I feel like the second dress that you’re not too keen on could actually be a cute jumpsuit if you split the skirt portion and sew it into wide pant legs. I feel like that might disguise the line in the front where the two fabric pieces meet.
I thought the same thing too!!! I would also love to see a video where you take something that wasn't a hit and make it into something better suited for you.
I actually love the second dress, but if its knee length and the sleeves are longer and thinner take the pockets out , it would look beautiful with brown belt and a knee length boots. The picnic dress is lovely
They’re all beautiful. For #2, I feel like it would look super cute as a jumpsuit reaching ankle length or just above. Another thought I had would be to make the bodice into a top instead and take the skirt to transform into a pair of high waisted vintage style shorts. Then you’d have a fab gingham two-piece that you can wear together or separate. 😊
The red picnic dress is absolutely gorgeous it looks so darn cute on you!! I’m also in love with a black and white gingham dress!! As for the middle dress you were right the seam down the front doesn’t look quite right … i’m wondering if you could turn it into a cropped top and shorts that might look very cute for the summertime
I love the red dress!!🥰 And the black and white one is so cute aswell! Definitely the perfect every day dress!!😍 With the seam of the second dress I always thought it was a jumpsuit and then got confused that it was actually a dress. But I think it would look so lovely as a jumpsuit because the bodice is so lovely. Maybe that would be a way to "fix" it 🤗
Loved this video! I love the first dress; i think i need my hands on this pattern. Ok hear me out! Turn dress #2 into a jumpsuit or playsuit!! I think the centre seam on the dress looks weird because of the gingham but if it were pants you wound be able to tell. And it would probably fix the appearance of the pockets. Just an idea. Hope you have a lovely xmas

Turn the vintage pattern dress into a blouse by cutting off the skirt and hemming it; then take apart the skirt portion to make a different bottom; either a skirt (with the print lining up differently) or shorts? Then you wear them as a set or with other pieces and you could then get more wear out of it and the blouse could probably layer well under winter pinafore dresses.
I really love the first dress. Hope you can share an in depth tutorial on that one. I think it will be suited for smart casual office environment as well, using a solid and neutral coloured fabric. You are sooo talented!
The brown dress I would take off the skirt, chop it to the shorter length and gather it to fit across the bodice. With the uneven edge you could fit it like you had to do for the “princess waist” dress you made. Or if gathering it would not sit right with the uneven edge of the bodice I would still take off and crop the skirt, take out the pockets, and re cut the shorter skirt version out of the pattern pieces adjusting the grain of the fabric to sit parallel at the centre seam.
I love the mccalls pattern, I’ve made it in so many different colours. But I find the bust pieces always need to be altered to fit. I’ve got a bigger chest, but a small frame. So I have to shorten the top to get it to look right. Just love the sleeve too!
Suggestion for second dress if you still have enough fabric left of course but you can cut a panel about 10cm wide to fit into centre, this will mean adding a few gathers into the 2 current front panels. It will give a bit more fabric so pockets less obvious and the pattern will be broken up as no front seam. . Thanks for all your content and inspiration this year. I also love to find fabric in charity shops too.
Love love love #1 would be such a lovely dress to wear on Christmas day. Thanks for the tip on the material for #3 as I have bought similar material, looks great too. Number #2 :( I feel it would look good as a jumpsuit as suggested by someone else, the drape of the dress gives that illusion anyway. While it wasn't a cleansweep win across all three wow what an achievement. Have a lovely Christmas break Janelle. Thanks for always inspiring ❤
Aw thanks lovely! I’m sure with a bit of fixing up I’ll be able to make something I love out of the second dress 😊 And I agree, the first dress will be perfect for Christmas Day! Merry Christmas x
The second one is really up to you how you feel. If I had made it, I would remake it without a middle seam, and patch pockets in the front, but I love it from the waist up.
I appreciate the commentary about how the fabric disappointed you in the second dress - and the next vid about how you fixed it. I will remember for my own dresses in the future. Thank you - all your work is an inspiration! And now you have a lovely outfit to wear on laundry day. Well done.
I think you’re right about the second dress. I’d likely cut it off and turn it into a blouse. Then you might be able to turn the bottom into a skirt that you’d like better - something with some gathers.
