I had been a Doug Williams fan since his days with the Bucs. He lead that team to winning seasons, playoffs and ultimately the NFC Championship game. Needless to say, when I knew Williams would be the starting QB against the Broncos in the SB, I was rooting hard for Williams and the Skins. I was ecstatic with this win.
@@guileweaver1574 he’s in that same boat with a guy like Jim Plunkett. The problem is that their overall numbers are not strong enough for that era. Still, they both had some incredible moments that’ll live forever in NFL lore.
@@timlee8823 statistically, his numbers in Tampa were not great, but that was in Tampa. Almost no one, offensively, had good numbers with that franchise in those days. However, his numbers in Washington were better. ‘87 turned out to be his one, truly good season, but I don’t think you can call a guy who did what he did a bum. If he were really a bum, he wouldn’t have done anything at all.
I'm proud of Doug Williams and John Elway for showing all of us how to remain humble and grateful after winning the Super Bowl and how to conduct yourself and remain a true professional after a losing...so much respect
@@donaldhall4823 Elway never got blown out...the BRONCOS did...Had the team had Elway-equivalent talent across their roster, they'd have never lost a game. That's what used to amuse me about his critics...they'd blame him for the losses, when he was the ONLY reason the Broncos were anywhere near any Super Bowls...Without him, I'm not sure they even make the playoffs...
This game truly brings back tearful, joyful memories. God Bless the entire Washington Redskins organization. Two BIG thumbs up to Eddie Robinson, for molding this amazing quarterback.
lets not get carried away. What did he do AFTERWARDS// VERY LITTLE. HE WAS DEFINITLY A GOOD COLLEGE qb but he never had to play against thethe Cornhusckers and THe Crmson Tide and Texas and Southern cow.
This happened before I was even born, so in many ways it's a whole new thing for me. I love being able to watch these old games in their entirety instead of just little play-by-play clips. Thank you for sharing!
Doug Williams played tough throughout his career. Big Ben Roethlisberger plays a lot like Doug IMO. Doug was a tough scrambler and could make throws deep down field while under pressure. Bucs let Williams go after the 1982 playoffs then went 2-14 the next season. Playoffs eluded the Bucs for the next 14 years.
I'm not a Redskins fan at all, but I'm happy for Doug Williams in this spot; he overcame a lot of nonsense (racism, bad contracts, family tragedy) to reach this point, and excelled once he got there.
@@brandonmorris9889 He couldn't win for Tampa Bay. The only playoff appearances they had in their first 21 years of existence were with him as the starting QB. You fucksticks are pathetic.
Doug Williams took a hapless Tampa Bay Bucs franchise to two NFC championship games and the Redskins too in 1987. Then he wins a superbowl with the Redskins, with the most prolific single scoring quarter of football in history of any game, not just playoffs. 35 points in one quarter!? and he missed zero passes. and then wins mvp. doug williams hall of fame as a Redskin!!
i;ve watched this game at least 20 times,,,,,i was a fan of Doug when he was in Tampa.....he lost his wife, but managed to show a tremendous talent in this game in spite of his adversities
Still emotional game as Doug Williams prove that QB can be someone different. He still is remembered as breaking the myth of African American quarter backs not being able to win a championship. Always grateful Mr. Williams.
Cook was a racist, but so is Snyder by keeping the name R**dSkins as thier name, despite many Indian Americans want it changed because its deeply offensive to thier history of being slaughtered by white folks.
The Redskins offensive line was just that good. If you really watch this game and break it down play-by-play you will notice that they give Doug Williams endless amounts of time to throw the ball and Timmy Smith gaping holes to run through from the second quarter onward.
I watched this game in DC in a sports bar where the bartender promised us free shooters every time the Redskins scored. I understand the fourth quarter was kind of slow; I don't recall it clearly. Nice to see what I missed!
i was in the air force stationed in dc..we partied all day passed out and woke up in the 2nd quarter to see this...the fireworks were fun to watch over the capital once it was over =)
I never get tired of looking at this. I cheered for Doug when he was in Tampa. The nicest guy you could ever meet. So proud of Doug Williams. He is an inspiration and changing the QB position and the view of the black QB. Look at the NFL today. Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes are now Super Bowl Champion Quarterbacks. But before that Steve McNair and Donovan McNabb led teams to Super Bowls even though they didn't win. Thank you Doug. You are one of my favorite QB's of all times.
