Thanks for sharing this one. Garrison Hearst and the 49ers went off on the Panthers this night, and took back the division in 1997 with a 13-3 vengeance.
Yep it still just doesn't seem right. So many stars and hall of famers all over the field for them that year. I believe there's an argument to be made that 97 was the best team they ever had. And all the recent wins against Green Bay don't come close to making up for all those years during my childhood when the Niners just could not beat them. Even the year after this when they finally "won" against them I couldn't enjoy it because it only happened when they blew the call on the Rice fumble. I still can't stand the fudge packers.
@@bobross1550 It was just hard to see how this 49ers team could beat the Packers with Rice re-injured and Hearst also out. Not enough offense. (Similar to the previous year when they had to face the Packers with Steve Young injured.)
@@bobross1550Good team, but not the best team they ever had regardless of the name talent around. Rice was basically out the entire season. Hearst later got hurt. 49ers also got blown out at KC, and SEA. Most of their SB teams make '97 an afterthought.
those 49ers teams from the 90s…so many memories, seems like every single year they were always in the conversation to come out of the NFC, even in those years when they were battling with either Dallas or Green Bay; that slow, surgical ten-minute drive in the 4th quarter to kill the Panthers’ momentum and seal the game was impressive
Looks like this was taped from the ABC affiliate in my area(KOMO-TV; I was born and raised in the Seattle area) Incidentally, for those who read this that are not from the Seattle area(which is probably a lot of people), this was around the time that KOMO-TV stopped tape delaying MNF an hour, and started showing the games live every week. Prior to the mid 1990s, other than the Seahawks(if the Seahawks were at home, and if it was sold out that is), KOMO tape delayed MNF and showed the games starting at 7 PM pacific time instead of 6, so that they could show local news at 6 instead...
I actually like when uploaders leave commercials in these old games. Normally because I think it's interesting how you can see or hear a few seconds of a commercial you haven't seen in 30 years and it instantly comes back to you. But the Sprint commercial at 2:25:08 is one I had never seen before and even though it might as well be ancient history now, it just does me some good to see George Seifert, who'd just been fired after leading the Niners to the super bowl 2 years earlier, appear in a good-natured commercial with Mariucci who had just replaced him. That shows a quality in George I'm not sure I would have had if I had been in his situation. Also insinuating that he was still calling the shots for the 49ers while relaxing at the beach was kind of funny. I always thought Seifert got pushed out a little unfairly, and felt the same way about Mooch when his time came. Jim Harbaugh too many years later. Anyways thanks for the upload, I watch these old games like movies. Just never had seen that commercial before and thought it showed a really nice moment between two coaches who could understandably have some hard feelings towards each other.
i was 14 in 1997 a freshman in high school in greenwood mississippi i watch this game on the regular tv with those rabbit ears antenna yes my aunty told me watch the game you have your snacks after the goes off get ready for bed.
if you have any 1996 carolina panthers game , really looking for that 1996 Week 1 Falcons @ Panthers , 1996 Week 4 49ers At Panthers and 1996 Week 11 N.Y. Giants @ Panthers .. also been looking for 2003 Week 10 Buccaneers @ Panthers , If you have any of these games please upload them Thanks! :)
before Carolina joined the league there were 14 teams in each conference, so the divisions were 5-5-4. instead of moving teams around they put them in the West which had been the one with 4 teams
Man thank you for posting this game! I love the 49ers of old days and the MNF crew is the one I loved the best! It's great to watch real football
1997 was the first year that they started using the score/time graphic constantly on the screen.
Thanks for the game

This team should have gone to the Super Bowl.

R.I.P. 🪦 Sam Mills and Kevin Greene
Chris Doleman too
Thanks, Jamie. I have been looking for 1997 49ers games, especially this one, for a while!!
These old cell phone commercials really show how far technology has come
I know 1997 feels like the dark ages now, totally different compared to now
This was revenge for 1996, the 49ers self destructed in that Dec game at Candlestick the yr before against the Panthers
Damn these commercials make me feel old. Now know how my dad felt when he saw things from the 60’s when I was a kid.
Merton Hanks had the best celebration dance
Only Everson Walls has more career interceptions on Monday Night Football
That Lucent commercial is wild. I keep forgetting the internet got popular in the 90s
It became popular in the 90’s, and the past decade or so, it’s become seemingly everything.
thank you JJ!!

RIP Kevin Greene, Chris Doleman & Frank Gifford 🙏 🙏
Kevin Greene debut with the 49ers against his former team the Panthers.
Then he went back to the Panthers the year after lol.
What a time.... obviously you have Steve and T.O., but Merton Hanks and Bryant Young man. Just jumping off the screen in every one of your videos.

1:37 MNF intro
Do you by any chance have the 1998 week 2 Monday nighter at Washington?
Ah yes the good ol days when the Panthers, Saints and Falcons were in the NFC West.
College Football is now in need of a similar geography lesson. Mostly for California and Stanford in the ATLANTIC Coast Conference.
Imagine if this 49er team didn't lose Jerry Rice in week 1, scary thought.
Why was a team from Carolina in the NFC West?
before Carolina joined the league there were 14 teams in each conference, so the divisions were 5-5-4. instead of moving teams around they put them in the West which had been the one with 4 teams
Ah yes, Carolina was supposed to take over the division that night. That didn't happen.
1:07:27. Damn Rae Carruth.
1:36
Carolina lost this one, but weeks later won in Dallas