I love the first one, very flattering. I actually quite like the second one too - it's a slimming shape, but I agree with you about the pockets. The third one is my least favourite, it makes you look bulky, when you're actually slim.
I think the brown dress is so lovely! I agree that the pockets need to go but other than that I love it. You could always try shortening it if it still feels too overwhelming for you.
Wow. Great challenge. I think you are correct on the second dress. That fabric is closer to a plaid than a gingham. I think it needed simpler and straighter lines in a pattern. I really love the black and white. So cute. The picnic dress was darling too.
All three dresses rock! If you want it play with dress 2, I agree with other comments: remove the pockets to smooth your silhouette. And a belt would also look cool. Or, if embracing the retro vibe, add a cream or brown scarf, long narrow type. It will break up the pattern a bit, which is what you seemed worried about. But, me? I like it a lot. Best wishes.
The first and third are fabulous, the second I agree with you it looks off. Top part is great make it into a blouse maybe. Just like with artists not all paintings turn out great. Just keep going, don't stop! You're amazing.
Maybe for the middle dress, add some gores so the pockets have the space to not gape and the center front seam will have another reason to be there? Maybe even a matching spice orange in a flat colour.Might be cool. I personally love it as is, I'd just personally want a little less of a fitted a-line cuz I think that's what is making the pockets pop. Overall it's my favourite with the picnic one being a close second.
Impressive work! Ideas for the second dress: remove the pockets and add a long strip of wide crochet lace along the front seam: 70s style all the way. :)
Turn the second dress into a jumpsuit! The seam down the middle makes it kind of look like a jumpsuit, and then taking out the pockets or adding patch pockets would make it super cute!
My fave is the picnic dress. The black one is cute but the middle one does look slightly awkward,as in the lines seem wrong. Enjoy your time off and Merry Christmas.
I love dress number 1 and I am planning my own make of this dress. I agree that dress number 2 should have the pockets removed as it appears too tight across the hip or mid section and the pocket material does not lay flat. I am wondering if you shorten the dress to the knee length or above that the middle seam would be less noticeable as the eye would not be drawn down the seam. Just a thought.❤️🇨🇦
I think you could fix that one dress by adding a panel in the front to get rid of the line. Then, just lightly gathering the excess fabric to ease them all into the waistline - I don't think that would look bad at all! It might also just have to be a mini. But give it some time, and I'm sure you can save it one way or another (even putting a contrast skirt onto that bodice instead, like in a solid?). Great work, the other two are so cute, and that one is SO CLOSE to being adorable!!!
Thanks for the video. I made the Butterick pattern 48 years ago for my High school senior prom (formal dance). I made it out of a satin backed crepe so the fabric had good drape. I like your version although maybe your fabric choice was a bit too structured. I think this style suits you. I really like the first one you made. I would suggest taking the pockets off this version as I agree that it is too bulky in the hip area with the pockets. Shortening the hem might improve the drape also. Also, might I suggest you try to match your pattern at the from seam if you can, I think it will make the center front less noticeable since that is distracting you. All in all, wonderful makes and cute on you. Thx.
The beautiful chevron at the centre seam of the brown dress is wonderful. That said, I suggest you remove the pockets and raise the skirt at the bustline by about 10 cms, gentle gathering or pleating in any excess width. However, think they are all excellent and suit you well. I didn't known such a variety of gingham/checks were available at Spotlight! So I've just ordered some in my own colours!
The red dress really does look like the perfect picnic dress! If you don't love the brown dress, I would love to see a video where you take it apart and make something else. Something you will love and wear.
Maybe you could make the second dress into a jumpsuit or romper if there is enough fabric in there! The way the fabric joins in the middle gives it an illusion of being a pantsuit to me. Or you could turn the bodice into a top, maybe with a ruffle bottom, and salvage the skirt for a different project. One more thought would be to use a different fabric for the skirt that coordinates well. That might be the easiest and turn out super unique!
The plaid along center seam is the thing that ruins it imho and makes it look like a weird pantsuit. So 2 propositions from me:either turn it into a real pantsuit with long pants or remove pockets, rip center seam and make it match along it by making a pencil skirt with a slit, about knee lenght. Also thank you for posting it, my projects rarely come out as I want and I get discouraged so it's really helpful to see someone powering through that stage.