Again I never get tire of watching this. His performance was legendary and has left a legacy he has to be very proud of. A great QB, a great person, and one great role model. Patrick Mahomes must have channeled his inner Doug Williams playing hurt and leaving it all on the field. I am a Georgia fan and even though Hurts was Alabama I always cheer for SEC player. But I and a Mahomes fan. Hopefully Jalen gets back and I can cheer him on. Unless, Stetson Bennett goes to the AFC and starts and leads a team there like cool Joe led the Bengals. My teams growing up were the Steelers and Falcons late 70's and 80's. Hope Stetson goes to either.
I really remember the game very well and the Washington Redskins won over the Denver Broncos and Doug Williams was the MVP The final is 42-10 . And that was the best game ever .😀🏈
Can't believe it's been 32 years to the day. Feels like yesterday. I was an eight year old black kid in Fresno California just MESMERIZED that a black man was the QB for a Super Bowl team. And then, he struggles, gets hurt, and it looks like he going to get blown out. Suddenly, the greatest single quarter of football in NFL history happens and he throws FOUR TOUCHDOWNS IN A QUARTER. Doug Williams made Steve McNair and Russell Wilson and Cam Newton truly possible. Respect Doug.
I was 17 years old used to go to Carlisle Pennsylvania what's 20 minutes from my house to watch them during their summer camp and couldn't believe it and he was from a HBCU
Even though it was other black quarterbacks before him Warren Moon blazing quarterback Cunningham and a forgotten quarterback Jimmy Jones who you might want to look up and Gilliam
I remember when Doug Williams first came into the NFL he threw high velocity darts most of the time that were frequently too hot to handle. He really refined his game and was spot on in this game. Really developed a nice touch.
I was nine years old when this game was played. Our family went to a neighbor's house and they had a bell that was rung every time the Redskins scored a TD and by halftime, we had broken that bell. Hail to the Redskins! What a great game and a wonderful memory.
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 how is saying the O line played well (fact) somehow devaluing what Doug did (play well, fact)....both happened. You're just reaching for something that isn't there.
I've watched highlights multiple times, and watch the 18 Plays documentary twice, but this is the first time I've watched the whole game since the day it aired. Most fun game ever! HTTR!!!
It helps when the Broncos put in guys like Tony Lilley to play safety. He couldn't keep up with any Redskins receivers or RBs. He was teh single reason for 35 2nd quater points.
I watched that game with a bunch of Cowboys fans pulling for Denver, and they had a great time in the first quarter. I remember telling them that there was a long way to go 😄
30 years ago today! My friend (deceased now) and family watched this game and "CHEERED" the Redskins on! I can remember that day like it was yesterday.
As good as the Williams was his offensive line was the true MVP in this game. I’m not trying to take anything away from the guy but look how much time he has to throw the ball every single time he drops back. Perfect pocket, and perfect throwing lanes from the second quarter onward.
@@Ezees23 Got benched in favor of Williams. Got traded to the Raiders. Took them as far as the AFC championship in ‘90 but never became as great as some thought he would. Like Doug Williams, accuracy problems plagued him.
Doug Williams performance in this Superbowl was the greatest I have seen in any Superbowl, or football game, and it would have been even better if Coach Gibbs didn't shut him down in the second half. A football kid from the beautiful, tranquil Islands of The Bahamas 🌴🏖️🌅🇧🇸
It helps when the Broncos put in guys like Tony Lilley to play safety. He couldn't keep up with any Redskins receivers or RBs. Safeties are supposed to keep guys from going all teh way. He allowed 4 of those 2nd quarter TDs.
