Hanburger called every defense from the huddle, no ear piece in his helmet, no coach in the press box telling him what to call, he did this all on his own, down and distance, identifying Cowboys player personnel packages, adjusting his calls based on Redskins nickel and dime personnel ,he knew everyone’s assignment on the defense, and had over 250 audibles memorized . Now I'm going to tell you what you didn't know about this game. The Redskins noticed while watching film that when the Cowboys had the ball, running back Robert Newhouse would let his mouthpiece hang out on plays when the Cowboys were going to pass and would stick it in his mouth on running plays when he knew he was going to have to block for Tony Dorsett. The result was the Cowboy offense sputtered in this 9-5 loss. The two teams played again on Thanksgiving Day, only this time, the Cowboys knew about the Newhouse situation. So Dallas turned the tables. On running plays Newhouse let his mouthpiece dangle from his facemask, and stuck it in his mouth on passing plays. The Redskins took the bait. The Cowboys cruised to a 20-0 halftime lead and eventually built the lead to 37-3 in a 37-10 win. The things teams find when they study film is amazing.
Yeah. They beat their ass on thanksgiving. My uncle lived in DC and another nugget..he owned a few cabs and drove redskins players. He came to visit for the holiday He said before the game came on the redskins players told him they are wasting time going to Dallas because they were going to lose.
This is extraordinarily high quality video from a 70s TV broadcast. Having attended many Redskins games at RFK, the audio, which has an nice analog quality to it, really captures the ebbs and flows of the crowd and generally the ambience of the stadium. It’s amazing how loud that stadium could get with 55,000 fans. I’ve watched several videos of old games but this video brought back the sensory experience so fondly remembered. Thanks for sharing!
Great quality of video so thanks for posting and this was the last time a current U.S President attended a NFL game and here in 2022 Jimmy and Rosalyn are still alive which is amazing . Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon attended NFL games while they were President as well and Howard Cosell Don Meredith and Frank Gifford are still the best MNF trio ever.
@@patrickmackin3579 I think they encourage the president (any president) to not attend as security needs to be arranged and it can make life tough for the regular fans
At 0:34 the guy in the blue leisure suit is Special Agent Robert Wanko, aka the guy holding the uzi after Reagan was shot. He passed away on July 11th 2023.
Great game and very memorable. I would like to see the final game of the regular season in 76' when the 'Skins' had to win in Dallas to make the playoffs. I remember George Allen tearing down the anti-Redskin signs after the victory. That is the first Redskin-Cowboy game that I remember. I was hooked after that one.
ESPN wrecked Monday Night Football And helped wreck the NFL. Cosell is awesome, not worried about offending anyone and tells it like it is. Mosley bangs a 52 yarder. Thank you so much for posting.. I can't believe how much in enjoyed watching this..
The old burgundy Redskin jerseys were sharp.. They didn't wear them often thru the 80s and 90s. And now they have these generic helmets and bland Commanderskin jerseys. Makes me nostalgic for this look.
Some of the best broadcasters if not the best of all time. Monday Night Football, turn the lights out the party is over. Some that come to mind are( oh my ) Dick Enberg and M.Olsen. Vin Scully and one of the latest and greatest, Madden and Summerall. Can’t forget Curt Gowdy and Brent Mustburger. I will miss them all. They made the game so much better than it was.
I was there. I've only been to five Washington games in my life but this was one of them. I was in end zone seats near where Joe took the safety. Unfortunately that great goal line stand took place at the opposite end of the field. The fans at RFK were crazy loud and raucous in those days. The stands would shake, you'd have thought the stadium was going to come crashing down. This was one of the great regular season wins in Washington history. Been a fan since 1961.
I was 7 years old when this came out.. I was not yet a full converted Redskin fan.. my team was the Steelers but growing up in a Redskin house it was going to happen.. growing up in Washington DC during these years the whole family was Redskin fans
@@tvgator1 Who can forget THIS game? The hated Thiesman running out the clock & taking a safety on the last play of the game while waving the pigskin at the oncoming "Manster"!
I always loved the Monday Night Football intro ABC was using in the era with the Oakland Raiders helmet being the first one shown because they were the undisputed kings of M Monday Night Football in the 70's!
Howard Cosell gives a great opening monolog, from the description of the two great monuments in DC to the introduction of the President on screen, to the booing is for the Dallas Cowboys and then finishes it off with Dallas vs Washington with President in attendance 👏 I thought it was great and got people interested in the game.
I love this. I remember watching this when I was 15 yrs old. The Redskins started the season 6-0, but finished 8-8. This was the first year of the 16-game schedule (1978). The Cowboys won Super Bowl XII and was the powerhouse in the NFC. I thought for sure Roger would do his last minute heroics, but it wasn't to be. Nevertheless, Theismann almost gave it away if he fumbled instead of the safety in the end zone on the very last play of the game.
OMG, Howard Cosel and Monday night football in RFK. Couldn't get any better than that. I was at a football camp run by lb Harold McClinton during the summer. Redskins were pretty good that period.
Oh dear mother of god!!! I've been looking for this game forever, you have outdone yourself. Your last two posts have been very rare games, and very good quality as well. How will you top these last two posts, it will be tough to find better/ rarer games. thanks
Remember this game like yesterday. My aunt was in a MNF office pool where you purchase blocks and had the Redskins score ending in 9 and the Cowboys ending with a 5. She knew nothing about football and asked what the odds were of her winning. When told they were not good due to scores rarely ending in 9 and 5, she went to bed. Of course the Redskins were leading 9-3, with the ball, running out the clock. They took a delay of game with three seconds left, then Theisman runs into the end zone for a safety. We stormed my aunt's bedroom and woke her up to tell her she won 25 bucks! What a country. 🙂
The Redskins and Cowboys from 1971-1992 was simply the best rivalry in the N.F.L. They won a combined 5 Superbowls in that time frame. This was a fine game but not even close to one their top 10 games in that era!
Top 5. Redskins were doing great at that point in the season and the Cowboys won the Super Bowl the year before and it's on Monday Night with Frank Don and Howard. Top 5.
I don't know. I would put it in the top ten. This was a good one and a key one. Plus it was on the original Monday Night Football and it was at the height of the rivalry. This era of Redskins and Cowboys truly hated each other.
@@tesla-v2681 Only because it was in the Golden age of Monday night football I would consider it a top 10 game between those 2. Believe me, those two had better games in that era.
