    Great tips! You can also use this set-up if you only have another 49 key controller and set the octaves independently to get a larger octave range.👍🏽

    This works perfectly fine and I just did it this way after spending the whole day trying in vain to setup the CS with a master keyboard in Studio One so that I can record the synth and the midi data. I'll try again tomorrow using this same setup hopefully there isn't any issues.

    Wow! Just Wow! I used to want a Rhodes, Clavi, Wurli and a Hammond
    But now alls I want is a Yamaha Reface. No need for all those old, heavy hard to maintain high dollar instruments.
    If offered a free Rhodes or a free Reface I'd choose the Rhodes tho lol

    It seems to me that there is something else to do to pair a Reface and keyboards. I just connect MIDI cables, make sure that connections are right (IN OUT) and nothing happens. both Yamaha and Kaiwa have settings for MIDI. In the case case of my Kaiwa, local control on/off, midi channels, and some more. It would be useful to explain how to set this out besides connections. Thanks!

    Great video. When I play it with my Yamaha clavinova, I have the problem that it doesn't respond and play like a real Rhodes. I can't change the sound by hitting harder or less harder on the keys. Seems like the velocity or responsive is not good,as I don't get the versatile sound.
    Do you know how to fix that?

    but i now have two questions:

    How you contact it via midi cable is not difficult to find out. I guess what would have been really helpful is to show how to assign a master keyboard to a reface PLUS how to give it permission to manipulate the other levels, like oscillator, enveloppe, effects, .. i use a reface CS and a novation impulse and face problems with it :D

    Not seeing an answer to a question I have, a simple one. I want to use my Yamaha MX88 for piano sounds and the Reface DP for Rhodes, etc. How can I easily go from one to the other in a performance. In other words, let's say I am playing a piano based song and want to hear just the MX88, then next I'm playing an electric piano song and only want to hear the Reface. How do I do that? Thanks.

    Panel B: Send it to Reface so I can have a lead sound on there?
    Love your vids!🎹

      I'm sure you've likely come to a conclusion on this already, but I had the same question and the following video is very useful: ruclips.net/video/neXswJJcatc/видео.html
      Hopefully it can be of use to others with the same question (or invite someone to correct me if any of this info is wrong)
      TL;DW: There are a few options, the main ones (IMO) below:
      - You can use a MIDI-USB host as the other commenter has said (which is quite expensive, around £100 in the UK)
      - You can use a Raspberry Pi to work as a MIDI-USB host (may require a bit of Linux know-how, and potentially a MIDI-USB cable, not sure if this method works with a standard USB Type-B to USB cable)
      - If you're on Mac OS/Linux there are included programs to route MIDI signals from one device to another (USB MIDI controller -> Computer -> Reface)
      - You may also be able to do the above via a DAW (the video creator in that link uses Ableton to do that, and the accepted answer here: www.midi.org/forum/3763-unusual-midi-routing says that the free Windows DAW Cakewalk by Bandlab works also)

    I would assume that the same set up would apple with all the Reface keyboards...such as the Reface DX. Since I'm primarily a piano player, I think a combination of a Cp nd DX Reface would be great. I wonder if two reface units - Cp and DX can both be connected midi so they both ar controlled by the master keyboard.

    • @kiskadar69
      @kiskadar69 Год назад +1

      Yes, it is possible. The MIDI receive channel (1..16) of reface CP and the MIDI receive channel (1..16) of reface DX must be set to different values.
      If the master keyboard has only one MIDI Out, a MIDI Thru Box "MIDI In".should be plugged into it, and the MIDI Thru Box "MIDI Thru" outputs should be plugged into the MIDI inputs of the reface CP and reface DX.

    I obviously don't understand the fundamentals of MIDI communication from one device to another; so I'm confused whether a keyboard controller (ie. no onboard sound built in) can function as the master keyboard for a Reface (assuming the controller has a MIDI dim)? Would it make any difference if there were a USB MIDI Host (such as the Hobbytronics MIDI Host or Kenton MIDI USB Host MkII) powered in between?

    • @mikeellisonhimself
      @mikeellisonhimself 3 года назад +1

      Yes a MIDI controller can do that. MIDI is just a set of commands telling the recipient to do stuff e.g."play C3" "stop playing C3". If the master is a USB host, it should work.

