In theory A flat wire spring will give you more space for the spring to move before bottoming out. Similar to what you did with the rifle length buffer. .
I consider myself lucky. I've heard all these problems for years so I was expecting issues when I got my first suppressor but other than them getting much dirtier, I haven't noticed much. One interesting thing I'd like to mention is that years ago I wanted a 16" bull barrel and I ended up getting one that has a rifle length gas system (yes, 16" barrel with rifle length gas system). That gas port at the end of the barrel eliminates the excessive dwell time.

Except for the comment at the end "the point of a suppressor is to look cool" it is a very good explanation of the pros/cons of shooting suppressed. For the average guy who is not a gunsmith, and wants a super reliable weapon(the most important thing after training), it is usually not the best option. Put your money into training and kit. Remember the SOF montra, "superior training and superior firepower beats superior numbers every time". I saw that play out every single time.
The only thing to add re first time suppressor use, expect to get a little dirty. Any oil, dirt, what have you that you've failed to remove will come loose by way of all the extra gas blow back. I do shoot a lot and own several pre 86 guns. I've tried every suppressor cover out there including the two layer super silicone covered by Nomex and have burned through all of them and I don't do mag dumps unless someone gives me ammo. About four 30 round mags shot fairly quickly in semi at multiple steel targets out there a ways is usually enough to cause serious damage to the wraps. If I'm past 200 yards with the 7.62 or my new fav .338 Lapua Mag. I don't use a wrap at the range. If I'm out in the field I'll use a wrap because I don't always know how many rounds I'll need to shoot.... but eventually even the wraps start showing heat mirage even with slow but regular fire. I can live with it either way.
Atomic Ammo 5.56x45mm Tactical Cycling Subsonic - cycles just fine when using a suppressor - subsonic eliminates the supersonic crack - lower muzzle energy but works fine for quiet CQB
Hey Garand thumb. have you ever used a vented charging handle? i work at a small gun manufacture in Oregon, and we have a patented vented charging handle. they say it helps with suppressed rifles. but i got no first hand experience. just wanted to see if you heard about such things and if they actually work or help?
I had one rifle that was SO overgassed with a suppressor, I needed a Gemtech carrier, a gas vent replacing the forward assist, AND the charging handle silicon seal trick before the gasses were reduced enough for me to see after a couple shots. Dang that rifle was gaseous.
That cracks me up, some people are worried about adding a few more ounces to their gun by using a gas piston system and then add 2 1/2 to 3 pounds of flashlights, IR Lasers and suppressors ROFLMAO
"let's talk about the sounds the ar15 makes" I'm gonna bring this up any chance I get. My dads friend was ranting to us about how he hates the direct impingement system because of the buffer tube. When prompted, he explained he could hear the recoil spring through his ear pro. Lo and fucking behold I start hearing it after he says something. Doesn't bother me but I was shooting with my dad, after one round I looked back at him and he just started laughing.
Superlative Arms has an ultra light weight gas block with patented off gassing that actually is QUIETER with a suppressor than other systems. See Michael Bell's channel and tests. I LOVE SA piston kits and use them almost exclusively now. I think their gas block is only .5 ounces heavier. I cant tell. It is VERY light!!!
Wait for it... wait for it... @11:45. Kidding aside, thanks for another direct, informative video. I’ve re-watched twice to catch everything. Pros, cons, Fonzie, etc.
Just broke my Dead Air Sierra 5 out of ATF jail last week, alongside my Q Erector 22 and Rugged Obsidian 45. The Dead Air on my Daniel Defense DD MK12. It drops the noise to 120 DB. However, remember the MK12 has an 18” barrel. It’s slightly louder with my DDM4V9 since it has a 16 inch barrel but both are now safe outdoors. Indoors though, you’ll still want ear plugs. The price you pay is you get more gas in the face. The Surefire can Dr. Garand uses has less gas, but you’ll get 10-20 more DB noise depend on your rifle (barrel length, charging handle, set up etc) so there is no such thing as a free lunch, it’s give and take. I think when the Alphabet Acronhole boyz’s brace rule fails in the Supreme Court, and I finally take my DD MK 18 home, I’ll take the Surefire can instead since you don’t want THAT much gas in your face. For anything 16 inch barrel or above, I’ll take Dead Air.
Great vid. Very informative. The best way to minimize gas blow back though is to spend a little extra $ and purchase an OSS can that expels the gas out the front of the can

Anywho, noveske already has all the tuning engineered into it so we can just turn a dial with a detent for an obvious lock in position.
Anyone interested in pinning a clamp on message me. I looked for months in the dark corners of the net and no dice. A few ideas and guesses but no actual been there done it. I’d be happy to share. ~35 K through each switch block with 0 issues. A good product John engineers before his death... RIP John noveske. Just 1 point cooler than flannel pimp. -End of book-
You got the Trump sniffles bro. I F@in love your channel.
He reminds me of Christian Bale in American psycho
Atomic Ammo 5.56x45mm Tactical Cycling Subsonic - cycles just fine when using a suppressor - subsonic eliminates the supersonic crack - lower muzzle energy but works fine for quiet CQB
Hey Garand thumb. have you ever used a vented charging handle? i work at a small gun manufacture in Oregon, and we have a patented vented charging handle. they say it helps with suppressed rifles. but i got no first hand experience. just wanted to see if you heard about such things and if they actually work or help?
WhiteRussianAK477 it helps divert gasses away from your face. That’s about it. Not really needed
that worn look on the paint is beautiful
I had one rifle that was SO overgassed with a suppressor, I needed a Gemtech carrier, a gas vent replacing the forward assist, AND the charging handle silicon seal trick before the gasses were reduced enough for me to see after a couple shots.
Dang that rifle was gaseous.
His older videos are far superior. Thats so much more palatable and less cringy
You almost sound like Mike Rowe....
Hearing “boss” and “Real G” from daddy garand was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
GT has definitely been mewing over the past 7 years
“It’s getting easier and easier to get a suppressor” well this didn’t age well...
Wait for it... wait for it... @11:45.
Kidding aside, thanks for another direct, informative video. I’ve re-watched twice to catch everything. Pros, cons, Fonzie, etc.
By any chance are you a Eagle Scout?
Life for Life
Garand Thumb Lol Atleast you got the skills from it all still.
All my skills came from the Military primarily.
Ah ok, thanks for posting these videos though. I definitely learn.
Appreciate it brother, I'm always learning as well - glad I can help out.
Wrap the can with header wrap. Works really well.
adjustable BCG now they make those fixes your blow back and cycling in 1 go combined with that suppressor...good package.
The best way to minimize gas blow back though is to spend a little extra $ and purchase an OSS can that expels the gas out the front of the can
“Or if you have shorts on ,a boss,a real G “ said that with clear validation
😂 priceless
