Fire Emblem Weapons So Terrible I Question How The Series Got This Far

  • Fire Emblem has forged hundreds of weapons across its three decade long life. Some are total bangers that are useful for the entire game, others are absurdly powerful and provide game-breaking stat boosts. The ones today though, they suck.
This video talks about weapons from Binding Blade Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn, Fates, Three Houses and Engage. This is only a handful of bad weapons in the series. Let me know what bad weaopons you know of!

@Faerghast One Blade you could definitely mention, especially in GBA games is the Silver Blade. In those games it's just +1 Might compared to Silver Sword and weighs 13 compared to Silver Sword's 8. But the biggest flaw is the hit rate, in Binding Blade it has 55 Hit versus Silver Sword's 75 and in FE7-8 it has 60 hit versus Silver Sword's 80. So +5 Weight and -20 Hit all for 1 more might. It's horrendous to witness. (Though thankfully Engage actually made the Blade as well as the other Smash Weapons actually feel like they hurt both in animation and raw might, so it put some respect on their name)

Isn't Wo Dao actually uniquely terrible in Engage? It perplexingly lost its identifying feature of less power but even more crit over the Killing Edge, now sporting less Mt AND Crit than the Killing Edge, but also requiring higher weapon proficiency and needing to be forged from Steel Swords instead of Iron like the Edge. It's lighter and more accurate, but it's just so weak that trying to fish for crits with this thing is a shakier prospect than ever, especially with Maddening's enemy bulk.

I'd actually argue that all three fire tomes are not that bad, and have niche use cases. Aside the fact that tying lances in weight is not totally unsalvageable unlike axes, as lance users are common, they are still surprisingly workable. Bolganone still has 20 MT, and while Leif usually ends up getting Tornado, it is often Azel's children's best weapon; it's BIS for Azel!Ced and while both Azel!Arthur and Azel!Tinny can use Thoron, there is only one copy of Thoron obtainable. Elfire is usable by Azel before he promotes, being a workable boost in firepower. Fire, while otherwise bad, has a niche use case by being Julia's worst weapon; have her put all of her stuff in the convoy save for a Fire tome to minimize her threat level as an enemy in Endgame.

    Some more honorable mentions:
FE9 Tornado. You're telling me I trained up an A in wind for a 4 MT weapon that while effective against fliers, still has a comical 12 MT.
FE7 Gespenst. Take Gleipnir and get rid of the +5 SKL boost. Thats Gespenst. Aside from being available only in the Endgame, it's so comically heavy that Canas needs literally every single Body Ring in the game just to not get doubled by the Fire Dragon, and if you're bothering to do that, you deal more damage by doubling with the already bad Fenrir. And lets not forget the broken FE7 Luna tome. At least Veronica did the spell justice... Vio Rhyse Alberia!
FE5 Hammer. This thing has 10 MT, 50 Hit and 18 Weight, in a game where armors are at their squishiest until FE16. PCC and magic swords all hut invalidate enemy armors, who due to the low enemy growths and overall low enemy quality, are lucky to break 15 DEF, at which point stuff like Brave Sword, Silver Lance and the like kills them. Even the many armor bosses are easily disposed of with more reliable options like Tomes, Armorslayer or PCC as weapon triangle is effectively non-existent.
FE4 Silver Axe. Unlike the Iron and Steel Axes, which are surprisingly good for their acquisition time by being powerful enough to 2HKO enemies reliably, the very powerful Brave Axe or the Hand Axe, which while bad is at least a rare source of physical 1-2 range, the Silver Axe is just flat out bad. The Brave Axe is accessible by the time the Silver Axe rolls around, and only 2 units per generation can even use the damn thing, and in both cases, the Silver Lance is just better. Brave Axe is better as a means of WT-ing enemy Lance users, and the Silver Axe's one niche use case as a wallbreaker for Leif to use on Arvis (as the best candidate to go up against him if other Holy Weapon users are dead/too squishy and Tyrfing was lost due to a lack of fliers) it is overshadowed by the Silver Lance, as the Axe is too heavy to double with the Speed Ring (Silver Lance outperforms Brave Axe as Brave Weapons in FE4 are treated as always activating Adept, making the skill itself redundant; this ends up causing the Silver Lance to have a higher damage average against Arvis).

