AGALLOCH In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion ~ Composer Reaction The Decomposer Lounge
I was lucky enough to see them live a couple of times before they disbanded. I'm in my mid 60's and, at one of their shows, there was a woman older than me sitting beside me. I asked why she was here and she pointed at John Haughm, the lead vocalist and said "That's my son". Precious moment.
Wow, that's strong
You were very fortunate I see them.
@@plslakewood They got back together! check their Instagram!
They’re back together and touring now!
envy mf (just kidding, what friking amazing band) however I had the chance to see the 3rd and the mortal alive in Mexico City
Oh, this is one I've been waiting for.
This whole album is an absolute masterpiece.
Couldn’t agree more
100% I jumped up in my chair when I saw the thumbnail
Truuu
I used to fall asleep to this album every night...in fact I need to start doing that again
Their whole catalogue is a masterpiece tbh
"If this grand panorama before me is what you call God, then God is not dead." gives me shivers even after 100 or so listens. I am by no means a religious man but this song is truly a spiritual experience to me.
They're Pantheist
YES!! 🙌
My interpretation of song is that it's about a man searching for god, and then realizing that god is everywhere in nature. It's basically a pantheistic message.
Me too
Jumping into Atmospheric Black Metal is always a good thing when you're ready for it, Agalloch also really brings the folk elements in their music, lovely stuff
So true esp this time of year for me.
Wow, I did not expect this! The Mantle is one of my favorite albums.
The Mantle is a killer album. Atmospheric af.
"The White" EP is my favourite Agalloch album... It features some of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written in the history of mankind. Not even kidding...
The Mantle is one of my favorite albums of all time. To me, this track is amazing, but it's just the beginning of an album of amazing compositions. They drew upon many influences from psychedelic and prog rock to doom metal, post-punk and neofolk. Their name is pronounced Aga-lock, by the way.
My favorite lyrics here; "Here at the edge of this world, here I gaze at a pantheon of oak a citadel of stone. If this grand panorama before me, is what you call god, then god is not dead!"
One of the greatest songs ever written
"Here at the edge of this world
Here I gaze at a pantheon of oak, a citadel of stone
If this grand panorama before me is what you call God
Then God is not dead"
Is my favourite set of lyrics in this song. Possibly my favourite set of lyrics in black metal. And yes, i consider Agalloch to be black metal!
Was not expecting this! One of my favorites, definitely 10/10 album
Agalloch did the best mix of Folk, Black and Post Metal. Mighty.
Man, i love so much Agalloch. And i shed tears because when i hear beautiful acoustic passages i think of folk. And folk reminds me of the beautiful days of my youth in the middle of nature. It kinda hurts because where i'm now in life. Also reminds me how gorgeous the world can be.
Hope your life is in a better place now!
How are you nowadays?
Our Fortress is Burning 1+2, only when of sound mind atop stalwart foundation. If so, its absolutely magnificent.
So glad you’re reviewing this one! I miss this band so much. You picked such a great first song to check out too. If you ever end up doing something else by them, I recommend the song Limbs
Limbs is beatiful :') also, nice Juturna pfp lol
this song is so special to me, I love this album so freaking much I'm so happy you are checking it out.. sending love from Australia! :)
This is my favorite band, followed by Alcest (another one you should totally do). Thank you so much for taking this never-ending journey with us. I would recommend Falling Snow from them as well
Si sabe el Juan
Sí sabe el Juan x2
This album is the standard bearer for Cascadian Black Metal. Every song is a masterpiece. It really needs a beginning to end listen to fully appreciate. I love that Don Anderson posted here! It's great when the musicians join in.
Love this band, I always listen to the album Ashes Against the Grain when the first snowfall happens... something about just feels right, I recommend Not Unlike the Waves!
Agalloch is one of my top 3 bands, and this is my favorite song of all time. The delight and intrigue I saw on your face as you listened to the song warmed my heart and reminded me of the joy I felt when I first heard this song. Thanks so much for checking it out and talking about it.
I did not expect to see this on here. Definitely in my top 5 albums. Made my day sir
Just thank you for decomposing Agalloch. This song is just perfect for a walk in the forest. Their whole catalog breathes the power of nature in every note.
1000000%
Next agalloch reaction should be the whole The mantle album 🔥🔥
Geebz introduces me to another great band! I love the musical journey he brings us all on
Ambient metal finally arrives. Please do Ulver at some point.
Nattens Madrigal is legit one of my favorite albums i keep on rotation
I was waiting for an Agalloch reaction!! They're on my top 3 fav bands along with Opeth and The Mars Volta, I am saving this to watch later, can't wait to see what you have to say about them.
