+David Matthew Vinot, Jr ABC Sports was pretty much "in name only" anyway by this point. The moment that Disney took over, it was just a matter of time before all of the marquee events moved over to ESPN (while ABC would just get the table scraps whenever the contract like the NBA, demanded it or to keep the affiliates off of their backs), since they could exploit ESPN's lucrative subscription fee-advertisements duopoly. It's just that Disney had little choice but to keep the ABC Sports brand around because of union contracts. Only Al Michaels and soon to be retired Keith Jackson were the remaining links to the true ABC Sports era under Roone Arledge. facebook.com/Bring-Back-ABC-Sports-389251941089240/?fref=ts

+JoeGriego1 NBC"s "Sunday Night Football" has pretty much replaced "Monday Night Football" as the NFL's marquee "game of the week". Unlike w/ MNF, SNF has the advantage of flex scheduling and better production values (NBC took ABC's old MNF crew along w/ Al Michaels and John Madden).

Unfortunately by 2005 ratings for MBF had dropped because some of the games were between teams that didn't have a shot at the playoffs. SNF on NBC can switch a game with FOX or CBS and gave a marque game while it's impossible for MNF to do that.

To me, the beginning of the end for Landry in Dallas were the decisive shutouts in 1985: 44-0 to Chicago and 27-0 in the playoffs to the LA Rams

I remember this game. I was 13 and it was my introduction to Dan Marino and the two Marks. Dallas was a mediocre shell of it's former glory, by this season. They were lucky to even be relevant by the end of the game. If I remember correctly, Tony Hill tied the game by returning a fumble untouched for a TD. Marino came out and showed the Dolphins were the next era of the NFL, by zapping a rocket to Clayton, who tore through the slow Dallas secondary for a game winning TD.

Nope...Denver was 13-3, but one of the losses was to the NFC Bears. So after all the tiebreakers, the Broncos actually had home field due to better record against common opponents (thanks to having swept the Raiders and Chargers and the Dolphins having lost to both).

And this also may have marked the beginning of the end for the Tom Landry era in Dallas. (Coming in, this game would determine which team between Dallas and the Giants would lock up the last NFC wild-card slot {the Rams had clinched a wild-card due to Washington knocking out the Cardinals to clinch the NFC East}).

+garry simpson I wonder if it bothered Howard Cosell that he never got a chance to call a Super Bowl? The first year he was out of the booth (1984) was the first season that ABC was in the Super Bowl rotation.

+Terrence Clay ABC"s First Super Bowl Super Bowl XVIII. 1984? Was the Conclusion of Channel Four"s second year of week in week out coverage.of the NFL. British NFL Presenters Nicky Horne of London based Capital Radio and New Yorker Miles Atkin were really excited that Channel Four was transmitting ABC"s first ever Super Bowl. Here in the UK Howard Cosell was better known for his Boxing commentary. On the British version of Wide World of Sports just called World of Sport. [Whilst everybody was watching GRANDSTAND on the BBC] because the BBC had all the major UK and World sporting rights from 1955 until 1985 when pay satellite TV started. I don"t know about Howard Cosell being unhappy about not commentating on a SUPER BOWL,but as a UK NFL FAN,Why did the NFL make ABC Sports wait until their first Super Bowl in 1984? SUPER BOWL XVIII A former disabled UK carer. From the New Forest GOD BLESS!

+garry simpson Actually, the first ABC Super Bowl was XIX between Miami and San Francisco. Prior to that, NBC had all the Odd-Numbered Super Bowls, while CBS carried all the Even-Numbered Super Bowls (Except for the first one, which was carried by both)...

    • @garrysimpson1395

+WREYtube Thanks.Sorry I"m noi good at Roman numeral"s. So ABC"s first SUPER BOWL was SUPER 19? in 1985? Which would have been Channel Four"s third SUPER BOWL here in the UK. When MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL was cancelled axed as we say here in the UK. That meant that ABC could not broadcast a SUPER BOWL again? Except for SUPER BOWL 50 on ESPN DEPORTES three days ago? Why was ABC"s MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL axed? in 2005. Thank You GOD BLESS!

garry simpson To make a long story short, ESPN (the American Broadcasting Company's sister network through Disney) purchased the rights for "Monday Night Football". NBC took over ABC's spot in the Super Bowl rotation via purchasing the Sunday night NFL rights from ESPN.

I watch this saying that I wish that ABC Sports never merged into ESPN nor turned into ESPN on ABC and this is the reason why . Intros like this and competition in sports resources like this . I am sorry to say this but if what is out there today is not even a picture of the definition of anti competitive I don't know what is .

I know what you mean. I was lucky enough to see the last four years of the Pro Bowlers Tour on ABC Sports, which ran from 1962-1997, and boy was that a first class production with first class announcers. Unfortunately, just like Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, I don't think those days will ever come back.

The last 3 minutes of the game were WILD! Dallas wasn't that bad... they were playing for a spot in the playoffs in a competitive NFC... they would rebound to win the NFC East in 1985, but they were clearly a team in decline and, though no one in Miami realized it, so were the Dolphins (Their brilliant offense couldn't even overcome their insipid defense by the late 80s)...

Nope, this was indeed an important game for the Dolphins... had they lost, Denver at 13-3 would have had the tiebreaker and home field (Because both Miami's losses were vs. AFC West teams, the Dolphins would have lost the Common-Opponents Tiebreak).... but the playoff outcomes ultimately wouldn't have been any different, the divisional matchups were already set as per NFL rules at the time (Pittsburgh at Denver; Seattle/LA Raiders at Miami)... :)

Dallas won only 1 time in the Miami Orange Bowl in its history, going 1-7.
They lost twice to the Dolphins (in 1978: 23-16 & in 1984: 28-21). They lost three Super Bowls there (V, X, XIII).
Dallas went 1-2 in The Playoff Bowl (officially, the Bert Bell Benefit Bowl) was a post-season game for third place in the National Football League (NFL), played ten times following the 1960 through 1969 seasons, all at the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL.
Dallas lost in 1966 to the Colts 35-3. They beat the Vikings 17-13 in 1969. They lost to the LA Rams 31-0 in 1970.
