth is that it's hard to get invested in two MCs when you're trying to put together a series of twenty-ish minute episodes like Pokemon.
Regardless, I'm still very positive about Horizons. I think they've made a good choice to string an actual plot together from the word go and keep it up from episode to episode (which hopefully won't just fall off a cliff). I really like Liko as a character too - I think she's the change of pace that the anime desperately needed after twenty-five years of Ash. I just hope that if they are using a dual protagonist model that they take a primary/secondary approach where they give Liko most of the focus rather than putting she and Roy on equal footing.

I understand, When I first saw him I thought his design was honestly lazy, and why is he also from Kanto after we just finished with Ash?! If he's from an island why not make him be from hoenn or Alola or heck if like to look for treasure why isn't he also from Paleda. This is why the all over the world concept doesn't work because they barely do anything cool with and shaft the new regions To make him at least a bit unique how about a special band, No vest and a backwards cap. honestly the series probably would've been better if it was just liko.

Seems the writers were overconfident about the series becoming too great after 3 decent to good episodes and having great ratings from the anipoke. That's why if I have time to continue reviewing these episodes,I won't give any numerical ratings for every episodes anymore...just one overall rating after 3 years or so. Ratings will just give pressure or "blindness" to the writers. Without these numerical ratings,writers will be "doubtful" if the episodes they are making are good or bad...so to be in their safe side,they will ALWAYS make their best in every episode.
These episodes were most likely written weeks if not months in advance. There's no way the rating of the first three episodes affected this episode in any ways.
Considering these episodes were made about a year ago.. I doubt any ratings that are given atm will affect how they feel 😂😂. Most of the time animated shows are produced about six months to a year in advance, we have about six months worth of material that isn't affected.
I know that they probably did these first 3 or 5 or so episodes during the time they release the very first preview of Pokémon Horizons. But for sure they didn’t put some ideas for the first 100 episodes in advance,let alone beyond that. So these numerical ratings anipoke are providing are their guides if they still want to ignite their passion in giving more great episodes in the far future. If they lose interest in providing great episodes in the far future,they will be pressured or won’t give much effort in their work. Remember: pokémon anime is still EPISODAL unless further notice…so that means they tend to provide an episode out of the blue like unnecessary fillers without any further plans or analysis of what they did or what happened to the previous plot. We rate the anime per episode which really encourages the writers to make an episodal-heavy anime. I don’t mean these poketubers needs to stop giving numerical ratings. I just providing a warning to some “worries” just like Long did here. But if they didn’t properly solve these worries,these worries becomes a negative impact to the anime. It’s just like sin and temptation.

Ash was never the main appeal of the show, his companions has always been better characters than him. Especially after he stopped getting character development after Sinnoh. If it wasn't for characters like Brock, Misty, Dawn and Serena people would not care about the show nearly as much.