This is my all time fav song
No way! These guys are amazing, you won't be disappointed!
Hell yes dude, I've loved Agalloch for years I'm so glad more people are discovering them and giving them some love. Respect dude.
A musical composition that will transport me to another realm. In the league of rock/metal songs such as Stairway to Heaven, November Rain, Bohemian Rhapsody, Last Resort or even that Slayer's Seaons in the Abbys. AGALLOCH a great band.
That harmonic late it the track! 🙌🏽 All these years later - still gets me every time. INCREDIBLE band.
This album quite literally saved my life. It’s my favorite album by far. Every song is a masterpiece and it leaves you emotionally drained by the end
This video reminded me of this album and honestly giving me a deeper appreciation for this song. Spinning it today, it's that time of year.
This is my favorite band of all time. Would love to see you do "Limbs" from "Ashes Against the Grain" ♥
One of the best and one of my absolute all time favorite albums of all forever and ever.
Oh damn that is a very special one in their discography
Welcome to their world ^^
Just recently listened to their Pale Folklore album after a long time, and still holds up! Agalloch is one of my favs
I've revisited most of the albums recently and, oh boy, are they hard to stop once you hit play.
I love this song, it feels relaxing somehow.
Also, if you want to check out, there's a band named White Ward, who also have that atmospheric dimension mixed with some jazz wibes. The result REAAALY is awsome, their album "Love Exchange Failure" is a masterpiece.
This is my favorite song of all time. I was blown away the first time I heard it, and it's one of the few songs that give me that same feeling of awe years later. The Mantle is one of my favorite albums of all time too.
I think of Agalloch as a post-metal band (they might repeat a riff or motif for a few minutes, but then develop it by adding new guitar parts and melodies), but they have some folk elements and atmospheric black metal in there too.
It’s a masterpiece, my favorite too
I've heard people call them "Grey Metal" , elements of black metal, but a little more melodic, instrumental, less harsh overall, but still with the key elements
Positively surprised to see this track on your channel.
Ever tried Maudlin of the Well or Kayo Dot? Unique approach to music, pushing the art to its limits and boundaries, especially the latter iteration of the band.
The Manifold Curiosity by Kayo Dot always blows my mind, I'm curious to see what would be your reaction listening to such a composition.
Great choices. Maudlin’s albums are positively life changing.
The Manifold Curiosity is a masterpiece from Choirs of the Eye. skipping over to later Kayo Dot, plenty of amazing tracks on Hubardo, Coffins on Io, Plastic House, Blasphemy and the latest singles from the upcoming album, particularly Void in Virgo.
damn good pick. I think this is still the greatest song I've ever heard.
My favorite band and a song from my favorite album ever! Been waiting for this for quite some time and you did justice to it!
I love folk elements in my metal! One of my favorite bands.
Game changing band. Major props for reacting to this.
23:35 Lmao, his reaction to the sweep is priceless 😅
Wow! Simply wow! What a surprise to see this here on the channel. Whoever requested this is a hero. I've known this song since the day it was released and still today I get goosebumps each and every single time I listen to it. So sad this band is no longer around.
I will never forget this channel. I have been a fan of Metal since I was in middle school back in the early 90s and I plan to continue to be a fan as long as I can.
Thank you sir for decomposing these wonderful songs. There is a lot of emotion, history and art in Metal music and you bring a wonderful "behind the scenes" answer as to why I like these songs so much. Thanks to you sir I am finally learning why.
This is one of my favorite albums to fall asleep to funny enough, what a pleasant surprise to see Agalloch on this channel
Wow, this made my day. Phenomenal band, terrific tune.
Woo!
You will never 'only hear one thing now', each and every listen reveals another layer that was previously hidden.
The panning stutter sounds like a killswitch on the guitar to me.
The entire album is well worth a listen beginning to end.
Such an awesome analysis of one of my favorite bands and songs. Thanks for doing this!
Great choice. Would love to see you do more of this type of music. I'd recommend trying out Kit - Kauan
I've been listening to Sorni Nai/Kaiho exclusively in full so I have no clue where individual songs start, but indeed an amazingly unique band. Listening to them in the Finnish winter was something else.
Soo stoked you did agalloch, one of my fav bands that got me deeper into different metal genres. Would love if you did more Sleep Token, they released their new album recently and every track off it is great. Love your stuff man
Man you cover so many of my favorite bands, absolutely love it
First! Lol 😂 New band for me. Let's explore some new tunes
ALOHA ADAM!!!
