They came to the theberton theatre in 2003 when I was only 13 years old, I've been to many concerts and festivals with the biggest bands and I MUST say, Silverchair was the most memorable, most powerful, most beautiful experience I ever had. I wish I had the chance to go to more than one of their concerts but I'm only 32, I saw them when they were about to break up after young modern. But my god, Silverchair is in my opinion, the most criminally underrated band in history. Daniel John's voice is absolutely positively unbelievable. He is one of the best singers in the world and they and he deserve way, way, way more recognition. So much of the world are missing out on masterpieces of songs! I'm really glad you got around to doing this one because this song (and the whole Diorama album) is pretty unique within the alt-rock/alt-metal world. Plenty of bands do orchestral arrangements to flesh out their songs and add some flavor (Devin Townsend, BTBAM, Metallica, Shinedown, etc.) but Diorama always sounded to me like they wrote the songs for the orchestra and then filled in the "normal" instruments in the background, which gives it a really massive, emotional feeling. Not something I want to hear every band do, but they pulled it off big time.
So glad you did this song Geebz. I have heaps to say about this as this song in particular is one of my very favourites of all time. Hopefully you see the comment! First of all, as an Australian, this is by a country mile my favourite Australian album. Daniel Johns wrote it when he was just 22. It was Silverchair's 4th album and they burst onto the scene as 15 year olds, and became known for their heavier sound during that Nirvana grunge era, and most Silverchair fans will say that their first record 'Frogstomp' is their favourite, but then there is the other side of the fan base like myself who have a greater appreciation for what they achieved on this album 'Diorama'. Basically Johns was sick of writing angry, depressive music and he had written a completely different 4th record that he ditched entirely and ran the tape over to destroy it permanently so he couldn't go back to it. He's said that it was a heavier record as he was listenin to Kyuss a lot at the time, but that he knew Silverchair had to get out of being pigeon holed as 'just a heavy rock band'. He taught himself to play piano for this record by ear and just listening to what he thought sounded nice, rather than worrying about what was technically 'correct' to do. The orchestration is by Van Dyke Parks who is best known for working with the Beach Boys. They had significant trouble with the album as Atlantic who had the rights in the USA didn't like what they heard and didn't want to release it as they were expecting a 'typical Silverchair record'. Due to the stress of that particular incident and many other factors, Daniel Johns was suffering with reactive arthritis around the time of this record, which confined him to a wheelchair. If you ever see the video for 'Luv your life', you'll notice that while the other band members are rotoscoped (animation drawn over a video of the band members moving around), Daniel Johns' legs are pre-drawn because he couldn't stand up or move much. Eventually he recovered from it but he's had a very tumultuous career where he has suffered significantly from being in the lime light. His new solo album was due to be out in just a few weeks, but it seems like the pressure has gotten to him and he just last week went into rehab for alcoholism after crashing his car. He's struggled a lot with being in the public eye - often being very shaky in television interviews, and had to sue a newspaper in Australia (and won) that had falsely ran a defamatory story that he was seen regularly going to a brothel in Sydney, which was a complete fabrication. He's also stated that he doesn't want to tour or do live performances anymore as he can't deal with the stress and pressure. I really hope we'll get to hear the new record, whenever he is able to find himself in a better mindset. He's one of our most brilliant musicians without a doubt. Extremely talented. Also, you absolutely have to do 'Across the Night' and 'Too Much of Not Enough'. Absolutely majestic.
FutureNever is out and Emergency Calls Only reunites him with VDP (happy dance) -Daniel said all along it's being released as an album (no singles, although there are at least four on there) it's on high rotation in my life at the moment, it has to be for you to get everything that is going on. And as for a song that rips your heart right out of your chest.......FreakNever - a rewritten version of the Silverchair hit Freak, sung by an 11 year old friend of the family who's anonymity is being protected - really worth a listen.
Daniel Johns was the primary songwriter on the song. Paul Mac and Van Dyke Parks made the arrangements that really pop on the tune. Across the Night has similar flair, though maybe not as top to bottom dynamic and varied as Tuna in the Brine.
