    Whether you’re a fan of the Rolex Submariner or Omega Seamaster, Weekend Watches with Tim Mosso is your deep dive into the world of luxury watches.
    Rolex watches always figure prominently on the show, because no online vendor has more pre-owned and vintage Rolex models than www.thewatchbox.com. Today, we feature a yellow gold Rolex Submariner, a yellow gold Rolex Daytona on a strap, a Rolex Sea-Dweller SD43, and a Rolex GMT Master II “Batman” with black-and-blue bezel. All four watches are core collection models for Rolex of Geneva, and the newest model line among them - the Cosmograph Daytona - still traces its roots 56 years into the past.
    Omega watches are Rolex’s eternal rivals, and today’s program showcases three Omega classics. Fans of dive watches will appreciate both a 43.5mm stainless steel Seamaster Planet Ocean and a fan favorite, the 42mm “James Bond” Seamaster Diver 300M in stainless steel. Aviators and fans of NASA space history will enjoy a look at the original Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy,” the 2003 model year limited edition of 5,441 pieces. The classic Omega Moonwatch morphs into a canvas for Peanuts creator, Charles Schulz, thanks to a careful image transfer to the caseback and dial of this Speedmaster limited edition.
    Patek Philippe sports watches never have been hotter than they are right now. The Patek Philippe Aquanaut here styles in uncommon rose gold. A new brown-black gradient dial with spectacular sunburst grain livens this strap-mounted Patek Aquanaut. For devotees of complicated watches, a Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph - the 5270G - impresses with both beauty and class-leading engineering. This descendant of the Patek Philippe 1518 represents the 2015 dial iteration of the 5270, and the “chin” has been tamed without eliminating the sporty tachymeter scale from the dial.
    Bulgari’s surging Octo Finissimo collection maintains its momentum with our 50-piece 2017 limited edition Bulgari Octo Finissimo Revolution, a special series designed in cooperation with Wei Koh of “Revolution Magazine” and “The Rake.” The ultra-thin titanium watch measures only 5.3mm in thickness, and the manufacture Bulgari caliber BVL-128 sports impressive finish and custom Revolution graphics.
    Collectors of German watches will be pleased to see two of Glashutte’s finest, the Zeitwerk in white gold and the Langematik Perpetual in rose gold. A decade removed from its watershed launch the jump-hour / jump-minute Zeitwerk digital watch remains a masterpiece of imagination and mechanical engineering. Practicality and romance receive equal billing in the Sax-o-Mat powered Langematik Perpetual calendar.

    Tim - I’m going with the Rolex Sea-Dweller over that Omega Planet Ocean. If money is a factor, the Omega is a very nice choice. However, money not being an object, The Rolex 50th Anniversary Sea Dweller with Red text - that watch is simply special!

    The noticeable offset between the date indices on the Zeitwerk always bothers me when viewed at anything other than dead-on. This isn't a problem on the Lange 1 or other grande date Langes, so I wonder why it still persists?

    • @the1916companywatchreviews
      @the1916companywatchreviews  4 года назад +1

      The minutes? It might be that you're reading them as a date rather than a digital time display.

      @@the1916companywatchreviews Tim, my bad - I meant the minutes display. The right digit appears to be set further back than the left (tens) one and looks misaligned when viewed at an angle. That doesn't seem to be a problem for the big date displays, though I understand that the minutes wheel requires more places (6?) and thus is more difficult to implement than the simple cross piece used for the left date index.
      PS - hope to see you in Singapore soon. Cheers!

      I pushed hard to film a comparison of the two this week, but the Yacht-Master was sold out from under me. Having reviewed both watches, I liked the Rolex better. It feels more substantial, the movement is tougher, more accurate, and longer-legged, and the rotating bezel is useful. With the Oysterflex bracelet, the YM42 as a whole better reflects recent investment in product quality than the unchanged-for-12-years Aquanaut.