Do yourself a favor and check the entire Agalloch - The mantle album Also check :
Falling snow
Limbs
Not unlike the waves
You were but a ghost in my arms
The wooden door
Hawthorne passage
Geebz, thanks man, your latest song choices are great:) That whole Agalloch album is so good. Would appreciate more of them and also of All Them Witches:)
Yes All Them Witches!!! Going to see them live in Nashville this Halloween!
Beautiful song!
If you dig back into Opeth's catalog the first two albums also feature a lot of this sort of acoustic black-metal style. Try the songs The Night and the Sighlent Water, The Apostle in Triumph, Black Rose Immortal, and To Bid You Farewell.
Back in the day, The Night and the Silent Water was my favourite Opeth track, but then I heard an interview with Mikael Akerfeldt after blackwater was released, were he said it was he least favourite tune. it broke my heart. That being said you are totally right about the sound comparison.
@@Tommydis It's his "least favourite" i think because it was written about his dying grandfather, and brings back too many bittersweet memories (much like Tool/Maynard and Wings For Marie). I was lucky enough to see them perform it in concert once though. It was truly amazing.
Hell yeah! Love Agallcoh
I love Agalloch
Would love to see a reaction to Oranssi Pazuzu - Tyhjä Temppeli. They're a psychedelic black metal band and they have a real unique atmospheric sound
OH yes! I was waiting for this!
Just go and check out Limbs and Falling Snow (the songs which instantly pop up in mind when you think of Agalloch, which should be theated as a whole) or basically anything from their last title (which was something quite special, still feel sad for their disband).
I would recommend Panopticon for any atmospheric black metal, love Autumn eternal and into the north woods. Get goosebumps everytime i listen
Hell yeah, I’m wearing a Panopticon shirt right now funny enough
Totally would freak out if he would do Kentucky.
Dead Loons
Panopticon is great
Oh wow, its been a while since i saw an agalloch song reviewed. Thanks for that upload geebz ;)
Agalloch - Falling Snow
do it bro god please bro just do it
OH MY GOD this was the last thing i was expecting to see. Fucking LOVE this album
So stoked you finally got to Agalloch. They have so many options to review as their albums are just brilliant and I think you will enjoy the ride. Kudos to you for giving a sadly overlooked band, from a review perspective, a chance and I will humbly say you will be rewarded for your efforts. Cheers mate!
For anyone who doesn't know, the band's name is pronounced with a "ck" sound at the end, like "Loch Ness." I didn't know until someone told me. Tell your neighbors. If there's one thing the world must know, it's how to pronounce Agalloch
Also have to say, the correct pronunciation of Loch isn't a ck like "lock", it's softer and rolls off the roof of the mouth rather than clicking. It's a distinction my Scottish pals have taught me when I got it wrong.
@@marrow226 honestly not sure how Agalloch is pronounced, I imagine it's a soft ck.
They should reform so when they say "We are Agalloch from..." When playing live we'd know for sure 😂
@@Breadcups as a huge fan, I’m pretty sure it’s “agga-lock”
Why did I think it was Aga-lich? Did the pronunciation tool I looked up just totally butcher it? And to think I trusted it...
Nice! I was just thinking it's that time of year to binge some Agalloch albums and drink dark beer.
I agree with others that Limbs and Falling Snow should be next for Agalloch. I also think they should be heard back to back as they are on the album. They just transition so well and complement each other. I can't listen to one without the other, but that'd be a 20 minute session.
Never expected to hear an analysis of Agalloch songs on one of those channels...
Unfortunately, I discovered them a few years after they broke up, but have since become a fan and purchased all of their recordings. Currently, I am trying to think of how I can become independently wealthy (in the next two months), quit my job, and go to Europe to see their reunion show in September.
Insomnium - Heart Like a Grave
This band is right up your alley my friend. Loving your content, keep on decomposing!
You might look into Sculptured too since Don mentioned it. Very interesting music.
Yes, Can't believe it, was off to bed but not for another 30 minutes now. I grovelled for this in the comments of another one of your clips, I will forever think that perhaps I influenced you subliminally :)
Agallock* with the K.
One of my favorite bands of all time, LET'S GOOOOOOO
If you like this also check out Wolves in the Throne Room
also I love your videos so so much. Your wise, open-minded and wholesome approach is so refreshing. please keep up the good work this channel is a true treasure :) also I would love if you checked out some swallow the sun, they are a Finnish melodic death-doom band, and are one of my very favourite bands. Song-wise, "emerald forest and the blackbird", "upon the water" and their latest single "woven into sorrow" would be amazing to hear your opinion on as a composer.