This is one of my favorite songs. I even have the lyric “don’t lose your heart, you’ll need it” tattooed 🙂 the song just has a magical feel to it. Love it so much and glad you did too! I appreciate all your insight!
This album is amazing and constantly slept on. One of my favourites. Very proud to share the same hometown as these guys, actually still see two of them floating around on occasion. Crazy to compare this album to where they started out, such maturity in songwriting and playing. I know Ben (drummer) had to take a subdued approach but his playing absolutely fits everything on this album. I think the closest you'll get to this kind of song on their last album would be the track Thieving Birds.
Me and my brother, a drummer, both share a huge love for this album. I mentioned once that in all the many (many) time's I've listened to it I'd never paid much mind to the drums. Dude got so amped up about how that's why it's so perfect: nothing is embellished, every fill fits the moment, and that it's a perfect example of an exceptionally talented drummer playing to what the music needs. Also yes Thieving Birds is (probably) my second favourite Chair song lol
Piano parts were written by Daniel. He wrote Diorama in piano in order to find different chords for different emotions because he already mastered guitar, so piano was a new thing for him.
OH MY GOODNESS!!! YOU DID IT!! MY FAVOURITE SONG FROM MY FAVOURITE BAND!!! I AM LOSING MY GODDAMN MIND!!! Ye ok I've finished the video n calmed down a bit, but damn I'm so happy you got to hear this song. IMO the greatest album to ever come out of Australia, and certainly my favourite of all time. So dynamic, such stunningly lush orchestral work, and Daniel Johns' literally flawless (and not touched up at all on this record) vocal performances it's just... a magnificent piece of art. Thanks again for doing this, and to whichever hero(es) were pushing for this, bless ya dang hearts
Also One Way Mule is probably my other favourite from this album, the dynamic shift from that song into Tuna In The Brine is *chef's kiss* sexy as hell
Ohhh my I’m soo excited you did this one! I’ve checked back a few time since you did Emotion Sickness in the last 6 months to see if you did any new sc song. This is amazing. Now things to know about this: - Daniel Johns was only 22-23 when he wrote this song - when he wrote Diorama the album this is on, he self tough himself how to play piano - arrangement are by Van Dyke Park. Who is mostly know for collaborating with Brian Wilson on Smile. - Paul Mac a classically trained Australian DJ, also helped Dan translate what he had in mind to the piano - Dan has some form of synesthesia, which you can def feel in the music and might explain why it feels theatrical - the album this is on did not perform well for different reasons back then but it is now considered as their magnum opus - the album was shelved in the US by Atlantic who felt that the album wasn’t commercially viable. They wanted to bring in Fred Durst to help write/produce.
I believe I dropped a comment saying we should look at this on one of the other silverchair videos I am so excited to get your take on this this whole album was so musically sound and they're really doing some interesting things I know you didn't do this just for me but man you made my whole month thanks
I worked with a guy who engineered when he was singing with the scare and he said he was one of the easiest singers to work with because he had such control over his voice. A great talent
So glad you did this song. Not just one of Daniel's greatest feats, but one of the best songs ever written. And the story behind it is incredibly moving.
@@chubbsthestuntmonkey7262 And what did you think....? I'm curious, because I ADORE this album. It's perfect. SO diverse and just beyond expertly written. It's a modern masterpiece and it's bizarre to me how unknown it is....at least here in America.
Literally one of my favourite Silverchair songs. Daniel Johns (frontman/guitarist) actually wanted to move this record into a very theatrical place and at the time it was made it was groundbreaking as it wasn’t at all mainstream. He had a big part in that endgame you mentioned too- he’s a genius. And i believe Daniel also wrote the piano buts as he plays a version of this on piano
It’s unbelievable if you think about it. Dan wanted to write an album on piano. But he didn’t know how to play the piano, at least not more than the basics. And in teaching himself how to play the piano, this is the album he wrote???!!!??? After All These Years is probably one of the best piano ballads ever written, and composed on the instrument by someone who was learning as he went.