What a day! I love dresses #1 and #3. I see what you mean about #2 - perhaps the color of the gingham is a little too pastel for you? I wonder if you'd like it better a good bit shorter. It seems to be a little long. Maybe it would be better without pockets and with no front seam, as you suggested. It's not bad at all, just not my favorite. My fave is #1! Merry Christmas!
I would keep the bodice of the second remove the skirt and add a cream gathered mini skirt similar to the Rosa dress. Then see if you have enough of the skirt to make shorts or a cropped pant. I love the red gingham I’m going to look for that patter!
I think the second dress would look nice if you added a yoke cut on the fold that goes up to the under bust and ending at your natural waist (similar to dress 1) The center seam also would look nicer with a little more careful pattern matching. I think it looks off because the gingham isn't aligned as well as it could be. I do like the idea others have suggested of making it a romper/jumpsuit. Adding the yoke and doing that, going for a midi length perhaps instead of the maxi, would look really cute.
The 2nd dress is crying out to be turned into a jumpsuit and yes, I think you are right, it would look better without pockets. I love the 1st dress, so pretty.
I think for the brown dress I would perhaps cut it in half and make a seperates kind of situation? and change the shape of the skirt a bit? love the other two! but the brown top section is so great!
I have a perspective on the Butterick pattern. I made and wore three versions of this dress during high school and college. The pattern has little ease. It needed a spread in the skirt pattern so I could wear it. I agree you will probably have to take off the pockets.
The second one I think could make a lovely jumpsuit, I was getting jumpsuit vibes from how it was sitting, but I can see why you are not as happy with it as you were with the other ones! But all of them look lovely 😊
For the second dress what about adding a chunky brown belt? It just feels like it needs something to break it up. And maybe switch out the pockets for say a quilting cotton or broadcloth, something smoother. And I love the first dress! So pretty!
ALL 3 dresses have great potential! I think number 1 is the most perfect 😍. I think removing the pockets might be all you need to do to improve the second dress? A video where you make alterations to projects you’re not completely happy with would be a very interesting watch!
I feel like the second one is more of a muted brown than you usually use, so that combined with the length feels a bit older than you usually dress perhaps hem it again into a mini I can see it looking gorgeous as a mini dress with sheer tights in the autumn
Hi Janelle. Thanks for all the wonderful inspiration this year. If we could go back in time, or if you can get hold of some more of the fabric, I think the second fabric(which is one of my favs you’ve bought) would look great made up in the first dress. Rather than alterations I would personally unpick and remake into something else, maybe a blouse as you’d have less fabric to work with. I do think you need to do something with it as I can’t see you reaching for it when you have so many other fabulous choices, but that fabric needs to be seen! Thanks for including it in the video as it’s good for people to see that’s it’s ok for not everything turning out, especially if they’re just starting out on their sewing journey. I look forward to your videos next year. Hope you and your family have a restful break. And have a lovely rest of your Sunday. 🌸
The Picnic dress is my favorite, also. I do think the brown gingham skirt would be more appealing cut on the fold and, unfortunately, without pockets. The pattern picture could have been at fault leading you to believe you material choice would work. But, you did such a great job sewing all of them.
Agree, take out the pockets & cut skirt on the fold. But I think it would look even better with a gathered skirt... slash and spread the centre front skirt style line. Not too much gather, just enough to make it sweet. Can you pick up the same fabric? Or just cut it shorter to minimise the "drabness"?
Wow, what a challenge! They turned out great! For the second one, maybe wear a belt with it to distract from the centre seam and you can still keep the pockets in. Give that a try before redesigning it .
I think the second dress would make a really cute jumper, the center seam might look WAY better as a wide pantleg instead of a skirt! maybe with outer patch pockets instead to take away the bulk at the hips but not totally lose pockets
You have such beautiful skin which makes me envious everytime I watch your videos ! (Growing up in Sydney my skin shows the damage of getting sunburn every year before I knew better !). I really enjoy your videos xx
I agree with you on the second dress, the center seam is throwing me off. Ido like the bodice though, and how the seaming looks very interesting there. If I were you, i would make it shorter (a mini)- but instead of just cutting the bottom, i would separate the bodice and the skirt, cut the extra off the top of the skirt and resew it with a gather. It won't be super gathered, but i think it would be super cute, a bit Cecilie Bahnsen meets cottagecore. And the gather would take away from the graphics of the middle seam.
