They both look excellent, well done. Glad I am not the only one who has sewing fails. My biggest fail was my own engagement party dress, got so frustrated with it I drop kicked it across the floor. Thankfully my lovely mum picked it up and finished it beautifully for me, that was 38 years ago! Good on ya mum!!
I’ve been sewing for many many years and I learnt that if you’re not quite happy with a garment you’ve made you need to alter it straight away as you end up never wearing it, so full marks Janelle for redoing yours after all this time 👏🏻👏🏻🧵✂️🪡
Love seeing how advanced sewists address mistakes they make or elements they're unhappy with. I love the way that second dress came out! Sometimes, a dress just isn't it's best with pockets. Great job!
I love the fact that you were determined enough to go back and fix things that were bothering you about those two dresses. It's so worth the effort when you end up with the look you wanted. Love them both! 😍
Great job on both! My high school sewing teacher, back in the 1970's, required us to always match up plaids and stripes at all seams, so that all the lines and squares were continuous with no mismatches. It was a painstaking experience laying the pattern pieces out, cutting, and sewing. We had to use lots of pins so that there was no slippage. Otherwise, we would not get an A, lol. Needless to say, we avoided choosing stripes or plaids for our projects.
Right now working on a new dress with plaid fabric and firstly I cared about the pattern but now when I'm in the middle of the project I dont care anymore 😂😭 I'd say my plaid pattern matching is for a good old C
I have only just watched this video Janelle and I love how the dresses turned out especially the 2nd dress after altering. The fit is absolutely beautiful. I have been sewing for so so many years and I think it's great idea to redo any sewing fails to enable us finishing and wearing the pattern that we wanted in the first place. It's definitely an extra effort. So well done. Great job!!!
Great idea to fix up these dresses. I have sewn for years & learnt a lot. Main comment is i would line up any checks or stripes. Fussy cutting uses a bit more fabric but much more satisfying finish. I sewed a frozen dress recently it had to be lined up as the princess Elsa was in rows! Also did my granddtr a gingham dress for xmas. Always a learning experience. Happy sewing!
The McCall's 7974 is one of my favorite patterns as well! You chose such a lovely fabric for it. And I agree with your final choice to keep the longer length on the plaid dress - it looked fabulous with your white sneakers. Beautiful work, as always! 😊✨
Thank you! I spent a good 2 months sourcing and making a winter jacket -only to realize after it was done that..why gorgeous it was not the style for me. So I regrouped and planning to make it work. See these videos helps remind me (& people) that no one is infallible, so that you again. and I LOVE how your second dress turned out!
I need to make that same alteration that you did on the first dress, mine is too baggy in the front as well, so thank you for showing us what you did! Both dresses look darling on you.
I like the remodel of the brown check dress. The maxi length is perfect but I feel it lacks some detailing. The addition of a couple of long, 4-5cm wide ties to the back of the dress (tied loosely in a single knot) could really amp up the vintage vibe and finish it off.
Vast improvement on that second dress! Looks great! I'm in the process of fixing a knitting fail. I really hated a choice I made by adding an odd purl row near the bottom of my cardigan. I had basically finished the whole thing. I ended up weaving some yarn through on each side of the "mistake" to hold the stitches and then I just cut the sweater pieces in half. Then I took out the offending row and actually added some length while I was at it. Then I joined the two halves back together using the kitchener stitch. Thankfully there are some great tutorials on youtube. I just finished reknitting the back piece and getting my knitting needles lined up. Now I have to weave it back together. Then block everything. Then seam it. Then learn how to knit the front band with buttonholes. I've actually never gotten this far before with a cardigan! LOL
I have sew only a few pieces and every time theres a bunch of undoing and correction notes for the next project, Im glad to know it gets easier, loved the results.
I love the alterations you made! For sewing buttons by machine, all you need is a zig-zag stitch, lenght 0, disable/lower the feed dogs, attach a button foot and choose the right stitch width for your button. There are loads of tutorials on it, and it made my sewing so much enjoyable, because I really like those button-up dresses like your first alteration.