@@shumandaniele It was heroic as far as what it meant to black people who'd up to that point been told that they didn't have the mental capacity or "necessities" to play quarterback. Not to be confused with the type of heroism it takes to fight in a war or save a person who's drowning, etc. but it was heroic in how inspirational it was to black people (and others) and it eventually revolutionized the game. Just like Andy Ruiz becoming the first Mexican American heavyweight champ was heroic to his community. It was a great moment in history and yes very heroic when measured in the proper context.
Was a young Broncos fan when this game happened. 6th grade I think. My parents let my girlfriend come over. When the Redskins started killing them in the 2nd quarter, we went outside. Had my first kiss. Broncos may have lost, but I had a good day. 😊
Doug Williams took the MVP award with four touchdown passes in this game too, but also the only black quarterback to win the MVP award in super bowl history too
I will never get tired of watching that game. Sat with my family and my beloved late mother who decorated the house with Redskins napkins, plates, streamers and turned it into a family holiday. She predicted Williams would win the MVP just before kickoff. That entire team was incredible. Bowles, Wilburn, Manley, Mann. Joe Jacoby should have been in the Hall a long time ago. Watch his block on Timmy Smith's second touchdown. He crosses the line and flattens the one defender who could have gotten to Smith. #HTTR
As a Giants fan, I HATE The Cowboys, and Eagles, but I do not have that hate for The Redskins. I respect their organization, and players. And I especially respected Coach Gibbs. I actually enjoyed this Super Bowl a lot. I was happy for guys like Gary Clark, Darrell Green, and Doug Williams.
Another Giant Fan here. Basically agree. Hate the Cowboys. Eagles when Buddy Ryan (he was kind of a slug) was there not has much now. Don't hate the skins. Going into this game the media kept on talking about the 3 amigos on Denver. But I thought that Monk, Clark and Sanders were better. Looks like I was right.
@@adk46er5203 Yes. All the talk was about the 3 amigos all week long and how Denver was going to win. That 2nd quarter was like a knife in their heart. I loved it. Never did like that horse face Elway.
Whites made it racial. They were PISSED off, just because a black QB excelled. They didn't even talk about the game, the next day at work. The FOLLOWING post Super Bowl day, the next year, it was, "did you watch the Super Bowl", as usual.
Marshall made it racial when he refused to integrate until the federal government forced him to. Fitting that Doug Williams would be the first Black QB to win a Superbowl and leave Marshall spinning like a top. HTTR!!!
This is actually the first ever Super Bowl match up that I've seen on television and the 1987 NFL season in general almost 35 years ago when I was a young kid. After that, there was absolutely no turning back whatsoever. I became hooked on the sport of football ever since. I just hope this seasons Super Bowl is going to be a lot more entertaining then the last one was with the Buccaneers blowout over the Chiefs.
Same here, didn't even watch this Super Bowl until just now. I had no clue what a strong start Denver had in this game, kinda love that the rug got pulled out from under them. Even though I attended The Drive game, The Fumble I'd say was the more brutal loss. Recall standing for all of the second half in the living room because convinced that if I sat the Browns would lose momentum. Such idiocy.
I will never forget losing my voice @ halftime. This was the greatest offensive quarter in NFL post season history...Don't forget it was only 16 plays.
Legend has it that George Rogers the starting Running back told Coach Gibbs 10 days before the Super Bowl that he was too hurt to play. Gibbs kept it a secret from Timmy Smith because he didn't want the Rookie to get scared knowing he would have to carry the load on the ground. Timmy Smith found out that he was starting only minutes before kickoff.
I asked my late, great mother before the game who would win and would be the MVP. She didn't hesitate. Doug Williams. Two questions: Why isn't Joe Jacoby in the Hall of Fame? Why isn't Gary Clark in the Hall of Fame. Both had better careers than a lot of HOF players. HTTR!
Well with Clark the argument was always the Posse. He had Monk and Sanders so that both made it easier for him to get open and hurt his overall numbers. Jacoby I have no idea he should have been in years ago.
I feel as if u are a starter n help ur team get to the bowl and win stats should not matter. He should mosdef n a host of others be n the hof. Why T.O. gets my respect for his action
Timmy Smith played well that game, but that offensive line was something else. Whenever people say the Cowboys offensive line is good, I harken back to this team and the 1991 Redskins team.
