I preferred the the stippled no washes method. It gave a more washed out red that went from almost ruddy brown to bleachy coral and seemed the most "cloth-esc" of the bunch. Personally, I would love to see a "Green 3-Ways" tutorial video with a twist, Green Skin, Green Armor, and Green Cloth. Each of these requires a unique method for both execution and finish that I feel would not only be particularly useful in a number of applications, but also likely highly malleable for other hues. Great tutorial as always and thank you for posting while busy on the road.
Oh now that is interesting! I really like the ethos behind it, just covering the colour thoroughly in different applications. Would it be more useful if it was the same colours used in each one, to see how it worked on different parts, or different colours each time? I'd have to recalibrate my brain for the thumbnail :D
@@ArtisOpus I think that it wouldn't have to be the same colour across the board. There are many colours, though I feel green is particularly good at it, that can be both warm or cold, shadow or highlight, smooth or textured, both life and death. Green is so malleable with the addition of other colours, undercoats, or washes that I feel it would be a disservice to pigeon to a single hue. Now, if you use the same green across the video and add other colours or treatments to show how flexible a single green can be with the other colours of your library as a foil then I can see that pulling things together in a nice tidy AO video package. And you'd also be able to flex your favorite green Flesh, "Metallic" Armor, and Cloth in the process. Thanks for listening and can't wait to see if this sparks anything for you.
Great tutorial! I'd love to see a three method video on fire... what's the best way to handle the transitions, the highlights, and the shadows. It doesn't have to be the typical red-orange-yellow fire either. Bonus points for including your take on OSL effects!
Good call, a lot of people seem interested in this. We do actually have a video on realistic (backwards highlighting up to black) fire here: ruclips.net/video/JeZxcOgBwRc/видео.html
Hey Byron and others! It would be amazing to see „3 ways to make reflections on your minis” especially how weapon can make a reflection on armor, and vice versa, how glowy objects such as mushrooms, lanterns and many other can be reflected on other elements of miniature etc. Im sure you know what i mean. P.S. Your job is amazing, thank you for this channel guys. I kinda can’t wait for next video right after watching the newest. It happens everytime bruuuuh :D
The effect your speaking about is called object source lighting. OSL. If you want to search for examples of the technique, there is some out there for sure. A good idea for a video though, you have my vote!
I think it would be great to have a 3-way NMM video, copper and gold. I've just attempted NMM for the first time on an icon bearer in copper, it looks ok but needs refining. It be would be great to see how you would approach it.
First and second are my favourite. I would like to see some contrast schemes for the insides of capes, different Cape colours and inside contrasts in the future would be great. Good job 👍
@@ArtisOpus not lazy champ, I paint all my mini's before I put them together so I just notice the inside more. And it is one of the things I look at on others completed models.
I'm always amazed by how effortless you make this look! I think the stippling one might have been my favourite, as it looked so smooth. I see several people have suggested OSL already, so how about three ways to stone and interesting rock or marble effects on bases and scenery (beyond the usual grey)?
awsome techniques all 3 are great , they will help me a lot doing my sisters robes, and mostly i will gain more speed with thoses techniques, great work..❤
I'd love to see you tackle a three ways of doing rust and a 3 ways of doing verdigris but incorporate things like pigments, liquid pigments etc into them I'd also like to see some kind of brush vs dry brush challenge where we see how Byron's stipple/drybrush blends compare to what he would achieve using an airbrush. Maybe something like a Star Wars Legion AT-ST would be cool for this since it seems to be a solid go to demo model.
Haaa, that is interesting! Me duelling myself! The 3 ways suggestions are solid, it's frequently needed stuff, and people worry more about pigments than they should, for sure.
@@ArtisOpus I just think you duelling yourself would be surprisingly helpful. I have had a set of D for around 18 months and got my first airbrush around that time time and still find myself struggling to decide which tool is best for the job, so that kind of guidance and example on what can be achieved with each and when you prefer to use each would be super helpful! :)
I would love to see 3 unique ways to use inks/transparent paints as primary techniques. I am starting to tinker with them but haven't moved them past the shade/contrast methods.