This video made me so happy! I loved seeing your vision of the second dress finally come together, it's such a good feeling to give yourself a second chance and succeed.
Good job! I've probably produced a whole skip bin full of fails in my lifetime. Good for you for fixing yours up. As you say you already spend time and money on them so they were worth some extra effort. Inspiring!
This is such a creative idea for a video! So much of “creators” making sewing videos seems to be in the spirit of new content, but I’m so glad to see you fine-tuning your actual makes and sharing the process with us. It’s so educational and also so refreshing to see rather than the ‘as much new content as possible model’.
Hi Janelle, both look great now. With sewing the buttons on, its sooo quick and easy to sew them on using your machine..worth finding out. Keep up the the goodwork.
These transformations worked out so well. I know you are glad you took the time to remake the dresses into something you will definitely wear. In looking at the first one, although I do like the new skirt style, I think it needs something to break up the overall fabric design. Maybe a sash of sorts sewn into the side seams that ties in the back. Although it would still be made from the same fabric, the sash and bow would help to break up the almost monotone look. Or maybe several small buttons sewn from the neckline down the center front. Just a thought.
This was really fun to watch! I'm so glad you were able to fix those dresses so that you're happy with them, and that you took the time to film the process. As someone who is fairly new to sewing, it's reassuring to know that experts still make mistakes, and that there are ways to fix them!
I love how they turned out. I'm like you, I'd much rather fix the buttonhole side if possible before the buttons lol. I didn't realise the bust area was the issue when I made my suggestion.. thought it was just the actual low cut side of it. They both look awesome!
Love the new plaid dress! Very good fix. I started sewing clothes by altering and fixing opshop clothes as practice, before doing patterns. Love the video and your hair looks Lovely! 😊
I often change the pattern layout to be cut on a fold instead of a seam. I think it was probably done with a center seam because of the length and width of the skirt.
Great work. Looks beautiful. I'd add a narrow, abt 1 to 1 1/4 in. tie placed right at the bottom of the 'waist' line and left somewhat loosely tied at the back, with longish tails, but it's perfect as is. Great recreation.
Yay! It was great to see you adjust these two dresses and get them exactly how you wanted. Janelle you look so beautiful in both dresses and I am so happy to see your check pattern dress come out how you had envisioned!! It looks stunning, definitely autumn vibes with some boots 👢 🍂 🍁 Thanks for encouraging us to make adjustments to our own projects that didn't quite turn out right. 💕💖💗
If you hate hand sewing buttons on, you can actually do it on the machine. Just lower the feed dogs, set the machine to zigzag stitch with a width similar to the distance of the holes on the button and place the button on the fabric under the presser foot. Once you get the hang of it, it's extremly easy and quick. I think there's even a special foot that holds your button in place (but i get nice results even with a normal presser foot).
I have learnt so much from your videos. I’ve made the ruffled collar top, the smock dress and also did my own shirt hack. The Daisy dress is on my wish list! Thanks so much for creating such amazing content 😊
Nice job - I fix a lot too. Nice patterns and prints. Sewing patterns can sometimes be surprising but when u use parts of patterns u can draft a winner!❤️
Brilliant video! You should do more of these. Although it will be hard to show more as you always look lovely in everything you wear. It would be great to see you do a ‘fashion styling’ video for different body types and which of your patterns suit each best.
Don’t forget the picture of the plaid dress is a drawing as well. So some artist somewhere simply drew that plaid to run correctly. If only it was that easy in reality! Good choice removing the pockets on that close fitting A line too!
Gorgeous, we’ll done on the alterations, it is so helpful seeing someone else’s thought process. I think there will be a lot of UFO’s gotten out and finished now after this video!.
Yes! So glad you could fix the plaid dress and are happy with how it turned out. It does look so much better! :) Both dresses are really, really pretty!