The hogs are the best O-Line of ALL TIME.. For a full decade from about 82 to 92 they were nothing short of dominant.. Name another core group of guys that led 3 different qbs (2 of which were medicore in my opinion), into 4 superbowls, WON 4 of them, dominated in each superbowl win, and did all within a 10 year span.. Honestly it's a TRAVESTY of justice why ALL of the individuals from those great teams aren't ALREADY in the pro football HOF.. Inducted as simply.. #TheHOGS #HTTR
Seriously. If you watch Timmy Smith's second score, you see Joe Jacoby pull to his right and annihilate the only defender who could have gotten a hand on Smith. Just knocked him off his arse. Jacoby should have been in the Hall a long, long, time ago.
It is mind-boggling that an "N.F.L." team could rack up 602 total yards in a "SuperBowl" game which is a record to date. Every offensive lineman for Washington should have been elected to the pro "Football Hall of Fame" after this overwhelming performance. George Rogers was intended to start this "SuperBowl" at running back. If Timmy Smith set a (still standing) "Super Bowl" record with 204 yards rushing, it's frightening to think what a healthy George Rogers could have amassed. Possibly almost 400 yards rushing and set a record that no one would have approached. John Elway probably still has nightmares recollecting about this brutally, historic "Super Bowl" rout.
I had the joy of watching this in a bar (not in Denver) with a bunch of Bronco fans. My friend and I went nuts cheering that fight song. Catchy tune that.
By halftime the Broncos had to know the game was already over, yet had to come out and play another half of football anyway. That must have been extremely demoralizing.
I love when former commissioner Pete Rozelle said today's America's team the Washington Redskins giving the Super Bowl trophy to the late Jack can cook How Sweet That is ?
Brian Davis! My old Cortez High buddy. I was a 10th grader and he was a freshman. His entire high school football career consisted of 7 downs. Then, while playing in a Sunday morning flag football league it became apparent that nobody could catch him. He was encouraged to walk on at Glendale C.C. which he did.He made 1st string defense. Then a scout from the Nebraska Cornhuskers saw him while scouting a kid from the opposing team. Got offered a scholarship and became one of the famous Nebraska black shirts. He was then drafted by the Redskins. I remember watching this game and thinking that he looked like a kid from Cortez High School with the same name that he resembled. Then I found out 25 years later that it was HIM! I ended up moving back to Detroit after my 10th grade year, but I definitely remember him. My greatest mistake was not going back to Phoenix in that summer of '78. I loved Cortez. I played JV basketball there. Brian's story is amazing and way better than Rudy's! Way to go Brian ! So proud of you!!
Talk about the dangers of stereotypes. Washington completed a successful Super Bowl run with a Black quarterback and a White cornerback. Remember the first-round matchup vs the Bears. After Darrell Green strained his rib cartilage on the game-winning punt return TD, Davis finished the game at corner and shut down Willie Gualt.
Mr. Doug Williams just broke down so many doors for the Wilsons, Jacksons, Prescotts, and McHomes's of today - What a legend he was even before joining Washington having dealt with racism, and lousy Tampa Bay teams for most of his career. God truly had his hands on him in this Super Bowl.
Exactly! 👍 He did, after all, lead the Buccaneers to both a division championship and an NFC Championship game appearance. Unfortunately, rather than build off on that season for the next, the Bucs started slowing down and Doug ended up going to Washington. Then, he leaves San Diego with the Lombardi in his hand.
2:27:14 - Timmy Smith's 204 rushing yards is still a Super Bowl record, one of the few Super Bowl records set in this game by Washington that still stands today.
@@Hexon66 I didn't mean to downplay Williams' play nor Sanders' receiving yards. However, I think that Montana and Rice broke those numbers the very next year. Denver didn't have the best defense that year, but the 2nd quarter collapse was unreal.
They were the Redskins. They are the Commanders. With any luck, they will have a better name in the future. But stop holding on to the past. The history is written.