    • @ness6099
      @ness6099 2 месяца назад +9

Tornado has 6 might, so not as bad but still painful. What’s worse is you’ll probably still be slowed down while using it, as Ilyana’s not getting there and Soren is so pathetic strength wise that you need 3 lucky 5% growths on normal mode and your promotion to not be slowed, and heaven forbid you’re playing on fixed mode, you might get 1 strength growth the whole game!
Elthunder has more might and 10% crit on it and comes with Ilyana in Chapter 8. Yes it’s heavier, but Ilyana and Tormod have a strength growth unlike Soren, and if Soren’s doubling something with a 3 or 4 speed penalty, he’s probably also doubling that thing with a 4 or 5 speed penalty.
The biggest loser tome wise is probably Rhys with a pitiful 2 might D rank light tome. You don’t want him seeing combat anyway, and his promotion only gives 1 strength unlike Soren’s, so if he’s not lucky he’s being slowed by 3 points. On fixed mode he has a much higher initial strength growth count, so 1 strength growth before promotion is possible, so… Rhys only gets slowed by 2 when using a D rank tome after promotion… yay?

I'm surprised you could narrow it down to just one weapon in Fates. Any weapon above Steel felt like such a detriment in the long term.
The stat nerfs felt like less of a balance for durability and more of a buff to enemies. High attack power with a severe drawback fits perfectly for disposable cannon fodder enemies, but does not synergize well when you want to keep your units alive.

    • @rattyxoxo7397
      @rattyxoxo7397 Месяц назад +1

I think another contributing factor as to why Silver Weapons are seen as so bad in fates is because (in Conquest, the hardest route) you get no free silver weaponry, so you’d have to buy it, in which case you might as well just buy some more iron/bronze weapons and make a strong forge for a comparable price without the drawbacks. If you got some for free, as you do in Rev, they then at least exist for players to evaluate whether they need the might of silvers or the lack of side effects of iron/bronze weapons. It also hurts their viability that fates can have so much class changing for skills, which makes teaching high weapon ranks fairly impossible for a lot of units

    • @Castersvarog

It’s insane just how bad anything silver and above are. It would be one thing if the debuffs didn’t stack repeatedly, at least that would make for a good risk vs reward, but the fact that you can completely annihilate your damage because the enemy phase happens is maddening. And that’s the silver, the S rank weapons are absolute garbage.

    • @rattyxoxo7397
      @rattyxoxo7397 Месяц назад

@@Castersvarog honestly I think the stacking debuffs on silver weapons really works at distinguishing them from the other weapons as a high might player phase option that punishes the player for using them unwisely, much like how durability does by limiting usage of stronger weapons. The issue is that they are expensive and forging ruins their niche of high might because a forged iron weapon does everything they can for significantly cheaper and without the side effects.
I also think the S rank weapons get a bad rep. They for sure are hard to actually use because of how fates handles it’s weapon ranks, but they’re just extremes of silver weapons where their high might is actually sizeable enough over the competition that it may make a difference with what’s arguably less of a downside since the half strength effect alternates each combat when their in use. It also helps that for every S rank weapon that halves strength the wielder has to be in a class which gives that Weapon-Faire, which is important because the cut to raw strength ignores damage from skills, alongside pair up, rallies etc. Ignoring the more basic Hagakure Blade and Aurgelmir which are just high might weapons, the side effects of the other S Rank weapons are also fairly impactful, with the Waterwheel being a higher might Guard Naginata, the Chakram effectively having Seal Str, Mag, Def and Res, the Pursuer and Excalibur being high might with Flier effectiveness, and the latter also having high base Crit and Hit. The real issue is how late you get the weapons, but in the case where you do use them they’re truly interesting in their respective niches

The funny thing about slim weapons is that the retooled 'training' weapons as your lightweight option aren't half bad in the Houses context with hard to negate weight penalties early on, and the upgraded version reducing weight and increasing durability further. They are dirt cheap too.
At one point I also got use out of the hammer setting up kills for weaker units abusing it's weight, but that was on NG+. I suppose it's nice to have a fallback option to smash up fortress knights though. It's niche, but it can work as advertised, especially with the other axes being missable.
Houses also does have the notoriously useless venin class weapons, having a seperate set of ore for just iron weapon stats at higher costs and poison just not fitting the needs of the player at all. Devs didn't get the memo of not bothering to give the player them at all I guess?