    I just wanted to say I love this show. You are doing a tremendous job Tim. I would like to ask your opinion (and that of someone who feels inclined to reply obviously).
    As I recently graduated I've always had my eye on the seamaster 300 (the spectre watch, but the normal edition). Would it be a good idea to buy an unworn/secondhand(?) watch or would you advise me to buy a new watch at a certified omega dealer? I've had my eye on this watch for over a year, and I wanted to buy this watch for myself, as a present for graduating university.
    Any thoughts?
    Much appreciated for your reply. Thanks!

    • @the1916companywatchreviews
      @the1916companywatchreviews  4 года назад

      Congratulations on your graduation, Elias! I recommend getting the SM300 used due to the substantial depreciation and the five-year warranty. Get one a year old or less, and you'll pay over a thousand dollars less than new while receiving four years of warranty -- more than most watches purchased new. Moreover, there is tremendous selection on the pre-owned market for SM300 buyers, so you'll have no difficulty finding one that's fresh from the dealer and complete with its boxed set.

    One of my favorites here was the rose gold Aquanaut. Now that’s a big deal for me, as usually I don’t like the Aquanaut nor rose gold watches in general (with the exception maybe of some two-tone Everose gold and steel Rolex’s). But the combination of the two here just works! I was a childhood fan of Peanuts and I still find Snoopy very endearing, so love the Peanuts Moon Watch, this and the other one (who wouldn’t? 🙂) That Blancpain is a monster! Never seen that model before. Also really liked that movement on the Portuguese too.

      I share your enthusiasm for that Aquanaut. The 5167 isn't a favorite of mine, and I prefer white metals, but the rose gold with this particular dial amounts to a more appealing watch than the standard 5167A. And yes, that particular Portuguese and its movement add up to a watch for the ages.

      Awesome! Omega (Grandpa's De Ville and my graduation SMP) is the only brand that features twice in my watch collection.

      Just one mm less diameter and lose the Helium valve and the Sub would be blown away for good!
      I'd still prefer it to the Rolex if I were looking for a sports watch.

    Bezel sound Rolex vs Omega. I own many of both and have had some back “lash” with Rolex but never with a Omega Planet Ocean. Omega clicks to its spot and has zero lash.

      I've had a few people relate tales of Rolex bezel play, but it's not something I've experienced firsthand. At some point, I need to see this for myself to form an opinion.

      Isn't that thing special? I love the model and all it embodies. In the future, I hope to film a "precision olympics" episode that tests every accuracy-focused model in order to determine the finest overall mechanical watch for fans of pure chronometry.

      @@the1916companywatchreviews Tim, that's the big question - for all the amazing complication and coolness factor, is it actually more accurate than a mass-produced machine-made Rolex or Omega? But of course if accuracy was the main criterion we'd all be wearing Grand Seikos 😁
      Anyway, I look forward to the 'Chronometry Olympics' episode, but will you allow Spring-Drive? 🤔

    Considering the relatively small number manufactured, it's surprising how many FP Journe pieces we see for sale.

    • @the1916companywatchreviews
      @the1916companywatchreviews  4 года назад

      We own more Journe than all factory boutiques combined. The main distinction is that we tend to target rare, discontinued, or vintage examples.
      While we buy all brand aggressively, ownership has a special interest in buying and holding the Journe pieces.
      There's an element of speculation, to be sure; we rarely buy watches to hold long-term, but the Journes you see on the site and the channel tend to be watches acquired with a view to letting their markets ferment prior to our marketing efforts.

      @@the1916companywatchreviews Tim, thanks for your detailed reply - I'm honoured. I guess that by now WB can afford to be selective in the brands and specific pieces you buy, and take a strategic approach to developing the market. Maybe I'll be in the market for an FPJ soon, but for me De Bethune is still way out there 😁

    Being an owner of both the Omega and the Rolex (DeepSea version) its a difficult decision......but I do find myself reaching for the Rolex slightly more. But my Planet Ocean is just wonderful. But that Sea Dweller.........oh that Sea Dweller.........perfection.
