I was searching for some new projects, when my friend 'my mechanics' called me and said, that he has an old 'Gressel' Vise for me. So i drove to his shop, took the vise, drank a cold one and drove back to Frankfurt to restore it. This beast was super stuck, i was glad that 'my mechanics' gave me his pressing tool to disassemble this vise. After removing all of the rust off the vise, i gave it a nearly matching colour dark grey. The crank was in a very good condition, so i just sandblasted and cold blued it. The dove was just smoothened, since i didnt want to destroy the fitment. Same thing with the jaws - everything was built to fit, so I just refurbished the fitment. I hope you guys enjoy my work, please consider subscribing :-)

    True facts about My Mechanics:
    1) He, being a machinery whisperer, has a voice no human being can hear - what we heard in the intro is the accurate rendition of his voice if we could hear him.
    2) My Mechanics' tears can be used as cold bluing liquid - they are hard to get though. The only occasion to collect them is when My Mechanics realise he left some sharp edges on his work.
    3) Even though My Mechanics lives in Switzerland, his house is located on the beach near the ocean.
    4) My Mechanics can turn tap water into a powerful degreaser with sheer power of will, but he rarely does it, as he doesn't want to show off.

    Wonderful!
It seems to me that My Mechanics and Mr. Patina have a different restoration philosophy: Mr. Patina is for "I want to turn back time and have this object exactly as made by the original manufacturer", while My Mechanics is for "I want this object as the original producer should have made it, if he was professional enough".
    I admire both of them.

I'm beginning to think that Gressel is the last word in quality vises. Seriously, these vises take severe beatings and still come out looking brand new once restored, even with severe damage. I want a Gressel Vise.

To paint raised lettering quicker and easier, use a piece of cloth, grip it tightly between your fingers so it makes a small round ball, wet it with paint, squeegee the excess and then use the cloth as a stamp. Works marvelously fast and as long as you are careful there is less danger of smearing paint.

for oddly shaped areas like on the vise, you can also use an eraser in the same way to apply paint. The benefit is it won't wrap around the raised lettering at all.