I've just used metallic paints for the first time and there are loads of videos on NMM yet there isn't any that show you how to use metallic paints correctly and how to wash them to get contrast and make them dirty and anything else to add some depth.
@@grantklover3301 Got you, this is a cool idea, there are definitely some that people know about and use often, and others that barely get touched, and are way more forgiving than people think
have your tried painting a 1:35 scale miniature figure ? would love to see you posting your result if you decide to. Figures aside, it looks like method 3 is the best imo
Another great video, I’ve been mini painting for many years and find these techniques fascinating How about adapting this style to do a quick human flesh painting tutorial I think all three of these techniques could produce some interesting skin tones & colours Keep up the great work
Hey there, that's a good idea, we've got a fur video, but it's not a speed techniques one, I would also perhaps pick different models if we did another. Thanks!
I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I would love to see some videos on doing metal 'filters'. Ie green or red metal. Im guessing we can just use a wash over a nice metal/silver. But would to see how you do go t.
I think perhaps producing a metallic 'bible' video would be a good idea, go over the fundamentals, and then show what it is like with various filters/approaches over the top
I would love to see a suggestion on how do OSL out of bones for undead models. Be it the glowing souls shining out of eye sockets, or undead mages wielding necromantic magics I would love to know your take on how to do glowing bones!
Great video. I've been looking for a quick way to paint Adepta Sororitas robes, and this has me excited to try method 2. Which red did you use for the basecoat?
As already said on the teaser picture: I like the stippled one most. But after a second thought, I'd add that the extra 'drama' of the contrast one might be a good choice for a standalone showcase piece as well. I'd be interested in a similar tutorial for tan/beige cloth but I'd really like to see how stippling and drybrushing would work on Seraphon Saurus Guard or the like, cuz' I love their cyan colour 🦎
Nice man, it definitely seems like a good one, could even do a 'cloth 3 ways' and then show a way to make any of them look old and haggard. Thanks dude
Hey dude, yeah we have, we have one for cloaks, and one for shields :) they're fairly old though, so maybe could do with an update/power armour equivalent.
For a three way video, I'd love to see something on Turquoise armor - Something to show differences between smooth, and clean armor, like you get on eldar, Dirty and roughed up armor, then, im not sure what the third could be in that set.
3 great ways but each results are cool. i prefer the first with contrast because i use it a lot but for an awesome result i think the best for me is mixing with stipple to finish ;)
There may not be a vast amount of call for this but im about to tackle a few squads of seraphim/zephyrim and I would really like to do something a bit different with the clear plastic supports holding the model in the air. 3 different ways to go from base up to model would help make those parts of these models look less generic?
Mhhhm, hiding flying stands is a thing, I have similar thoughts about how they look if you're not creative with them (if they are in the same army a lot).
@@ArtisOpus indeed. I have the past tried to blend from green into sky blue but it looked terrible. I have an air brush now for this attempt so the blend may look better but I still feel that's quite a basic attempt. Any creative inspiration you might come up with would be well received :)
In the fly past of the Enterprise in ST: The Motion Picture the hull has a 'so -called' pearlised finish to its paint job, could you look into pearlised effects and ways to achive them. I'm sure there must be specialist paints, but can it be 'cheated' in any way?
@@ArtisOpus i'm wondering if pastel colours/or shades etc could be applied wet-on-wet to a coat of lamian medium. I don't know, I'd have to trust to your expertise to find ways of doing this...
I believe a 3 ways to do purple would be of great help. It seems to be the hardest colour for me to get an effective "range" of colours in. Always seems to come out the same. Either too violet/pastel, or too dark/plum.
Brilliant and useful video as usual. I really liked the effect from the Shade/Wash technique. I'm going to give this a try on my Etheral model. For a 3-ways suggestion you could perhaps do a Skin Tones tutorial. This could be human or fantasy / alien tones to mix it up.
