That's awesome. And this format is great. Just a quick 5 minute video, straight and to the point!
Thanks, I thought people would appreciate it
Hah! That’s exactly how I paint my reds… so nice to see a badass such as yourself do this, it makes me feel like I’m doing the right thing!
You surely are! Great job!
I love how to-the-point this tutorial is, thank you!
So simple yet so rich and detailed! I can't wait to get some paints and start my Order of the Bloody Rose. I haven't painted in almost 10 years!
Welcome back to the hobby!
We missed you 😘
Merry Chirstmas Juan! I started a Stormcast army because of your tutorial, you give me a Christmas gift everytime you upload a video
Thanks, Merry Christmas to you as well
Watching this whilst waiting for my sous vide rig and rib roast to come up to temp...
I can only hope that this serves as the low bar for you and yours, both to Juan, and the rest of the audience. Merry Christmas, all.
That sounds delicious! Have a nice dinner!
Amazing work with those colours, wish I had a cape to paint and practice with now, An army with that kind of attention to detail would look wow...
Thanks, that would indeed be a an army worth to look at
This is my go-to red paint cloak/cape guide. Absolutely great work and appreciate the work you do.👏👏👏
Thanks mate 😘
Awesome! Gladly that you Paint some Slaves to Darkness Models....and today i ordered my StD Start Collection 😁😁😁😁
Thank you for the really awesome cloak! I Go to repaint it! Your guides are sooo helpful!!!!!
Thanks mate 😘 good luck with those StDs
Great as always. Fits my style od painting.
When It comes to shading red I really like using base Red+green to get deep, desatursted Red.
Nice idea!
Yeah I got the green as a shade foe red from that Darren Latham red armor tutorial.
Otherwise I love using Wazdaka red for cloth, very rich, deep red.
Yeah, I used Incubi Darkness to shade the cape of my Specter Knight and it's beautiful
Green to get darker tone is effective especially when You want/have a limited number of paints.
Looks amazing! Always motivating me to paint. Merry Christmas Juan!
Merry Christmas
Great tutorial as always! Happy holidays ti you and your family mate
Thanks mate, Happy Holidays to you as well
Thank you , Juan .
🐺
😘
Awesome! Just in time for my Father Christmas army🎅🏼!
😘
Even after just the first 3 paint applications it looked great!
Thanks
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Well. I tried to copy this technique. Annnnnnndddd it came out terrible. I def need more practise.
Practice makes perfect, glazing can be challenging but you will get it right
Yup that is a ridiculously rich red. Very nice accessible short tutorial. Merry Christmas!
Oh and just an afterthought: did you ever post which brushes and squeezey paint bottles you use?
Merry Christmas!
😘
Yes several times.
Rosemary and Co series 33 size 3
And droppers from ibottles.co.uk
Thanks Juan, Merry Christmas 🎄
Merry Christmas 😘
all your work is beautiful
Thanks 😘
Easy and fantastic. Great video!
Thanks 😘
Wow! This is stunning! Great job mate! Happy Christmas!
Happy Christmas! 😘
Awesome. Will try this with purple
Awesome
Thank you! I love your tutorials ❤❤❤

Juan is the beast!
😘
Merry Christmas to you and yours and thanks for another helpful video!
Thanks mate 😘
Amazing as always !!! Thank you and Merry Christmas Juan 🎉😄🎊
Merry Christmas 😘
Merry Christmas! And thank for this little "gift"! I'm thinking I could use this for some really nice Red Dragon Wings, too!!💕😁😘
For sure you can!
Im Back after a long time of absence! wounderful recipe! Will try using this to my Stegadon flesh tone.
Awesome!!
Beautiful
Thanks 😘
Great video! Happy Christmas!!
Merry Christmas 😘
Very Nice. I love your base colors. You should do a tutorial for that too
I might do but it uses a couple of rare enamel paints and I always try to make videos that are as simple and accessible as possible and enamels don't fall into that category.
That was awesome
Thanks
the biggest challenge in painting in my view is nailing the paint consistency across all types of paint. it is allways different how much water is needed
I have a video on how I do it. Check it out, it's pretty good
Bravo. Brialliant tutorial, gracias
Happy to help
I wanted to do a dusk raider color scheme for my mortarion with a red cloak. This is perfect
Happy to help
Wtf. Where were you when i needed you several months ago???
I haven't moved from here
I usually do a glaze of blood angels red to have a more vibrant red and smooth some transitions and redo the last highlights.
That's not a bad idea but I decided to skip it here for a deeper red
so brush is dry and add as little paint as you can then you smudge the paint where you want it concentrated. that really helps
Happy to help
This is just incredible. May i ask, what would you recommend to use if i want a Rich Purple Cape?
Yes, watch my video on purple NMM, I would probably use that recipe but applied like this
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures ah of course, thank you very much, i wish you a happy christmas :)
Merry Christmas 😘
might give it a shot on my Captain with Master Crafted Heavy Bolt Rifle
Nice Idea!
