"I feel like I'm in a theme park. Like I'm on a rollercoaster...a musical rollercoaster." Welcome to the album Diorama by Silverchair. Give it a listen with the lights off. It truly is magical!
I was obsessed with silverchair. I've seen them live several times, but one of my best memories is when I got taken in to watch their soundcheck as a sort of little private concert in 1999 and my knees actually buckled when he sang Paint pastel princess. His voice is so powerful live. Then i got to meet the 3 of them, Ben & Chris were silly & fun. You could tell Daniel was having a hard time as there were about 10 of us there, but i was one of the special few who he spoke more than 2 words to. He stood by me the whole time because I was the only girl there not making a ass of herself, saying things like "I love you sooo much omg!!" & screaming Etc.. lol. Btw Ill never forget how he smelled. Like lavender essential oils. Probably to calm him.....sorry for the rant. So many memories!!
Unexpected is definitely the way to describe Daniel Johns (the singer). Silverchair were crazy genre hoppers from album to album. Never wanted to repeat themselves.
@Nick Haha. Nah I'm good. Even if I did want to die on that hill, if you need the genre difference between this song and "Tomorrow" explained to you then you're either being facetious or don't understand what a genre is. :)
@Nick lol. Yeah I don't agree but I'm just gonna go about my day instead of arguing with strangers on the internet who mistakenly thought I wanted their opinion. :)
I think the most amazing part of Silverchair was the growth they made as a band. By the time they got to Diorama they were crazy creative, and sounded very little like the grunge band they started out as.
yeah i bought that album when it came out, and still have it to this day, but unfortunately never bought any of their others, they went in a different direction that didn't appeal to me
It was, especially considering how young they were, but they began to be less grunge afterwards. Became a more progressive band and really evolved into incredibly talented musicians...especially Daniel John's as a vocalist and guitarist. Unfortunately the US wasn't ready for music that was way ahead of its time.
Daniel Johns was a grunge singer in the 90s but then he kinda turned pop. Really talented guy even if I don't love everything he's done. The song Emotion Sickness would be a good one to review, I think. It really showcases his range.
He's actually pretty much an R&B artist these days. I preferred the first 3 albums as they were part of the soundtrack to my teenage years but certainly understand the change in direction. Who would want to stay playing the music you wrote as an angst ridden teenager when you've outgrown many of your issues and become a global success as a musician? The later albums and his current music aren't my cup of tea as I went heavier with my tastes as they went lighter but I respect his talent as a musician.
Point of View is also a masterpiece : You’ll make it throughouhouuu with another poiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnt. That last part gives me the shivers each time
Really happy you chose to look at this. As an Australian, Silverchair's Diorama is my favourite Australian album of all time, although many Silverchair fans do not appreciate as it was such a deviation from their heavy rock roots in the 3 previous records. Daniel Johns was at the peak of his powers on this record.
He was SUCH a great vocalist & writer. Makes me want to cry. To me it's like beautiful sigh of relief from his health & emotional problems. And of course probably something with his father. He even told his band that he was tired of being so angry all the time. That he doesn't feel that way anymore. I think we can all relate. The feeling that it's time to grow up.
Saw them in concert shortly after the released Diorama and it was without a doubt, one of the greatest nights of my life. I lived for my love of Silverchair as a teen, and in my early 20’s I got to see them live in NYC. I’ve never been to a concert where the crowd loved the band as much as I did at Silverchair. Everyone there absolutely loved the band.
Definitely need more reacts for Silverchair! They changed so much over the years, maybe reacting to the changes could be interesting. :) Thanks for the great video!
My goodness, you really reacted to Silverchair??!! THANK YOU Beth! They were my favourite when I was a teenager and my brother had the chance to see them live here in Italy back in 1999. I was so sad when they split... Have you ever heard "Ana's Song (Open Fire)" by them? It's powerful. Also their album "Diorama" in a must. Daniel Johns has always been a genius to me and also an underrated guitarist. Thank you!!
I got to meet silverchair on March 26th 1999 in Vancouver during their neon ballroom tour and I still remember it as one of the most vivid memories in my life. I also got to watch their sound check, when Daniel sang paint pastel princess during that sound check my knees almost gave out.