Watching this game brings back some great memories. I used to live in Virginia and went to 2 games at RFK. I started watching Monday night football in 1972 and I watched almost every game and I was a die hard NFL Monday night football fan because at age 10 living in Virginia the game started at 9PM to midnight.
Frank's expert play by play is truly legendary, so fantastic to watch. Today's play by play crews are so stale and boring (except for perhaps Jim Nantz and Al Michaels.)
I'm a die Hard skins fan unfortunately I was Born in 95' so I didn't get to witness the glory years but man I love this franchise, the history and tradition. And they screwed it up with the C word. HTTR forever.
Cowboys and Redskins had great epic games in the 70’s and 80’s,, RFK stadium had a unbelievable atmosphere for Football games especially with great Redskins fans and great Redskins teams,,,Greatest Rivalry of football is the Cowboys and Redskins,,,
People like myself and others will always remember the rivalry,, today’s NFL or the last 10 to 12 years has been a shell of their former self and totally unwatchable. I choose to remember the real NFL from the 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s , I guess the first few years of the early 00’s wasn’t that bad…
@@mgomez5606 Yeah I totally agree, today’s players are just there for a paycheque and endorsements so. they can buy a mansion or two and some Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s,,,
My dad won the 1978 season tickets in an office pool, Arlington County Highway Planning, and he kept this game and one later in the season against the Miami Dolphins. He picked me up after school/workday, we had pizza at a favorite spot in Arlington, then took the incomplete freeway into the parking lots at RFK. This was an amazing experience. I was 13 years old. Roy Jefferson was seated just a few rows behind us. We were in the home plate corner of the end zone where the safety occurred to end the game. I thought C. Waters was gonna force a fumble. When dad was in his 80’s, I took him to a Nats game at RFK. We sat in the same corner, just a section higher in the stands. I hated when JKC built in Landover, and am now a Packers fan, since the Redskins are no more. Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed reliving it in 2023.
This random game showed up in my feed. Not a fan of either team, but living in the DC area I know all the players from my childhood. Started watching just to see these all-time greats play not knowing who won. I couldn't stop. What a great game.
The intro music was the spine-chill catalyst in that '78 era (Wash.v.Dal.). That was the best of them all. The two worst teams could be playing, but that incredibly intricate jazz orchestra prelude brought me to the couch to stay for 3 hours. ABC, bring it back
41:08 nice DIRECT SHOT at Landry by Don Meredith here; those two didn't always get along. Also, remember the movie NORTH DALLAS FORTY came out at right about this time (1978) in theatres and it was loosely (or not so loosely) based on the Dallas Cowboys and Landry's coaching style. Love that comment....
I like these classic commentators, and how they really keep the game calling moving along, with great color commentary. I'm really talking about Frank Gifford and Don Meredith. Howard Cosell I like, but he's just a cheerleader.
I love sports from the 70s and 80s, hell even the 90s were good. It was the best time for sports, it was after TV came around so you could see a decent amount of games, but before the 24 hour coverage saturated the market and made sports coverage something that makes you want to vomit. There was just enough sports on to get you pumped to see it. Fuck sports today, I can watch for about 5 minutes tops.
ABC Sports had a busy day on this Monday. That afternoon ABC broadcast the famous Yankees/Red Sox one game playoff from Boston. In addition Howard Cosell had a busy week. After this game he flew to Kansas City for the ALCS Game 1.
I've been looking for this game for a long time. I don't suppose you have the '77 Cowboys v. Cardinals MNF game or the '76 Cowboys v. Colts game do you? Thanks.
Don Meredith: "these two guys (Landry & Pardee as players) didn't know how so much so they kept asking why and I guess they make good coaches when they keep asking why" These announcers are great. Meredith is underrated as an analyst. But Frank did screw up and call it "JFK STADIUM" several times...
This was the greatest rivalry except for maybe Bears Packers these two teams hated each other unlike today it’s not the same. The 70s and 80s were such a great times. I miss them. I miss Gifford Cosell and Meredith …in the DC area I miss listening to Sonny and Sam broadcasts. Such great memories
I was a kid and was a little abnoyed at Thiesman at the end. Instead of tucking the ball in and running out the endzone, he held it up where it could have easilly been knocked out of his hand .
Just hearing Howard Cosell from the start and watching the intro ,awesome memories when I was 9yrs old and can't leave out Frank and Dandy Don thanks youtube😅!
I remember my pop warner coach using this game as an example the next day at practice. "If you hit hard enough...you can beat anyone". This was in NY so I was thrilled that my team was used as an example. But man this season went down hill fast for Pardee's gang.
I'm so excited I had to post again. This was just an absolutely AMAZING game, despite the fact that NO TDs were scored and it ended up 9-5. One of the most brutal, emotional and just INTENSE games every played between two NLF teams, at a time when the Redskins/Cowboys rivalry was just EPIC. Unfortunately, Pardee's teams always seemed to fall apart in the home stretch. This year was the beginning of that for the Redskins. It's pretty hard to start a season 6-0 and NOT make the playoffs, but that's exactly what this team did. They looked amazing the first half of the season, and then just utterly fell apart the second half, missing the playoffs at 8-8. The next year, they are up on Dallas by 13 with just under four minutes to play in a "winner take all" game, and they blow that lead with just some terrible playcalling and a crucial fumble, miss the playoffs. If you recall, Pardee was also the coach of the Oilers when they were up 38-3 on the Bills in the playoffs and ended up LOSING that game. Ugh. At least the '79 loss led to Gibbs, so it all worked out in the end. But this, man ... this is just ... incredible. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this available when you didn't have to. I've got tears in my eyes right now, thinking of how much this particular game meant to me at the time. My Dad let me stay up and watch the whole thing, a rarity, and when Theismann ran into the end zone to take the safety, it was just ... bliss. Thank you.
This Redskin team was not deep and many of the starters, though excellent, were near the end of their careers. I attribute the late season collapse mostly to age. They just couldn't keep it up the intensity for 16 games.
Probably the worst game I ever saw Roger play, he usually makes that completion at the end. Great game though, intense heated rivalry, the crowd was into it and the announcer were on point. This was the heyday of the NFL when MNF was an event and these two teams really hated each other.....made for an epic game.