I hate how easy this looks. because it is but it isn't at the same time. it looks amazing but it can turn out so bad with the wrong application. and I just dont know how you amazing painters do everything with a giant brush like that and get such fine details. just beautiful to watch
Thanks, it's all about practice and time. Anyone can do this
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures i know the video was only about 5 mins but how long does this normally take you to get this effect of youre just painting without recording
Probably 30 minutes or so
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
Beauty!
Keep up those "click-bait" titles, Juan!! Because these ARE "RIDICULOUSLY RICH RED" robes!!😝❤️❤️❤️
This is just the truth 😂
Just wow
Thanks 😘
Appreciate that this technique leaves the recesses of the cape a bit brighter than the surrounding shadow. I feel like this is something that should be explicitly noted though, as most tutorials I see on YT omit this detail entirely. Even though I feel it adds a lot of realism while still being subtle and rather easy to implement.
I am sure this red looks even more stunning in real live than on camera. Though i found that adding a light transparent filter of purple (the old warplock purple from citadel was great for that, but i'm sure there is a modern substitute) adds even more visual interest, especially contrasting with orange highlights. While (again) being very subtle.
edit: I used a similar orange for my highlights for a long time, but found that a slightly more muted colour like Tau Light Ochre feels more coherent on cloth for the final highlight, for reasons unbeknown to me.
P.S.: Please tell me when to stop. : D

Bravo
Gracias guapo 😘
Hello, amazing job! looks so easy!
Could you say witch bruches 33 series do you use. Would be great thx a lot!
Size 3, my favourite brush
I'm hoping you can help, I have two questions, firstly, how many layers of the Mephiston Red glaze should I expect to be applying to get to the point you got to? Secondly, when you do the edge highlighting, is it with the same glaze of paint or a slightly stronger mix? Hope you can help.
As many layers as you need, there isn't a number I can give you.
For the edge highlights, less diluted paint of course
Thank you, that's awesome.
I love your work 😊 how would you paint a member of the warband skyrar's' dark wolves in 40k 😊
Well they are mostly black so use the black legion video I have
what is volumetric adding?
Do you have a video on hownto glaze? I tried this lastnight and while i like the results, thought not nearly as nice as youre, i feel i wasnt able to get a good consistency for the glazing.
Yes I do!

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thank you!
Sigue considerándose clickbait si el contenido es merecedor del título?🤔
Genial, y el vídeo completo más!😋
Egu barrigon juan!
😘
Thanks! I was wondering if you wanted to add a fraying effect (I play Deathguard), what color would you recommend? I’ve used a drybrush of Zandri Dust.
Yeah, that sounds good to me yes. Any sandy colour will work very well
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures cool, thanks for the quick response.
Happy to help!
I have been putting off painting three red capes... not any more!
AWESOME!
How you create that perfect base layer of paint in one swipe is a total mystery to me. Especially since its a contrast paint..
I have a video explaining how I do it!
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures What video is this? Couldn't find one through the titles.
If you look for contrast technique in my videos you will find it
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Ah, I thought it was that one but I wasn't sure. Thank you. Amazing videos in general.
Thanks
Did you use any glaze medium on any of the paints? What was the consistency of the paints used?
No medium, just water. I recommend you watch the full length video where I go into more detail and I think I show the consistency used
ruclips.net/video/aw9iDiAGNmI/видео.html
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you so much! Could I use a glaze medium instead or in addition to water if I wanted more time to blend the lighter and darker colors?
Yeah! Adding medium is always an option and never a handicap
Gorgeous but I'd leave it after glazing with Mephiston was done. The effect Was better w/o further edge highlighting imo.
You are of course free to stop whenever you want along the tutorial but I prefer to go all the way in for that crispy Eavy Metal style that I personally prefer.
I’m new to painting - how does one thin down citadel paints? By the time I get my scoop of my second color my first is like 95% dried. I live in a very high alt with forced air. I’m just a bit adverse to messing up my paints. Any tips would be appreciated
First of all, get or make a wet palette, it's a game changer.
Secondly, I just use water to thin my paints, with the exception of Contrast and Shades that I use Contrast Medium.
Hope that helps
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures any tips on thinning with water? I guess visually? Is there a way to tell if it’s too thinned or what’s just right?
Bought myself a wet pal - heard all the news about them so I’m pumped to try it!
Hi and thanks for another lovely video!
I've been watching your videos for a while and I keep noticing the colors you use do you have set recipes for each colour?
Or do you just a spectrum of paints for example Red and you just move up or down the range of colours to suit the type of red you want?
The reason I ask is I'm not sure of I should develop my own separate recipes for bright, medium and dark for colour or a range of maybe 7-10 paints for each colour.
I don't have set recipes, in fact for each video I like to change the recipes just for the sake of not repeating myself.
Develop your own preferences and experiment
Thanks for another cool video! How did you get that flesh tearers red initial coat so smooth? I tried using it and I always get a splotchy mess!