I have to disagree I think this is the best track on the record and it was a beautiful way to close the album out. A lot of tracks made it onto that album that I probably shouldn’t have because Atlantic records wanted singles. Unfortunately some amazing stuff got left on the cutting room floor that was originally supposed to be on the album, like “Asylum” and “pins in my needles”
Daniel Johns is amazing. Silverchair's early work was very much teenage angsty grunge, but they grew over the course of several records into amazing songwriters with ranges in all kinds of contemporary music. Instead of just playing to the fans or selling out for money, they really honed their craft and welcomed growth in whatever direction it took them.
locustkllr yeah! It can’t be taken seriously people who just like Frogstomp and Freak Show. They are great albuns, but the songs from Neon Ballroom and Diorama are incredible.
Hey Beth! Have to say that's great seeing a video of yours talking about Silverchair. It's such an underrated band! I'd recommend you to watch EMOTION SICKNESS (Live at Sao Paulo) and any 2003' Tuna in the Brine performance. I'm pretty sure that you're gonna be impressed!

And it's interesting that they started at puberty age with puberty voice in their first album. With this album however, they created their own genre.
Wot Wot I agree with ‘World Upon Your Shoulders’ showcasing his amazing vocals. It is haunting and I can’t help but think of Jeff Buckley when I hear the live version of this song at the 2002 Big Day Out.
@@ronesss33 thanks for the reply. It's also interesting that Daniel started with puberty voice on their first album. You don't see that timeline often.
Got a tear in my eye listening. Amazing song with so much emotion. I was 2 years older than them at the same school and witnessed the torment they got from everyone out of pure jealousy. I canhonestly say I feel the emotion in it as I reminisce
Daniel Johns is such an incredible artist!! The way you define his vocals on this song it's really precisely,at least for me. loved your reactions hahhaa
I would really love to see you react to their song "Emotion Sickness live in Duesseldorf." It is one of the most heartbreaking and moving performances I've ever seen (the complete opposite of what you just watched). Just a few years before this performance of "After All These Years," Daniel Johns suffered from near fatal anorexia. Somehow, he managed to produce amazing vocals despite experiencing horribly painful degenerative arthritis in his jaw. The thought of losing the ability to sing was the major force that got him to seek help. Anyways, it's a beautiful and impactful performance that I think you will enjoy.
You should listen to all their music from Frogstomp to Diorama. Every single song on these records is unique and doesn't resemble any other song. Absolutely amazing songwriting throughout those four albums. Sadly after that they took the modern Indie Pop/Rock path and became completely boring and irrelevant.
Did you know ana's song is about his battle and addiction with anorexia. I always liked the song but took a whole new meaning when i found this out. If you werent aware of this go listen to it again you will understand it better.
It's the first time for me to see someone give a reaction to Silverchair. I listened to this band a lot when I was teenages and yes their original genre is grunge. Thanks because its reminds me back this cool band that I was listened before.
Masterpiece Presentaion, Masterpiece Song, Masterpiece Album, Genious Artist. This harmony and melody takes us to the most unexpected places in our mind
Daniel johns is a completely underrated musician. The older he gets the more versatility he shows and artistic he becomes. Forget the popularity drop off:as far as talent he is amazing
Daniel John’s is easily one of the greatest vocalists of not only our generation but like, of all time. Seriously. It’s insane how that comes out of a person. We are all so lucky to have him!
thanks for reviewing this... he is SO underrated, and so much more than some Kurt Cobain wannabe... i was so lucky to catch silverchair live 2 nights in a row on this tour... and after the second show actually hung out in the lobby bar of their hotel, with Daniel, Ben & Chris and have a few drinks... felt compelled to give Daniel a hug as we wrapped up the evening... such a gentle soul, and just ridiculously talented... really wish he'd return to writing stuff like Diorama-era silverchair... it is sheer brilliance from start to finish, and to this day amazes me and gives me goosebumps...
Daniel John’s is an amazing music magician. His music is breathtaking and at times so unusual. I just love him and his wonderful songs, he is a genius ❤
I adore that you listened to this song. Daniel Johns and Silverchair's music is absolutely gorgeous, genius and definitely unpredictable. The entire album this song is from is a masterpiece (Diorama) and he translated very complicated music live with emotion very well. Thank you for listening! Tuna in the Brine is another song from Silverchair that has interesting chord progressions and beautiful lyrics and is genius too ♡
Diorama is one of the most criminally underrated albums of all time. Also Thank you beth, these are amazing, especially these sort of non pop ones (periphery, charles bradley, anthony green) apreesh.
