Every Monday evening the neighborhood kids would be down the street at our local elementary school playground having our own MNF game until the sun started going down. The ABC game used to come on at 9pm EST back then so we had time to get home, do a little homework, watch WKRP and then flip over and watch the first half before going to bed. Those memories...
Howard Cosell was considered a blowhard by many in those days, but I actually liked him as a great voiceover for Monday Night Football and a foil for Muhammad Ali.
As a kid in the 70s I would watch MNF with my dad. For me and my generation, when we think of football commentating, we hear Howard's voice. His over the top delivery was silly but fun. What a unique personality. And yes, his moments with Ali were amazing!
When we were in elementary school we used to stand around and when our classmates passed by, we’d intone: “and this man... hanging up his jacket” in Howard’s voice
This is actually the 1977 season opener (and my favorite theme MNF theme music). One of the hints it isn't 1976 is the famous NFL Films shot of Willie Brown from the January 9, 1977 Super Bowl is in the opening credits. Also, Alex Karras was the third guy with Howard and Frank in 1975 and 1976 (before the Pats whipped the Lou Holtz-coached Jets in '76, Karras sang the Jets fight song Holtz wrote.)
THIS was the first MNF theme I remember. I am afraid I was too young to appreciate Score by Charles Fox DBA Bob's Band - prior to the late 1970s I normally got only one TV station at home, unless there was cable, when you were lucky to get 12 stations...Sometimes we would get three stations at home if we didn't have cable but you had to be in the right spots...
ThIS is football to me. Whatever they're trying to pass off as football now in a kinder, gentler NFL is garbage. ESPN...bring this theme song back for MNF
@@sillygoose635 We'll agree to disagree on that point. The equipment is eons better now than back then, but the game was played much fiercer back then IMO
Life was so much better back when we didn’t really have anything
So so true
TRUE!!!
We had everything. We just didn't realize it.
Totally agree
Less is definitely more.
This was the best ever. Nothing today comes close.
The music and intro by Howard Cosell was epic! I missed though days!
Him and Muhammed Ali banter was memorable
If you were around back then, and loved sports it was a great time to be alive. I know it was for me.
Whoever originally recorded this did a damn good job. VHS was just coming out.
Blow into it when it's not working 😂
Best intro in sports ever.
AGREED!
Totally agree
Every time I hear that intro I'm hyped and ready to Monday night coach from my couch 😂
This song made me emotional! I used to watch mnf with my brother in the 70s. Best years of my life. Life was great & simple.

I remember the theme songs and graphics....brings back great memories....what a crappy Corona world we live....this is how to escape..

Howard's biggest problem was his insecurity...
If this is the start of the eighth year of Monday Night Football, as Howard said, this must be 1977.
Thank you for uploading this. Brings back fond memories of being a kid in the 70s and watching MNF with my dad.
Right on🥁🥁🥁
Ditto.
My parents let me stay up late to watch MNF. I'm sure my dad and I watched this game! Great memories!
When we were in elementary school we used to stand around and when our classmates passed by, we’d intone: “and this man... hanging up his jacket” in Howard’s voice
They show Willie Brown on his pick six. that happened in Super Bowl 11, this game was actually played on September 19, 1977
David Saucedo Bam! But then go figure how it wasthat the 49ers and the Steelers played again in'78 on MNF ?
Yeah, and cosell mentions that they're beginning the eighth year of mnf
@@luisignaciopenaespinoza6038, then 1978, just not ‘76 as advertised
This Monday night football intro is something I never knew i needed 💯👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Cosell made it sound so...important.
It was important... back then.
Miss those great days ! Nothing today even comes close to MNF back in the day!

Meredith called Raiders win in SB XI on NBC. This is 1977.
BACK WHEN FOOTBALL WAS FOOTBALL
The back when football was football took the words right out of my mouth!!!
It is today, this is nothing compared to now.
Simply GREAT
The good old days
Logos graphics
The real football
Loved every minute of it! even the odd couple had a great episode with Howard Cosell as a guest vs Oscar Madison!❤️
My gods those were the days
THIS is my MNF booth
this is my NFL.
There was NOBODY like Howard Cossell
Best Opening Song / Broadcaster combo
I am ready to watch the game!
1977 best intro in tv history
The late hits on QBs were something back in the day haha
Ironically, Heavy Action, the theme song for MNF, was originally composed for the UK Superstars show.

Damn.. absoolutely the best era...miss it
Welcome back Dandy Don!
The best !
This was 1977. Meredith worked for NBC in 1976.
ThIS is football to me. Whatever they're trying to pass off as football now in a kinder, gentler NFL is garbage. ESPN...bring this theme song back for MNF
You do realize that virtually none of the shown clips would have been penalties
@@brandonakin87 but they have brought back this song
this, THIS, is gentler football, a far cry from today's game where your career could end with a single blow.
@@troydefrancescotheplotagon3245 Not the first song... the MNF Theme song AFTER Cosell & Meredith
@@sillygoose635 We'll agree to disagree on that point. The equipment is eons better now than back then, but the game was played much fiercer back then IMO
This was the best of Monday night football, They also had Monday night baseball as well .
Classic!
Wow I cn this as a kid, soooooo long ago.
Thx 4 posting!
Awesome MNF theme!
Love the music.
Epic
It was funny when he kissed him and then said "yuck" lol
How made everyone feel like a superstar. This is Gino Smith LOL
This would have been the start of the 1977 season! Dandy Don was at NBC in 1975 and 1976!
The golden era of CTE
I agree
😂😂😂😂
I always thought Giff Cosell and Dandy Don were the best trio and should've stayed together longer but ABC kept switching.
NBC offered Don a deal he couldn't refuse
Gotta love cosell!
My favorite: Eddie Lee Ivory...he'll go all the way!
LOL....watching what linemen used to be able to do to quarterbacks.
Back when football was truly a contact sport.
This was barely contact. Try today's game and pray you'd last a second.
@@sillygoose635 tell that to Darryl Stingley at the time
Thats when monday night football was such
Franco rip.
Don Meredith has the same number as former Panthers' quarterback Jake Delhomme
Don meredith layed one on Howard cosell
1:26
johnny carson 13
Does anyone want to wreck stuff?
This is a lot better than watching Moss and Mcfarland act like a bunch of clowns.
No, instead Cosell and Meredith are the clowns.
@@sillygoose635 I'm right, you are wrong. You are the 3rd clown.
Who won the game😅
Steelers
T H I S is Monday Night Football. the clowns they have nowdays are horrendously god awful
They move so slow back then .
Much tougher though
this was 1978 not 1976
1977
NFL is Rigged and Scripted now days . I really do miss THE NFL
