Hey folks! In this video I restored an very unique 2 speed Hand Drill! I found this unique piece in a barn, so it was full of grease and dirt. After a good wash of every part, i restored every part step by step: I started with sandblasting the main body, doing some metal works like filing and sanding, after that i put on some body filler and primer, before i painted it in RAL 9005 Deep Black. After that i went for the gears. While sandblasting them, the original color showed up: it was red. So i cleaned and polished the metal and repainted them with red Hammerite paint. Some smaller parts were cold blued, the shafts got just cleaned because of their fitment. Last step was making a new crank and new handles. I found an old crank in my shop and modified it to fit on my unique Chain Driven Hand Drill. The drill chuck at the end was bought, too much effort to make a new one ;-)
Now this beauty works wonderful again.
I hope you have fun with the video! If you have any questions on the used tools, materials or the processes, write it in the comment section - i´ll try to answer as soon as possible!

Hey folks, have fun with the video! Like and subscribe if you like my work! 🙂
I am curious about the cold-bluing. You blued some parts, but not all of the bare metal parts. Would bluing help those other exposed and unexpired areas? Perhaps I missed something.
Ecxellent Job ……for your eyes only DON,T TOUCH!!!
The red is a nice touch!
I am curious why you cleaned this with uranium? Is there a particular purpose? Thank you for sharing your fantastic restorations. 💖
Looks like the drill that I used about 65 years ago to "accidentally" drill holes in my parents' kitchen floor. Really good work; I enjoy your videos.
Haha, thanks LJ!
That truly made me laugh.
_accidentally" drill holes in my parents' kitchen floor_ - I put this in the category of work experience. You have to learn somehow. A kitchen floor seems just as good a place as any, after watching your Dad use the drill.
In the 1950s my young cousin watched his Dad paint a room flat white then used black gloss paint on the fireplace iron. When my uncle finished the room and went for a cuppa, my cousin decided to do the same as his Dad and painted all the white walls and window glass, in glossy black paint. I would have given anything to see the look on my uncle's face when he went back up stairs and saw my cousin's handiwork. It would have been priceless.

Hey, great work and video! Awesome!😁👍🛠️
I wonder how many of these types of channels are just Capt. Slow? All the pristine tools, all in proper cases, all still in proper shape, sorted by size...
My grandfather had a similar chain-driven hand drill. He had gotten it from a fellow who had worked at the boiler repair shops of a railroad until they retired all the steam locomotives. My grandfather used it to drill mortises in beams for barns and the similar.
Kitchen Troll I hope you still have your grandfather's chain driven drill. Having a tool from a train company is great. My dad was a machinist for H.K.Porter they used to make small train engines for mines and industrial needs. They also made tools. I collect and restore tools that they made at their Boston#Somerville Mass forging plant. I have over 20 tools made there.
Finally someone who submerges parts in blueing agent instead of brushing it on
I noticed that too, there was a different channel that mentioned its better if you brush it on.
im not sure if its true either way though.
The paint job for the main body looks amazing
My grandpa had one of the old drills like that. I used to play around with it.
Схожа дріль була у мого батька, та цю зробили просто красунею:)
Hooray!
Mister P is on fire!
Thank you so much, mein Freund!
Mostly welcome!
Nice "Uranium". Great job as usual
Haha, thanks Roland!
Love those big two-speed hand drills but that one is by far the coolest Ive seen even before you made it a stunning looking tool. Well done.
Hey, thank you very much! Iam glad you like my work!
Of all the restorers I watch, you so far are the only one that actually lets us see the welding with a filtered lens.
Worth its weight in gold !
PRETTY SWEET RESULTS!!!
Very useful when civilization collapses and there's no electricity
Joking apart, very nice work, thank you
Thanks Nawras!
Awesome restoration
Totally interesting. Needs to be in a power tool museum.
Hello cool resto like al
always congrats from 🇵🇹🇵🇹
Thanks my friend! Greetings from Germany!
A beautiful (in its own, unique, industrial way) tool, given a whole new lease of life as a piece of functioning art. Brilliant.
Thanks Gordon!
And the gloss level you got in the paint! Great preparation - and taught me a top technique for clear coat! Thank you
You’re welcome Lance! The sticky coat needs 5-10 minutes to get sticky, after that the thick coat will be wonderful! 🙂
Now THAT’S a beauty!
😍
I love Hammerite paint. Love the hammered effect. Lol. Nice job. 👍👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
Thanks Cathy!
Thanks for dimming the video when you weld! I really appreciate that watching your videos at night, soo bright on the eyes when people dont haha 😃
Brilliant restoration friend, have a nice day !!!.
Thanks a lot Brian, you too!
Very good👍👍
Thanks mate!
I bet that drill wore out many a man back in the day. It turned out Beautiful..
I like how there is a complete restoration industry and the videos are done as if there is a formula that everybody agreed on, no matter where they are from. Germany/France/Japan etc.
Can you think of a different way to do it?
That is f******g cool the red pops against the black sweet thanks for posting
Thanks Peter, iam glad you like it!
One of the best channels of restoration on RUclips. Very good skills and knowledge. A beautiful work on this piece, congrats !
Hey, thank you so much!
@@misterpatina btw why did you used uranium? isn t it dangerous.
نسأل الله العلي العظيم ان ينصر اخواننا في فلسطين
I would love to see you restore a old fishing reel. The Mitchell 300.
That was a Race Car paint job brother, good stuff!
Thanks man, iam glad you enjoyed!
loving your videos!
Iam glad you like it! 🙂
I'm finally glad that somebody realises that wet and dry sandpaper needs to be soaked before use.
Thanks Andy! I still remember the wet sanding bucket when learning my job 😄
@@misterpatina My first job in 1975 was in a CV paint shop..Every cab and van was finished is primer at the factory, that looked like it had be applied with a hose pipe. We had to sand everything by hand before we could begin the painting.
This is certainly not your best restoration, but i always enjoying watching your videos!
...lookin' good, nice work, stay safe...
Thanks Bob, you too!
I 'm not principled about you . But you are a good master and you are doing a good job . I 'm from Russia ! All the best to us all !!!
Such a cool thing 😎
Thanks man!
I have been around for 70+ years, many of which have been connected with engineering of one sort or another. But I have NEVER seen a chain driven 'gut buster' as we called them. So extra thanks for this informative restoration, which ended with an excellent result.
Hey Willie, thank you so much! Iam glad I could show you something new :-)
Greets from Germany!
She is definitely a beauty. She just needs a lot of TLC.
TLC?
@@misterpatina, Tender Loving Care. It's what you do.
Thank You!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
You are certainly the best aerosol spray painter that I've seen. That is beautiful. Nice job!

