Looks like a lot of fun! I'm in brother thanks for inviting me :-) 20 mins seems deceptively easy lol especially when you're working to tight specs for sure.. Good luck to my fellow competitors
Dan's attempt was so British. Step 1 - put steel in fire.... Step 2 - good sip of tea.... Step 3 - complete task I'll have a go for sure. It'll have to be with the gas forge due to Australia's very rigid fire bans at the moment, but I'll definitely have a go. I expect I'll be WELL down the bottom of the leaderboard, as my forging style is built on the rule of "slow is smooth, and smooth is fast". But I'm interested to see how it turns out!
Well done Dan. 20 minutes is a crazy short amount of time when you look at all the different things that need to be done. I'd be proud as hell of 20.15
This is too funny, this morning during Blacksmith Church, someone asked the question as to what would be the next Blacksmith Challenge. And here you are handing out a good one.
I'd need a begginers category as so far I've only made tongs........ and I'd need to make some more tongs to make this candle holder......... and finish re building my forge....... I think I'll aim for an hour and claim bonus points for any seconds I get under that time!! 😂 It does sound like it will be a fun competition, good luck everyone 👍👍
Great challenge!! Cool to watch you guy's work under pressure. I'm a total newbie to blacksmithing, just made my first forge and about to start making tools, I will have a go at this as soon as I've made the gear to do it.
Thank You for the interesting and educational video. I enjoyed it greatly. I do not have all the skills needed for this project. You are a remarkably good Blacksmith, IMHO. Thank You for sharing so freely. This Novice really appreciates how you share the craft with us. Thank you again...
Just forged one from 5/8" (16mm) square bar - getting all the measurements right took a BLOODY LONG TIME! I'll definitely be making more though - very fun and beautiful project - first ones for my sister's birthday. Thanks again for the great video!
That comment at the end spoiled it for me Daniel. "Watch me panic like a girl" I know loads of men that panic:( Will not be competing but loved the making of the candle :)
My grandfather had an open fire in his cottage and at either side the were two big hand forged fire dogs and two candlesticks, like yours but with integrated rushlight holders. I was told they were mediaeval.
Браво, мастер! Из пластины отковать пруток - это очень практично.😊 И ещё. Мой тебе совет. Сделай наковальню на пару дюймов повыше. Тебе будет легче работать. А то ты постоянно в наклоне...
Hi Daniel Great idea. Just watch John Switzer participation in to the challenge Good some how as a viewer you can fell the pressures .Better that some videos game's 😉
LoL, I did a practice run yesterday. At the 30 minute mark I realized I didn't have a drift for the candle cup. So I spent the rest of the day making one. The weather is foul today so hopefully I can get back to this challenge this coming Friday or Saturday. Lots of fun!
I'm a new subscriber. Really interesting challenge. I just watched John from Black Bear Forge do his. I was cheering him on! Lol! Thanks for the Great Video!
That is pretty cool and a fun little project. I'll have to re-watch it later cuz I didn't get to finish the whole video. I made it to the 20:38 Mark and I'm out of time. Cuz I got somewhere to be
Hi Dan, thanks for the video. Very interesting, being able to use the basic skills and turn them into a nice looking project. Will have to put that one on the list when I get my shop up and running. 👍⚒
I'd love to do this! I'll have to pick up the appropriate stock and do it next weekend since the day job doesn't allow me to get to the forge during the week days.
Very nice and challenging project for my skill level. Made my first one in 3 hr + with a failed forger weld. Tried a second attempt tonight got as far as completing the cup in 1:24:16. Going to get a blacksmith friend help me with the fire weld see if we can get it to work. Do you know what the propose of the spike is? Thanks for all your videos, learning a lot. Hi! This challenge is great :D I had a go today, untimed and unfilmed. I guess it was at least 45mins, more likely an hour or more! :D Pretty happy with the result for a first try though. Will make a few more and see if I can get close, doubt I'll get 20 minutes!
I love this project. I watched this and a couple of the challenge videos. Immediately went out to the shop and made one. Took a bit longer than 20 minutes lol but turned out very nice. I see that this project came from a class but I was wondering if there was any actual documentation for this being a 14th century replica?
Not enough experience or equipment for the challenge, but will try to make similar with what I have just to see if I can. However, my dear bride would behead me if I let it drip wax on any of her furniture. SO, I'll perhaps try to add a bowl or shelf as a wax catcher.
Nice cahllenge, I may try to do it without time limit, just to know if I'm able to make it, it probably will take a a whole day to do it. I wonder if I could make it with 16mm round iron bar
Getting that done in 20 is crazy, forging something decent in an 30 minute crash and dash challenge that’s clean and decent is hard enough. I’m crap at getting things done quick
Hi Daniel hopefully you'll get your time and quality there. thanks for all your very educational videos I'm just learning to be a blacksmith. the reason I'm writing is I'mwondering if you know what has happened to Natan Baker? i enjoyed his videos as well as yours but he hasn't posted anything for a long time, is he okay? Thanks Steve from new zealand
I was told to reach out to you by one of my subs. Said there was a candle holder challenge or something like that. Dont know how to get ahold of you otherwise.
Great candle holder and great idea. I'd love to have a go at it but I'm in-between shops and the new one won't be up for another month. Plus, I'm pretty sure I can't do it in 20min anyway. Lol. But I'll definitely be making some of these just for fun and use. One question, how did you drive it into the wood? did you pre-drill a hole and then just stick it in as hard as you could or was there hammering involved?
Can I use my children's understanding of 20 min for my challenge? It'll take a week or two to I get back to my shop but I'll give it a try, no guarantees I'll get close enough for a real entry.
Wow, that is tight :-) When does the challenge end? I'm currently deployed and will be back home in Spring... Cool challenge and I wish all participants good luck!!
I am thinking of making the candle cup look like a leaf and maybe putting a twist in the stem. I bet the 20 min limit is just so they don’t hire a newbie dilletant hobbyist- such as myself.
Foul! Them measurements ain't in my ruler, I'm living in the USA. Just watching John Switzer but he handle the metric system petty fair. No I am not mad and the tapes often do give both metrics and USA. But our steel would vary in size . Still a good challenge. Did you do great thanks for showing Sir I also enjoyed Mr. John Switzer video

