I was lucky enough to see them live a couple of times before they disbanded. I'm in my mid 60's and, at one of their shows, there was a woman older than me sitting beside me. I asked why she was here and she pointed at John Haughm, the lead vocalist and said "That's my son". Precious moment.
My favorite lyrics here; "Here at the edge of this world, here I gaze at a pantheon of oak a citadel of stone. If this grand panorama before me, is what you call god, then god is not dead!"
"The White" EP is my favourite Agalloch album... It features some of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written in the history of mankind. Not even kidding...
"If this grand panorama before me is what you call God, then God is not dead." gives me shivers even after 100 or so listens. I am by no means a religious man but this song is truly a spiritual experience to me.
My interpretation of song is that it's about a man searching for god, and then realizing that god is everywhere in nature. It's basically a pantheistic message.
The Mantle is one of my favorite albums of all time. To me, this track is amazing, but it's just the beginning of an album of amazing compositions. They drew upon many influences from psychedelic and prog rock to doom metal, post-punk and neofolk. Their name is pronounced Aga-lock, by the way.
Jumping into Atmospheric Black Metal is always a good thing when you're ready for it, Agalloch also really brings the folk elements in their music, lovely stuff
"Like every hope I've ever had... Like every dream I've ever known... It washed away in a tide of longing, a longing for a better world From my will, my throat, to the river, and into the sea... Wash away... Fade away..."
This is my favorite song of all time. I was blown away the first time I heard it, and it's one of the few songs that give me that same feeling of awe years later. The Mantle is one of my favorite albums of all time too. I think of Agalloch as a post-metal band (they might repeat a riff or motif for a few minutes, but then develop it by adding new guitar parts and melodies), but they have some folk elements and atmospheric black metal in there too.
I've heard people call them "Grey Metal" , elements of black metal, but a little more melodic, instrumental, less harsh overall, but still with the key elements
Just thank you for decomposing Agalloch. This song is just perfect for a walk in the forest. Their whole catalog breathes the power of nature in every note.
This is my favorite band, followed by Alcest (another one you should totally do). Thank you so much for taking this never-ending journey with us. I would recommend Falling Snow from them as well
This album is the standard bearer for Cascadian Black Metal. Every song is a masterpiece. It really needs a beginning to end listen to fully appreciate. I love that Don Anderson posted here! It's great when the musicians join in.
Man, i love so much Agalloch. And i shed tears because when i hear beautiful acoustic passages i think of folk. And folk reminds me of the beautiful days of my youth in the middle of nature. It kinda hurts because where i'm now in life. Also reminds me how gorgeous the world can be.
Love this band, I always listen to the album Ashes Against the Grain when the first snowfall happens... something about just feels right, I recommend Not Unlike the Waves!
there is a difference in the general feeling of the song when you hear the first theme on the intro "Celebration for the Death Man" sets the whole mood for the piece.
I was waiting for an Agalloch reaction!! They're on my top 3 fav bands along with Opeth and The Mars Volta, I am saving this to watch later, can't wait to see what you have to say about them.
So glad you’re reviewing this one! I miss this band so much. You picked such a great first song to check out too. If you ever end up doing something else by them, I recommend the song Limbs
So stoked you finally got to Agalloch. They have so many options to review as their albums are just brilliant and I think you will enjoy the ride. Kudos to you for giving a sadly overlooked band, from a review perspective, a chance and I will humbly say you will be rewarded for your efforts. Cheers mate!
Geebz, you sure know how to take us on a musical journey! Happy Birthday Dan :) What a journey it's been. A masterpiece to listen to, while you paint your own. Thanks for introducing me to the rich musical world of metal. You are loved. P.S. Geebz4lyfe
I can't believe it! I can't believe it! I can't believe it! I NEVER thought you'd check this song out. WOW! The first time I heard this composition nearly 20 years ago it just sucked me in its world of magic and never let go. Few compositions are truly transcendent to me. This is one of them. Orion by Metallica and Echoes by Pink Floyd are two others.