Your reaction with that sudden change in key. ☺️ I personally love Daniel's tune. His chord progressions are unique. It's so wild, jumping in and out of key, but it always sounds beautiful.
Subbed because you were so shocked by Daniel Johns. He's amazing. 💜 As others have already said, Emotion Sickness from the Neon Ballroom album is really amazing.
I’ve been waiting for someone to react to Daniel he is my favorite singer ever and silverchair is in my top 5 I’m so happy you did this I think you should look at emotion sickness in sao Paul or the performance in Melbourne it is amazing you need to check out their entire discography it’s great
Oh I'm so glad you've done Silverchair!! Ever since you started these grunge bands I was hoping you'd choose them!! And this is actually my favorite song of theirs! Not their most popular by a long shot, it's definitely one of their more obscure songs and it's not taken from one of their more popular "grungier" albums either. I thought for sure you'd do a Frogstomp track (which are also amazing in a totally different sense), but I'm so thrilled you chose this one! Daniel is one of the few who can actually "sing" (though I don't think this was honestly the greatest representation- which is odd because he's one of those who sounds the same live as he does on the album) and he's been doing this gig since he was 15. They were just three 15 year olds playing around in their garage when they won a radio contest. That contest led to them creating a chart topping album (written entirely by Daniel who was, again, only 15) and touring with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Now I almost wish you had chosen a Frogstomp track so you could see the genius level music these kids were producing! Their story and evolution is actually really interesting and I really love them as a band as much as I love them for their music. Surprisingly, Daniel is actually doing R&B now in his solo career, and even more surprisingly, it's insanely good and it's critically acclaimed (though Silverchair fans disagree lol). I really didn't set out for this to be a novel, I'm so sorry for that lol 🤦 But honestly, even if you don't watch it to react to it and it's just in your free time, look up 'Tomorrow'. It's the song they won their contest with and it's so good!
L Blincoe I only have to hear the start of this song and the tears start to form. The lyrics are so beautiful and I pray that our ‘broken son will be whole again’ soon 😞
You're completely right!! It's all over the place, it brings you up then back down with minor notes. It's a rollercoater within 3 minutes. That's pretty much Daniel Johns all over. Legend 😁
This is the funniest vocal coach reaction I ever saw. Don't know what to do with his vocals. Honestly, one of the most underrated bands of all time. Diorama is a masterpiece.
@@charlesw4316 I'm not a fan 9f it either lol. It's really not a good song especially when you take into account all there other work, even from just frogstomp alone its nowhere near the top
@@charlesw4316 you guys are out. As a song writer i can tell you that a 15 year old kid, probably 14 when he wrote it, putting that together in a studio is madness. It shows enough finesse for someone of any age, and it's a super catchy song. All my friends like it and alot of them don't even go near 90's rock that much (but the ones who are all about it love it too) it's iconic.
@@haydengoodman9525 Plenty of people have made decent studio music. Even with the best production, it wouldn't save how comical and cringey his voice is there. If I was to put that on in the car, we would all be laughing. If he was 14 when he wrote it, that's probably the best card he can use.
Absolute magical performer! To me, he is a world treasure and highly underrated musician. I loved the way he evolved his music every album. There are few and far between none that compare to his talent. Loved your reactions to the rhapsody.
What I love about Daniel is that the first CDs are só naive and later he just blew it all away making very ambitious and orchestral stuff, but at the same time, keeping his voice honest enough not to go too technical. He's been through anorexia, and during my Teenage years Silverchair's work was the only thing that could keep up with my heavy depression. I'm glad he's doing better, and I wish I could thank him for opening up that much.
I pressed "Like" before it even started. Diorama is indeed (puposely?) a somewhat uneasy materpiece, and during the show you can tell how (too) much Daniel pushed himself with the vocal riffs (e.g. Across the Night, World Upon Your Shoulders) but the legacy of the album is something that cannot be disregarded, and this song is a tiny but powerful piece of evidence of how a musician never gives up their curiosity. Thanks for giving it the chance, Beth. Perhaps you shold try and find some time to listen to the whole album, and if you can, pay attention to the band's unusual evolution.
