    It's really kind of a shame that this scene has become more famous as a meme of Dawson's crying face, than it has gotten recognition for actually being a really beautiful and heartfelt scene. The scene itself is perhaps one of the most crucial scenes in the entire history of the show, not least when it comes to the character-arcs of Dawson and Joey, but also the overarching story of Dawson's Creek. The acting is, meme-face excluded, phenomenal, and the the pay-off feels logical, earned and satisfying after 3 seasons of coherent build-up. Personally, I will remember this scene for more than the meme it created. This is Dawson's Creek at its peak 👏🙂

  • @siriusv7
    @siriusv7 3 года назад +721

    This is probably the breaking point in Dawson's character arc and the moment when he gains my utter respect. In a series which is all about growing up and coming of age, this is the moment when Dawson faces and accepts reality. He had been a dreamer and an eternal optimist, and always believed that you could be, get, or have whatever you wanted if you fought hard enough. But this is when he realizes that sometimes you just can't change reality. Joey doesn't love him, she loves Pacey, and it doesn't matter how much he tries to change it, that's not going to change, it's the excruciating truth that he has to accept. And he does. And at this moment, he is not just letting Joey go, he's letting go of all his naive, childish and many times self-centered view of life and the world. It's the key moment, and after this he's finally ready to move on and grow up.
    From season 4 onwards he's a very different character, much more calm and thoughtful, but not in the emotional, neurotic overanalytical way he had been up to that point, but in a more sensible and rational manner. In season 4 he leads a more stable relationship with Gretchen and in season 5 with Jen as well. If you compare season 1 Dawson to season 6 Dawson, he's almost unrecognizable.

      I wouldn' say that. At this point, Joey still loves Dawson. But she needs to live something with Pacey. The crucial point is speech of Dawson at the wedding. When she hears it, Joey understands that Dawson will always love her. That something will be possible between them after that. And it frees her. She chooses Pacey because she knows Dawson, somehow, will be there for her. On the contrary, if she chooses Dawson, she knows that she will lost Pacey.

      I love this analyzes! I wish they would have let the love triangle die after season 3 it would have made for such a richer story arc for Dawson. I think the audience had moved past the will they won’t they of Dawson and Joey. There would have been more of an emotional investment if was solely focused on his personal growth. No more underlying triangle stuff. I agree that he did evolve into more of a mature person after this but I do think he ended up with the short end of the stick when it came to stories after this season.

Crying isn’t meant to be a beautiful pretty thing. It’s suppose to be a brutal and ugly mess. Plus not to mention it’s a teenage romantic drama. What Dawson does at the end of the clip is perfectly well acted. I’m only on Season 4 right now and the acting on this show is great. Although I definitely understand Dawson feeling betrayed, the way he treated Pacey everytime he tried to grow always made me mad. He always wanted to keep Pacey in his shadow and the thing is that he couldn't especially when Joey fell for him. Joey saw what Dawson had always saw in Pacey, a true friend, a person with the potential to be great. God this show was great. I know that Dawson wasn't perfect, but it annoys me how most people are hating on Dawson as if he's the only one with flaws in the show. No one can tell me Joey is perfect, why is everyone mostly hating on Dawson? Let's not forget Joey cheated on Dawson when they were together with Jack and she was always mean to Jen for absolutely no valid reason. Why is no one talking about that? This is just an example of other things she did wrong. Pacey dated his "Bestfriends" ex/ best friend for weeks behind his back. Jack kissed Joey even though he knew she was dating Dawson. Andie cheated on Pacey. Jen tried to break Dawson and Joey up by seducing Dawson because she wanted him back and Abby Morgan suggested it to her. My point is all the characters have their flaws, stop being a hypocrite by coming for only Dawson. Most comments I see about Dawson's creek are one sided. Tbh, Dawson would have been better off if Joey never confessed her feelings to him. When she confessed her feelings for him, it ruined everything (friendships, etc.). Also, most people in the comment section are like "Dawson is selfish and held Joey back", but they forget that whenever Joey broke up with Dawson and he tried to move on, she always held him back. I do agree that Joey grew when she was with Pacey. On the other hand, she was always complaining about finding herself when she was with Dawson. Everyone is like "Dawson needs to stop whining about Pacey and Joey's Relationship, bla, bla, bla...". People also say that Dawson only sees things in black and white. While that might be true sometimes, everyone saying Dawson should not have reacted the way he did when he found out Pacey and Joey were seeing each other without telling him should put themselves in his shoes. How would you feel if your best friend started seeing your ex/ other best friend behind your back? Would you react in such a nice, calm way? I don't think so because most people wouldn't. Let's be honest, no one knows how they would react in that situation until they have experienced it. Therefore, save your comments and think about what you guys are saying. Everything is not so black and white in this show like some people make it out to be. To most people, Dawson is the villain. Why is that? He's not the only flawed character.
    DISCLAIMER: DO NOT COMMENT AND TELL ME I'M SAYING THIS BECAUSE I'M A DAWSON FAN OR I SHIP HIM AND JOEY. I'm simply tired of everyone coming for Dawson and blaming him for everything, it's so repetitive and annoying. Joey and Dawson's dating ruined how I feel about Joey AND Pacey's relationship. I would have preferred they never dated because now the whole show is ruined for me and I feel weird about J and P's relationship even though I was in support of them confessing their love for each other.

      Just rewatching and I agree with you. As much as Dawson has his flaws. Joey isn’t without hers. Being constantly bitchy to Jen, loving Dawson, needing to find herself apart from Dawson on her own. She should have just left Dawson well alone with Jen. As neurotic, annoying and self-absorbed Dawson is, I feel bad for him too and he doesn’t deserve all the hate. None of them are perfect.