Is that true that no President has attended an NFL game since Carter? That's very surprising.
@@patrickmackin3579 I think they encourage the president (any president) to not attend as security needs to be arranged and it can make life tough for the regular fans
I was there. With my dad. 9 years old. What a memory! Thanks for posting!!!
What a strange Wash/ Dal game.....usually high scoring. GREAT VIDEO, GREAT MEMORIES OF ABC/MNF THANK YOU... SO GREAT TO SEE TOM LANDRY AT WORK!!!
Always loved watching Chris Hanburger, Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett.

Very interesting
Excellent quality on this. Pretty sure Dandy Don was a little drunk in this one.
Only cuz he gave in to Frank a bit too soon.
Tenia 8 años y ver está gran rivalidad Cowboys por siempre y los pieles rojas un gran rival lástima lo q son ahora ..😔
One of the all-time great games. I was a huge Cowboys fan back then and hate Thiesmann for years because of that last play.
ESPN wrecked Monday Night Football
And helped wreck the NFL.
Cosell is awesome, not worried about offending anyone and tells it like it is.
Mosley bangs a 52 yarder.
Thank you so much for posting..
I can't believe how much in enjoyed watching this..
Cosell told it like he thought it was. Sometimes right, many times wrong. Playing the game counts for something and that made him insecure.
Still a fan ?? Commanders ?? Come on man !!