Daniel Johns wrote the song. Van Dyke Parks did the orchestration, Paul Mac on piano. Van Dyke also did Across The Night and Luv Your Life on that album. Check out the Creation of Diorama Making of. It's great. Also there is a video here on RUclips called Silverchair: Great Australian Albums - Diorama I think it's called about it and they go into some detail about it along with their whole story in general up to that album. Fantastic.
Daniel Johns is an absolute genius. He was composing orchestral pieces in his head at 12 years of age. Silverchair is my favorite band, tied with Tool. It's an impossible choice, so it's a tie, for me. Diorama is epic, absolutely timeless. They were mindblowing LIVE. I always wished they would get back together, but I don't believe they ever will. Frogstomp was insanely good too- especially considering that they were 13 & 14 years old when it came out. Daniel is the genius behind their music. He writes almost all of it. 🌬🙏🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸🙏⌛
I'm glad there were a couple of mentions of The Dear Hunter in the comments, because upon hearing this song, it was the first thing I thought of, and had to come to the comments to recommend them for a reaction. As for that recommendation, I think you'd LOVE A Night on the Town or Waves. As for this video, I first clicked because I remembered Silverchair from my high school days in the 90's, and was intrigued by the "Orchestration" in the thumbnail. This isn't the Silverchair that I remember from back then, but I absolutely LOVED the song, and will absolutely be checking out more from them because of this video. Thanks for the video, and thanks to the community for recommending it to you!
Was so excited to glance at the title of this video seeing that you got around to Tuna in the Brine. Your analysis did not disappoint. Glad you enjoyed it. Such a mind blowing song from a brilliant band.
I love how this song is change after change after change, and the only constant is the chorus. Produced by David Bottrill as well, which was perfect for this album, and Daniel Johns is a musical genius.
This is a fantastic piece of work! They really bring you along melodically just like a rollercoaster, up and down along the vocals, and the transitions with the melody itself are awesome! Great vid, Geebz, thanks for all you do! Keep on rockin'!
Van Dyke Parks is responsible for the orchestral arrangements on this track (and a few others from the album it's on). This is why this sounds so massive, moving, gosh darn great :)
This was a joy to experience with you! Geebz..................please more Silverchair! Please.... In terms of songs like this: Across the Night and Those Thieving Birds(all 3 parts) are a must. In terms of their _heavy_ songs: One Way Mule is THE song to do imo. But also The Lever. Both from this same album. And then there's a ton of songs that don't necessarily fit eaither category, or fit both, that are just as good. Honestly....I guess what I'm saying is, Silverchair is a band you really ought to do a TON more reactions/analysis of. They're seen in America as a bit of a one, or maybe 2, hit wonder. Tomorrow and Ana's Song are great songs....but that's all most people know. But they are hands down one of the best bands....ever. And Daniel Johns is, imo, the single most underrated songwriter and vocalist and guitarist of that generation. They were very unfairly dismissed as derivitive back in the day....aping grunge. Sure, maybe there was a bit of that on their first album when they were FIFTEEN(!). But they did even that brilliantly. And then the following albums just got better and better and better. Silverchair is due a reconsideration now in 2022. They deserve way more critical acclaim and _analysis_ than they've gotten. And lastly, to anyone who's interested, there's an _excellent_ podcast called Too Much of Not Enough that is all about Silverchair's music. Each episode covers an album, including the side projects like The Dissociatives, and features interviews with the producers and engineers, etc. The podcast is very much focused on the music.....the theory, the chords, melodies, timbres, etc. To anyone who's both obsessed with music theory AND Silverchair....this podcast is heaven. Check it out! :D Ok....I need to stop. I'm starting to sound like a Silverchair/Daniel Johns evangelist. I mean....I am. But yeah....CONVERT! o_o
I've been enamored w/ this song since I first heard it in 2004. We, in the States, were truly living under a rock. Poor fella getting reactive arthritis and not being able to tour on this and just problem after problem... Whatever, what a gloriously artistic piece of work
Awesome video! Love your reactions and so glad you’ve discovered Silverchair. I’m one of those weirdos that digs their later material… and Tuna in the Brine is pure magic. Thx for digging into this one!