Joey was always at fault for the breakdown of their romance and her bitchy attitude towards Jen because of her traditional feminine nature(which attracted Dawson) is an aspect I'm mad the show never addressed properly. I do think it's because Dawson was perceived as the hero at the time of airing that people are retroactively blowing his flaws out of proportion and almost erasing everyone else's

      @@favour3734 yeah I keep thinking God, he’s like one of the most annoying protagonists ever. I like all the characters but I also recognise where they fall short. Dawson is a nice guy most times except when he is angry at you or feels slighted by you then wow watch out for his mean streak cos his words wound. The way he would always put down Pacey was the worst. I still stand by the fact that Joey’s behaviour towards Jen was so inappropriate and bitchy however she was redeemed later on when she fell out of love with Dawson I think. Pacey always annoyed me with his insecurities whether it be about Dawson and Joey or about his future and placing all that blame on Joey when they broke up. However in the end I think they just tried to show the characters are all human beings with flaws, none are perfect. Dawson is this perfect son but mostly selfish, Pacey is the perfect friend and boyfriend but so riddled with insecurities that makes him self-sabotage. Then Joey the perfect student and sometimes perfect friend when she doesn’t feel intimidated by you. Unfortunately her character is the one I didn’t really like at first. But now into season 5 and I can see she’s grown up so that’s okay. I really felt for Jen all the time she was sad, she just kept getting forgotten by her so called friends until Jack I think (save for that period in college). Anyway it’s interesting rewatching something, you just pick up on so many stuff you might have missed out before. Btw, I loved Joey and Pacey together. I like them together.

      The Joey and Pacey relationship would always be the hardest thing to reveal to Dawson. I mean how do you do that knowing the kind of person Dawson was and therefore his reaction. How do you hurt your friend? It’s a hard one especially as they both didn’t plan the relationship, it just happened. It was hard.
      Gretchen and Dawson, not so hard. Plus we all saw that coming even Pacey which is why he was trying to get Gretchen back with her ex on that trip they took together.

    On the one hand, I regret writers had never given a chance to Dawson and Joey to live a love relationship from a beginning season to a finale season (just like Joey and Pacey or Dawson and Gretchen). On the other hand, I like this out of time waltz between them. This constantly lag. When Joey wants Dawson, he dates Jen. When Dawson is ready for her, she's not ready anymore. When they fall in love again, a tragedy separates them. When Joey overcomes her suffering, Dawson didn't believe in their reunion. And when Dawson thinks time is came, she falls in love with Pacey. When the two are free again, Dawson thinks they must walk on their own way. And when they're ok to walk on the same way, Mitch's death destroys everything, and Dawson and Jen fall in love again. The right time was when they had their first night together, but no, it wasn't lol. There is something beautiful in this eternal shift. But I profondly regret one thing : the writers have never worked again on the funny complicity there was between them in season 1. In this season, they laugh, they disput like children, they are very tactile, they debate all the time with smile. After they date together, this airiness has disappead. The only moments where they find this airiness again, it's in season 4, after Brooks death, when they walk around in Capeside, and some too rare moments in college.

      Thank God someone mentions this. The writers never gave them a chance, all their breakups and not getting back together felt forced. They had to force conflicts and it never came naturally
      The Pacey and Joey breakup felt organic, I could see it coming from a mile away. The characters were heading in that direction without the interference of the writers.
      People say Dawson and Joey were toxic and they didn’t work, but that’s only because the writers never wanted them to be together. When you actually analyze their characters, there is *nothing* that makes them incompatible. Whereas with Pacey and Joey I could make a detailed essay on why both of their flaws doomed their relationship from the beginning, I think it’s them who were incompatible

      @@tianam.964 that's what it seems like. I was 11 - 16 while the show aired and I remember reaaaally disliking Dawson. Towards the end i think I didn't watch as religiously. But anyway, this scene rubs me the wrong way. Like you're not my man and you're giving me permission to be with who I want, and I gotta hurry up and leave before you change your mind? Oh okay.

I get that he was her best friend for a long time but he was constantly using that to manipulate her. I'm so glad she didn't end up with him, it would have been such a bad message.

      Oh it it is, especially in season 1, him and Joey both were super annoying and immature, not to mention sanctimonious. I don't understand how either of them dealt with each another long enough to even be friends much less in a relationship!

    Dawson’s Creek has got to be the most cringe worthy show I’ve ever seen. But I love it in every way. This show would not do well in today’s culture but my god does this show bring back memories

      @Travis Werner someone’s not a happy camper clearly you can’t read. I love it , but this generation will simply say its cringe worthy. Cmon , you mean to tell me your best friend on the first episode who sleeps In your bed for 10 yrs who’s a girl isn’t out of touch with today’s time . Or the fact the script of the show is so complex yet they’re only supposed to be 15 starting off ? It’s unrealistic but it’s great 😊

      Thanks for this comment. It’s now on Netflix and I was contemplating watching it, given that I missed it when it first came out. But most teen dramas from the 2000s haven’t aged well, and going by your comment, it seems to be the case here too. I used to love The OC when it came out. I tried watching it now, and barring Adam Brody’s histrionics, it bored me to death.

    There's a theory that we have more then one type of soulmate. The theory is we have a significant other soulmate and a best friend soulmate. I believe that Joey and dawson are best friends soul mates, always were, but I havnt finish the show yet.

    • @skyejacques
      @skyejacques 2 года назад +2

      True. There are also karmic soulmates. So you think they're your real soulmate. They destroy you. And ten years later, you feel nothing for them, with God's grace.
      And people have a theory that we've reincarnated so many times that most people are our soulmates anyway

    This show was the most unrealistic show ever, over dramatic, teens don’t talk like that, teens don’t even look like that, but it was my childhood show and it holds so many good memories of the 90s for me.
