This video took me over 40 - 50 hours to put together when I include filming, editing and painting the miniature. If you want to support what I am doing here, consider subscribing to my channel and giving this video thumbs up. Thanks! 👊 EDIT: Guys, as always you can combine stippling with other blending methods! Many of you mentioned that it might be good to stipple basic gradient and go over it with a few glazes - YES! Definitely go and do that :)
The fact you do this in under 5 minutes sets you so far ahead from many other creators. I love a detailed 25 minute guide to study, but if I'm about to do something or need a refresher this format is exactly where I go. Keep it up, do everything. Thank you!
I really appreciate the "in under 5 minutes" approach. You explain the topics quickly and precisely, making your videos super valuable as a reference to watch again if needed. I guess my next Space Marine will be painted with this technique for practice ;)
I was just coming here to say this. This is my second video of Zumikito's that I've watched, and I subscribed after the first (Painting volumes). Not every tutorial video has to be for absolute beginners ("This is a brush. This is paint. This is how I assemble the mini. This is how I prime" *20 minutes later* "Now, let's talk about [insert technique]". I also love the comparison shots to other techniques, so you can see how the two techniques vary and produce different results. Super useful both for planning your army, and identifying different techniques for different textures. If I had the discipline and motivation to make videos, these are what I'd aspire to, with one tiny difference. I'd paint two minis each time with the technique. One mini would be an "ideal" mini for showcasing the technique, and the other would be a "standard" mini that is identical every video. The standard mini would have to have a number of different surfaces/materials on it. The "last" video of the series would be to showcase all of the painting techniques side-by-side on the standard mini, with a final one painted with multiple different techniques based upon what looks best for a given surface across the techniques. It'd probably be really tiresome to do, painting the same mini over and over again, but what a great resource. As I said, I lack discipline and motivation, so I know I'll never get around to it. I welcome, nay encourage, anybody else who sees this idea and thinks they can pull it off to do so.
I've been away from the tabletop gaming and miniature painting scene for a few years now, and back when I did paint minis I usually went for pretty safe and simple approaches like basecoat/wash/highlight. I've bought some minis over the past year and I think it's time I get back to painting and try challenging myself with new techniques like this. Love the videos.
Keep doing your 5 minute videos! You're making some very difficult topics easier to approach for many viewers. I also loved your bases idea. Simplicity is great, but making sure it's actually simple is the best. Keep up your work! I very much appreciate it.
Will definitely try this out. Blending has been a big hurdle for me and this might actually help me big time since I'm garbage at it. Keep up the great work!
ive not painted since i was young.....that would be 30yrs ago lol. been getting back into painting last couple of months which brought me to this channel as i looked for forgotten knowledge, stippling is a technique i never tried before but thanks to this video im going to be giving it a bash. huge thanks for your videos and help.
How do you not subscribe to this guy? I've watched so many painting tutorials and while they're great painters, this guys is, by a wide margin, a much better teacher
I always get Irritated when youtubers remind me to subscribe.... but wtf the reminder actually reminded me that I hadn't subscribed yet and should have a long time ago... love the vids!!!
After seeing this year's Golden Demon entries, and the heavier reliance on stippling over glazing, I decided to look into the technique more. Who comes up first on my search? The Z-Man, naturally. I think I've now watched the video a few times over the years, and it's a wonderful, clear, concise overview of it. I have a free mini of the month ready to try this after I finish glazing my Kommando kill team. I appreciate what you do, man.
Hey man, I just wanna say, I was a little skeptical about this technique. Not so much in the sense of "Oh, this won't work." and more in the way of "I don't think I can do this." But I decided to give it a go anyway on a d&d miniature and it has become my new favorite technique. I honestly don't even know if I'm doing it right, but this figure has come out looking really good so far. So, thank you!
My results went way up thanks to this video. Faces, muscles and cloaks now all look more natural because of stippling. Very beginner friendly technique to learn about color mixtures as well. Thank you so much for all the content!