Doug Williams was old and past his prime injured then. To bad they had let him get out of NFL when in prime. Just a problem for NFL. The black quarterback was still a mystery to them.
Gary Clark of the Washington Redskins conducted at least 3 football camps at Native American reservations during his career. He wanted to know if they thought the Redskins name was racist. What he saw was Native Americans wearing Redskins gear and saying that they were proud to be a Redskin fan and the 5% that weren’t Redskins fans were Cowboys fans and that’s why they didn’t like the name.
I met Doug Williams and Willie Brown at a football camp back in 2008. We all had lunch together, they had their Super Bowl rings on which was cool to get to see. Good times.
I remember watching this game where everyone thought Elway was going to win the game. I had never been so proud at the way Doug Williams played the game at a time when it was thought that there could never be a successful Black QB!!! The Skins pulled together and gave the fans the best feeling. It was fantastic!!!
One of the best Super Bowls ever. Doug Williams broke the myth that a Black Quarterback could not lead a Pro Football team to the Super Bowl and win. Doug Williams and the Redskins slaughtered John Elway and the Broncos. What a great Win for Doug Williams and the Redskins.
I agree. When Doug was in Tampa he was the only quality player they had. In fact he carried the team on his shoulders. Blockers couldn't block, receivers couldn.t catch and runners ran with no vision like they were blind. Doug Williams was very hard to sack and could make every throw from any position on the field with astonishing accuracy. I feel he was the third best QB to ever play the game behind Patrick Mahomes and Big Ben Roethlesberger who is bound for Canton Ohio. As a matter of fact when I watched Big Ben over the years I thought of Doug Williams.
Joe Gibbs agreed to trade Doug Williams to the Raiders that year, but then changed his mind. One of the best moves he never made. Watching Doug Williams play so great that second quarter and help win that Superbowl was amazing. He changed people's mindset that game. Black, White, Brown, Yellow. Nobody ever played like that in a Superbowl. Thank you Doug for showing people that great performances come in ALL COLORS. 🙏
There were lots of black QBs at that time good enough to start and play. The only reason they didn't is because the old boys network kept them out (just as in baseball decades earlier). As the saying goes, the only reason some of those guys aren't in the hall of fame is that they were prevented from even playing a single game.
ShmuelWeintraub There were lots of Black college QB's who were converted to other positions once they got to the pro's. There were lots of Black QB's who started and played before Doug Williams. But Doug played out of his mind in the second quarter of that Superbowl. He played better than any QB ever had before. Everyone saw that performance. The knock on black QB's in the 80's was, they were not smart enough to win a Superbowl. Nobody could ever say a Black QB was not smart enough to win a Superbowl ever again. He set the standard for ever Black QB to come after him. 👍😆😆
ShmuelWeintraub Marlin Briscoe started for Denver in 1968. After 2 seasons of setting records he was cut. James Harris started for Buffalo in 1969. He went to the Rams and then was traded to the Chargers. JJ Jones started in 1975. Joe Gilliam started for the Steelers until Bradshaw was ready to take over. Dave Mays. Vince Evans. Parnell Dickinson. All started at QB in the NFL. So a lot did start and play in the NFL. Yes it is a good ol boys network. Just like in baseball. But when you get the chance to shine. You have to Explode and Burn Bright. 👍💎💎💎💎💣💣💣💣
With all due respect, the "smart enough: thing was more to a time when QBs called their own plays. One of the things I HATE about today's NFL, is that they don't do this, now.
liecrusher It is just a different time. Not even Tom Brady calls his own plays all the time. Peyton Manning did. Possibly Dru Breeze does now. Things are just more complicated.
For me, this trio of commentators were the three best ever! Two seasoned and eloquent former football players plus a colorful play by play commentator. I wish Dan Dierdorf had worked with Frank Gifford for many years at ABC.
Watched this live as a 17 yo Washington fan. Our last SB a few years before, our boys got crushed 38-9. When DEN went up 10-0, I thought we might be in for another whoopin. Then that 2nd Quarter! One of the craziest, single-quarter offensive bursts of all time! We were jumping, hollering and whooping it up. What a time to be alive! And I had been a Schroeder man. I thought making Williams the starter was a mistake. Good thing Coach Gibbs didnt care what I thought! Viva Doug!