I think what you don't like about it is the angle of the fabric where it meets in the center front. Could you open up that seam and finagle a buttonhole and a button placket or (even better) a fake button placket. I think that would make the dress look less awkward. I absolutely love the red gingham dress.
I was thinking for the 2nd dress, what if you separate the skirt, cut off like 6” off the top of the skirt portion (or to where the gingham starts creating a point), + reattach so it becomes a fuller, shorter dress. Then you could move the pockets down or just remove depending on your motivation!
Hi jannelle, I think the second dress front line does not look weird it's actually interesting but understand it is not your style. I think you could fix it by contrasting with another fabric the same colour as the lines. This could actually be a new trend by keeping the bodice and replacing the skirt with a contrasting fabric colour and the front piece of the skirt cut on the fold so no front line. This is in case you don't have enough of the original fabric to redo the skirt. But don't give up because this pattern suits your shapes perfectly. For the third dress what matters is that you like it. I personally don't think it suits you as well as the other 2 and the gingnam fabric is not helping on this pattern either. But it's confortable to wear and it's only my opinion. :)
Thank you for the inspiration. Great job. Loved the picnic dress. Would be interested in seeing the black and white dress a bit longer. Suits you, but I’m thinking of me. As far as the questionable dress goes, you could try taking the pockets out. I think it still looks good, by the way. But rather than wasting it, if you find you are not wearing it, I wonder what it would look like if you turned it into a skirt and top , I think the problem is the fabric not totally suiting the style dress. I have a dress in my sewing room with the same problem, and I’m so gutted, I haven’t been back to try it on again for nearly two weeks. Very inspiring video" from up north where it’s a lot hotter.
Maybe for the second dress you can make it a gathered dress instead? Or modify it into a top? I feel like I don't often hear too much about people not being satisfied with certain makes, it's nice to hear that side! I feel super bummed when I feel like a wasted a fabric but I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one :)
The picnic dress is lovely. My favorite. I think the 2nd dress has a nice silhouette, but yes, the seam down the front draws they eye right there and makes it look plain. Can you convert it into a short or Capri length jumper? Like an all in one pant and top. Maybe take out the inseam pockets and put patch pockets? You do amazing work. I think you'll come up with something. Happy Holidays.
This was so fun to watch! I think your picnic dress (no1) is my favourite! I’m curious about the second dress and how you’ll adjust it to suit you. I think you’re right about the seam down the middle. But it’s such a pretty dress! Well done Janelle! Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 and I hope you enjoy some time off!
They are all beautiful. I think you should consider removing the pockets from the second dress, as they spoil the line - I reckon once that's done it will be just as lovely as the others. The first dress is my favourite both in terms of the style and the fabric colour. Absolutely gorgeous! You are so clever and so quick! I couldn't finish one dress in a day, let alone three 😯
im really loving these dresses.. very good at getting the fit, i hear ppl say there is lots of ease in big 4..must say, those runners look fantastic with it..i do like the 2nd, i think it might be a different look if it was knee length or just below...the picnic dress is my fav though..i like the colour and the whole dress looks great on you
Absolutely adore the picnic dress..perfect. The 2nd one is nice but I think removing the pockets and possibly some sort of belt maybe to dress it up a little also a little shorter too. Just love the 3rd once..so cute amd gorgeous. I would prefer to see strappy sandles rather than the runners. Strappy sandles would bring it to a whole different level and very feminine. Keep up the lovely work Janelle, I love your work and enthusiasm. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Lorraine..Perth
For the second dress I think you should remove the pockets and shorten it to the same length you made that pattern the first time. I think you'd end up liking it a lot more. Or remove the entire skirt and replace it with a solid paprika colored skirt. You could add cute little patch pockets to front of the skirt in the gingham fabric.
A bit of trim around that fantastic, lovely waistline of the second dress might help. I like the suggestion of shortening it, and slimming the sleeves, too. The others are perfection! Great job.
