  • Today I am Fly Fishing for the first time on Realistic Fishing! I am challenging myself to a Fly Fishing Challenge. Can I catch a fish on my first try? This fly fishing combo was sent to the show by a generous subscriber. Since this is my first time fly fishing, I thought it would be a good time to try since I had the dock to myself. Despite being a total novice, I am able to get a feel for it and make a few decent casts and catch fish! Now I need to get a feel for the retrieve so the process becomes easier. Although awkward, I had a great time trying fly fishing for the first time. #fishing #realistic

A buddy of mine tried to teach me how to fly fish a few years ago. We were out behind his garage and he ties small washer on the end of the line. He demonstrated how to whip the rod back and forth to build momentum before he flung it outward. He told me that anyone could do it with practice. Then he let me try it. Long story short, a few minutes later, his garage window was busted, he had a big red splotch on his forehead, and he was taking the rod from me and saying "You can't do this."

I had a friend try o reach me once and it didn’t go any better for me. I didn’t break a window, but that’s only because he taught me to cast where there were no windows.

Great video! Hand lining is usually the best way to do it unless you get a fish large enough to get you back on the reel so you can use the drag. When hand lining lock the line under your first couple fingers on the grip. That way the fish isn't gaining slack each time you tack another grab of line. Enjoy! Fly fishing is a blast!
Had I watched the entire video first I would have seen that you already figured it out haha. My bad!

@@RealisticFishing Natural move from using the other tackle & you did it perfectly. There is tackle called "casting bobbers" somewhat aerodynamically shaped that gives you a weight to tie a fly or popper into a spinning rod. line bobber leader fly. Not finesse like the fly rod but, it will let you use dry flies & poppers. Next fly rod tech is a weighted line & streamers for subsurface imitation minnow fishing. That's using the "stripping" technique to move the streamer in front of the target & casting/timing to get it out in front of a bonefish/red/tarpon/permit to entice a strike. Flats fishing in shallow salt water. Cool to see you giving other gear a try KIR

The line should be coming and going from the bottom in order to take full advantage of the drag and here's the fix:
*Strip the line until you reach the knot on the spool.
    * Release the spool
    * Since you are a southpaw, invert the anti-reverse roller bearing inside the spool. You may need a small screwdriver for this. Every model is different.
*Snap in the spool back into the body and reel in the line like any other reel
The entire process should take about 45 minutes if not rushing it.
You can really take advantage of the drag system on these reels should you hook into a sizable bass. Can't wait to see how you progress with this technique. Keep at it man, you are a natural!

I'm glad you gave fly fishing a try. It's very fun! I practiced the fly casting at a local park without a fly attached, just to get the movements down. Doesn't take long to learn it!
I like how to naturally figured out the proper way to hold the line when catching a fish. Use both hands to handle the line. One pulls in while the other (holding the rod) keeps the tension on it for those that fight real hard. :)
Now, to see you catch a Bass on that bad boy!

What a great video. It had me thinking of when I learned to fly fish back in 97/98 when I was doing a lot of remote camping. That was when I thought catching trout was the "in thing". But, being in Oregon on a high mountain lake thats the primary fish, lol. I started because it allowed me to really shrink my fishing kit. I used flies that looked like black ants that were all over several trees around the lake. I had to whip the water with my fly line for days until I got the hang of it. Now that I am back in the Midwest, I do not do it as much, but I do break out my fly rod from time to time to keep in practice.

For bass fishing I use an 8wt rod with Orvis Hydros Bank Shot Float 8wt line which is an extreme weight forward shooting head type line for much less false casting and better distance with big bass bugs, especially when fly fishing from a kayak where it feels like you are casting uphill.

Also when storing the fly rod and reel, make sure you pull out all the line, and then make a wide loop of the line. You can leave the line attached to the reel. This prevents the leader, tippet, fly line and backing from memory, and won’t coil up on you like a birds nest/backlash when you use it later.

Been fly fishing for about 40 years mostly for warm water fish. It can get very addictive. There is a treasure trove of info out there. You have yourself a premium place to fly fish there. Don't be surprised the more you go back, the tougher they will eventually get to fool. Over time your casting and retrieving will naturally improve. You are on the right track.

The best bass bug in my area is a deer hair Dahlberg Diver. It floats (deer hair is hollow) and tugs make it dive subsurface, then it bobs up to the surface again. Fish can't resist it. One day using the Dalberg Diver from a kayak, I caught a 5 lbs Largemouth bass, a huge Warmouth bass, and a chain pickerel. Three species on one fly in one day.

lol Great results! Good on you for stepping out the comfort zone. Absolutely caught on quick, running that line under your index or middle finger on the rod grip is the way to go. Gotta offer my advice: you're dropping the rod a tip a little low on your forecast- try and stop the rod during the cast closer to 45 degrees and then lower the rod slowly as the cast is on it's way. And try to work the fly only with the line, stripping in line bit by bit to impart action rather than by moving the rod tip. Same goes with hooksets- set the hook by pulling the line, rather than pulling the rod. The very bendy nature of fly rods gives the fish a lot more leeway on a hookset, whereas the line is the direct connection. Pulling the rod back 2ft is no where near the hookset power as pulling the line itself back 2ft. If that makes sense. Love the channel!

I tried fly fishing when I was younger. I thought that looked like fun from watching A River Runs Through It. You had better luck in one day than I did from trying multiple times. I think I only ever caught two or three small bluegills. I even went so far as to even try trying my own flies. At the time I thought these look good, but as with a lot of things, I look back at what I made and say they were horrible. Keep it realistic!

Seriously, nothing more fun than catching bluegills on surface poppers!
Looking Good! Try to throw the line loop with the rod tip. You're dropping the rod tip at the end of the cast. You'll get more distance and accuracy if you punch it out there! Also, switch youre reel around so the line winds on to the bottom of the reel. Keep at it! Love to see you catching fish!

Everyone starts out at the same place. You can either stay where you are by doing nothing or you can advance with some practice. Nobody goes out and just "knows" how to fly fish. There is a lot of art and skill involved, but that's also why makes it so rewarding. You decided to step out of your comfort zone and the 1st time trying something new is always the hardest. This video alone showed proof of practice = improvement. Your first few casts you didn't really know what to do, but then later you're pinching the line and doing what feels "best" for you. Congrats, you are now a fly fisherman haha. This was a really good change of pace video AND panfish on flies can be insanely fun/super relaxing.