      You can connect two Reface units together via the 5 pin midi connectors (I did it with my CP & YC) but you’ve still only got mini keys, but it does double the amount of keys from 36 to 72, however I found the tones and sounds of say the CP didn’t quite match the tones & sounds of the YC and visa versa. It’s ok but I prefer to have the ability to connect each to either a 61 or 73 semi weighted keyboard with full size keys

    • @jeremymurray-wakefield8011
      @jeremymurray-wakefield8011 6 лет назад +4

      Not tricky, just set the YC and CP to receive on different MIDI channels (see V1.3 supplementary manual).
      During live performance, just switch the MIDI channel on the master keyboard to select which one you want to control. Many (most?) master keyboards will allow you to "split" the keyboard so you can play both at the same time using different areas of the master keyboard.

    • @jameswood3977

      DR Mix here in the video is connecting between 5 pin midi to 5 pin midi devices (both Yamaha too) I’ve done the same between two Reface units (CP & YC to obtain 72 keys of either CP or YC) but from what I can tell your M-Audio Keystation Mk3 is only USB midi and that is probably the problem unless you have some kind of converter between the two different technologies. I believe there are converters you can buy off the shelf as apparently someone connected a Roland Go to a Yamaha Reface and he mentioned a converter box by a U.K. company called Kent for around £80/100

    I hooked my Reface CP midi up to an old casio keyboard that has midi. I can't get the same kind of response as the Reface keys on the Casio. Like when you hit the keys hard on the Reface wurlitzer setting, I can get it to bark and distort. But when hitting the casio keys, that kind of thing doesn't happen.

    • @kiskadar69
      @kiskadar69 Год назад +1

      According to the documentation, the Yamaha reface YC only has an expression pedal input and the pedal can only be used to control the volume.
      Workaround: you can also control the rotary speed via MIDI. This requires a more seriously programmable MIDI controller, because you need to send (hexadecimal) "Bc 13 dd" messages, where
      c: the MIDI channel (0..F),
      dd: status of the rotary (00..20 = Off, 21..40 = Stop, 41..5F = Slow, 60..7F = Fast).

    How on earth do you connect the Reface CP in a chain of instruments via MID cables. Everytime i play sounds internal in Ableton, or other external synths i hear the Reface CP toghether with a selected instruments because its so stupid and receving ALL midi data even if i just want the Reface to be on one MIDI channel, number one as a example. Is there no simple way to just tell the machine "-keep your self to MIDI channel one and shut up if i go, say, MIDI channel 7?

      My thoughts exactly. Surprised that this wasn't mentioned at all in this 4 plus minute clip. Did you find a work around? I looked in the manual and saw that you can use CC#124 from a sequencer to disable OMNI receive mode, but I found no way to set the MIDI channel. I think it will default to channel 1.

    • @nakazul1
      @nakazul1 4 года назад

      @@StevenSclafani It requiers special software for Ableton wich i dont intend to pay for, and not every sequrencer software can even send the needed uniqe message, and you will need to do it everytime you turn the machine on. So did i find a solution? Yes, im selling it shortly and will never look at Yamaha again 🙄🙂

      @@nakazul1 Thanks for your reply. What were the Yamaha designers thinking when they programmed it to receive MIDI on all channels? As if it's 1984 and this is the only piece of MIDI gear in your setup. Luckily my sequencer (Squarp Pyramid) shouldn't have any issue sending the CC#124 to turn OMNI off and then I'll just use MIDI channel 1 which I suspect is the CP's default. You're correct though, whenever I turn the unit on I think I have to remember to send CC#124 otherwise it'll be a MIDI sequencing cacophony with all channels receiving note on messages. Perhaps there will be a simple software update and then you won't have to hate on Yamaha so much.

    Can you work with all 88 keys on your master keyboard at once, or do you only get the 37 keys and you must switch between octaves to work with all 88 keys

    Or you just use the built in sounds of the Yamaha MOXF, you get better value with less hassle. Lol. The whole reface series was a counter intuitive move by Yamaha, because those organs pianos and DXs need proper keyboard.

      Not at all - it's all about portability today - most music tech is incorporating batteries and mini-speakers now. All you need to do is have one nice master keyboard lying around the place and you're set. The nice thing about the reface line is being able to carry one around with you whilst on holiday or during casual travelling I also think the reface line is a good counter to the Roland Boutique series.

      With a MIDI Thru box you can. They'd both play at the same thing at the same time unless your keyboard lets you set a split and you set the Refaces to different channels.

      This is untested so probably 99,9% wrong, but in theory you COULD drive the sound Reface out the OUTPUT or PHONES port into the AUX IN / MIC port on your master keyboard? (as long as you use a patch set at 0 volume so it doesn't interfere?)