Classic Monday Night Football. I might even have seen this game live on TV when it aired. I was a diehard MNF viewer back then.

Those were the days! I totally miss Howard and the boys!
It was pure genius for ABC in putting Howard with those two former stars.
One of only two Dallas-Washington meetings on Monday Night Football in the 1970s. The other was in 1973, also a Washington win at RFK.
They play on MNF in 1971 against the Rams in L.A.
Allen's first game against former team.
Super Bowl XIII was played that season, DALLAS LOST TO PITT 35-31. DALLAS BEAT MY BRONCOS IN SUPE XII 27-10 IN JAN., 1978..

THE very Best TV REPLAY for sure!
OMG, Howard Cosel and Monday night football in RFK. Couldn't get any better than that. I was at a football camp run by lb Harold McClinton during the summer. Redskins were pretty good that period.
The Bucky Dent game was earlier that day too. What an awesome day for a sports fan.
Not such a great day for the Red Sox though
How did Howard or even Frank miss THAT?
Howard would always include anything relevant at the time. History is always ongoing and Cosell saw it as such.
Oh dear mother of god!!! I've been looking for this game forever, you have outdone yourself. Your last two posts have been very rare games, and very good quality as well. How will you top these last two posts, it will be tough to find better/ rarer games. thanks
Really it all comes down to time, mood and what is allowed to get posted and not instantly blocked.
It was the best rivalry for "bad calls" and "great non calls".
Watching this game brings back some great memories. I used to live in Virginia and went to 2 games at RFK. I started watching Monday night football in 1972 and I watched almost every game and I was a die hard NFL Monday night football fan because at age 10 living in Virginia the game started at 9PM to midnight.
7 pm in Utah was the perfect football game time.
Frank's expert play by play is truly legendary, so fantastic to watch. Today's play by play crews are so stale and boring (except for perhaps Jim Nantz and Al Michaels.)

Cowboys and Redskins had great epic games in the 70’s and 80’s,, RFK stadium had a unbelievable atmosphere for Football games especially with great Redskins fans and great Redskins teams,,,Greatest Rivalry of football is the Cowboys and Redskins,,,
Use to be. That went out when they lost their name.

Cool story!
This random game showed up in my feed. Not a fan of either team, but living in the DC area I know all the players from my childhood. Started watching just to see these all-time greats play not knowing who won. I couldn't stop. What a great game.
Riggins was like tackling a Rhino.

@@skymike12 I’m talking about the quality of the video not the play on the field.
Great video. They’re still the Washington Redskins.
I rooted for Dallas back then, they were good team every year of the 1970"s

ABC Sports had a busy day on this Monday. That afternoon ABC broadcast the famous Yankees/Red Sox one game playoff from Boston. In addition Howard Cosell had a busy week. After this game he flew to Kansas City for the ALCS Game 1.
That storied rivalry, Cowboys Vs. Commandos just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Don Meredith: "these two guys (Landry & Pardee as players) didn't know how so much so they kept asking why and I guess they make good coaches when they keep asking why"
These announcers are great. Meredith is underrated as an analyst.
But Frank did screw up and call it

Wow. I can't believe it. 💪

What a great defensive and hard hitting game by both teams. Thank you for sharing this game.
I remember My dad took me to this game in 1978 this was my first Cowboys game.
Go Cowboys!
I was a kid and was a little abnoyed at Thiesman at the end. Instead of tucking the ball in and running out the endzone, he held it up where it could have easilly been knocked out of his hand .
The Cowboys took it as showboating, and you could tell they did not appreciate it.
Whoa! A long-hidden gem. Thank you!
I was supposed to go to bed but I stayed up to watch this.
Washington started 6-0 and finished 2-8.
I was 4, I am 49 now… how I wish I could fast forward to 49 back in 1978.
Attended high school in Fairfax Co., VA, just outside of D.C. from 82-86. There was nothing like Cowboys vs. Redskins at R.F.K. Stadium.
Look how dark the lights are compared to modern stadiums.
My Dad let me stay up and watch the whole thing, a rarity, and when Theismann ran into the end zone to take the safety, it was just ... bliss. Thank you.
I watched it twice in a row.
This Redskin team was not deep and many of the starters, though excellent, were near the end of their careers. I attribute the late season collapse mostly to age. They just couldn't keep it up the intensity for 16 games.
These glory days of the NFL are long gone
Probably the worst game I ever saw Roger play, he usually makes that completion at the end. Great game though, intense heated rivalry, the crowd was into it and the announcer were on point. This was the heyday of the NFL when MNF was an event and these two teams really hated each other.....made for an epic game.