@@ArtisOpus Another idea popped into my head last night. In your army critique video you explored different eyes. Perhaps a 3-ways on this topic? Evil goats/lizards/snakies 👍
Gosh how much I missed your videos! Gonna try on my next project! I'm going to print the Guardians of The Galaxy in 3D and I might just find a good way to paint Star Lord coat =P
Three way video on how to do different quick bases for quick army schemes. Pushing bases to the absolute limit with lots of techniques that are easy to replicate for 40+ minis would be a good tutorial. you can also make it into a series "3 more bases for your army"
Good idea man, I am an army painter at heart, and this is absolutely my speciality, so I'd be happy to help people with anything to speed up and improve the quality of their army basing!
Love the idea of drybrushing and then using contrast paints. Was trying this on some Cursed City rats as a start. Was to careful with the drybrush so after using the contrast paints there could have been more contrast. :) And good idea trying the contrasts on a palette. Is obvious but i really didn't think about it when painting the minis. But giving them a final layer seems totally neccessary if you want to get good contrast. Really nice vid. Thank you.
As a next vid I'd really prefer osl / glowing. I'm acutally painting Sylvaneth with a lot of runes or these ghostly guys in their branches. I'm also tried one on a lava base (if you want I could send you a pic - but I guess that would be more of how it does not work. :) ). But the glowing effekt doesn't really work if there is no real "light"-reflection. Looks ok but somethings definetly missing. Questions I'd like answers to is (aside from how is it basically painted): * What needs to be considered regarding the color of the light? * Whats important to get the "glow / light" feeling? * Is there a diffierence in osl on armor or cloth? If yes, how do I get a result having both on the miniature? And is it neccessary to do the difference? * What about the different strenghts of the light? e.g. a rune on a stone may be a weaker lighting than a campfire, a lantern or a spell. I hope you get the idea. :)
Hey dude, OSL is a great idea, it's definitely something people struggle with, and quite a few people have asked for it. I do, the breakdown was really helpful, though, I'll refer back to this when we get to making the tutorial to make sure I have covered all bases.
3 ways of doing dragon/reptile type skin would be great. I am currently painting a huge dragon and the base, wash and drybrush method seems too flat for the size.
We already have done both of those :) ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=how+to+paint+power+weapons+artis+opus However, we could do power swords 3 ways, in 3 different colours, I think that would be a great video
There are a few to choose from honestly. Scenery/bases hasn't been done for a long time. 3 ways frozen/arctic. Was going to suggest Teal 3 ways, but someone beat me to it. So, what about chrome, with and without metallics? "Realistic" water for scenery 3 ways, without using resin/water products. (Sorry Byron, no easy suggestions tonight :'( ) As for the best robe. The middle one is what I'd use.
Haaa, they don't have to be easy to be good suggestions! There's some good stuff here, I like the idea of the same colour with, and without metallics, that's very interesting...
Not really, *but* you can absolutely drybrush under them, then use them as a filter over the top :). We have a video coming out soon, a big one, it covers the topic extensively!
I would like to see 3 ways of painting a BattleTech mech. It could either be 3 different styles (a heavy weathered one with battle damage, a pristine one out of the factory, and and in between), or three different palettes (flashy colors, muted\dark colors or metallic, and cammo pattern).
I'd really love to see 3 ways to do non-white skin tones, I find it can be really hard to get interesting and varied skin tones. I also see people mentioning 3 ways NMM but 3 ways to do metallic metals would be really helpful to get an interesting look without the hassle of going full NMM.
Hey there, as alwas thank you for theese videos, they are always a huge contribution for painters. My suggestion for a video in the future is "3 ways to do female soft skin using drybrush technique". I have not been able to do decent pink soft skin and i have tried many times to no avail. Usually i paint more grimm dark miniatures, but that doesnt mean i dont own female miniatures that need to get a more stylized soft skin... and they usually look like another space marine in the end :(

Curious question: Method one, Lahman medium, any reason for that over contrast? I presume it's more being used as a heavy glaze, even glaze then pulling into recesses?