I get it. Schroeder was great against the blitz, working that 3 step drop. But I don't think he had the arm Williams did. From a Bears fan, who watched Schroeder beat the Bears pass rush a time or two.
I can't see how you can say that you're a Washington fan and think that it was a mistake for Coach Gibbs to start Doug Williams over Jay Schroeder in the SB? Obviously Coach Gibbs knew something you didn't because he was a professional football coach and you were not. His very wise coaching decision to start Doug Williams was the best one and it worked out well for Doug and for the team as Washington was victorious in the Super Bowl winning 42-10 and Doug Williams had one of the greatest performances of any starting QB in Super Bowl history winning the MVP award. Also the devastating 38-9 loss Washington suffered in Super Bowl 18 was at the hands of the then Los Angeles Raiders in January 1984.
This game gave us some of my favorite Horse Face grimaces of all time. It got funnier and funnier too because the announcers had spent the first quarter praising him to the skies. Probably my favorite Skins game ever.
I'm sorry about the team name and logo. Snyder made efforts reaching out to the Native American community. I would hope they continue regardless. I had hoped for the potato solution, to save the name. I felt the team really had an opportunity to raise awareness- and support for helping- Native Americans.
@@robfloyd7389 It's all just deranged nonsense. Might as well call the Crazy Horse monument racist at this rate. Which the SJW-crazies probably will at some point. Facts oe history don't interest them, only their ignorant, personal fifis.
Dan Dierdorf - I never liked him because he wore his dislike of the Redskins on his sleeve. Always putting them down. At one point in the game he starts making excuses for the Broncos. Elway was a great quarterback, no doubt, but they failed to point out that there were two great quarterbacks on the field and only one of them proved that day.
@@politicallycorrectredskin796 "Crazy Horse" was an actual Native American who actually existed - not a racial slur. A monument to him, to the extent it accurately represents him, is not racist. Naming a football team the "Redskins" is completely different, because that is a racial slur. To nearly all Native Americans, it's equivalent to "Darkies" or the N-word.
@@humanbeing2420 Wrong. There was a very large number of Native Americans who loved the name and were furious when the team said they would change it. You're completely ignoring those Native Americans while only focusing on the ones who followed the politically correct script, in an attempt to skew reality to support your opinion. I saw right through your smoke screen, but nice try anyway.
The Redskins offensive line is the one who laid the smack down. Doug Williams had weeks to sit back and look over the field from the beginning of the game. Seriously if you don’t believe me watch the game again and count how many seconds Doug Williams has to sit back there almost every time he drops back.
So proud that day seeing one of my hue excel. God had made no mistakes in making us. He God was right. The world was wrong. Thank you Mr. Doug Williams for using your gifts to grace the world for God showing his love for all ,especially me this black girl and all who needed to know God cared.
Talk about one game wonders, Timmy Smith's only start that year, which was his rookie year, was this Super Bowl game in which he set a Super Bowl single game rushing record with 206 yards rushing, which he continues to hold to this day. He has not started an NFL game since.
The Redskins put on an offensive clinic. The o-line was outstanding but the wide receivers were throwing killer blocks downfield compounding the huge gains from the passing game.
The trade off between these three commentators was excellent. Dan Dierdorf knew the game intimately as an NFL offensive lineman for 13 years. He was a superb player and his commentary was top notch.
The great Jack Kent Cooke owned the team and as a Washingtonian I watched one of the greatest quarterback performances in Super Bowl history and he was a black man! I will never forget that day.
Don't you miss him. I watch a interview where he said, I don't know anything about football, that is why I hire people. He was more a fan than a owner and he stayed out of that part. I wish he would have left the team to his kids, we would have been much better off today.
Can you name one playoff-caliber team in NFL history that got -- in just one quarter of play -- an ass-beating as *brutal* as the Broncos got in the 2nd quarter of this game? I can't.
