I was lucky enough to see Silver chair once. They performed with Powder Finger whom I LOOOVED.
They were SO Loud, it was an insane night. I'm glad I got to see Silver chair as they will probably never perform again due to Daniels mental health issues. Such a shame, he is very talented.

    Hi Bryan 🙂
Thanks very much for sharing your reaction to Tuna in the Brine, was really good to hear your thoughts on the song and performance. 👍 I enjoyed the video and am really happy you gave it a listen and enjoyed the song and writing. I agree he has a great voice and really great control over it. 🤌
Have you listened to the studio recording yet? The production is amazing! I love all the little details and instruments in it. I think you are right there are horns as well as a lot of other instruments including string instruments. I love how they have used the instruments to convey the emotions and I also really enjoy the piano. It's sonically very interesting, you think the sound is going to go a certain way or stay positive and bright, but then it changes and goes darker.
Sorry about the sound on the live. I thought it was pretty good overall for a live video which is why i shared that link, but as you said it is a little hard to understand what he is saying. I think it's because some parts of the music are louder as you suggested. Also I don't think I realised its hard to hear what hes saying before as I know all the lyrics, so I automatically hear what he's saying because I know the lyrics - if that makes sense.
Up till now I had thought that they had some orchestral instruments played live for their 'Live from Faraway Stables' Concerts but wikipedia says the the orchestrated sections were recreated by 2 extra keyboards. The orchestral instruments for the studio recording were real. Their next album Young Modern used a full orchestra (The City of Prague Philharmonic) on the studio recording. They worked with the composer Van Dyke Parks (who worked with the Beach Boys and many others) for orchestral arrangements on both Diorama and Young Modern.
Maybe If you decide to react to Silverchair again you could listen to the studio recording first so you ensure you can hear the lyrics, then the live if you enjoyed the live performance regardless.
    My thoughts on the song:
I don't think I'm very good at understanding or articulating my thoughts or observations on the song but here goes.....
It's seems to me it's a very back and forth song emotionally. It's kind of a roller-coaster, or see-saw, I feel there are negative and positive parts to the song, like it's a struggle.
There's a lot of lines in the lyrics I really like. Love the line 'the light in my darkest hour is fear, denies me of anything good'. Just the idea of fear being the light or lightest thing in the dark is interesting and sad. But also it kind of seems like it's implying the fear is good as it's referred to as a 'light'.
I think it's about being afraid (of life and maybe yourself) hiding yourself and your flaws and putting on a front or metaphorical mask to get by - a persona / fake persona🤔. I think there's some elements that point at wallowing in self pity. Eg. The line 'to all of the animals who keep sipping the sweat from my back, your making me ill and i cant get enough'. I thought it could possibly be about depression or anxiety as I know he has/ does suffer from them. Or if not anxiety and depression specifically, I feel like it's about self confidence (lack of it) and fear associated with that. But then there are the positive hopefull aspects of the song saying its time to shine, stop hiding and being afraid. This is what it feels like it's about to me.
At some point I wasn't sure if it was about some sort of addiction because of the line 'take another pill' but I don't think so. I otherwise thought the 'pill' referenced could just be a representation of repressing something, or like you mentioned take a pill to feel better because the next line is 'tell another lie'. So it seems to be 2 ways to describe the same kind of thing if that makes sense - take pills and tell lies to cover something up. Hiding and using 'pills and lies' as an easy fix instead of facing things. 'Take another pill and tell another lie and lie amongst your lies like tuna in the brine.'
I think it's interesting that 'tuna in the brine' is used as a negative and positive metaphor in different parts of the song. The above reference about lying amongst your lies like tuna in the brine is negative, then later he says 'it's my time to shine, like a tuna in the brine' which is positive. Saying he should let go, shine and not be afraid, but he's struggling.
The first and third verse - the one that says 'Closer now than we ever have been....' sounds like it could be referring to another person and maybe it is, but I feel like its more likely hes talking to himself. Or at least I think you can apply the lyrics either way and I think I prefer it to be about the self. Hmm closer to being more comfortable being yourself, not hiding, something like that? The sound of the instruments and everything is brighter here so I think this makes sense, like it's hopeful.
On further thought the line 'to all of the animals who keep sipping the sweat from my back, your making me ill and i cant get enough' I always thought it was so strange but interesting.
Just thinking further about it when writing this, im wondering if the 'animals' could be a reference to negative media or antifans or just negative people in his life like family and friends, people that are toxic or have a negative influence. Like they fixate on negative things or struggles that him or the band experienced as if to try to bring them down - like he suffered from anorexia and depression or negative reviews about the music. So like he consumes the thoughts and comments from these people then feels worse and kind of wallows in and relishes it in a masochistic way. 'making me ill and I cant get enough'.
I'm not sure about that alleged quote on Genius, as you said it says it's not verified and doesn't reference where it's come from. There could be something to it though, as the song features the lyric 'it's my time to shine, like a tuna in the brine' and it sounds similar to a quoted comment I have found (explained below). If there's anything to the quote, the humour aspect to me would just be that tuna in the brine is a funny metaphor, maybe thats what is meant. 🤔
I've found a magazine article with an interview with Daniel Johns about the album Diorama (that the song is from) and he explains a bit about the meaning of some songs including this one. It is featured on their Official website so I would say given its on their website it's an article that's true and supported by the band unlike the info on genius. Theres actually a second article there as well from the same person but a year later. The second article covers the same info with quotes from Daniel Johns, but also has extra info and quotes from the other band members. I'll share the link to both below.
The part about Tuna In The Brine is about a 3rd of the way down in the first article, under the question 'tell us about a few songs on the album' but ill copy it below. He doesnt say it, but interestingly I think based on what Daniel Johns said about the album in the article and process of writing it, the pills being referenced in the song could be antidepressants as he explains that he was weaning himself off antidepressants during the writing of the album and was starting to feel emotions he hasn't felt in a long time. So if it's not just a metaphor but real pills, maybe it's a reference to that.