I am just very used to it, when I am doing weird stuff I tend to stick to safe territory, but contrast medium would be absolutely fine for sure. I should definitely be more aware of the technical differences in their properties...
Slightly off-topic question - I've been looking at your brush set and palettes but I couldn't find anything on the site or this channel about how the palettes should be used (i.e. prime, cleaning, etc.)...do you have an intro video on your dry-brushing palettes somewhere? 🙂
Hey Kevin, we don't, but I did record one a bit back, we're going to release some more product videos very soon to help support them with FAQs like this. Regarding your questions specifically: Cleaning isn't needed, and you just re-prime with whatever your favourite primer is, and start again, whenever you like! I prime chaos black, if my paints cover it well, then they will cover my model well, and re-prime after each project is finished, as a fresh beginning. I will make sure we upload some of the product videos ASAP
@@ArtisOpus that would be awesome - I'm sure I'm not the only one waffling on whether to spend the bucks on the palette and brushes to see if it can help improve my game LOL

You're not the first to ask this, nor will you be the last, good idea!
Correct, and I agree, it's a good one, also I have been practising recently!
Haven’t checked other comments tbh :) But thank you for OSL name, i’ll check it!
I would love to see a 3 ways rotten flesh/ normal flesh tutorial. I really enjoyed watching this video and it was very helpful😁.
Father nurgle would be pleased with this, and I think a lot would find something useful in a zombie/nurgle/other(?) 3 ways tutorial.
I think it would be great to have a 3-way NMM video, copper and gold. I've just attempted NMM for the first time on an icon bearer in copper, it looks ok but needs refining. It be would be great to see how you would approach it.
Solid idea, this for metallic and NMM would be a useful resource I am sure.
First and second are my favourite. I would like to see some contrast schemes for the insides of capes, different Cape colours and inside contrasts in the future would be great. Good job 👍
Interesting, I am lazy and just always paint mine black ^^, but this is a good idea, I should probably break that habit!
Here after using your white robe tutorial on my Emperor’s Children Praetor. But working on Fulgrim and need advice on red :)
:D
Awesome work, thanks for sharing! I would love to see your take on 3 way of doing Martian bases!
Interesting, like otherwordly colours, etc? Or slime? :D
I’m new to this hobby and would love to see a 3 ways to paint edged blades
awsome techniques all 3 are great , they will help me a lot doing my sisters robes, and mostly i will gain more speed with thoses techniques, great work..❤
Thanks 🥰 glad they are useful!
Love the contrast look and the vid is great too❤️❤️❤️
Hey Byron! I would like to see 3/4 ways to do hair. Blonde, brown, black, ginger even. Or a single color done 3ways.
Eeek, my weakness! I need a bit of practise at this, feels like I need to go away and attend some classes :)
I'd love to see you tackle a three ways of doing rust and a 3 ways of doing verdigris but incorporate things like pigments, liquid pigments etc into them
I'd also like to see some kind of brush vs dry brush challenge where we see how Byron's stipple/drybrush blends compare to what he would achieve using an airbrush.
Primary: first steps of a paint job, or beginner-friendly?
@@ArtisOpus I think beginner friendly. I know I would get a bit more out of that since they are a new addition to my tool box. Thank you.
3 methods of bone colours would be my choice, with variation in tone.
Got you sorted already! :) ruclips.net/video/INoWPtSbUtA/видео.html
I've just used metallic paints for the first time and there are loads of videos on NMM yet there isn't any that show you how to use metallic paints correctly and how to wash them to get contrast and make them dirty and anything else to add some depth.
Hey dude, we have loads! Check out our back catalogue. However I do think we are going to be doing a bronze silver gold 3 ways in the future
Can you guys do a three ways on color matching. Like red and green as an example
colour matching: 'classic combos?'
@@ArtisOpus yeah that would be cool! Or even classic combo, one stage removed and an "outthere" combo.