SingleTax the Lions 2nd quarter in the 1995 Wild Card vs the Eagles was pretty close. 4 less points, plus it wasnt the SB, but it was arguably much more embarrassing, they looked like a high school team against a pretty average Philly squad
Depends whether you consider the 1985 Patriots a legitimate playoff team (weak AFC that era...). The Bears beat the hell out of them, but I wouldn't say there was exactly one quarter of that game that was as bad as the second in this one. Overall, it was a horrendous defeat... but arguably Washington's beating on denver in this one quarter was worse.
The Broncos performance in the 89 Super Bowl against the 49ers was also pretty bad. But, I can’t think of a worse single quarter of football in SB history.
When Doug Williams came into the league he took the Bucs from a 2 game win season to the NFC championship. He had the likes of Jimmy Jiles and James Wilder he was passing to and winning games. Not sure what Doug Williams you are talking about.
When Doug came out of the SWAC is what they called the conference.is a mostly all black small conference, although there were many that came out of there Dickens Jones,Walter Payton,Jerry Rice.and a few more.it was stated that Doug used to throw that ball so hard that if you do catch it you had blisters on your hand.coaching staff at Tampa ask him to ease of the hard ball.those guys used to drop a many passes from Doug, but by time he got to red skin he had toned it down to perfection.still the most watch come back Superbowl game in modern history.

@@mysonandme8424 People do have their biases and especially Dan Dierdorf had an open dislike of the Redskins. The media in general and the announcers treated Elway like he was a God and barely mentioned the abilities of Williams. No doubt, Elway was a great quarterback but there were two great quarterbacks on the field that day. Only one of them proved it that day. The whole silly thing about blacks not being able to play quarterback was nonsense that needed to be dismissed once and for all. It is not about color, it is about merit. If most of the best football players are black, so be it. They earned it. If most are white, so what, they earned it. Most pro golfers are white, SO WHAT, they earned it.
Doug Williams was the incredible! He didn't get much respect and most people were talking like it was going to be the John Elway show, and Elway did come out smoking, but Doug Williams played magnificently! I was so proud of him!! I bought a T shirt with his picture as Super Bowl Champion that said "A touch of Class!"
My enduring memory of this game is a limping Doug Williams throwing those touchdown bombs. That and the commentators slow realization that Elway wasn't going to be elevated to Superman, LOL!
If we're being honest, Williams' was an above average QB throughout his career, and was statistically only equal to Jay Schroeder in this season. Not to mention his no-call fumble in the Super Bowl on the play he was injured. But I give him all the credit in the world for throwing 4 perfect passes to 4 wide open receivers in the 2nd quarter. But don't forget, unknown Timmy Smith also ran for 200+ yards against that defense. So, context is important.
Doug Williams was a fine QB. Maybe not an all-time great, but he played like one that day and got a well deserved MVP. Timmy Smith was a one-shot wonder who did nothing after this game. As a Broncos' fan, this game was especially frustrating because we started so well. Great first quarter, epically terrible second. After that, the second half was anticlimactic.
It's the same problem we had with Gruden and Cousins in DC: great in the first two quarters when they were running their script, helpless when the script ran out after the break. Joe Gibbs did not believe in that approach, which is why his teams had these comebacks in the second and third quarters of so many big games. They took the best shot of the opponents and then took over once it was done. Unlike the Broncos and early 90s Bills he also kept it simple. He essentially ran tiny variations of the same play for a decade. Of course, the advantage of that was that his teams got really good at running that one play. No hesitation or confusion in big games either.
FYI when you win a game that inspire and uplifts an entire race of people, your a all time great. Maybe not in your book or your hall of fame criteria book. But all throughout the Redskins and the HBCU community Doug is classified as a all time Great. How many color barriers did Joe Montana and Tom Brady had to overcome to be an all time great?
The most amazing thing about Williams was not winning the superbowl. The most amazing thing Williams ever did in football was getting the Bucs to one game away from the superbowl in their 4th year of its existence in 1979.
That was my favorite quote from the game. It made me picture the ref go over and look Dan Reeves in the eyes and then start waving his arms and shaking his head, stopping the game.