Daniel Johns is an Australian musical genius. Beth, I hope you get the chance to check out more of his solo work, electronic/dance work with Paul Mac (as The Dissociatives) and some of the original Silverchair band's grungier material from their younger days.
@@milisha98 I reckon he changed a bit after being with Natalie Imbruglia, and had to adapt to having arthritis in his hands, but he definitely has a lot of musical ideas gojng on in his head. He's been through quite a bit of stuff in his life from quite a young age from memory.

I remember I had the same reaction when I first heard that vocal line at 5:17 and again at 7:05 - love that guy. He breaks my heart, truly.
Oh wow! Waking up to a reaction to Silverchair! Daniel Johns has more creative talent stored in his little finger tip than I’ll ever have.
I have seen lots of live shows over the last 35 years and still rate this one as my all time favourite. Daniel is amazing
Beautiful voice, beautiful man.
I love Silverchair and Daniel Johns. This song meant so much to me in high school and helped me overcome so much depression and anxiety.
thanks for reviewing this... he is SO underrated, and so much more than some Kurt Cobain wannabe... i was so lucky to catch silverchair live 2 nights in a row on this tour... and after the second show actually hung out in the lobby bar of their hotel, with Daniel, Ben & Chris and have a few drinks... felt compelled to give Daniel a hug as we wrapped up the evening... such a gentle soul, and just ridiculously talented... really wish he'd return to writing stuff like Diorama-era silverchair... it is sheer brilliance from start to finish, and to this day amazes me and gives me goosebumps...
Daniel John’s is an amazing music magician. His music is breathtaking and at times so unusual. I just love him and his wonderful songs, he is a genius ❤
Yes!! More Silverchair please?!
Miss you love!
Daniel Johns will go down as the most under-rated singer ever.IMO hes one of the greatest.
Ahhh! My favourite band and probably favourite singer, I never thought you'd cover them!!
I'm so happy you reacted to Silverchair. Cheers from Japan!
Please react to Tuna in the Brine or Across the Night, also by them.
Thank u for react yo Silverchair! Daniel is one of the best singer! And he is so underrated
An amazing songwriter at such a young age. His softer stuff has aged so well. EMOTION SICKNESS still a favourite.
I’ve been waiting for someone to react to Daniel he is my favorite singer ever and silverchair is in my top 5 I’m so happy you did this I think you should look at emotion sickness in sao Paul or the performance in Melbourne it is amazing you need to check out their entire discography it’s great
Love Daniel Johns! His vocal range was phenomenal 💚❤️💚❤️
The entire album diorama by silverchair should be dissected by people who understand music. Because it is pure genius I’m certain of it.
One of my favourite vocalists, composers, bands in the world. All of their work is so underrated.
Daniel Johns has an amazing voice.
Body and Soul
Daniel Johns, Daniel Johns
Reid Garwin SAME
If you don't react to Tomorrow by Silverchair, you'll be doing yourself a disservice.
His voice is totally awful in that song, good God. Gotta reach for the radio every time I hear it.
Charles Walker wow really
I waited for a long time for videos like that!! Very good
This album was well ahead of its time ,it's superb
What I love about Daniel is that the first CDs are só naive and later he just blew it all away making very ambitious and orchestral stuff, but at the same time, keeping his voice honest enough not to go too technical. He's been through anorexia, and during my Teenage years Silverchair's work was the only thing that could keep up with my heavy depression. I'm glad he's doing better, and I wish I could thank him for opening up that much.
Daniel Johns is super underappreciated. His vocals are stellar. Emotion Sickness is another great one to check out.
Really? I just thought he went a bit weird with and after the Dissociatives. I've tried to like his newer stuff but can't get into it.
@@milisha98 I reckon he changed a bit after being with Natalie Imbruglia, and had to adapt to having arthritis in his hands, but he definitely has a lot of musical ideas gojng on in his head. He's been through quite a bit of stuff in his life from quite a young age from memory.
You need to hear him sing Smells like teen spirit. It’s amazing
How I miss silverchair. Daniel pls make a comeback!
Love silverchair!!! More more more more silverchair pleaseeee little beauti girl ;)