Well done. The fix on the last dress is perfect. I love how you fixed both. I recently came across you here and am watching everything. Even though I’ve been sewing since l was at school it’s been my life passion. I love seeing how garments are made. You do a fantastic job on your tutorials. I think we keep learning all our life and at my age lm actually finding the occasional new way other than what l may have done. I’m self taught without any formal training yet l have done bridal stretch sewing lingerie, just about anything. Look forward to following what you do in the future. 🌹
I hate making alterations but they really are worth the trouble. Both dresses turned out really well, especially the second one. One thing though, I would have rather resewn the buttons as I’m petrified of button holes! 🤣
Both dresses turned out great! I often want to alter things but have no idea where to start so this was a helpful look at that process 🙂 Love the longer length in the second dress 😍 The fit is so stunning.
Janelle... You are brilliant and soooo skilled. Both piece look perfect on you now and extremely flattering. You are so comfortable with your skill and make it look so easy. I would love to make my own clothes as I can't find much now in my style ( the style you create) or it is so expensive you can't afford it. Maybe soon I'll just go for it and give it a try. Hope I don't waste good fabric? How would you go about selecting a starter/ easy skirt pattern? Right now it seems intimidating to me. Oh how I would love to do this. Thanks for sharing your talent with all of us. You are genuine and kind.
Aw thanks so much lovely! I recommend getting your hands on some second-hand/thrifted fabric if you can (bedsheets especially!) as it’s an affordable way to start and won’t seem as daunting to cut into. As for a good beginners skirt pattern, you could try my gathered skirt tutorial. A lot of beginners have made it with success, and it is just made up of rectangles of fabric 😊 ruclips.net/video/KvTp9PxbYGA/видео.html
The second dress had such a comeback! Both of the dresses were gorgeous. The second dress looks so interesting and modern because we rarely see maxi length dresses in not-super-drapey fabrics. There’s something vaguely Edwardian about it that makes it somehow extra modern?? Blew my mind!
Why not sew on buttons with the machine? It's super easy! Stitch length 0 and stitch width based on the holes, zic-zac setting (?) run the sewing machine "by hand" to find the right width, run it a few times and the button is SECURED! 👌🏻
@@RoseryApparel if you set your stitching length to 0 and lower the little teeth under the foot (what usually make the fabric move) you don’t need to worry about anything the button will stay in place! You just change the position of the button by hand for the second row of holes. Im a very beginer sewer and tried it for the first time today and it worked like a charm! Hope this helps!
This is the BEST! If you drop your feed dogs it will go back and forth with the zig zag stitch and not move forward. A lot of machines also have a button stitch ORRRRRR On my machines with the 4 step button hole foot with Steps 2/4 they have the stitch that does the top and bottom of a button hole. You can use that to sew on buttons! I will never hand sew buttons again.
I am literally wearing a dress that I need to alter as I watch this. However I am putting felt pads on the legs of my dining room chairs, which probably a procrastination ploy. Thanks for the encouragement!
Love your channel and as always looking forward to seeing what you are making. I have seen a similar checked pattern on Retro Claude about a year ago she made 194Os in a check sundress pattern it looked great as a sundress a vintage Mc Calls 7475 almost impossible to find the pattern now. Or A Vogue pattern that could solve your problem is the lovely jumpersuit short version 1664 or v1807 wideleg short version look are nice too
I've been sewing for 15 years and have won contests for my costumes I have made for craftsmanship, ans yet I tried to make a skirt the other day and had so much trouble with the band for some reason ugh
WhenI saw the thumbnail I was wondering why that white dress was a fail, I didn’t remember you saying something about it and it is so lovely! Great that it now suits you better 😊
It was always a little roomy in the bust, but since then I’ve also lost a little weight which made the issue even worse! Much more comfortable in it now 😊

The send dress turned out amazing and I do like the longer length. The bust looks so perfect. I love that.
Having to redo is so frustrating, but so worth it when you can “save” an item and make it a beloved piece.
So glad you could save the checked dress.
I love the fact that you were determined enough to go back and fix things that were bothering you about those two dresses. It's so worth the effort when you end up with the look you wanted. Love them both! 😍
I hadn't noticed the cool bust seaming on this dress when you first made it - the new skirt really shows it off!
