This week I found out the owner of Papercut Patterns, Katie, has been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. If you've been thinking of purchasing a Papercut pattern, or if you'd like to purchase the Stacker jacket pattern I used in this video, please do as I'm sure Katie could really do with the love and support right now! You can shop Papercut patterns here: papercutpatterns.com/collections/patterns xx
Dhalia Sewciety here on RUclips has suggested only buying PDF patterns so Katie doesn't have to work at packing things while getting treatment. She's started a hashtag for it, too. Check out her video on it.
Me too 😂 Life’s to short for toiles (all though, I’m getting started on my cord trousers this week and I’m definitely doing a practice run for those first!) x
For future reference, I’d advise on always leaving about a 6” / 15cm opening in the lining of one of your sleeves. It’s how coats and jackets are bagged out in the fashion / tailoring industry here in the UK and it means that no matter what the instructions say, you’ll always have an opening to close out the garment! Your coat turned out gorgeous! 😍
Love the coat. The colors are perfect for you. Me too. If you cut 2 sizes of the collar pattern, it won't curl. Unless you want a stand up collar, of course. Also hem the lining, and the body of the coat separately tacking them together with long tacks at seams, etc. The lining will hang more freely. All in all, gorgeous.
I've only just started out sewing (my mum gave me her old sewing machine) and my first proper project is making a summer dress for my 2 year old, but I hope one day to be able to make clothes for myself and can only dream of making something like this. Your videos are always so easy to follow, I love them and everything you create
So inspiring Janelle! I'm the daughter of a now retired professional seamstress and the thought of making myself a coat is both exciting and daunting... the critiques can be brutal. I've learned to not share my projects until they're successful. It's awesome if I need guidance and expert advice though, so not all bad!
Hello! I'm still trying to catch up watching all the videos that posted while I was away visiting the grandkids. I hope you have a happy week ahead! Thank you for posting and sharing your talent.
found you from Maere makes, and I love your coat. Thanks for the comment about Katie, her pants 👖 pattern is just what I was looking for last summer, it's on its way now!
I have really been looking forward to this project and it didn’t disappoint 😀. I think you should go back to Spotlight and get the green woolly fabric and make another one. Maybe shorter with wooden buttons. That would be gorgeous too. Have a lovely week.
Hi Janelle, Thank you for sharing your courageous, second venture into coat making and the brilliantly successful results! I absolutely love the soft & cozy pink fabric you chose for the coat's outer layer and the beautifully fun pink & cream coloured plaid lining. By the way, your first coat--that was, literally, made from a cozy yellow blanket that had lovely, soft colored flowers all over it--was so perfect that I hoped to make one as close to your design as possible. Then, today, when I learned of your plans to make a second soft and cozy coat--that was similar to your first coat, only made longer and, now, pink this time--I began to think that you should have a line of coats based on these first two coats and organize to market and sell them worldwide. I just can't imagine anyone not wanting one. At the end, when your tutorial on coat making was victoriously concluded, I felt your joy as if it were my own and realized what a gift it was to be able to make such wonderful apparel. Not only do you now own the garment you love and can now enjoy wearing it; but maybe even more important is the joy felt and burst of confidence that comes from knowing you created this lovely item you are wearing. The choices made in its creation; such as, pattern style, fabric type in solid or pattern, colours used, and accessories selected customize the garment perfectly according to one's own taste and body size. It just doesn't get any better.than that in the world of fashion. I love your background soundtrack music and set design. I have come to realize that even the choices you have made in these respects foster a feeling of fun and calm. Therein, dramatically increasing your followers' desire to take part in the journey of fashion designer and seamstress taken with each new sewing project. A perfect example of the value in actually "making" one's dreams come true; rather than, having them handed to you on a silver pattern. I wish you continued joy and success as you go forward with your business. And, thank you most sincerely for believing in yourself, following your heart's desire and having a giver's heart that shares her journey enroute! 💖 Sincerely, Anita
Such a gorgeous coat! I love how you lengthened it, added the pocket details, and used the pretty upcycled tablecloth plaid inside. That color looks amazing on your too! 👏🏻👏🏻
It looks lovely Janelle. I used to use the sewing machine to attach buttons when I had a lot to do with limited time, but always pulled my loose thread to the back and tied off.
Your coat is beautiful I love it! You are so inspiring. When you sew buttons on the machine if you are sewing with a thick fabric, you can use a hump jumper tool to sit your button on so it has a longer shank for the thickness of fabric.xx
The only pattern I've ever tested in advance was for memory bears because I was so terrified to cut into the special fabrics! Love the lining on this coat ☺️ I made my wife a grey coat and she chose pink for the lining for a bit of fun! 💕
The coat came out so amazingly! I love the colour and you explain welt pockets in a way that makes it so easy to understand. Really enjoyed your video 💖💖
I rarely ever make a toile as it just adds so much to the time involved. I hate the cutting out process and the placement of the pattern pieces. I always need to make a narrow shoulder adjustment so the whole thing is quite a process for me so I admire people Ike yourself who are so passionate about sewing. I have made some great outfits for myself over the years just the same.
Wow! It looks absolutely fantastic! You’re so clever and an inspiration to me to start making my own clothes. Once I finished packing up my house and I’m in my new place, I’m going to start.