Agalloch is one of my top 3 bands, and this is my favorite song of all time. The delight and intrigue I saw on your face as you listened to the song warmed my heart and reminded me of the joy I felt when I first heard this song. Thanks so much for checking it out and talking about it.
This is one of my favorite songs of all-time but not very many people are even aware it exists. I can't believe you chose it for one of your breakdowns! Wish I could give more than just one "thumbs up"
What I like the most about these videos is that they point my attention to elements that I didn't necessarily notice before, or that I enjoyed as part of the composition and never focused with as an individual part. This makes me experience the songs in a totally different way, when I can notice the small guitar details and notes or focus with the bass guitar, the right/ left placement of some sounds etc... It upgrades the songs to a higher level when you're able to hear and enjoy all those details!
"Here at the edge of this world Here I gaze at a pantheon of oak, a citadel of stone If this grand panorama before me is what you call God Then God is not dead" Is my favourite set of lyrics in this song. Possibly my favourite set of lyrics in black metal. And yes, i consider Agalloch to be black metal!
I was one of the likely many people who left a comment some time ago on another song you covered that more or less suggested you check out this song as well. Low and behold my surpeise, I go to your channel and see that you did. "If this grand panorama before me is what you call god, then god is not dead." Such a powerful lyric. Thank you for covering this, truly.
Nice! I was just thinking it's that time of year to binge some Agalloch albums and drink dark beer. I agree with others that Limbs and Falling Snow should be next for Agalloch. I also think they should be heard back to back as they are on the album. They just transition so well and complement each other. I can't listen to one without the other, but that'd be a 20 minute session.
I will never forget this channel. I have been a fan of Metal since I was in middle school back in the early 90s and I plan to continue to be a fan as long as I can. Thank you sir for decomposing these wonderful songs. There is a lot of emotion, history and art in Metal music and you bring a wonderful "behind the scenes" answer as to why I like these songs so much. Thanks to you sir I am finally learning why.
Beautiful song! If you dig back into Opeth's catalog the first two albums also feature a lot of this sort of acoustic black-metal style. Try the songs The Night and the Sighlent Water, The Apostle in Triumph, Black Rose Immortal, and To Bid You Farewell.
Back in the day, The Night and the Silent Water was my favourite Opeth track, but then I heard an interview with Mikael Akerfeldt after blackwater was released, were he said it was he least favourite tune. it broke my heart. That being said you are totally right about the sound comparison.
@@Tommydis It's his "least favourite" i think because it was written about his dying grandfather, and brings back too many bittersweet memories (much like Tool/Maynard and Wings For Marie). I was lucky enough to see them perform it in concert once though. It was truly amazing.
Absolutely love Agallochs stuff. This song being one of my favourites along with Black Lake Nidstång and Celestial Effigy. The bass in their songs is something I can appreciate as a bassist. When I play their songs as practice it’s very difficult to get bored of playing or to fall into autopilot as I often do. On top of that, their songs have beautiful melodies and great vocals.
Wow! Simply wow! What a surprise to see this here on the channel. Whoever requested this is a hero. I've known this song since the day it was released and still today I get goosebumps each and every single time I listen to it. So sad this band is no longer around.
Agalloch fan here since 5 years ago, this album was the first thing I heard from them, it blew my mind (despite having listened some abm before it). Indeed it's quite a complete creation, guitars, lyrics, vocals (I really couldn't identify the bass on this track). For some reason, each track plants a different new story both with instruments and lyrics from the previous, and that's what for me, makes it a complete album. Cheers, and keep it on! Amazing to see Don itself replying too!

Unique approach to music, pushing the art to its limits and boundaries, especially the latter iteration of the band. The Manifold Curiosity is a masterpiece from Choirs of the Eye. skipping over to later Kayo Dot, plenty of amazing tracks on Hubardo, Coffins on Io, Plastic House, Blasphemy and the latest singles from the upcoming album, particularly Void in Virgo.