Emerald forest and the black bird is my favorite album of STS! Love that band, they accompanied me through all my college years 😊
@@rashabayoudh5884 omg that album is my favourite too!! I'm currently in college and their music is really helping me through it all. rock on
You should get more into Katatonia
Jason Walton's bass playing in Agalloch is criminally underrated
You rule Geebz
Please do more Agalloch. Falling Snow would be amazing.
That is the song that hooked me, the 2nd time i heard it on Siriusxm Liquid Metal, I pulled over to write the bands name down and song title.
I love Agalloch, great track from them! 'Into the Painted Grey' is fantastic if you're looking for another from them at some point
This is in my top 30 songs off all time such a great song and band !
Can't tell if they're just doubling the vocals, but whatever it is their doing is unique and very cool. #1 thing that drew me in the first time I heard 🤘
Geebz, in case no one else said so, yes that was a double bass. The band originally never intended to play live, so on this album they threw so much layering on each track. The songs take on a whole different journey when they finally did play them live.
Only problem with the live versions(that I've heard) is they're played too fast.
You must do falling snow from this band sir. The pure emotional weight. I'm not the type of guy usually but damn near made me tear up when I first heard it. If you were to do anything, please. lol
Really amazing analyzis man
Omg Thé Mantle is a masterpiece of atmospheric black metal. Thanks so much for this
For a similar line: Wolves in the Throne Room - I Will Lay Down My Bones Among the Rocks and Stones. Their latest release is also great - Mountain Magick, for instance. WITTR is a little heavier than Agalloch, maybe… but same thing, Pacific Northwest Black Metal.
YES! Got a chance to see WitTR live in like 2011 or so. At a small, literal house that had been turned into a venue. They came out in the dark in robes. Incredible live. Two Hunters is one of my tip top favorites. Them and Agalloch are absolute tops.
gay commie band, not even close to as good as agalloch
@@HenryFordOfficial lol
Gonna ask for it again because idk if you've seen it yet or if anyone has already recommended it, but you should absolutely give No Child Of Man Could Follow by Shylmagoghnar a listen! Also, while I've heard these guys ( Agalloch) I hadn't heard this song before so this was a nice surprise
All I could think of when this was going was putting on transience and going to sleep. Absolutely love shylmagoghnar.
Man this band got me through some dark teenage years. They have very specific feeling that I've never heard recreated
I actually have not yet watched THIS video... but am excited to get your take on Ina Forsman particularly "Bubbly Kisses"...... I love your passion for music and LOVE your reaction videos... the 1st video I watched on your channel was "Sober" by Tool..... as a tool fan..... I loved your appreciation of EVERY aspect of the performance.... I saw them in 93.... at 1st Ave in Minneapolis. It is a very small intimate venue... (where Purple Rain was filmed). Maynard actually performed most of the show naked.... I had never experienced anything as intense as that show until seeing Korn in 93 or 94 at the same venue.....
One of my favorite bands. Definitely do more, I Am the Wooden Doors from this same album would be a good contrast for a shorter, faster song.
I'd also recommend if you haven't tried it, the band Pelican, instrumental post metal.
I think Post Rock/Metal deserves a week on it's own like Stoner :D
This album has some great instrumentals, specifically The Hawthorne Passage is really great.
It's been around for a good while, but Beyond the Gates part two by Wretched is a banger. I think you'd enjoy it and do a great job with its decomposition
One of my personal favorites, The Mantle. Amazing album
I can't believe it! I can't believe it! I can't believe it! I NEVER thought you'd check this song out. WOW! The first time I heard this composition nearly 20 years ago it just sucked me in its world of magic and never let go. Few compositions are truly transcendent to me. This is one of them. Orion by Metallica and Echoes by Pink Floyd are two others.
Wow...never expected an Agalloch video. I remember when The Mantle was released it was a pretty big deal in the underground...I didn't think much of it, personally. I thought it was territory already explored and perfected by bands like Opeth. It's still cool to see a react vid though. If it hasn't already been done, I recommend Yob's Beauty in Falling Leaves, or really anything by Yob. They're about as distinct in their signature sound as a band like Tool.
I have been waiting for so long! Can't wait for this listen
"Like every hope I've ever had...
Like every dream I've ever known...
It washed away in a tide of longing, a longing for a better world
From my will, my throat, to the river, and into the sea...
Wash away...
Fade away..."
We need anything from Enslaved and on a side note Black Crown Initiate would be great also.