Hell yeah! This band, and this album, is so underrated it's honestly ridiculous. Daniel Johns is a legit creative genius and it's always bugged me how my fellow Americans never followed them beyond the song Tomorrow. Literally any song from this album is worth checking out. It's SUCH a diverse album...you've got a song like this, and then One Way Mule which might be the heaviest thing they ever recorded....and is basically a 10/10 groove riff stoner sludge metal masterpiece. And then there's songs like Too Much of Not Enough that is basic pop rock....done to magical perfection. Or the album closer, the vocals and piano John Lennon-ish After All These Years that has some gorgeous chord progressions and key changes. All of their albums are flawless....they didn't make a bad album. But Diorama is the essential one imo. And Daniel brought in Van Dyke Parks(yes that one) to orchestrate 3 songs....including this one. In a 'making of' doc on this album VDP said of Daniel...that he's the most musically gifted person he's ever worked with who isn't Brian Wilson. That says a lot....and he's not wrong. Daniel is someone I'll defend to my grave....the guy is a musical genius and more people need to go back and appreciate his work. The band itself is also insane....the 3 of them live is just bananas. Super powerful, so tight, so organic, and so in control of their craft....that they can easily go into weird freeform funky jams at the drop of a hat. Ben Gilles was an amazing dummer for Daniel to play off of. Can you tell I'm a fan? I'll stop now....I could gush forever about Silverchair.
The then 23-year-old Daniel Johns was inspired by Kate Bush and musical theatre during this period. His creativity was absolutely astonishing. String arranger Van Dyke Parks had said that Johns reminded him of Brian Wilson in many ways.
What?! A reaction I never thought I'd see. Good on you. Such an obscure Silverchair track to check out. I love this one. It's a piece of art. You rock, Geebz! Thanks for being so genuine. -Lauren :)
I love watching your face as you listen to this! I was so blown away by this album the first time I listened to it, and your facial expressions remind me of what I felt!!
Terrific reaction. Silverchair is a band who's progression was massive over the coarse of their career which was only 5 albums. Diorama(the album this song is on) is their masterpiece in my opinion.
Van Dyke Parks did the arrangement. They’re actually about to release music together again. Van Dyke has an incredible way of extracting the magic bits hidden inside Daniel Johns’ songs.
silverchair was a very interesting band, started out on the grunge wave but evolved in interesting ways and their last album was full of these rich orchestrations but they made it work, very underrated band
“World Upon Your Shoulders” is possibly one of the greatest songs ever written. “A world that’s big and violent” resonates in my head. You are a brilliant, affable and wonderful man. I miss your content! Best of luck with your life. Love from Ireland 🇮🇪
From Emotion Sickness to this, I think your next Silverchair should go right back to the very start so you can see, and further appreciate the growth of this band over only a handful of albums. The one that boosted them into everyone's field of view when they won a TV show competition at 14/15 years old - the song "Tomorrow".
Paul Mac played some of the harder piano parts on the album. He technically wasn't part of the official trio lineup of Silverchair. But he did contribute to their last two albums as well as go on tour with them a lot.
New to your channel. I love Silverchair! This is the last album before they went out in left field....I miss them. I never got the chance to see them live.

Did not expect this reaction. Sweet! Big fan of Silverchair, both their newer and older stuff and almost all of Daniels side projects. 🤙🏽
Also yes Thieving Birds is (probably) my second favourite Chair song lol
oh wow. the greatest Silverchair song ever
Yes! Agree 💯 silverchair is my favorite band. Tuna is one of my favorite songs from them, also one way mule! Love diorama and neon ballroom
Ohhh my I’m soo excited you did this one! I’ve checked back a few time since you did Emotion Sickness in the last 6 months to see if you did any new sc song. This is amazing.