I have two unmade coats that I've been procrastinating on for longer than I'm willing to admit, but seeing the actual construction of a coat has made me want to work on mine. Thank you! xD I absolutely love the pink fabric you chose for this. The green was gorgeous too haha!
Amazing work Janelle, the coat is so beautiful! I found a woven doona cover in pink and rust colours that I can’t wait to turn into a coat, but I think I need to try some simpler garments first! I hope you release your own coat pattern with all the perfect details. Love your videos!
I've been hanging out for this video - and the coat is just as amazing as I imagined! And that lining... 😃 After you posted your sewing plans video I went straight to Spotlight to buy the same fabric. It's very inspiring to see it in a finished piece - I think I now have the confidence to have a go making my own 😊 (I agree - life's too short for voiles!)
Yes I can’t be bothered doing a toile either ha! I love this coat I want to try make in a green colour shade (same fabric) so it’s a matcha shade hehe but wondering how cheaper machines go on thick fabric I’ve only ever sewed cottons . Any tips re foots? Quilting clips a good idea I see
Coat looks amazing those colours look great on you I love the texture of the lining too makes it look even cosier. Just a side note your editing on these videos lately have been on point. The quality of the audio editing too much improved thanks for the extra effort it really has made a difference. 👍
Such a beautiful coat Janelle! I just bought the stacker jacket pattern and was wondering if you could tell me how much material I will need for this amazing project? Looking to make it a long coat just like the one you made. Cheers
When you unpick, do you finish the thread again by sewing the ends? I’m always unsure whether it will continue to unpick itself or not. Love the coat also!! 😍😍
Wishing Katie all my love to have the best outcome,x. Love your coat.Did I miss you sewing the buttonholes? Were they traditional or bound? Everything you make suits you 100%,
What fabric will you use for your third one?😉 This one looks great. I'm interested to know how easy it is to get on with a woven lining in the sleeves? I've always used something shiny.
I love your coat! I went to the link where info on your fabric was to be, but it just took me to the store. Can you tell me if it was wool, fleece, or ? I have watched so many of your videos and am binge-ing on them. 😀
i looove your coats videos! great job girl u nailed it it looks so worm and comfy ...wht about a denim bicker jacket? it would be awsome to try out for spring
I've seen some really cute biker jackets done in a stretch suede fabric. I reckon one of these would be really cute over a shift dress or with a simple circle skirt and tshirt for office or work attire or day to night wear. 🤔
Just rewatching this in preparation of making my own soon ! Wondering is it possible to sew the sleeve lining on at the same time as doing the sleeves? (if that makes sense)
Such a pretty coat! And it suits you so well! I made a coat last winter (we have summer here at the moment) and I made it unlined but endet up finishing all the edges inside with bias binding:D so lining would have been quicker I think. Love your videos!
This looks absolutely amazing! Thanks for sharing, I want to make my own long green coat once it gets colder and I have a bit more sewing experience. How much fabric did you use for the project? 😊
Do the buttons close well enough without a thread shank to fit over the thickness of the coat? When you sew buttons on by hand, you can adjust how “proud” the button sits away from the fabric it’s sewn to. But by sewing it flush by machine, doesn’t that remove the shank that allows the buttonhole edge to fit under the button? Just beware… The coat looks gorgeous, Janelle! The colour really suits you and it looks so cozy.
I love this coat, you have inspired me to make a coat for winter this year. For sewing the buttons with the machine, you might of had one of those strange grey forky plastic things with the accessories with your machine. You can use it between the button and coat to make space for the shank, then pull extra thread from the machine to bind it off. You can also use the little hole in one of the legs to help out put the needle into your machine!
Thank you for this video , I have wanted to try and line a coat, I have a light weight denim pattern coat that I have got in a patterned denim fabric it doesn’t include a lining but I want to line in it , I see from your finished coat , (that is beautiful I have to say ) , do I have to cut the lining smaller in width because I can see by my your coat that you have just made ,looks that way , am I correct ?and would it turn out right, you have given a fabulous idea which I love, is that to to put a wow lining in instead of the plain one , thank you xxx
Hi, just a question, what size needle did you use? ….. and another question, when printing up pdf patterns, besides the option of an at home printer, have you had any experience with using office works or other printing businesses? Thank you 😊
Janelle I love your coat great job. I recently watched a video by Bernadette Banner called Pressing the Tailors Secret to Perfect Seams. I thought this technique would have worked perfectly on your coat project. It is definitely worth and watch for future projects. I hope I can find some fabric like yours!
I love this! I've purchased the pattern and am about to buy fabric, but because this is my first-time pattern hacking and adding length, I'm not sure how much more fabric I need to buy. Approx. how much did you use? 😊
Yay I’m so glad you’re giving this project a go! The fabric I used was 150cm wide and all up I used about 2 metres (I bought 3m though, just in case I stuffed up the pockets) x

found you from Maere makes, and I love your coat.
Thanks for the comment about Katie, her pants 👖 pattern is just what I was looking for last summer, it's on its way now!

I also made a lined coat and it was so satisfying! It is in a vintage style and I've had people ask where i bought it. Love how yours turned out :)

It is very hot summer time where I am in the US, but you’re giving me great ideas for when it gets colder! Love that coat!
Beautiful! I love watching you make those pockets…so amazing!!
Nice. I’ve been all about that dusty blush pink color lately.
You should make the jacket in a lightweight canvas or denim for spring.
I made the jacket version of this pattern out of corduroy last year and love it! You can find the video here: ruclips.net/video/QuDuoWjseSY/видео.html