I'm so happy I found your channel, as I'm just starting out in the hobby. I really like that you have so many videos on brush techniques, as I don't use an airbrush, not yet anyway. I'm currently going through all your videos in the background as I'm painting. Luckily I don't have to worry about time, as I don't play the game. I paint for the sake of painting, so all my minis will be display pieces. Thank you for all your hard work.
I've only just found your stuff today, and I am hooked (watched about 10 videos already). These five minute videos are amazing, I subscribed and insta-followed. I love how precise and direct you are in the videos with explaining, and showing pallets and talking about hue's and what not. Also that effen gangstar line killed me haha
I feel so daft for not practising on bases. I had not even thought of it. Heck, I could be practicing on all these milk bottle caps that I've been collecting to stick my minis to when painting them!!! This is great because it eliminates the fear of failure I have when painting miniatures! It also gives me something to pass to the kids to paint too! Thank you.
RUclips gods were listening... it was in my recommendation. Cool stippling techniques. On my channel, I paint mainly in oils but fiddle with acrylics from time to time as well. My stippling is similar to yours but there were a few things you did I'd like to try out.
It's fun when you find that the way you mess around with paint is a real technique lol. I shall take your theory and techniques to make my craft something resembling good work. You have my gratitude :)
The Artis Opus XS drybrush is great for stippling, i use it ALL the time. if you combine it with the idea of mixing paints from one tone to another you get great smooth gradients. and if you use glazes or an Airbrush to smooth it out, it gets better.
I love your channel 😻 I haven't painted in years and you've helped me get right back into it! And bringing back all the memories of lessions I took in art 🎨

After 20 years I'm moving away from the traditional "gw" way of painting. I suuuuck as edge highlights (eyes and hands not what they were) so this approach and the nmm style really helps. Thank you.

Recently discovered this channel and you do a phenomenal job of breaking down these techniques. New to the painting hobby I have been a little confused about exactly how each of these truly work. You have cleared alot of that up for me. Thanks fornthe content!
Stippling looks interesting because it supports a rough structure of armor. Here you can change the blending technique for different surfaces maybe? Cloaks get another treatment like metal for example.
Dang…I literally just commented on another video about this very thing I was trying to figure out how to do. That’s awesome. I’m going to mix some white with the color I used for the inside of a cape now.
Truly, I have learned a lot from your vids. I have found that your vid’s help out for people who have painted a few minis and are looking to really up their game or be more efficient while getting good results. Thank you for this video.
Come to think of it, i realised many oil paintings have that same effect of stippling to create texture in paintings, so actually its a professional artist’s technique thats been around for a really long time!
Would you recommend starting with stippling before getting into glazing outside of competition ? Do washes get used pre stippling of does this stop the need for washing 🤔
Well done! Stippling is one of my favorite painting methods. I prefer it over smooth surfaces as it gives texture to the mini and makes it look more realistic and alive in my opinion. You can also overlap stippling with glazing to smoothen the stipples if required. I usually do this for smoother fabrics like cloaks. There are a lot of different ways to stipple and in some cases, you don’t even damage your brush if you use it’s side. Good job on mentioning so many methods in such a short and to the point video. I subscribed right away and I enjoyed watching this. Thanks for the content ! 👍🏼👍🏼
Very good tutorial as always :) Stippling is something I discovered by accident myself when I was still a noob and l still like to use it~ a very good technique for beginners that can upgrade a mini a lot!
How much water would you usually use to stipple a gradient? Is it a glaze like consistency and you remove most paint or do you takeout straight from the pot and remove most of the paint from the brush?
Great tutorial, much better than two hours movies where author introduces his dog, talks bullshit about his new painting desk, says how he enjoys his new vibrator and tries to get me bored to death. In your case I get nothing but useful information and I think I just found a way to shade my Epic tanks! Thanks!