Otherwise spamming or using silver on enemy phase has huge consequences on your units offence, just as much as brave weapons are for their defence. Imo its a much more interesting way to limit the use of silver weapons than limited durability

They chose Lapis to use Smash because they know a lot of people train up sword masters in their games, park one at an entryway and use their dodge rate like one would be using a general's defense to "negate" attacks. Smash is there for them to push back an enemy and place a more defensive unit like Timerra with "Ike" Ring in front of the enemy phase. I'm not sure I've liked either character, but that's there to teach players, "Hey, you know how you used to have dodge tanks with sword users? Well, you can't do that as much now unless your character is closer to a hero with enough defense to ignore some actual damage if it hits you. Break system will make them drop their sword if they get hit cutting down their stats and making them unable to counterattack." The only exception, as some people have shown in Engage already, is Kagetsu because he's their literal middle road character with enough capability to do what a sword master could do, dodge and strike back.

I've found almost all of the non-brave or otherwise very special weapons in 3H to be worse than a forged training weapon. The higher weight cost and lower accuracy is just not worth it. Quite often it's the training weapon that deals the most damage anyway, because it doubles when the others don't. And they're dirt cheap with lots of durabilty too.
Primarily they would have needed to lower the weight across the board or (probably better) have the weight reduction from strength be every 3-4 points instead of every 5 points.

You use combat arts most of the time if you're using well built units anyway. Having a training weapon on hand can be nice for units like Catherine, Petra, Byleth, etc who rely more on raw stats but they can still easily double mid speed enemies with heavier weapons. Also if you're having hit issues weapon prowress and hit + 20 from archer goes a long way, and isn't hard to pick up on anyone who does physical combat if you try to grab it. I often find myself wanting D bows on anyone who does physical combat anyway just to have 3 range in case, so going to D+ isn't much extra.
Generally of course I like to have a training weapon on most units just to have something to use to finish off something low without wasting durability on something better, or if they one round anyway with how squishy enemy mages are.

Several people already mentioned that weapon trianle does matter for Leif, but something else that needs to be mentioned about the master lance is that it's actually NOT the weapon prioritized to be equipped when played correctly. And "played correctly" is surprisingly not too hard to do.
One thing Adaptability factors after counterattacking, weapong triangle and effectiveness damage, the third being irrelevant for Master Lance, is the weapon value. Weapon value is calculated by weapons mt+hit+crit+avo+ddg, and because Master Lance's horrendous hit, a base Javelin and Spear will both be prioritized over Master Lance. So as long as you don’t engrave it to lower the weapon value, a lance user will never have to suffer Enemy phase Master Lance. Not that this makes Master Lance any good, but it's worth noting when you are actually using Leif.
I guess I should mention that due to this reason I like Timerra with Leif because as a Picket not only she's Lance user, but she's more meant to be a defensive unit who actually likes making use of Arms shield. Also extra build is always nice on Timerra. I can't deny that Sigurd is probably still a better Emblem than Leif for her, but Sigurd is more contested among units than Leif, so there’s definitely a room for it.

It's not *bad,* per se. You can potentially get use out of it if you're lucky. And if it was on a higher Skill unit, it'd be amazing. But it's on Eduardo, whose stats look less like a cavalier and more like a fighter, and that hit rate is *worse than the game's Steel Axe* (which is 65). It's going to miss. A lot.
That said, if you save up your Secret Books...

I played a fates mod that reduces the downsides of S rank weapons, and I think units with those weapons are basically lategame jagens. They can 1round, if not 1shot a lot of bulkier enemies and help other units get kills with dual strike, or using 3 range weapons with dual strike to cheese bosses.

I literally grinded the best Great club I could for my girl Scarlet using the DLC fightathon that was added, gave her the skills necessary for a Vantage crit build since her special skill increases her crit rate when she's low on health. The Great Club adds more crit at the cost of hit rate and by grinding the club and forging it higher I increased the hit rate.
General Scarlet with a +5 Great Club and +5 Defender Spear made her tanky as hell and hit hard. I'm so proud of her.........too bad she only lives in Birthright.
I would use Silver weapons but they suck terribly, debuffing stats is not a good idea to use in a FE game.