I remember watching this game and nearly in tears because I just KNEW my Broncos were going to win (I was 10 at the time). Quite the Tale of Two Quarters. The Broncos were in complete control: up 10-0, better than 2-1 advantage in yards, and the opposition's starting quarterback is injured. Needless to say, when I knew Williams would be the starting QB against the Broncos in the SB, I was rooting hard for Williams and the Skins. I was ecstatic with this win.

@@robfloyd7389 Like Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders.
Things are just more complicated.
i like the joe gibbs offense
NFL, you should leave the commercials in the video. I LOVE the old commercials
Should be titled:"Super Bowl XXII, Full Game: Doug Williams and Timmy Smith lay the smackdown on an increasingly hapless John Elway."
This is only a couple years after John Elway got drafted and publicly dis the Colts
@@bobbybrown8629 It was almost 5 years later, he was drafted in 1983, this super bowl was on 1/31/88
Smackdown all across the board. The Skins offensive and defensive lines making the Broncos look like a College squad. Gibbs out coaching Reeves
I was in Germany when they played this game. This is the first time I've seen it . Thanks You Tube!
I was too. Got drunk and missed most of the game. Good to watch it again decades later.
Future Super bowl champion mark Rypien on sidelines for Washington Redskins.
Talk about one game wonders, Timmy Smith's only start that year, which was his rookie year, was this Super Bowl game in which he set a Super Bowl single game rushing record with 206 yards rushing, which he continues to hold to this day. He has not started an NFL game since.
204 yards and he did start a few games in 1988.
Mine
The Broncos performance in the 89 Super Bowl against the 49ers was also pretty bad. But, I can’t think of a worse single quarter of football in SB history.
The Broncos in SB 48, The Falcons in SB 33
I remember when Doug Williams first came into the NFL he had zero touch on his passes. Here he's laying them out perfectly. Came a long way.
He had months to throw the ball. His O-line deserved the MVP trophy.
@@MaximusWolfe O-line didn't make those throws. But there's ALWAYS people like you trying to diminish what someone who looks like me does. FOH never was.
this was a beautiful game and i loved it when doug willams put the dagger in all the sport announcers heart they did,nt even mention his talent but they gave all praises to john elway thank you doug for playing your game and taking that trophy if giving the chance more black quarterbacks will excel at that position point blank
so you're one of those ppl who won't be happy til every position of every sport is black only; in your mind, it just isn't possible for a white man to be better at anything than a black man. if a white man says there needs to be more white wrs, he's called racist but black pundits are always talking about more black qbs and coaches, even though the league is already over 70% black or mixed, it just never is enough. smdh.
This was the greatest super Bowl for me,to observe a Great quarterback, Doug Williams in full command of his team ,and the game.😎😎😎
Doug Williams is immortal because of this.
Just looking at the comments as a Black Man I still have Love for America and our future for everyone
😁🍺🤙❤️🙏🇺🇲🏈❤️👍
Great job Doug the first Black African quarterback to win a Superbowl
Doug WIlliams performance in this Super Bowl made football my favorite team sport.
"If this was a fight they might stop it"
I liked that by the both !
Who would predict the outcome ?
Got worse for them two years later.
They went into halftime down 35-10, giving up a game's worth of production in 17 plays. Nearly 30 years later, I'm still in awe of that 2nd Quarter.
I remember this day like it was yesterday. My dear daddy was alive and he was working for the state department and was so excited for the Redskins to beat Denver due to family members there that were cheering against us. I was 7 years old and it was one of the happiest days of my life. Growing up in the DC metro area I don't think there will ever be fans as committed to their team as they were to the Washington Redskins. I will never call them the Commanders it doesn't fit well with me and I still have all my fan paraphernalia from the old days. I wish I could relive this exact day and never grow up. Hail to the Redskins. 🏈
I lived in MD and my friends and I watched it on a 13" color TV, I think I was 12. We thought the game was OVER when Doug hurt his knee, but he came back and our screams could probably be heard throughout the neighborhood. These guys were kings of the Beltway. Hail Victory!