    www.chairpage.com/press_releases/item/235/
Here is the part in the article about Tuna In The Brine.
"There’s a song called ‘Tuna In The Brine’ that’s about preserving yourself by not exposing anything about yourself. It’s about kind of lying in a sea of lies and using that as a preservative so you don’t have to expose yourself and become worn out by the realities of living.”
Is that based on personal experience?
Daniel: “Not so much lies. I didn’t lie, but I never exposed myself. I never showed anyone what I was really feeling, and I wrote ‘Tuna In The Brine’ after I decided, ‘I’m gonna live’.”
I wasn't sure what vestry meant either but thought it might have been something like a safe. I looked it up and see its....a room or building attached to a church used as an office, to store important religious items and is used by priest, choirboys etc to change into ceremonial garments. So I interpret it as being sacred. So the line 'And you found the lock, To my dorm and opened the door to my trust fund, my vestry.' So I think dorm, trust fund and vestry are all different words to represent similar things, something thats safe, protected or guarded has become exposed.
Overall I think the lyrics are more cryptic than they first seem. For example the line 'for my pregnant paws aren't changing anything' is so interesting I can't work out its full meaning. I mean I've looked up the term 'pregnant pause' and it says it means a pause or silence that gives the impression it will be followed by something significant. But he has used the word 'paws' instead of 'pause' 🤔Not sure why this would be, but I notice the line before it refers to animals so maybe it's to connect it to that.
The later albums are very different to their earlier albums and songs both in the sound and lyrical content. They were only 14 or 15 when they wrote songs for and recorded the first album Frogstomp. As I have read most songs from that album we're inspired from things they saw on TV including news or documentaries. Eg. The song Pure Massacre (written by Daniel Johns) was inspired by the Bosnian war - this is mentioned on wikipedia. Whereas lyrics for the later albums including Diorama, were taken from personal life experiences which makes sense given they would have some by then. Although they were inspired by interesting topics the lyrics for the first album were definetly simpler compared to this later work.

Fantastic song…probably Silverchair’s best IMHO. Daniel is an underrated mega talent. Piano on this song was played by Paul Mac who Daniel later collaborated with as The Dissociatives. The orchestral arrangement was done with the legendary Van Dyke Parks of Beach Boys “Smile” fame. An amazing song.

Seems like Dan changes his interpretation of this song based on how he’s feeling. Other times I’ve heard the song being about going on and coming off of antidepressants. I fondle keys to my heart when everyone’s heart seems so calm sounds like he’s wondering why he’s so fidgety and anxious, and he doesn’t perceive that other people are like that. Tuna in the brine is a double metaphor- the brine goes from something he lies in (one, the feeling being on antidepressants as feeling kind of submerged, two, lying that everything is fine when it’s not), to something that allows him to shine (when he’s off antidepressants and has overcome, albeit temporarily, his mental health issues).
The lines that stand out to me are 1) Don’t lose your heart, you’ll need it - often people who are suffering seal away or hide their emotions, and it’s like he’s trying to convince himself to not do that, and 2) Painting a lie, seeing the colours, but you seem closer to everything. Like he can still paint with colours (I think colours here are a metaphor for emotions - Dan has synethesia and expresses sounds and feelings using colours, this sounds purple, this feels blue, etc.) but he’s not really feeling it, it’s just an act, but he sees the genuineness in others, that they’re having a more intense experience.
This song came to me when I was struggling myself, and I could really feel it as a visceral experience, I still do to this day. This is the first song I search up when I feel like I want to close in on myself or retreat away from things.

I'm sure you heard the song Freak as well as Tomorrow when you were younger. Freak was a single from their second album Freak Show released in 1997. I thought I would share this really cool performance they did of Freak with you. Maybe you might want to watch on your own rather than react. It's a really interesting contrast to hear and see them at these 2 different times of their career - about 7 years apart.
The performance was from the 1997 ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association)
Awards which is the Australian music awards show - so our equivalent of the Grammy's. They actually opened the awards show, and it was of course broadcast on TV - it's a pretty good quality video considering. From the ARIA RUclips channel.
    ruclips.net/video/52tUsvBdAz0/видео.html
That year they won the Artist of the Year Award which is apparently the only award decided by members of the public as opposed to the industry.
They won several ARIA'S for Diorama when it was released (and others for other albums and songs over the years).
There is also a 60min documentary showing the background of the making of the album Diorama (which Tuna in the Brine is from). It's a really basic quality /made documentary but very interesting and insightful showing a lot of details of the process and those involved, recording orchestral instruments etc. It does of course give spoilers for the other songs on the album. Was released on dvd but there is a copy uploaded to RUclips. Thought Id share it in case its of interest to you at any stage. Here's the link ruclips.net/video/qZsl387ka48/видео.html