Wow! Big, beefy and badass!
Haha, thanks!
Good working
I love your channel Mr. Patina.
Thanks!
I'm glad that you have changed the crank as the first one wasn't really good
Lol, it reminds me of the old egg beaters we used back in the day when i was a kid.
Yeah or the ones for whipped cream :-D
Magnificent renovation of that awesome hand drill! Love how you made that custom crank, turned out great, thanks for sharing! ✌🏻
Thanks my friend!
As always, perfect restoration. I will watch it again and again... 😍

What a beauty! I had similar one but with a housing, Polish production. I want to restore it one day...
...do it! :-)
would really like to see you use a laser cleaning rust some day
nice job
Thanks Richard!
Well... You know what they say.... A grinder and pain makes me the welder I ain't.
my grandfather had one of these, they were horrible. Cool restoration
You have created another piece of industrial jewelry. Nice work!
'Industrial jewelry', haha, thanks - thats a good one :-)
That was very satisfying to watch. Thank you.
However, as a pedantic Englishman, I must point out:
"Loose" is the opposite of "tight"
"Lose" is the opposite of "find"
A common mistake, often by native english speakers!
Thank you so much James! Iam German ;-)
This man is a great craftsman, a great artist, and a great machinist. I really enjoy these videos.
Thanks Wayne!
love your videos.
thanks for sharing it
i have one thing to say in this one
i think that for adjust the bearing you need adjust the balls track by the thread and then fix the balls track by the screw in the side of the body drill.
i dont know if you made that, but i want to said it.
thanks again.
Perfect as always 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks! 🙂👍
Came over the my mechanics channel good work!
Thanks! 🙂
Perfect restoration
Good work sir

With our coming energy shortages I think hand tools will be soon worth their weight in gold.

You turn that thing into a piece of art. Very nice.
Thanks Terri!
Nice job!
Thanks!
Iv had a very stressful few days. Watching this video just melted it away brother! Thank you!
Hey myke, iam glad i could help ;-)
@@misterpatina seriously though something about your process is so calming. I especially like when you do old tools like this. Don’t get me wrong all your restorations are fantastic. the tool restorations are different for some reason. Thanks for the perfectly timed upload!
@@mykeg2401 thanks man! I try to upload every 4 weeks 😉
I wouldn't use this but frame it as it is more a work of art.
Nice job sir!
Thanks Alan!
Beautiful job.
I didn't know that. 11:31 😊 Is that because dampness can't collect on a polished surface? Rather than high or low speed, I think of it as low and high torque. The speed is subject to the material being drilled. I've never seen a chain-driven hand drill in Australia. One thing I expected to see was a bicycle-style chain coupler, rather than a nut and screw. Beautiful restoration, Mate. That really was a top effort. It has a paint job better than a Ferrari.
I'm going to subscribe just to see more awesome restorations.
Thanks!