Love the 1st. Turn the 2nd to a jumpsuit, maybe a culottes type so the seam directions works 😊, 3rd seems just a but loose for your body-fit but I know that’s subjective. Great last vid to the year, look forward to more ❤️
Love the third dress! For number 2 I think sew shut the pockets and take it up like the previous one you made. I think the cut suits a mini style better!
I have run across quite a few vintage patterns with the seam down the front skirt. I have edited the front pieces to be a whole one with good success, you just have to make sure the edit follows the original drape and shape the two original pieces would have created.
I finished making the paprika dress in a blue gingham this week and I looove wearing it! I love your version. Have a wonderful break and rest of the year 🌟
Hi Janelle! ! Love all 3 dresses. #2 could possibly become a crop top with an elasticated pants to match. Thank you for all the amazing videos and knowledge you shared especially your projects. Happy holidays and remain blessed xxx
I think you could easily modify the second dress to make it work with the fabric by keeping the bodice and rather than going down into the skirt immediately, adding a band similar to the picnic dress and making a skirt similar to the picnic dress. There are enough similarities between the two that would cut down on work, and the picnic dress pattern would allow the brown gingham to align with the bodice. I really like the bodice with the brown fabric--I think it's really unique--and I'd hate to lose that part just because that style of skirt doesn't work with the fabric.
I agree with you that the vintage dress doesn't look right in that fabric, such a shame! The others are amazing as usual. Thank you for all your hard work this year helping to educate us. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours x
Hi Janelle, the McCalls turned out amazing! I guess there's a pattern issue as per other comments. regarding the second dress, I would (sadly) remove the pockets and make a two pieces coord. Maybe turning the skirt into large high waist culottes. keeping the rounded part of the bodice in the top. Idk, for sure no pockets, I have se same issue with A line dresses when I add pockets. Enjoy you Christmas/New Year time as well 🧡
The dresses are all beautiful, you did your best!! I think the second one you could remove the pockets, adjust the pattern, and put buttons down the front 💕💗
@@RoseryApparel I tried to remember the name where you do shearing. Lots of gathers, if you added extra fabric and did that under the bust, perhaps 😂😂not so great at sewing 🥰
This was so fun to watch! and I actually love the second dress! The only thing I would change would be to make it shorter; I think a midi length would put more emphasis on the top half and distract from the parts you don't like :)

All of the dresses are beautiful especially #2. It does complement you. It’s different from the others and that makes it stand out.
That 2nd dress would make a super cute jump suit! Mid-calve length bell bottoms!
I love the mccalls pattern, I’ve made it in so many different colours. But I find the bust pieces always need to be altered to fit. I’ve got a bigger chest, but a small frame. So I have to shorten the top to get it to look right. Just love the sleeve too!
Mm sounds like it’s a strange fitting pattern all around! Luckily for me it was an easy fix 😊
Also the second dress, the skirt. You should re do it in a block color? And more volume? More circle skirt? I love the bodice of it.
With your skills and creativity, oh absolutely!!!! Look forward to seeing it.
The bodice of that first dress would make such a cute crop top!
Love all of the dresses ❤️
The picnic dress is my favorite. I would love to see it in different colors. The last one makes me think of a doll’s dress, I can see why you like it!
Then you might be able to turn the bottom into a skirt that you’d like better - something with some gathers.
the second dress is my favourite, it's different and flattering on you.
Thank you! I love the bodice/sleeves of it, but yes I need to change the skirt up a little bit 😊
I LOVE the first one! It suits you very well!
Thanks! I’m soo happy with it 😍
I adore the brown gingham fabric! What about turning it into a jumpsuit? Thanks for another great video
The brown dress would be so so pretty as a jumpsuit!!
Love that idea! I knew asking the brains trust would pay off 😍
Great idea! Yes it’s a lovely pattern and lovely fabric. But a center front seam is hard to pull off with plaid especially cut on an angle
Turn the second dress into a jumpsuit! The seam down the middle makes it kind of look like a jumpsuit, and then taking out the pockets or adding patch pockets would make it super cute!
The crinkle comes back. I thought the same when I ironed it at first. Lovely dresses.
Thx.
I made a dress similar to the second one and hated it but when I took the pockets out I loved it! I actually love all of them
The beautiful chevron at the centre seam of the brown dress is wonderful.