Now things to know about this:
- Daniel Johns was only 22-23 when he wrote this song
- when he wrote Diorama the album this is on, he self tough himself how to play piano
- arrangement are by Van Dyke Park. Who is mostly know for collaborating with Brian Wilson on Smile.
- Paul Mac a classically trained Australian DJ, also helped Dan translate what he had in mind to the piano
- Dan has some form of synesthesia, which you can def feel in the music and might explain why it feels theatrical
- the album this is on did not perform well for different reasons back then but it is now considered as their magnum opus
- the album was shelved in the US by Atlantic who felt that the album wasn’t commercially viable. They wanted to bring in Fred Durst to help write/produce.
Can't tell if that last note is a joke or not. Lol.
@@CFChristian Words from DJ's mouth in an interview.
I believe I dropped a comment saying we should look at this on one of the other silverchair videos I am so excited to get your take on this this whole album was so musically sound and they're really doing some interesting things
I know you didn't do this just for me but man you made my whole month thanks
I worked with a guy who engineered when he was singing with the scare and he said he was one of the easiest singers to work with because he had such control over his voice. A great talent
Fun fact, the roboto wood block pruccossion you mentioned is actually a ping pong ball being dropped. The band had a ping pong table in the studio.
Cool fact. I had no idea about that.
‘The light in my darkest hour is fear’
💜
So glad you did this song. Not just one of Daniel's greatest feats, but one of the best songs ever written. And the story behind it is incredibly moving.
Love this song, an old favorite of mine - kudos to anyone that recommended it!
Van Dyke Parks also worked with them intently on this album. Amazing.
A true genius
Van Dyke Parks’ nickname for Daniel was Young Modern - which was the name of the final Silverchair album.
As a white dude in America in his mid 30s, I feel like I should have heard this before. This song has me in shambles. This is beautiful.
If you love that song you should check out the full album. It's nothing less than an epiphany.
Check out the whole record dude. It's a well kept secret.
I think I will. I have it queued up for my lunch break.
Fantastic.
It was produced by David Bottrill who did several Tool albums also. 👍🏻
🌬🙏🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸🙏⌛
He didn’t get into orchestral stuff until 17 or 18. Brilliant though
In my opinion, THE BEST album ever recorded!!!!
I really miss Silverchair 😢
Geebz facial expressions during this was a journey in itself. Love your work Geebz
I've been pumping Diorama for the past week. Love it. Loved it. Discovering it all over again. Just a beautiful album.
Heck yes!! Been requesting this for a long time. Good on ya mate
Love this track. Such a beautiful song to sing.
Was so excited to glance at the title of this video seeing that you got around to Tuna in the Brine. Your analysis did not disappoint. Glad you enjoyed it. Such a mind blowing song from a brilliant band.
I agree with the person who says this is a gorgeous song. Indeed it is. Such brilliance.
One of my favorites of theirs. They really grew leaps and bounds beyond the genre they came from.
Never really got into them back in the day, but find myself really appreciating them these days.
Van Dyke Parks : “and I love 3 French horns”
Van Dyke Parks is responsible for the orchestral arrangements on this track (and a few others from the album it's on). This is why this sounds so massive, moving, gosh darn great :)
Always makes me cry, thanks Daniel.
The middle part had a ping pong ball being bouuunced👌!!
Magical song. Loved your take on it. Great reaction 💖
Ok....I need to stop. I'm starting to sound like a Silverchair/Daniel Johns evangelist.
I mean....I am. But yeah....CONVERT! o_o
I have been listening to Silverchair for well over 15 months now, from studio album 1 to 5 and repeat....... love em
Paul Mac played piano on this album as well as Neon Ballroom and Young Modern. He was an unofficial member of the band in the Young Modern Era
Again awesome song choice!!
U pick ones that people just normally wouldn’t!! Love your passion for music!!!
I hadn't seen you in ages man. I missed your wonderful descriptions of songs.
ya!! think i requested this in Emotion Sickness video! This song is simply out of this world!