Another great video, I’ve been mini painting for many years and find these techniques fascinating
How about adapting this style to do a quick human flesh painting tutorial
I think all three of these techniques could produce some interesting skin tones & colours
Keep up the great work
Good idea, human flesh definitely isn't my speciality, we only really have one video on the subject, this should probably be fixed :)
Thanks for showing me this technique at Adepticon!
My pleasure, my dude
Love the "3 ways" series. I'd like to see 3 ways to make your model look like a comic book character.
O_o this is such a cool idea, could do cell shaded, black and white, and something else...
Now I just need to learn all of the above techniques... 😅😭
I would love to see 3 ways of tackling fur. Obviously adding more depth so the fur looks more realistic.
I think if we did an OSL one eyes would be a good feature, OSL eyes 2 ways (lenses and unnatural/magical) may well be a good way to go!
I think three ways of doing a glowing or red hot effect would be super helpful!
Great video. I've been looking for a quick way to paint Adepta Sororitas robes, and this has me excited to try method 2.
Which red did you use for the basecoat?
It's covered in the video, paints used timestamp. Mephiston/Pro Acryl
We could definitely do this, and it is relevant to a lot of colour schemes, thanks!
As I said in the video I think the contrast one is my fav :)
A “3 ways of doing old, tattered cloth” would be very nice!!😉 great video as usual💪🏻
Nice man, it definitely seems like a good one, could even do a 'cloth 3 ways' and then show a way to make any of them look old and haggard. Thanks dude
Love it. Have we done white? It's such a tricky color to work with, I think it'd be useful for a lot of folks
Mhhm, 3rd could be metallic, perhaps?
@@ArtisOpus Ohh, A Metallic Turquoise would be absolutely beautiful! Could be a perfect color for the necrons i just started building.
3 great ways but each results are cool. i prefer the first with contrast because i use it a lot but for an awesome result i think the best for me is mixing with stipple to finish ;)
I would like to see 3 ways to do cream armor, I am starting a deathwing army soon and want to see how you would do it.
Not a bad idea at all! Deathwing, Clean Warm Ceramic + Clean Cool Cream?
Yeah! Deathwing also has cream cloth for the characters, you could do a painting cream armor 9 ways video haha
I'd love to see three different ways to paint the tabards on Deathwing Knights!
Quite specific, we could definitely do one on white/beige cloth, though, it's a frequently needed colour for sure.
@@ArtisOpus It's the green cloth of the tabards in such relation to the bone white armor of Deathwing that makes them so challenging.
Interesting, I wonder if there's a pearlescent medium or similar...
You're not the first to ask this, I will ask Andy for a bit of advice, and see if I an get some practise in with it first.
@@ArtisOpus Thanks for the reply. Oh, and thanks for the pen with my last order. It writes quite well. :)
I am much more experienced with the crazy alien ones :). A good excuse to practise human ones for me though!
@@ArtisOpus Another idea popped into my head last night. In your army critique video you explored different eyes. Perhaps a 3-ways on this topic? Evil goats/lizards/snakies 👍
How about 3 ways of doing flame/smoke effects?
Not a bad idea, people are also asking for OSL, it would be nice to do a few tutorials that worked well together.
A 3 ways to do ghostly/ethereal effects would be awesome. Would time well with new nighthaunt and would look cool on loads of minis.
Well, with Nighthaunt coming out soon I would definitely love to have an excuse to do some ghosties!
Gosh how much I missed your videos! Gonna try on my next project! I'm going to print the Guardians of The Galaxy in 3D and I might just find a good way to paint Star Lord coat
=P
Pleasure to be back, dude :). And that sounds perfect, make sure to put the soundtrack on while you paint
I think using contrast medium instead of lahmian medium would make a big difference. Stahly did a good video on this.
Did you film this in your Adepticon Hotel room?
The entire thing? ^^ nope :)
Wow very nice no favoured all look amazing
Cheers, buddy!
Questions I'd like answers to is (aside from how is it basically painted):
* What needs to be considered regarding the color of the light?