I love the black and white short dress the best.
I also cut out 2 or 3 projects on one day and then sew them up one after the other. I don’t like the preparation stages. I love your videos as always.
I very rarely wear dresses, but absolutely love watching you sew. I love the black gingham one
Thank you! I’m glad you like watching along 😊
I like the first Picnic dress best. It looks cute on the sleeves.
Yeah I think I agree with you about the skirt, and I definitely don’t hate it! It just needs a bit of fixing 😊 Have a lovely Christmas Pat xx
I would keep the bodice of the second remove the skirt and add a cream gathered mini skirt similar to the Rosa dress. Then see if you have enough of the skirt to make shorts or a cropped pant.
I love the red gingham I’m going to look for that patter!
I actually love the second on on you, I feel it accentuates your figure but love all three!!! 😍😍
Thanks! I don’t hate it, but the pockets definitely need to go 😂
I love 2nd one. Absolutely different and looks amazing you. Now the pockets; maybe a different fabric. But don’t take them out.
I'm obsessed with the red one! I think the bodice on the second dress is lovely, maybe change it up with a gathered skirt or turn it into a jumpsuit.
The bodice of the first dress looks beautiful as a top too!!
I agree! I might need to make a top version too 😍
@@RoseryApparel i reckon you will! 🌺
Was going to say this as well, great minds....
yeah sorry about the second dress, perhaps convert it into a jumpsuit? It already has kind of a split in the middle
I thought the exact same thing!
That is a terrific idea. It would look amazing.
Great idea, I was thinking romper
Such a good idea! 😍
I think for the brown dress I would perhaps cut it in half and make a seperates kind of situation? and change the shape of the skirt a bit? love the other two! but the brown top section is so great!
Regarding dress 2 I would say turn it into a jumpsuit? It would look like a vintage twist on a nice jumpsuit.
I feel like the second one is more of a muted brown than you usually use, so that combined with the length feels a bit older than you usually dress
perhaps hem it again into a mini
I can see it looking gorgeous as a mini dress with sheer tights in the autumn
All McCall's patterns are huge. I remember reading on a blog or something that they add a lot of ease? I sew a size down when I use their patterns.
Ahh that would explain it then!
The second dress would be a wonderful jumpsuit.
Love your style. Could you turn the second dress into a jumper? I think it would be really cute. The picnic dress is my favorite as well.
I own the first pattern and it’s just been sitting in my bin .Well after this vid that will definitely change!
Great job as always!
It’s a really satisfying dress to make! 😍
@@RoseryApparel ❤️❤️❤️
I think the dress with the unflattering center fold seam would look super cool if you turned it into a jumpsuit!!
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you too 🎄🧡
They are all beautiful. I think you should consider removing the pockets from the second dress, as they spoil the line - I reckon once that's done it will be just as lovely as the others. The first dress is my favourite both in terms of the style and the fabric colour. Absolutely gorgeous! You are so clever and so quick! I couldn't finish one dress in a day, let alone three 😯
im really loving these dresses.. very good at getting the fit, i hear ppl say there is lots of ease in big 4..must say, those runners look fantastic with it..i do like the 2nd, i think it might be a different look if it was knee length or just below...the picnic dress is my fav though..i like the colour and the whole dress looks great on you
Love all the dresses especially the red checked dress. You make sewing so simple & easy. Well done ! I know it's very rewarding
I love number 1 it gives off retro 50s housewife style dress ( on you it looks gorgeous) it wouldn’t suit me but I love it on you
I think you could easily modify the second dress to make it work with the fabric by keeping the bodice and rather than going down into the skirt immediately, adding a band similar to the picnic dress and making a skirt similar to the picnic dress.
It’s a real shame, hopefully I’ll be able to fix it! Thanks for watching and have a lovely Christmas xx
Ooh I love the button idea! 😍
@@RoseryApparel I tried to remember the name where you do shearing. Lots of gathers, if you added extra fabric and did that under the bust, perhaps 😂😂not so great at sewing 🥰
I love the 2, is so beatiful. Yes, I'm agree , it's better without the pockets
This was so fun to watch! and I actually love the second dress! The only thing I would change would be to make it shorter; I think a midi length would put more emphasis on the top half and distract from the parts you don't like :)
