The gapeing in the back and the sides is because of the bust taking more fabric to go over. Her dress tecnically has it too, it's just less because her bust is smaller (outside of using a super flowy fabric that would than hang over the shirring instead) the only way around it is to make the shirring on a curve. It would have to be lower from apex to apex and then reach the higher level at the side seam. So the front would be measurement from overbust above the apex to underbust underneath the apex + 2isch cm and the back using the difference between the same heights in the back.
You did such a good job in not only explaining how to make Genell’s original pattern, but in realizing alterations/adjustments were needed for you. The vest/bodice you added certainly made a huge difference in both the fit and look of your creation. You must remember that she only shows tutorials on clothing suitable for her body type, and that is why they always look good on her. Don’t limit yourself to trying to replicate what she makes. You do you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for addressing the reality of these trendy designs for larger sizes. They are not generalisable across sizing. Great job in evaluating the changes needed.
I’m sure someone else has probably mentioned this but taking body circumferences only works if there isn’t much different between your back half and front half, aka you have a small bust and flat stomach. If you have a large bust and or a belly I find it’s best to make the front and back in different sizes.
oh my goodness! Your dress is adorable! I love the color and the way you've styled it! linen is going to be very comfterable, always a good choice. Thank you for the tips, I want to make this dress too.
Such an interesting video Amy. I love your analysis of everything and your problem solving. You also have a very engaging way of presenting. With your black bustier thingy over the top of the lilac dress you look amazing, so stylish. You are going to be helping a lot of people with this great vid. Thanks for sharing.
This video has saved my bacon! I couldn't work out why the Rosery Apparel shirred dress I'm making just wasn't working... and now I understand. I think I will be able to fix it now. Thank you!!!
I wish I could have seen this before attempting her “easy shirred dress” tutorial that she uploaded. The premise was similar (2 rectangles for the body and two for the sleeves). I made a dress with her instructions and it came out far too big for me and the sleeves were ENORMOUS. I ended up cutting the dress straight down the front side, taking it in like 4” then sewing it back together and doing the same to the back too for it to at least fit my body a bit better but I gotta still sort out the sleeves. It’s always a gamble with these types of tutorials as a larger bodied person. I just wanna find ways to make easy dresses for myself too 😅😭 I appreciate this video tho as it was very informative and I will know these things now when I move on to making this dress too. ❤
Yes!!! That's exactly why I made the video, I'm so glad you found it! Hopefully I will get to some easy beginner tutorials myself soon and I can help everyone out with some size inclusive options ☺️ thanks so much for watching and giving me such a lovely comment 💕
@@amyofmelbourne I’m excited to see what tutorials you come up with that are easier to tackle for folks new to sewing who are plus sized! Thank you! I'm glad I watched this before chopping into my fabric! I love watching Rosery Apparel's and Jess Dang's sewing magic, but I have never been brave enough to put scissors to cloth 😄 Any chance you would consider trying a Jess Dang tutorial for a plus-size coward, pretty please?? 🙏
I have issues with milkmaid sleeves too. I have worked out that if i sew a channel along the top of the sleeve leaving a gap in the middle I can put the elastic in and if it’s bugging me because it’s too big I can knot the elastic in the middle and then sew the gap closed. Works great
Thank you so much for this video. I was just about to try doing her tutorial exactly how it was and now I know to make some alterations first. This just likely saved me a bunch of fabric and time.
I bought a similar dress from Kmart for $30 which fit me well and copied that but added tiers to the skirt section. I watched Roseryapparel and other videos and analysed how the dresses sat on the makers’ bodies. I knew that doubling the chest measurement was going to make me look bigger so I made it 1.5 times like the Kmart dress. My sleeves don’t fall off my shoulders but I’ll cut a bigger triangle out of them and the bodice pieces next time so they will sit comfortably over bra straps. The resultant dress slims me down because less fabric used…so I will make a couple more dresses in different colours and probably add other features such as chest and sleeve ties.
That sounds fantastic! I love that as makers, we can find ready to wear clothes and duplicate them or use them to help us understand how a new piece is likely to fit. Thanks for watching! ❤️
Well done for giving this dress a go. When you made your sleeves with less fabric I thought that would've been a good idea for the back rectangle. So you just added an extra 25% to the sleeve so just an extra 25% to the back piece could've been all you needed. Otherwise I can see myself having a bust size bubble of material on my back. It's great that you found a way for keeping the sleeves on!! Thanks again for showing us how to do this !!!
I definitely do and did have a busy size bubble at the back and honestly I thought I would before I began but for the sake of following the original I went with it. Now that I have shirred the whole back bodice section it's a lot better but if I was doing it from scratch I think your right, 25% would be perfect! Thanks so much for watching!
I have just made this following the same tutorial. I wish I had watched your video first!!! I totally agree. The back is just too big and blowsy. I also find the dress quite uncomfortable to wear with all the bulk under the arm. It was a fail from me. Your dress, however, looks great. Thanks for a great video
@@stitchfergus9084 aw dang, I can say it's very salvageable, you can modify is with extra shirring rows and a tie across the back shoulders and it will feel amazing 😍
Thank you so much for this video. Although I probably wont attempt this dress, just seeing the alterations you made has given me some ideas of the challenges I will face with my own body. As a relatively new sewer I haven't been game to try and sew anything for my upper body which is plus sized with a spinal curvature meaning nothing is quite where patterns tell me it should be.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it and found it useful. Learning to fit is one of the biggest learning curves for everyone and is especially steep for plus sizes or those outside the "standard" if you have any fitting issues or anything you want help with let me know and I'll try to cover it in a video 😁
Great how you solved your problems and made it work for you. Just a couple of questions/remarks. I watched Rosery apparel’s video and there wasn’t a tie. She shirred the whole bodice and put elastic in the top of the dress (not a tie) and the sleeves. Also she cut the triangles in both the sleeves and the shirred body to give an adapted armhole which helped the sleeves stay on.
My main problem with this dress when I made it was the lack of arm holes, which makes the back sag, I found jess dang's shirred dress video which helped me when making dresses like this.
Also when I make dresses like this I make the bodice and skirt different pieces, the bodice being 1.5 x my bust and the skirt being what ever I want. I still mainly use rectangles but they have arm holes.
This is why I only attempt skirts when it comes to DIY no pattern tutorials. 😅 The only fit issue is the bulk of fabric gathering needed for the skirt to fit my huge hips sitting at a significantly smaller waist measurement, very beginner friendly adjustment! 😊
Thankyou so much for showing us your problems and how you fixed it! I love the stays they really enhance the dress..I love the colour of your linen too. I’m also looking at you old machine in the background I think I have one similar….a hand cranked singer I purchased from a garage sale for $35!
Thank you for such detail on how this pattern worked and the adjustments that you needed. I’ve been thinking of making this dress but had stalled on how to avoid the sleeves dropping, I’m broad shouldered, and was considering some back ties.