First of all, I'm surprised Fates' Nosferatu wasn't on the list.
Using the Mine glitch to give a bishop access to Dark magic allows Gleipnir to actually be somewhat useful. And while Ginnungagap's debuff could be removed with a Dual Strike, using Replicate to make both the normal attack and the dual strike at the same target results in you never getting the debuff in the first place (provided the target lives to take the Dual Strike hit).
Doesn't change the fact that it sucks though.

Because Nostanking is still good in Fates. Of course not as strong as in other games but Conquest Odin with Nosferatu can tank a lot of stuff in the early game. Even on Lunatic. And even in the late game it's decent. Fates Nosferatu is still pretty good.

to be fair there are very few cases were you will be attacked at 2 range by a sword in engage since levin sword enemies are pretty rare, the bigger issue is that I'm pretty sure leif will also equip it if attacked by a lance at range if you don't have any 2 range axes in your inventory, the main problem is honesty the awful hit and damage as there are actually units who can when conbined with leif's build bonus equip the master lance without losing speed or only losing a little bit
a common theme definitely seems to be that any weapon with bad hit is awful unless it's a game were you can fix it somehow like forging or engraving

  • @skynet0912
    @skynet0912 2 месяца назад

I don't understand what it is i'm doing differently from everyone else, but i never seem to have problems with Leifs master lance in Engage, even on Maddening... Sometimes it messes up, but just knowing that it can happen, also makes it very easy to avoid getting in trouble with it too. And honestly, i think Adaptability has saved me more than it has screwed me, especially when i forget that enemies can have both 1 and 2 range attacks, and the weak might of the weapon avoids me suffering from success when enemies start stacking up chain attacks.
I think the only strange thing i do in Engage, is that i never allow broken combinations of engage skills on my characters, and only allow stacking the same stat boosts like Build on Leif, on top of being engaged with him. So if i put Leif on someone, that person is only allowed Knife Precision and Build as inherited skills (as they are the only ones that stack). So it might be because my Leif user always ends up with a +10 Build buff, i can't say for sure, but it seems to work just fine for me...

FE1 Iron Lance: same might, hit, and uses as a steel sword, but 2 more weight and only 1 lower weapon level requirement. Not awful but almost useless as most lance-using classes can also use swords.
    FE3 Javelin: 20 weight, 70 hit.
GBA steel lances are just bad in general, but they're at their worst in FE6.

I honestly think the fates' s-rank weapons are overhated. They're not the most efficient to use just because they are each locked to a single class and it takes significant effort to get to s-rank in fates alongside low availability, but the weapons themselves are honestly decent options when you can use them. They have genuinely massive might that you aren't going to match with a forge unless you grind for a LONG time, since the cost to forge grows exponentially with each level. Each of them also has bonus stats alongside their might that add some utility to them (ranged weapons give +5 effective speed, hagakure gives you avoid, waterwheel has def/res, aurgelmir has crit). The downsides hurt (durability for the ranged weapons, halving strength for melee) But it's worth noting that the halved strength effects does not apply to skills. And considering 5/6 basegame classes with an s-rank weapon have a faire-skill, that's going to help out your damage. As mentioned in the video, you can also use attack stance to remove the debuffs. On the other hand however, attack stance doesn't proc the debuffs, so you can have ally units temporarily switch to the legendary weapons to give allies very strong attack stance hits without any downsides.
They aren't fantastic, and availability isn't good outside of revelation, but I think they are more usable than a lot of people give them credit for.

I haven’t played all games and I’m no expert but from the ones I have played:
FE7-Most of the weapons from the last chapter especially Sol Katti, Durandel and Gespenst All too heavy for anyone to use effectively.
FE8-All Dark magic, though Glepnir was terrible I feel it applies to practically every dark spell in a game where Anima is more reliable and light is pretty much broken in the hands of a Bishop not to mention sages and valkires can also use it means dark magic was dead from the start. Awakening- Glass weapons
They took the meaning to a whole new level with these ones literally 3 uses.
    Fates-Literally every silver weapon
It was easier to use a refined Iron or steel weapon than deal with silvers dumb mechanic
Echoes Venin weapons but particularly the bow poor might terrible hit rates gimmicky mechanic and rarity that almost rivals the relics literally no need to use them.
Three houses is a hard one but I have to agree with the hammer I literally never used it but there was also that bow that was locked too Mercedes’s crest in Dimitri’s route I can’t remember its name but I never used it.
Engage- the S rank bow who’s name I can’t remember
Much like most of its type you get I stupidly late not to mention it’s too expensive to refine when I a +5 steel bow worked way better.
Also I’ll probably never play Thracia 776 so could someone tell is the master lance good in its original game?
I know it’s bad in engage but I always like using it just for fun.