amazing content! I love how you explain the "cheats" I keep thinking about and then get away with amazing quality mini paints ^^ well done and thanks ^^
Try using a "spotter" type brush this will give you delicate dots and you don't have to press down so hard on the brush. You can also do a compromise and "cross hatch" strokes of transparent paint. This is super for metal, leather, nurgle and wood.
Kudos! 20 K views in 3 days and I got this served out fo the blue (had never seen you before) - I guess your straightrforward 'just do it' approach works as well on mini painting as it does on promoting your YT videos
Hey buddy! Love this video and love your channel! Just wondered what your thoughts are on how to do a kind of airbrush stipple. I’m painting Mortarion and want to add some interest to the wings instead of flat colours. My plan was to splatter white paint on the wings and then glaze with inks crimson to a yellow brown at the tips, letting it dry and then repeating the process until I’m happy with the results. Do you think this would provide pleasing results? Thanks and keep up the great content!
Hey man, I mean it is probably possible, but usually when I am stippling, I am trying to make it smooth, it sounds like you want to add "inconsistencies" so you can do that with airbrush but taking make up brush and stippling with it could do the trick. It is hard to imagine what exactly you have in mind, but I think that you can do some reasearch on that and find what you are looking for
@@ZumikitoI basically want to make the winged flesh look like flesh, The wings don’t have that much detail in terms of little lumps so by putting random dots on and glazing over I’m hoping it will look more interesting. I’ll give it a try on a practice sheet first I think.
Question: What about a hybrid of glazing and stippling, where we start with the utility and efficiency of stippling, and after that is done, use one or two layers of glaze to achieve smoother blend on the colors. Would that not eliminate the apparent difficulty and time in glazing and questionable gradient issues in stippling?
I'm painting a Unicorn. He's ready to go with zenithal prime. I was going to do a thousand tiny elongated brush strokes to create texture (it's a smooth sculpt, except for mane, tail, and forelocks above hooves). Question: Do you think stippling would be as effective for creating a bit of "flat fur" texture? It would be much faster. If more controlled tiny, gentler brush strokes would look significantly better, I'll stick with that. Thanks!
Do a "rescue" project, i.e: taking a really poorly painted mini and then attempt to fix it and make it a show winner. Would be a great challenge for you and great for us to watch! 🎨
I hate edge highlighting and I've just started a Black Templars Space Marine Force.. i was wondering if you could possibly do a video or give me advice on using stippling to highlight the black armour, i would be using incubi darkness and thunderhawk blue as the highlight colours (blueish shades instead of grey) any advice or demonstration is highly appreciated I really enjoy your videos and so glad i subscribed

This was brilliant
Question:
What about a hybrid of glazing and stippling, where we start with the utility and efficiency of stippling, and after that is done, use one or two layers of glaze to achieve smoother blend on the colors. Would that not eliminate the apparent difficulty and time in glazing and questionable gradient issues in stippling?
Yes, 100% true and I regret not mentioning it since so many people are asking that in the comment section 😂
@@Zumikito Ah, in that case I thank you for your wisdom. Might need to put another pinned comment at the vid to ward off such questions.
never seen your channel before, I'm not into painting minis, but I have to say ... what a magnificent beard!
Thanks!
I think it can work just great! Both hard and soft stipples can be used
Do a "rescue" project, i.e: taking a really poorly painted mini and then attempt to fix it and make it a show winner. Would be a great challenge for you and great for us to watch! 🎨
Step 1: Simple Green soak
Isnt ebay rescues already doing that? :)
@@Zumikito thx I'll check that! :)
I hate edge highlighting and I've just started a Black Templars Space Marine Force.. i was wondering if you could possibly do a video or give me advice on using stippling to highlight the black armour, i would be using incubi darkness and thunderhawk blue as the highlight colours (blueish shades instead of grey) any advice or demonstration is highly appreciated
I really enjoy your videos and so glad i subscribed
