Real football...played by real tough men. Even the commercials are fun to watch, and Howard Cosell with Frank Gifford made MNF the best back then. I was 5 days short of my 13th bday when this game was played. Watched it live. Good times!
Those Cosell highlights at the beginning..."the sophisticated Bob Griese"... because wearing glasses=sophisticated 🤣👍 love this shit, man. 70s Americana is the absolute zenith of humanity
One of America's GREATEST SYMBOL OF AN ICON WITH THE OILERS LOGO AND TEAM COLORS. De Ja Vu gives this feeling when seeing these images of the Oilers, a vibe like being back in time of the day you were watching these games. Their merchandise of the Oilers should not be cheap but big value for being so classic of the appeal and rare as the team no longer makes such merchandise. A copy version of the copyright date in 2000s, should be giving away.
Living in Lake Tahoe for this football season, ('78) I was able to see in person the great rookie Earl Campbell lead the Oilers to an impressive road win at Oakland. The season ended for them with their loss to the eventual Super Bowl champ Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC title game. The next season, they'd return again to the AFC title game, and again lose to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Steelers. Great games those were.
3:13:20 - I watched this run live as an 11 year old Dolphin fan and it crushed me. Will never forget the image of Curtis Johnson desperately trying to chase him down.
Poor Houston does not even have an original football team anymore. Miami nothing to speak off since 1973. Nevertheless in 1978 this was the best Monday night football, ever.
@@ironbeatyfly / No problem! I just hope that they let some of those others games post. Do you know Richard Waldrup? He has a bunch of games up, and they never get taken down.
This is actually Week 12. November 20, 1978 I saw this game (and this same broadcast on the Houston ABC affiliate) on a 12" color TV in a dorm room at Texas A&M. My memory of the flow of the game was completely wrong. I thought the Oilers got a big lead early in the second half then held on. Nope. The 12 point lead was with about 1:12 left. Celebrity ads Cliff Robertson for Buick Jimmy Stuart for Firestone Dick Van Dyke for Polaroid Plus there's a news brief for the Jonestown Guyana murder-suicide. If you don't want to watch here's the short version: Bob Griese carved up the Oilers secondary all night long. The Oilers secondary gave up over a half dozen long completions for first downs, two of them on third and long. Houston only won because of two drive-killing drops by Miami on 3rd downs. The score was 21 all after three. Early in the 4th Houston held, Miami punted to Houston's 3 and on the first play Pastorini was sacked for a safety. Houston down 23 - 21. The previous year's defensive rookie of the year, A. J. Duhe, wrecked his left shoulder pulling Pastorini down and went to the locker room. The loss of Duhe was the end for Miami. Houston held, Miami kicked into the end zone and Houston walked the ball down the field to go up 28 - 23 with Earl's 3rd TD. Griese continued carving up the Oilers secondary but a deflection interception with a clipping penalty put Houston inside their own 10 with 3 minutes left. Earl got a first down after the two minute mark at the 19. Then the end around to the right we've all seen in Earl Campbell highlights. 81 yards later Houston is up by 12, 35 - 23. Griese uses all of the 1:06 remaining, carves up the secondary again, ends up with 349 yards on the night and tosses a TD with no time on the clock. With that 81 yard run Earl had 199 yards on the night and vaulted into the lead for league rushing yards. Earl could do nothing up the middle. It seems that all the up the middle runs were to scare the Miami defense into shading the defense to plug up the middle. Three of Earl's TDs were running wide. One to the left early, two to the right in the 4th quarter. With one 6" TD up the middle also for a 4 TD night. The Luv Ya Blue era was something special for a city whose football team had been mostly awful since the 1963 season. The defense played pretty good most of the time and very good occasionally. Earl made the O-line look better than it really was. But Pastorini was only good not an elite QB. Their season would end when Pittsburgh stomped them in the AFC title game in Three Rivers Stadium.
So this is the first year of the 16-game schedule, and Meredith was contracted for only 14 games per year. This must be one of his arranged absences. He picked the wrong game to skip.
35:52 - Should have been a TD? Tremendous run by Campbell and he scores on the next play 1:49:19 - Campbell TD 2:06:54 - Where are you going Delvin Williams? 2:50:29 - Campbell TD 3:02:24 - The run everyone looks for
As a 'slightly biased' native Houstonian, and Luv Ya Blue! fan... it IS the greatest MNF game ever! Anytime a conversation gets steered towards great games or great players, I ALWAYS refer to this game and in particular, Earl Campbell's 199 rushing yards and 4 TD's performance. This truly was the pinnacle time period for football in Houston.
Frank Gifford was a great play by play announcer but because he was an ex player, he should have been the analyst and Howard should have done play by play in this game.
@@ironbeatyfly im sure something to do with debauchery, jail, booze or all three were the reason he wasnt there...lol. Don was a wild stallion, man. He didn't g.a.f.
I was 5th grade and went to that game with my dad. We sat in the Mezzanine section 30 yardline on Miami's side. Will never forget this!
Monday night football was such an event back in the 70’s. Outstanding
I remember watching this game... to be 12 years old again

Hearing Giffords voice say..'from a jam packed, rockin ______" at the beginning of every Monday night set the tone.
I was 14 years old and new to NFL. Remember seeing that run like it was yesterday. MAN! I miss NFL from 70s and 80s. Truly magnificent game.

The lead up was second to none. Dam, life was good

5:24 what a gem of a man. They sure don't make em like O.A Phillips anymore.

Earl and Bum Phillips were beloved by Houston Oiler fans. That was a great era in football.

I was present with my family at that game.
This was the first time I had to turn down the volume watching the game because of the crowd noise. The fans never sat down.
The uniforms for both teams are 10 out of 10.
This was football Earl Campbell was on a different level
Seen this one a couple of years ago, but the quality is much better on this one.
Thank ya bro, I usually don't like to post a game already on here unless its complete and a little better in quality.

Howard Cossell
Coach Phillips, why does Earl Campbell take so long to get up off the ground?
Because he takes so long to go down on the ground.
This was week 12 actually
Frank Gifford was a great play by play announcer but because he was an ex player, he should have been the analyst and Howard should have done play by play in this game.
Howard cosell. Great times
This was indeed a classic.
Do you know how to get the full broadcast of the Dolphins and Raiders later this same season?
So it was just Howard and Giff calling this game then? There wasn't a third commentator that night?
Nope, no clue where Dandy Don was that night
