The end of S04 the best scene of a wonderful show. All ingredients that made DC great are in these 5 minutes. It's emotional (aw..., Joey crying on the side of the bed), it's well filmed & acted, nice dialogue, it has a beautiful soundtrack (I just love the cover of 'Daydream Believer' playing in the original background), and most of all it's... Joey and Dawson together sorting their relationship. Frankly, this should have been the series finale, and I wonder if secretly it hasn't been written as one. Think of it... the mirroring of the finale of the 1st season (Joey & Dawson kissing behind the curtains), the stories that were all wrapped up correctly, the end of high school, the end of the group of friends living together in Capeside, Joey's emotioanlly challenging youth summarized, etc., it all would have made sense to actually end the show with this particular scene! Much more so than with the finale we all got to watch 2 years later. As much as I like DC, I feel the last two seasons were simply 'added' to the story. IMO Season 5 was not too bad, but a completely different story with only the same cast. S06 is forgettable at best (Pacey the stockbroker, Eddie Dolan, Audrey (aarchhh!) going to rehab etc) until the friends return to Capeside.
Agree with you that this absolutely would've made an all-time great series finale, last two seasons had their moments but are largely forgettable

I can't believe how emotional this scene was, It literally made me want to cry
I'm never gonna understand why they did what they did with the end, it's just so inconsistent, after all these emotional scenes where you can clearly see that they are never going to love anyone the same way that they love each other (they said it themselves, in the prom, when Pacey breaks up with her).
The show it's really good, I just ignore the fact that the ending doesn't have any sense to me.
You don't understand why it has never happened to you, your soul mate is not always the love of your life, I understand very well why it happened to me, and the fact that she ultimately chose peicy makes perfect sense to me, you don't always choose to the person with whom you are supposed to be, but with whom you have so many problems, sometimes you can choose the one that makes your life simpler and that although it is not your soul mate, it gives you peace and you know that at some point it will be the great love of your life.
It was pacey , it was always pacey .... The one that truly challenged her, made her laugh , made her feel whole. It was always pacey.
I kind of understand what you are saying regarding Dawson and Joey. Alias the popular couple won out in the end.
Even if Dawson didn't end up with her which I can accept, the way the writing was for the last two series (5&6) didn't make any sense for the ending that happen because there was no lingering feelings between them unlike Dawson and Joey who still continue to get jealous of anyone Dawson was with.
I think it was too neat and tidy in that they had to make her end up with one of them when it would have made more sense in my option if she ended up with neither because for me it wasn't always going to be either one of them although there may have been that impression for certain fans of either couple.
After all the emotional scenes where we saw Joey completely in love with Pacey, it couldn’t have ended differently

The crazy thing is Pacey is more flawed than most of the characters but people tend to overlook his fault and bash the hell out of Dawson .
Dawson is right infact all three needs to grow apart right now. They spent entire life together now its time to find themselves, what they really want in life. For that they have go in different directions.

The best part got left out - their kiss at the window in the end. Pure magic. So powerful. Soulmates, friends, lovers, everything. Dawson and Joey first and second theme also played in the background. And this is why the ending of the show makes no sense.

Just like Joey to string Dawson along and never know what she wants when it comes to him. Dude should've just completely moved on to USC and never look back.
Notice that Joey lost her virginity to Pacey, yet her "all-time most life-altering moment" was her first kiss with Dawson, not the first time she slept with Pacey. Doesn't that say something right there?
well when she had a crush on Dawson for a very long time but she was too scared, and confused to tell him while she saw him everyday and her feelings were building and building every time she saw him, that kiss would fit the category. While I understand what you’re saying, that dosent mean she didn’t love or like Dawson more. They were bestfriends and Joey will always love Dawson but her love for Pacey was greater, they had more chemistry.
She said there are a lot of "winners", so there were a lot of those moments, but would she really tell Dawson about the first time she had with Pacey? Both were life altering moments, Joey just has the common sense to tell Dawson about the one involving him.
She only says that to make him feel better

You can tell there so much there between them i know Joey cares for Dawson even though there not together together there still apart of one another they do have that pact that bond they shared another kiss for a reason a kiss that they never forgotten they spent so much time together they needed to live Apart and be without each but never forgotten about each other there bond can’t be broken.
The writers never wanted them to be together but I always did no matter how good pacey was I always wanted Dawson and joey sue me
This scene has more emotion from Katie/joey than anything with pacey. Even the crying/tears is so real

Whyyyyyyy did they insist on a love triangle being the most interesting thing of this series?! It was seriously so boring. I didn't care *who* Joey ended up with. Jen and Jack had the most interesting storylines. Like, Jen's *dying* in this episode and Kevin Williamson still insisted on making Jen's main concern be about her friends' love triangle. Just unbelievably boring.

Dawson's answer at the question of Joey to stay was, if he doubted for one moment it was the right thing to do, he would stay. We see him in the first acte doubting three times.
One: if going to the summer course was such a great idea
Two: when he is in the kind of denial he was, you wouldn't have time for packing
Three: At the and of the acte he sighs something that he wishes this summer didn't have to end
Then, while walking with Jack to the cinema Jack asks him straight forward if he didn't want to leave and he ends his answer with "why he couldn't stop thinking about spending the summer with Joey.
I claim the writers did a pretty bad job here by letting him lie to Joey and she's taking that for granted. The consequences of letting him stay, because het doubted at least 4 times, would be unoverseeable.
They wanted us to hate Dawson

This episode should have been the end of the whole series. Season 3 and 4 already lost some of the first 2 seasons magic, season 5 and 6 lost almost everything. This would have been a great finale.