YES!!! YOU FINALLY TOOK MY REQUEST!!! This song is amazing. Then You release it on my birthday...perfect gift
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
@@KeyOfGeebz thank you!!
Silverchair’s Diorama + Young Modern Station were legendary and such an underrated masterpieces
Diorama is a f****** great album! Nice reaction!
2:07 Omg the excitement in your face is so palpable, a joy to watch 🥺
Terrific reaction. Silverchair is a band who's progression was massive over the coarse of their career which was only 5 albums. Diorama(the album this song is on) is their masterpiece in my opinion.
Van Dyke Parks did the arrangement. They’re actually about to release music together again. Van Dyke has an incredible way of extracting the magic bits hidden inside Daniel Johns’ songs.
He may have also played piano but don’t quote me on that.
Yes! The new Daniel Johns/Van Dyke Parks collab is called Emergency Calls Only and it is not to be missed.
I have to stop this video to say, that your reaction, is EXACTLY how i feel listening to this track. You are amazing and i just subscribed 😂
silverchair was a very interesting band, started out on the grunge wave but evolved in interesting ways and their last album was full of these rich orchestrations but they made it work, very underrated band
I cant believe its not rock
Amazing song. Glad to see it on the channel
New to your channel. I love Silverchair! This is the last album before they went out in left field....I miss them. I never got the chance to see them live.
This is my favorite song ever. Diorama is a masterpiece
This is my favorite song of all time. Just brings out very emotion inside of me. I just cannot stand still listening to it.
9:50 never fails to give me chills. So beautiful.
Your eyes during the beginning listen were so fulfilling. They justified my total love for this album as a whole.
I came back as i was curious of this had featured on Critical reactions... this was amazing. Had chills watching you listen to the music.
Absolutely my favorite song from my favorite Silverchair album. 💜 Daniel Johns shared a story I posted on ig stating that it was my fave, and he said it was his, also. 💜 Soooo so glad such an amazing song found it's way to you. 💜
Oh my gosh I’m so excited that you did this!!!!! I wonder if you saw my comment talking about this song! 🤔😍 Thank you so much! I knew you’d love it. Such a beautiful tune. You should really listen to that entire album. Silverchair should be way bigger here in the states. Do more Silverchair please ;)
Not sure why this song is getting so much love lately, but I couldn't be happier! As I've been waiting 20 years for people to agree with me on this being one of the greatest songs ever. :P
literally one of my fav songs ever....
YES YES YES!!! One of the greatest songs ever written (in my opinion) and so happy to see you review it! Silverchair and Daniel Johns never get enough recognition. The Dissociatives - Somewhere Down The Barrel (Live on Rove) would be a good follow up to this
The orchestration was done by Daniel in collaboration with Van Dyke Parks
Yes that Van Dyke Parks
This song IS Magical.... WORLD MIGHT KNOW IT.. Genious Johns
Diorama is a great album. Still interesting to listen to after all these years.
Sing it like an Aussie..."chewna in the brine" 🤣
Lead singer Daniel Johns drives the ideas of the band. Great musician. He is also the Piano player & lead guitarist.
Far out now I have to listen to Diorama again. Tuna in the Brine is such an incredible piece of work, so unique.
Daniel Johns of course the genius song writer and composer, the legendary Van Dyke Parks of Brian Wilson, Beach Boys and U2 fame did the orchestrations. Sydney Orchestra used to record orchestrations.
The Orchestration was recorded in Prague and definitely not by anyone from the Sydney Orchestra
@@facebookuser7851 incorrect the orchestration for the next album young modern was recorded in Prague. Daniel said young modern was even more expensive to produce than Diorama.
@@gavins9946 Too right too right
Woah haha out of nowhere! I listened to this album a lot back in the day. Still a great song
Excellent review!! Thank you.
I think the lead singer of this band would be really pleased to hear this, one of his aims with the album was to take you on a journey and this song definitely encapsulates that really well.
Great reaction!