@@ArtisOpus ty. glad, the breakdown helps. :)
Mario
3 ways of doing dragon/reptile type skin would be great. I am currently painting a huge dragon and the base, wash and drybrush method seems too flat for the size.
Hey I always struggle with the yellow. So a 3 ways on yellow armour or power weapons be interesting 🤔
We got you, bro!: ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=how+to+paint+power+weapons+artis+opus

Can you do powersword/ power claws, or the necron power to the weapons
We already have done both of those :) ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=how+to+paint+power+weapons+artis+opus
However, we could do power swords 3 ways, in 3 different colours, I think that would be a great video
@@ArtisOpus sorry do you have a non metallic metallic space marine armour
I would like to see a 3 way tutorial on how to do NMM on small areas that dont have enough space to build a proper gradient, like hands/gloves.
A good idea, I need to refresh my skills on this!
Thanks for this video. I would like to see for 3 ways for blue skin.
Tzeentch? :) You're welcome, buddy!
@@ArtisOpus For Frost Giant, undeads, Ghosts, Ghouls, Necromancer and Tau leader this would be helpful too.
Cool tutorial! Thank you!
Our pleasure, my dude!
(Sorry Byron, no easy suggestions tonight :'( )
As for the best robe. The middle one is what I'd use.
Haaa, they don't have to be easy to be good suggestions! There's some good stuff here, I like the idea of the same colour with, and without metallics, that's very interesting...
Can You drybrush with contrast/speed paints? I'm finding them too runny...
Not really, *but* you can absolutely drybrush under them, then use them as a filter over the top :).
We have a video coming out soon, a big one, it covers the topic extensively!
This is amazing! Thank you for sharing. Question... What pallet is that?
Thanks, Ryan, it's our XXL Palette (we ship worldwide): store.artis-opus.com/en-us/products/xxl-texture-palette-a3-brand-new-product-design
Can you do a tutorial on drybrushing a tank ultramarine style?
This is a great idea for a classic tutorial... I will have to build one first though 😭
@@ArtisOpus I can’t wait for the video to post, been checking in regularly lol
I would like to see 3 ways of painting a BattleTech mech. It could either be 3 different styles (a heavy weathered one with battle damage, a pristine one out of the factory, and and in between), or three different palettes (flashy colors, muted\dark colors or metallic, and cammo pattern).
I'd really love to see 3 ways to do non-white skin tones, I find it can be really hard to get interesting and varied skin tones. I also see people mentioning 3 ways NMM but 3 ways to do metallic metals would be really helpful to get an interesting look without the hassle of going full NMM.
Other metallics, copper, brass, and bronze. Always struggle getting them to read as such and differ.
Absolutely, this is definitely something that people struggle with (including myself), good call!
We need a video for purple cloths.
Hey there, as alwas thank you for theese videos, they are always a huge contribution for painters. My suggestion for a video in the future is "3 ways to do female soft skin using drybrush technique". I have not been able to do decent pink soft skin and i have tried many times to no avail. Usually i paint more grimm dark miniatures, but that doesnt mean i dont own female miniatures that need to get a more stylized soft skin... and they usually look like another space marine in the end :(
I also struggle with this, maybe it is time for me to go and get some tips from some better painters than me, and return bearing arcane knowledge 😅
@@ArtisOpus that would be awesome!!!!
Hi Bryon, would love to see a Blue skin three way tutorial. Ive got a massive army of Seraphon to commission and would love to see a great way of doing battle line troops. Any excuse for SWL models is a good one! 🥰
3 ways to use natural techniques like dry brushing etc to create a sense of scale in 6/8mm sized models ;)

@@ArtisOpus My varnish must be clear, since you've seen right through me.

@@duckdictator6531 noicee! I tested yellow Khorne ages back, from warm purple mid shadows and deep purple recesses, looked legit! Hope they turn out well! Yellow washes beautifully, especially.
@@ArtisOpus How did you do your purple undercoat if you don’t mind my asking?
