  • These are some unfortunate driving incidents involving teens. In 2015, a terrified teen had to call 911 after her brakes stopped working. In 2018, a teenager learning to drive hit the gas instead of the brake and slammed right into their garage door. In 2022, a North Carolina teen named Marleigh got her license, and a week later, a train totaled her car. Inside Edition Digital’s Andrea Swindall has more.

FYI if your gas pedal ever gets stuck you should put your car in neutral and then just stop the car like you normally would. Don't shut off the engine because that'll lock your steering wheel. Don't pull the handbrake because you'll spin out. If the car is stuck in gear then you might have to shut off the engine but make sure you're not on a curve when you do it. Edit: if you shut off the engine you'll lose power steering but the wheel won't lock unless you turn the key all the way back. It'll be harder to steer but it's doable. I still recommend putting it in neutral as a first option.

Regardless of transmission, a car cannot accelerate if the transmission or "gearbox" is disengaged from the engine. This mean clutch in, and shift to neutral. Or shift your automatic to N. The engine may continue to rev but it won't go anywhere. Press brakes to slow, apply emergency brake gently to bring you to a stop and hold you there. Turn off ignition. If you can't(such as key broke)but can safely access the engine after stopping, cover the air intake filter until the car stalls.

WOW! This is such a scary situation that happened to me as a teenager as well! I was driving down a busy road after an oil change and had to slow down while approaching a slower moving vehicle ahead but as I pressed on the brake pedal my car started ACCELERATING!! I had my 10 month old son in the rear and his father in the passenger seat and when I suddenly became scared and yelled out, "The car won't stop!" My cowardly boyfriend jumped from the moving vehicle and left me to myself to figure something out....QUICK! I started honking the horn, threw on the emergency lights and started pumping the brakes...nothing...pressed ever so lightly on the gas pedal...again, nothing! I was literally just a few yards away from the vehicle in front of me when luckily everything somehow aligned with one another and I was finally able to slow down and come to a complete stop! I was terrified for my baby and myself but thanking the Lord for our safety! Unfortunately, no mechanic was ever able to diagnose the problem but needless to say, I never drove that car again and I left my boyfriend right where he had jumped out....on the curb!

The only possible way a driver could experience "brake loss" is if they were riding the brake & gas simultaneously (a foot pressing on each pedal).
This will eventually boil the brake fluid, turning it "bubbly" and unable to transmit braking force though the hydraulic brake lines.
This is why the right foot is for gas & brake, and the left foot should never be used on those pedals (only for clutch pedal on manual transmission cars).

Had a driving mishap myself about 9 years ago, when I was still learning to drive. My mom and I had just gone to the store to get groceries, and we planned to make a quick stop at the local wine store before heading home. So I was driving, my mom was in the seat next to me, and I'd just pulled out of the grocery store parking lot. Then we started heading in the direction of the wine store, and my mom said to me, "Be sure to turn left." Now I thought she meant the left that was coming up at the next light - but what she ACTUALLY meant was that she wanted me to turn left at... well... the turn that was RIGHT NEXT TO ME. So she started freaking out like, "Turn left... turn left! TURN LEFT!" So her panicking caused ME to panic, and I made the turn at the very last millisecond - only to go over the curb and bump into a tree! No real damage was done, and neither of us were truly hurt, but there was a noticeable dent in the front. We got that fixed later on, of course.
Now get this.... Mom decided to revisit that spot a few days later, to see if any damage had been done to the tree I'd bumped into. Well... during her investigation, she discovered that there were *tire tracks* in the grass. Which meant that, in my moment of panic in trying to stop the car, I'd actually been hitting the GAS PEDAL instead of the brake pedal, which I should've used to stop myself! We had a laugh about it, of course, but... you know... I wouldn't care to go through that again!