We cant do anything properly without a sip of tea 🤣
Hahaha so true. Best of luck dude I know you can do it xz
Can't believe this only has 14k views - excellent video, subject craftsmanship

Great project, Dan, even for those like me who aren’t in the challenge. :). Thank you for sharing and giving me something new to try.
I will give this a try. Should be a fun challenge. I need to go back and find all those dimensions again. Thanks for the challenge Dan.

Oh this is such a super cool idea. Congrats to you for coming up with this. Well done.
I’d love to get in on this, however I’ve been put on active duty orders and will be gone for a bit
I would like to know more about what you got hanging on the wall there.
Fun project. I am going to try this but I have not forge welded anything. I will be happy if I can do the weld
Best of luck love to see how you get on. Please let me know.

Beautiful! I've just made a few candle snuffers, and have been looking for a candle holder that can be done with my current skills/equipment.
I'd love to do this! I'll have to pick up the appropriate stock and do it next weekend since the day job doesn't allow me to get to the forge during the week days.
Amazing can't wait to see how you do. Good luck email me if you need any help.
@@danielmoss2089 I will do this through the RUclips channel for my forge. It's small at the moment.
Nice job on it I wouldn't mind giving this a try haven't much much cance to do any forge in competitions lately.

Can you please post a link for the drawing?
Thanks!
Please email me and ill send you a copy of the drawings
Hello Dan, nice project! But, I did not understand, what ist the vertical point next to the candle holder for? greetings Christoph
Me either I just copied the drawings. It migh be for bigger candles? Any guess it's based of a real object fyi.
@@danielmoss2089 Thank you!
Nice- thanks
Wow, 20 minutes is really a tight time frame. Curious to see how the nominated people perform. And anyone else who is willing to take the challenge.
It really is I'm hope they all do better than me.
Enjoyed the video. What is the purpose of the spike adjacent to the candle cup?
Excellent as always. When you gonna get some color in that Koi?
My friends kids coloured it one and me and the girl friend decided that we will leave it till we have our own kids and a box of carola hehe
Nice challenge Dan I will have ago but that depends on the weather cos baby its cold outside : (
Can't wait to see best of luck

Haven't got any normal stock that thick, but have an offcut of ball bearing damascus 🤔 🤣
Do it!
I worked on it today. I couldn’t do that in 20 minutes if my life depended on it.
It sounds fun but I know for a fact that I'm not fast enough to compete so I will offer to be a judge if you will have me