    3. Increase his Dark to S

They made changes that meant that proper balance _required_ good thunder magic, then nerfed mages in general, but _especially_ thunder magic, into the abyss. The splitting of mages into three classes _already_ addresses some of the balance issues with thunder from PoR, so that was just dumb.

I'd say that the Master Lance definitely deserved that title in Engage, nothing really justified using it over either a spear or a brave lance aside from a small crit chance. Engage is very heavily player phase oriented with skills like Canto, Seadall being a dancer that you'd put in every time you could, and Byleth's Goddess Dance Engage Attack really meant the Master Lance was simply taking up a weapons slot in your inventory that you couldn't remove. I'd also put down Alear's unique sword Liberation since at base it is just a slightly better iron sword, but it has ridiculously good forging stats.

You can get some meme use out of Gleipnir if you use glitches to get monster weapons (which count as no rank Dark ) to give your Bishops a Dark rank. Gleipnir isn't double effective against monsters like all the other Sacred weapons, but with Slayer it can be triple effective! (Ivaldi is actually slightly weaker than Aura with Slayer, but it is substantially lighter and could be used by Sages who don't have Slayer).
Even this isn't that great, unfortunately since it's just so heavy. Getting 69 MT for one hit is cool, but doubling with Ivaldi would be 68 total MT anyway, so unless the monster has a ton of Res or you can't chance a counter it's a vanity thing.

The Wayward Lance from Echoes is also pretty bad, especially for a DLC weapon. Mostly because it only has 70 hit in a game where (at least in my experience) hit rates are shaky as is. That and Heaven or Hell being a terrible weapon art, making your attack either crit twice or miss twice, while also lowering your hit by another 30. The only thing really saving it from being complete trash is it’s got decent might (3 at base to 10 at full forge) and good crit (20 at base with 30 at full forge).

To be fair to Thoron in Radiant Dawn, all Thunder magic was nerfed badly in comparison to Path of Radiance. In PoR, Thunder was the high-damage/low-accuracy element, contrasted to Wind's low-damage/high-accuracy. But for some reason with RD, they swapped the damage and left the accuracy.

Fates S rank martial weapons and Ginnungagap are weird. On one hand, the REALLY GOOD characters that can take a hit or survive a few rounds of combat without getting hit don’t mind the half-attack penalty, because they ideally will be shoving themselves into enemy lines and constantly fighting. They’ll be at full power for half these fights.
On the other hand, said characters have Prf weapons that are just as busted, negating the need to put S rank weapons on them.
Imo the Silver weapons there are still the absolute of trash over the S rank weapons. You get worn down WAY too easily and the stacking debuff murders your combat prowess by the time you halfway reach the end of the battle.

The rest are actually solid choices. Failnaught is an extemely powerful longbow, Blutgang is a more powerful Levin Sword at 1 range, Sword of the Creator has 1-2 range, Thunderbrand has higher durability and the brave effect, and the rest are all accessories, and therefore have nice and unique effects that make them better to have than your average Hexlock Shield.
Probably the worst one is Crusher (Annette's weapon). You can only get it in Dimitri's route, it's heavy and for a magic unit like Annette, this weapon isn't worth using at close range. And its combat art isn't as strong as a lot of the other ones.

Bolting has a big track record as a fearsome spell to see on enemy units, especially bosses... and then there's Radiant Dawn, where Bolting is... frankly, really bad. Compared to Path of Radiance, RD Bolting has -7 might (!!!) as well as 19 weight. For that matter, the other long range spells got similar nerfs. As an extra kick in the nuts, Bolting MUST be stolen from enemies... and there's only three chances to do so... and on top of that, one of those is in the 5 part endgame, and its user has nothing else.
