  • A very simple cure for mottling or streaks in metallic paint is a mist coat or a drop coat and this short video explains very easily how to apply it.

    My auto body instructor always taught us that if you have the paint mixed right and the gun set up right you could spray a hood silver metallic ...and then spray a "x" across the hood and you would never see it. And he demonstrated this...successfully.

      What kind of paint? Laquer?

    • @markanthony3275
      @markanthony3275 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@jostrander71 No...acrylic "animal" ( acrylic enamel). However, the principle remains the same...paint mixed right, gun set up right, technique right = no mottling or striping. The problems that I see today include spraying with a crappy compressor that won't put out enough cfm @ 60 psi. ( should be at least 14 cfm @ 60 psi....5 hp. compressor minimum). Add to the crappy compressor a crappy cheap spray gun with too small a spray pattern and the wrong needle size. And on top of that a bad booth with poor lighting and bad technique. It will all add up to failure. If I had to go back and spray cars again, this time I would go with a 2qt pressure pot /HVLP spray gun. That way I would have no refilling the gun part way through a coat. Also, because the gun is small in size, being separated from the paint pot, there is much less fatigue in maintaining a true perpendicular orientation to large surfaces like a roof or a hood.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  2 месяца назад +1

      Yes - It's a judgement call. If the mist coat just sinks right in and the mottling stays the same or gets worse, it needs to be dryer. You want it dry enough for the flakes stay put but wet enough to flow out if you are spraying single stage. Base coat can be sprayed on the dry side - all coats. The clear will be sprayed wet though :)

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  11 месяцев назад

      I like upping the pressure. Think of crop dusting or distributing seed evenly - you want to sort of blast it out there. So.... up the pressure, move back a bit and crop dust. For me, it has always worked. You have to do it at the right time though - just when the paint has dried a bit and can take the dry spray yet be wet enough to lay down.

  • @jonathansmith875
    @jonathansmith875 2 года назад

    Won’t it go on dry and rough if you turn the pressure up as to turning it down? That’s the result I’ve been having anyways. Thanks!

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  2 года назад

      Don't worry about getting the base coat wet. Let that base coat dry for about an hour - then spray two coats of clear - the first is a medium/wet coat - the second with be wet to the point of running and it will lay out nice and flat. With single stage - on the last coat if you have any mottling go around twice - the second time is your mist coat. Let it tack up a bit if the mist coat isn't helping - then try again. Let me know if you have any more ?s - Jerry

      It is applied right after the last coat. There is a small window of time in which it will melt in nicely yet the metallic flakes stand up and stay positioned so that you get no mottling. If you use a drop coat too early it will continue to mottle or look splotchy - if you use a drop coat too late it will result in dry spray or orange peel.

    • @LakesideAutobody
      @LakesideAutobody  3 года назад

      Excellent question. I cheated on this one. This is a no no but I ran a piece of tape right on the crown of the body line. After the paint dried I lightly knocked the edge down with a piece of 1200 grit wet sand paper and then hand rubbed it. The paint matched very well so I got away with it. Otherwise I would have had to paint that whole section over the windows all the way to the front. Dealership body shops would do this but it costs more money of course.

    I'm amazed that your using a $60 gun in a professional setting. I've thrown better guns than that SATA copy you're using into the garbage can. Makes me wonder why I've spent $15,000 for top of the line professional guns. Current favorites are the Iwata Supernova LS400 for base and the WS400 for clear.

      @@Imwright720 Well, I own about 50 spray guns (I'm a collector) and that's a SATA 92 knock-off. Easy to tell as the fan adjustment is on the left side of the gun (standard SATA position) and the knock-offs have a black band behind the aircap as the gun in the video does. Some of these knock offs are very high quality. For example Harbor Freight's new Black Widow gun, which they sell for close to $200, is a very good SATA 5000 knock-off and sprays great. My problem with the Black Widow is that HF doesn't sell rebuild kits for them and that's crazy for a $200 gun. I rebuild my front line guns, the ones I use all the time, once every three years. I'm not throwing out an Iwata Supernova or a SATA 5500X because I can't find a rebuild kit for it. Spray guns have parts that ware out due to normal wear and tear. It's imperative to be able to get parts for them especially when a SATA digital 5500X sells for $900.

      First it's not the gun, the paint, mixture or anything else. Metallic flakes are just that flakes - sometimes they sink down, stand on end, lay flat, sink to the bottom, lay on top -etc. If you spread grass seed do you drop a hand full on the ground? No. You throw it up it the air to let it do it's thing and spread out even. That's the drop coat or mist coat. Happy Holidays

      There is a window in which you can re-coat. Sometime this is stated on the can. The rule of thumb is usually the same day, you can re-coat w/o doing anything to it. If it's the next day, I would scuff it with these pads - it doesn't take too long. If you think you have dust you might as well wet sand it with 400 or higher.

      You can do a drop coat or a mist coat with out changing the air pressure too if you prefer that. Some folks even do a drop coat using lower pressure - You have to find what works for your individual style of painting. Example: I use a sharper pattern and move fast where as another guy might use a wide open fan and move slow. Everyone paints a little different so.... it will be trial and error to find what works for you.

      If you spray the whole car - on the last coat don't even leave the booth (or garage). When you have gotten around the car where you began see if the paint is wet but tacky then go ahead with the dust coat. if it's a bit dry try reducing the paint so it melts in a bit more. If it's hot out you're going to have to mist coat areas as you go around the car. i.e. spray the hood mist the hood - spray the fender mist the fender etc. Gotta try all kinds of strategies as every situation is different and you'll have to adjust on the fly.