Over Mechanicus it doesn't make a mess, it has the same colour over the highlights and the shadows, super smooth dark red.
As for lighter colours, you are probably using a too small brush or having too little paint on your brush.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thanks! Maybe I should try a different undercoat, I was using it more like a wash over red.
If you watch my video on Adeptus Mechanicus you can see it applied over a light primer and how to do it
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thanks so much for the advice and I’ll give that video a watch. I appreciate your time to answer my questions!
Happy to help 😘
Wonderful video as always, Juan! Rosemary & Co. says on their website that they can't ship Series 33 brushes to the US because of a ban on importing sable hair products. They offer their other two lines though, so I'll probably grab one of them. Quick question though; it looks like you're using "long" size 3 as your primary brush. Is that right and do you have any preference between long or normal length brushes for mini painting?
When they specify long or short they are referring to the handle.
Long is always for canvas painting, avoid that. It's VERY long
Is it a standard size 3 then? I love r and co but that's an especially good tip for the size
It is, a normal series 33 size 3, all of them that I get have the same tip. Exceptional brushes
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures they are. Especially for the price
Great vid, just a silly question: Do you paint the base coat over a your primed mini or is the basecoat acting as the primer? Edit: and if you use a primer, which one do you like?
This was just Mechanicus Standard Grey spray over bare plastic. That's a primer.
As for my favourite one, well, it depends on what going over it, but Greyseer and Wraithbone are as good as primers get over plastic
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures oh my bad, for some reason I didn't think that was a primer! I'll give it a go.
Merry Christmas, Juan! Feliz Navidad!
You uploaded this video just when I was about to paint the cape on the Red Guard from Gloomhaven. Perfectly timed gift, thank you!
A beginner's question: what if I don't have the two orange colors you use towards the end? Can I mix the two red layer paints you're using earlier (Evil Sunz and Wild Rider) with Jokaero Orange and use them for highlighting? Or maybe use the reds with some yellow, like Yriel Yellow?
You can most definitely mix them for sure
I would just add some yellow and some white (important to use both to desaturate the mix) to Wild Rider Red in two stages.
Hi! Usually what brush's size do you use? 1 and 2? thx
Rosemary and Co series 33 size 3
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures you're so so so kind! Thx so much!
well, my Minotaurs thank you, I was doing a poor job with baal red wash :)
Happy to help 😘
Chaos santa ?
Anyway, Merry Christams to you all
Merry Christmas! 😘
Is there a reason why you only use citadel paints? There are so many pigment rich colors to make vibrant red.
Well because, and I will fight for this, Citadle makes THE BEST REDS in all of hobby brands.
And by a very long shot as well.
People don't give Citadel enough credit, usually all the contrary (and completely unjustified BTW) but their reds are outright MAGNIFICENT. The only other red I ever use is Kimera The Red (and probably Scale75 artist range red since they use the same pigment) and to be fair to Citadel, Evil Sunz is just slightly less vibrant than the Kimera, the difference is so small that outside paint nerds no one will even notice it.
As for other hobby brands, all Vallejo's Reds are awful, pure sadness in a bottle and the red of the brands are in the same line although better than Vallejo.
The only way to get a better red is to move into artist paints and get Cadmium based pigments and I refuse to get those with a small child in the house and also I would never use them for the channel anyway because they are not accessible or affordable to everyone.
Is it a new series? BLASPHEMOUSLY BRIGHT Blue cape next? XD
Lol, might end up being. I just think it's funny. In fact I made it's own playlist called "Hyperbole"
Nah, who am i kidding. The next one must be GORGEOUSLY GLOWING Green
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures True story. That's how i started collecting orks :D
Orks are fun!
What does volumetricly mean in this context
Means the same as in every other case, highlighting the volumes as opposed to just the edges. I do also highlight the edges but you get the point
i used to like cape painting but i suck at it so bad its not even fun. i have no idea what im doing with it. it just doesnt make sense to me. concentrate towards edges in layers is obvious but it just doesnt work liek that on capes
Being able to render cloth in a realistic way is VERY difficult so don't feel bad about it.
I recommend you take a look as what historical painters do, they are the true masters of painting cloth
Make blue cape plz
(¬_¬)
Maybe
I know you hate it hehe but i need that color for my high elves from warhammer fantasy unless you can make another color work for my high elve prince and mage i love your videos
Do you have a patreon? Please tell me you do. Edit: Found you. See you there mate!
Thanks, that means a lot
Yes, indeed. Red ones go faster.
😂😂😂
there is quicker way : be Juan Hidalgo ;)
Well, that's not necessarily quicker. It took me 38 years to get there
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures and you are what ? 35 ? ;)
I wish, but I'm from 1983 mate
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures that was the joke. You are so good, that your painting art is older than you
I think it's overall too dark toned imo. The bright red needs to take up a bigger percentage of the cloth. This comes across as maroon with bright yellow light highlighting the highest edges (making the dark red appear orange ish red)
All it's missing is you licking your brush seductively...
👅👅👅
